Sony’s rolling out beta invites for PlayStation 4 firmware update v8.00, so take a quick look at your inbox to see if you got in. This is actually a surprisingly beefy update considering the current-gen system is entering its twilight years, with the emphasis clearly on quality-of-life improvements to the console’s communication features.
There are a bunch of changes to the way groups and parties work, down to minutiae such as small “screen design” tweaks. The biggest new feature is the ability to enable two-factor verification through authenticator apps, which should add an additional layer of security to your PlayStation Network account. We’ve included all the patch notes below.
PS4 Firmware Update 8.00 Patch Notes
As part of the System Software 8.00 Beta, the following changes have been made to Party and Messages:
- When starting a party, you can now choose to create a new group or select an existing group. When you create a new group, it'll be saved even after the party has ended. You can start a new party with the same members by selecting the group that you previously created.
- You can now use your groups across Party and Messages. You can send messages to a group you created for a party, or start a party with a group you've messaged with.
- Messages has been added to the screen during parties. When you select Messages, you'll see the messages exchanged between members of your group.
- The public/private settings for parties have been removed. Only members of the group can join the party.
- You can now change your party settings from the options menu that displays on the screen when you select (Party). You can also manage your party connection settings when you select [Party Voice Chat Connection], which has been added to the party settings.
- Members of your party can now see when your mic is muted.
- You can now join parties even if there are members that you've blocked. When you join a party with a blocked member, or when a blocked member joins the party, you'll receive a notification. During the party, you won't hear each other, and the game you're playing, as well as your Share Play status, won't be displayed. In addition, the blocked member won't be notified that you've blocked them.
- Play Together sessions can no longer be started during a party. For online multiplayer games, you can start a game session from within the game.
- Two-step verification is now available using authenticator apps. After entering your sign-in ID and password on your PS4, you can complete the sign-in process by allowing the app access. You can download authenticator apps from the App Store or Google Play™. We do not guarantee the functionality of all authenticator apps.
The following changes have been made to parental controls:
- [Communicating with Other Players] and [Viewing Content Created by Other Players] have been combined and are now [Communication and User-Generated Content]. If you've selected [Not Allowed] for either of the settings, the same setting will transfer after the update.
Other updated features:
- [Mute All Microphones] has been added to the quick menu under [Sound/Devices]. This setting mutes all microphones connected to your PS4.
- The following changes have been made to Communities. -You can no longer create parties from the Community screen. You'll need to create a group in Party.
- You can no longer create a new event in Events. Events created before the update will still be held, and events and tournaments hosted by game developers will continue to take place.
- For some features, the content displayed on the screen has changed, as well as the screen design.

Getting rid of the option to set your party to public/private and instead having to make different groups sounds like added busy work to me. I can see why it may be helpful to some but personally it’s never been a pressing issue simply setting it to private & selecting a few friends to invite.
I love my PS4 but twice now I have lost all my data on it :-/ Luckily I save my game saves to USB stick everytime I play a game but I just lost over 4 hours+ of playing RE2 because I didn't back up my save. I did all of the 'safe mode' stuff but it kept getting stuck at 30%'ish so I had to wipe everything for the second time now :-/ I hope the PS5 doesn't have this problem or maybe it's the hard drive problem I don't know but it's F-IN annoying and makes me not want to save anything on Console hard drives anymore :-/ Oh well.
Give me playtime stat and detachable updates/DLC backups.
Pretty please with a cherry on top!
@AJDarkstar boot into safe mode and rebuild database. It solves issues like freezes and sluggish menus. However your custom folders and games in them will be reset which means it you have hundreds of games installed and categorised like me it is going to be painful to do it all again
@Carl-G That's not normal man. Something's up. I have an OG, a Slim which is my daughter's and 2 Pros and before that I had a launch model and a launch pro (noisy 1st gen) model. Lots of PS4s and lots of gaming time and not once have I had that problem on any machine.
Something's flakey with your system. Don't know what, but that is far from normal, so yeah.. I'm pretty sure you're not going to see that with your next console.
@LemonHaze Their process is called "fix and replace". You send yours in needing a fix and they replace it with a like-new refurb. They do the same process with PSVRs.
@Carl-G replace your HDD. Are you running on the original that came with your console?
Is anyone willing to share an extra, valid beta code with me? I got sent a code for all the previous betas but not for this one it seems. I really wanted to try out the new party features too.
All the community and group and multiplayer stuff I'll never use due to being an apex single player. 👌🏻
I'm really going to miss the PS4 relaxing menu music and gentle waves though, as it's actually the last link back to the glory days of Sony Xperia phones - the Z2 and Z3. Pure luxury - before Sony largely lost their way
Useless updates for me. If they rathet let me organize main menu icons as I want, not by recently runned. And delete that stupid "what's new"...
Such a stupid anti consumer move getting rid of the option to create events. These help to add to the longevity and community of games (particularly the former with smaller games).
One more thing I would like to make them to do is to update the web explorer. It seriously sucks!
These betas seem to be all about messages and party chat a lot, yes we've been asking since PS3 for group chat but surly they've refind it by now. I won't be downloading this one as I dont use chat anyway, think they need to give the option to shrink the box sizes of items in the dashboard that would be cool.
Hide stuff to the library I don't want to use like playroom etc, right now I have to put them under a folder called Useless Stuff
@SpicyTacos101 I haven't loaded 8.0 yet, so unsure if this is the same. But currently you can click the "3 dots" on a person's profile & select "chat in party". One button pressed. You can do it right from the hotbar (hold PS button). Pre-8.00 doing that creates a party, makes it private, and invites the person you clicked on. I'd assume 8.00 would create a party, put the person in a group, and send them an invite
Not going to bother
@topes That’s good to hear, that would indeed an improvement if it can be done with a simple hold of the ps button
