We think we can all agree that Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered looks outstanding in the PlayStation 5 footage released earlier today, but without an immediate reference point, the visuals improvements may not be quite as obvious as they actually are. Enter YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits, who previously compared the PlayStation 3 version of Demon's Souls with the upcoming remake and now has done the very same thing with Insomniac Games' take on the web-slinger. Of course, the difference isn't quite as impressive as that particular comparison, but Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered still has a few tricks up its sleeve that put a PS4 game to shame.
What immediately jumps out to us is the lighting. The PS5 remaster appears so, so much brighter than its current-gen counterpart — that could be HDR really putting in the work. Elsewhere, the draw distance appears to have improved as buildings feature even more tiny details to make them feel life-like. We also can't forget about the bump up to 60 frames-per-second which will make combat and traversal feel even smoother.
Are you impressed by Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered? Gawk and admire the work put into this in the comments below.

I'm just really happy this game is finally running at 60fps
A game with such fluid exploration and combat mechanics demands that kind of performance
Honestly the HDR kinda works against the presentation somewhat given I already thought Spidey's Advanced suit had this really glaring orange tint in the PS4 game during day time segments in New York and now it looks even more accentuated here
I imagine you'll see an even bigger leap in the non-60 frames-per-second mode, but obviously doubling the framerate is a big deal.
Mmmmmm puddles.
The changes are miniscule. These remasters of PS4 games are laughable. Because any PS5 game that plays on PS4 looks like a PS4 game. Not say they look bad, but theirs a clear difference between them and games like Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank that are built just for PS5.
The mug clearly does cast a shadow on the PS5 version, it just seems to be shorter due to a higher lighting angle.
Apart from that, the biggest change appears to be in the reflections in skyscraper windows.
I won't be buying it again, though; might not even bother with Miles Morales.
@nessisonett gonna have to change your avatar to Tom Holland- lite now lol
@SpicyTacos101 Lite? Nah he's like K-Mart or Value Village Tom Holland at best
I mean it isn't that massive. Nothing really stands out besides the reflections and some of the textures like the rug in that room.
I'd say basically everyone who played this on PS4 is safe to skip the remaster, unless you're super into vaguely better looking versions of 2 year old games. The better framerate is a plus, though, but not 70 USD worthy whatsoever.
@Ken_Kaniff Yeah all these microscopic upgrades could be done on PS4 Pro if they really wanted to, there's nothing here that screams next gen unless you consider pre puberty Tom Holland next gen.
I just watched this on a phone, can't use a TV at the moment but I can say updates are minimum. Better textures, better resolution sure ... But you could put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. Can't change 1 character's face and call it a remaster. This games should have a 5$ AT BEST upgrade path for all PS4 owners. Sony is really greedy on this one. I hope they will learn their lesson after this one and don't do this again with other games like GoT LoU2 and Uncharted.
Well they damn well should put in the work if they are planning on selling it again less than 3 years after it first released.
Sony’s greed in this instance is very strange. They could easily reward people who are already within their eco system with free upgrades. After all, they are current customers!
@Juanalf not 60fps tho or native 4k or raytracing.
@SilkySmile89 thing is they did it with TLOU 1, called it the definitive version, did you complain then?
I agree it should be $5 not $20
If you told me the PS5 demo was just the PS4 game I would believe you, it changes barely anything. Miles Morales did show some effects that looked next gen, this one, meh
I think it looks nice. I am very confused why Sony doesn’t release HDR YouTube videos. I am really looking forward to some potential future Digital Foundry comparison between PS4 Pro original, vs PS5 BC Boost Mode, vs Remaster with Ray Tracing vs 60fps version. I never played this game and have no allegiance to either character model. Happy to pay $20 for whichever is the better version. I will likely wait until the price drops though.. $50 for MM seems steep. Maybe once reviews come in and I have more confidence.
@TheFrenchiestFry correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the combat in this game similar to Arkham games or Assassins Creed where it’s kind of like ‘combat simplified’ or ‘dial a combo’ ? I stayed away from Spider-Man for this reason.
I wouldn’t have thought the extra frames would make a difference in a game like this.
For stuff like Platinum Games action titles or FROMSOFT games it would make far more of a difference having 60fps.
@koffing HDR can be so weird sometimes. It’s something that can be implemented really badly or super well.
In the Tomb Raider games it is done really well. When I booted up Nioh 2 for the first time though, I had to fiddle around with it multiple times because it made the entire game look weird and washed out, and visibility was really low.
Maybe Sony don’t make their videos HDR because they want to capture a larger audience including those who don’t have newer monitors? I’m just guessing.
@Arnna Spider-Man 2 (The movie game) was technically the first to incorporate this kind of combat system with counter being mapped to a button and chaining attacks with counters and the like with the whole Spider-Sense system
It's doesn't explicitly scream Platinum games to me, like I still think Bayonetta and DMC feel different enough, but it's safe to say if you've played Arkham or the Activision era Spider-Man games like Web of Shadows or Ultimate Spider-Man, you'd be perfectly accustomed to it. It even brings back the mechanic where you web crooks up before they have a chance to attack you again when you knock them out.
I personally have no problem doing this kind of stuff at 30fps since it doesn't require a large amount of precision to start chaining attacks and combining them with web tricks, but the 60fps is definitely going to be a lot more substantial of an upgrade than literally anything else in this ""remaster"" in my opinion.
@TheFrenchiestFry thanks for the info. Spider-Man is most likely not for me if the combat is modelled that way. I stopped playing Batman and Assassins Creed games because I hated the combat. It feels too rigid and button mashy to me.
Most fast paced games would benefit from better frame rates. Can’t wait till FROM games no longer have frame pacing issues!
@theMEGAniggle that's another story. They put the extra effort cause the game was ported from PS3, but now they have no excuse for this. They are just taking gamers for granted this time around. What's the reason behind all that branding "PS5 enhanced" if you will start making "remasters" of all your games that will work through BC on the PS5.
@Ken_Kaniff during the jump from ps3 to ps4 there were loads of games which were cross generation. Tomb Raider, TLOU, COD Ghosts. I don’t think TLOU was full price on PS4 though. Ghosts had a free updated I think. This isn’t new anyway. I agree that Sony shouldn’t be gouging their current customers though. It’s bad practice to treat existing customers like this.
@Arrna. Yeah, maybe it’s with the format. On YouTube though I have seen HDR videos from Digital Foundry and others for Spiderman and, on my screen, they look sooo much nicer. I would think with PS5 Sony would want to show that. Same for loading times.
As is usually the case with these things, I can see literally no difference. Lol
@koffing I grabbed a 4K tv and decent monitor pretty early on. Although they are common and cheap now I suspect that a lot of people are still using old hardware. So yeah the only reason I can think of is not dividing their audience.
Digital Foundary is gonna be watched by people who love high end graphical stuff.
@SilkySmile89 you are right but I don't know if they promised PS4 games will be enhanced outside of frame rate smoothness and speed of loading. This is new assets, RT, doubling of frame rate etc. It is a remaster not an enhancement so by all means you can still play your PS4 version but it won't be a PS5 version. You have to pay for that.
Other than the reflections in the building, and a few small textures in the background, I couldn't tell the difference between the PS4 and PS5 versions (and sometimes I thought the PS4 version looked better). Generational leap it is not. At least not from these videos.
I expect actually playing it will have a much more noticeable impact than these comparison videos.
@invictus4000 You are not alone. If you stop and look at the textures on small objects in the background (a soda can, a garbage bag, etc...) you can see the detail level is much better on the PS5 version (and the reflections on the buildings), but everything else looks pretty much the same (just a little brighter).
This shows that it really is a work in progress. The details are gone, the hdr looks a bit washed out. The faces look bad on the PS5.
What generational leap? It's an enhancement patch... Like sack boy and miles will be getting.... For free. Except it's $20 with purchase of miles.....
Looks good.
But this would be like me replaying old games in my Steam library because I can now select Ultra and RayTacing with a new RTX3080.
Same game with a 4K texture pack and RayTracing update. At least not $60 and 600p like all the rehash on Switch. But that is not saying much.
Give me SM2, and I'll pay $70 for it. I'll stick with BC for this one.
Warms my heart to see everyone finally waking up on dunking on PS's damage control articles.
I hope we can get 60 fps and updated graphics mode with 1080p, I don't care about 4K resolutions.
I got the ultimate edition with the bundle I bought. Only going to play miles morales. I already have the platinum for spider man and these changes aren't enough to warrant a second play through.
Seems like there are lots of visual cutbacks for the improved frame rate in performance mode.
@Paranoimia I'm pretty sure those raytraced reflections in Windows are in quality mode, not performance. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, it's not worth the time for someone who has completed 100% with all dlcs.
Yeah I mean I'm sure it's better but not worth paying for the upgrade. Microsoft is upgrading their games pretty much the same as this (Forza is also going from 1080p30 on the One to 4K60 on Series X) and it's a free update..
I've never really had an eye for graphics and all that crap. It just looks like someone turned up the brightness setting. Gimme some footage of PS5 exclusive games!
Will it also make combat feel less identical to that of the Batman games..? 😏
HDR is relative, as it will tend to look different per TV and per individual settings the owner has made. 🤷🏻♂️ Still, yes yes, for continued press passes: "this is awesome!!", etc etc...
To be honest, I can't see much of a difference. Spider-Man is already such a beautiful game that ray-tracing didn't make a huge impact for me. They could just unlock the frame rate in the original for a free upgrade and call it a day.
Also, I understood that performance mode lacks ray-tracing, does that mean that it's either ray-tracing or 60fps?
"generational leap"? come on now. no need for the sensationalized headline. there is a new character model which most people dislike. there is a 60fps upgrade which is par for the course next gen (bare min upgrade). some of the shadows actually look WORSE in the enchanced edition (lots of shimmering). there is some reflection work (windows reflections) which is pretty nice. but "generational leap" this is NOT. the upgrade should be free for all ps4 owners. sony is turning into a terrible publisher day by day. it should be thankful towards its loyal community once in a while and throw us a bone. this minimum upgrade is simply not worth the hype or attention.
Nothing there screams paid remaster. It's free update territory. Especially if it's ray tracing or 60fps, and not both.
Note to you guys: Generational leap is obviously not what this is, but I thought it was obviously a Spider-man joke too.
"Generational leap"? Generational half step would giving them the benefit of the doubt. They're not even making the "quality" mode 60fps...
I'll give the site the benefit of the doubt and assume the title was just word play and not fan boy nonsense.
So no difference whatsoever then.
@SpicyTacos101
He actually looks a lot like Kieran Tierney from Arsenal.
😂😂😂😂
I'm not normally one to piss and moan but this is so ridiculous, Iv never played this and don't intend to, granted the reflections and stuff look pretty cool but the games 2 years old and looks great anyway just give people with the game the free upgrade to frames and Res and be done with it, instead of trying to milk the fan base with something a little more shiny, to be honest it's a joke, @SilkySmile89 you'd like to think so buddy, but ultimately money talks and if enough people buy the remaster it's only going to give them the insentive to do it again and again, the only way to get companies to stop with their bull**** is to hit them in the pocket, if this goes down well enough for them and the profits nice I wouldn't be surprised to see all their exclusives from the last few years get this same treatment instead of the free upgrade path, here's to hoping people respond with their wallets tho and let Sony know this isn't what we want !!!
And the fact they have locked this behind the ps5 miles Morales ultimate edition to get people to pay £70 for the privilege is beyond filth
@JapaneseSonic
Yes, it's like people dont know the difference between a remaster and a remake.
🤷♂️
@JapaneseSonic yeah I understand that mate, that's why it's even more irritating, if they want to go down that route why not make it a stand alone upgrade that people can pay for through the old game if they wish to, instead of locking it behind the ultimate edition of miles, this doesn't even effect me so I don't know why its bothering me but it stinks
@JapaneseSonic yeah it was sorry about that, edited it as soon as I see it
Yes yes, its £20, it should be free yadi, yada.
I wouldn't replay it even if it was free. (I'm more interested in Miles)
I'd rather people complain about all the prices going up unfairly in the UK for sofware AND hardware on PlayStation AND xbox.
@JapaneseSonic
Nope haha
This game is now less than £20 on the ps4 and they expect people to pay £60 for these small graphical tweaks? Your having a laugh.
So the only reason is the morales version. I think I'll pass.
I want this game for PS5, but not interested in Miles Morales, will have to wait until its available digitally (on it’s own) I suppose.
Played through the first game, look forward to doing it again
Watching the comparison video on my mobile won’t be doing it any justice but I’ll still get the remaster regardless when I get a PS5 since it’s one of the few exclusives I didn’t finish when I had a PS4.
It shouldn’t be locked behind the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, it’s a scummy tactic that Activision used when they bundled CoD MW Remastered with Infinite Warfare.
So we know this remaster will be having options like performance mode for 60fps and resolution for 4K but where does the ray-tracing fit? Will it be having it’s own mode with reduced graphics and frame-rate? Or will it be included in 4K mode with 30fps?
I was honestly expecting games that aren’t cross gen and only on PS5 and Series X to have it all, 4K 60fps with ray-tracing and no compromises. We’ve had games in 4K 60fps on X1X and PS4 Pro but the PS5 and Series X aren’t able add ray-tracing to both 4K and 60fps without making the game 1440p or 30fps?
I'm paying £400 for THAT? May as well keep PS4.
I don’t see the next gen leap, personally. 60fps will be very nice, but you then lose a lot of the visual bells and whistles.
I dont think push square know what generational leap is
Really not sure why they led with Performance Mode for a video. You’ll only feel the improvements made by 60fps when playing. Would have been good to see the full fat visual upgrade.
@Steel76
Erm...isn’t the fact it’s running in performance mode the clue that it isn’t going to look much different? We’ll have to wait for them to show standard mode for that.
I agree about the lighting in the cut scene. Yes, I’m sure it’s far more realistic and properly accounts for the space and light sources etc, but the pre rendered shadows of the original just look far more dramatic.
@MaccaMUFC
Ray tracing is in the non performance mode as standard.
Why has this been left for the community to compare? Why hasn't Sony created a video like this to explain? It's getting to breaking point with all this silence... I'm starting to regret my preorder.. and that's a bad and unnecessary feeling for a loyal PS gamer.. It's the arrogance that Sony is giving off that's really hitting the hardest.. Coupled with more PS+ games that are on PS Now.. And it feels like we're being taken for a ride..
And these differences? Are they really worth charging us for? After letting us preorder blindly? Not convinced. It's a cynical cash-in..
Well the reflections are cool, not sure I ever struggled with 30FPS on the PS4 Pro at any point to warrant the upgrade...
@JJ2 I'm fairness, there are examples of remasters completely overhauling the graphics. Talking, Halo CEA, Skyrim, Saints Row 3.
And in a generation where other games are getting more improvements for free, if you're going to charge for a remaster, you're going to have to put in more effort.
Never knew a "Generational Leap" was a FOV bump.
A generational leap for me was playing Battlefield 3 on the PS3 with 24 players and 12 fps with half a second input lag, then going to BF4 with 64 players and smooth input.
BF4 was the reason I bought a PS4 and I still play it to this day. PS5 has yet to show me such a game. Maybe Cyberpunk on PS4 and PS5 will have massive differences and could be a system seller.
Is it just me or is the ps4 face model for peter much more detailed? You can see pores and face contours better. Even if new one is younger don't young people have pores too?
@theMEGAniggle Uhhhhhhh except it is 60fps? Nobody cares that it isn't 4k. 1440p is perfectly fine and looks great. Honestly not that big of a difference, except to the biggest of graphics snobs.
@CuzzoWuzzo you're gonna have to learn to read better
I am sooooo GLAD SONY bought Insomniac Games!!! They seem to be working on loads of stuff now for the PS5 which is COOL Insomniac Games are worth 7.5 Billion and not...
Just goes to show how good the PS4 is...
@CosmicGypsy369 I hope most people would buy the normal edition of SM - MM cause they already played through the first game on PS4, as did I. I don't have no incentive to buy the ultimate edition, even normal edition, I will just wait for the price to go down. 50€ is to steep for a smaller game that most probably they where thinking to release as a DLC for Spider-Man.
@Juanalf ps4 pro can’t do raytraced reflections which seem to be the star of the remake
@OneManDroid I’ll take the preorder off your hands
@RenanKJ how did raytracing not make an impact when it’s clearly the BIGGEST visual difference we can see from the video/screenshots
@Bamila welcome to pc gaming
@wiiware of course you will as long as your tv supports it
@koffing Digital Foundry is going to have their hands full this next gen... I’m looking forward to testing it all out myself!! Once the tech is in my hands there’s no reason to watch their videos anymore lol
Much as I really want to see a big difference, like most here I'm not, which all feels a bit disappointing. But then again, I'm not seeing it for real on a 4K TV. Maybe the difference is more pronounced in reality.
There's hopefully a big difference in the 'feel' of the game when playing with the DualSense controller, though. so lets not discount it just yet.
@2cents I mean 60 fps mode with great visuals like demons souls (that game resolutions is 1440p), I don't care about 4K resolutions. The graphics on 60 fps mode in this game is not that different compared to ps4, miles morales 30 fps trailers is way better visually compared to this.
@2cents I agree that it provides the biggest visual difference between the versions. It still doesn't impact me much though, because I already see Spider-Man as a really beautiful game, it doesn't add much to the experience. I expect to fall in love with ray-tracing in slower paced games such as Resident Evil where you get to see the details more.
@2cents haha! No fear! Worst case scenario is I sell it for twice the price nearer Xmas! 🤣
@JapaneseSonic Honestly the graphical facelift from the PS3 Uncharted games to PS4 was considerably more noticeable than Spider-Man from PS4 to PS5. All these changes except 60fps feel just incremental enough that you probably won't be losing much if you just play the PS4 game on PS5.
All I am going to say IS........ I am not buying Spider Man Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for Spider Man Ps5, I have 100% the Ps4 version and I am not buying it again just for better graphic/faster frame rates.
I may be tempted a year down the line when the price drops
To me, the PS4 version looks miles (sorry) better. The lighting and colour grading seem to be well thought-out and intentional. Here, it's like they just flipped the ray-tracing switch and said "violà!" The shading on characters in that cutscene is especially bad, like they don't have any shadows on them. The bleaker, colder ambient light outside feels much less like Spider-Man, too.
Super disappointed.
P.S. The only thing I didn't like in the original was that Perer's face seemed much more fake compared to Otto or MJ. Then they announced they were gonna improve it and I was like "wow they get it". But they made it two times worse instead. Way to go.
If anything PS4 looks better to me. PS5 is just brighter and more washed out. This video has made me less excited about the PS5, as it makes it seem like it is not much of a step-up at all.
PS5 has new lighting and ray traced reflections, I'm still not of the mind this is a remaster. On PC this would just be tick boxes and sliders in the graphics menu. I had really hoped this gen would do way with reselling the same game with a different set of graphics opinions enabled. Hopefully MS will be more competitive this gen to push competition and encourage both companies to be more consumer friendly
@TheFrenchiestFry as it should have always been.
Oh please, the difference in actual graphical fidelity is bare minimal at best. The lighting isn't better, it's simply different, changed to give it a different look. Probably because things like that fool the technologically ignorant.
@Deadcow yeah well, with a game only two years old that is clearly using an engine that is vastly superior to most of the engines games run on these days, there wasn't a lot they could actually do beyond imoroved rug textures. I mean people expect miracles from hardware when that's simply not how hardware progression works. Much less so now than ever.
Someday they'll be giving this away as a PS plus game
@KirbyTheVampire it's not $70 for the remaster, though. It's $30 for the remaster, and Miles is $40
@KirbyTheVampire what are you talking about? its not 70 for the remaster spiderman ps4 version. it's only 20 dollars its 70 for the ultimate edition of spiderman miles morales that includes the remaster version of spiderman ps4. 🤪
I really don't see the difference between them. Seriously the leap between generations is tiny. Load times being the only thing that might be different [I'll believe it when I see it].
It's mostly the HDR. Everything else looks fine but not "next gen". Adding some low res ray tracing and better models (mostly the texture itself) is PC 2 years ago but worse... We won't see any of the systems actual potential until 2021. Console launches are not showcases no matter how much we want them to be. Stuff always gets much better.
Not at all impress but i think they needed to get this remaster quickly out so except 60 FPS the rest is nothing wow.
