One of the criticisms thrown at Marvel's Spider-Man is its use of playable side characters. Though you spend the vast majority of the game in control of Peter Parker, the PlayStation 4 exclusive occasionally has you play stealth missions as Mary Jane, and other characters too. These segments are slower paced and less fun than the main event, and even big fans of the game will recognise them as a weak spot. When it comes to Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it sounds like this idea has been abandoned.
Speaking with Game Informer in a video interview, creative director Brian Horton is directly asked whether you'll play as Miles' friend Ganke Lee, or anyone else, during the adventure. Horton's answer is very straightforward: "We are Miles 100 per cent of the time," he says.
He continues: "We wanted to focus on the two parts of Miles. Miles as a kid, as a non-hero ... and then we have of course all his superhero stuff. But really focusing on Miles allowed us to put maximum effort into delivering the best Miles experience we could." Horton goes on to talk about balancing the fast-paced action of the character's crime-fighting with slower moments where you're playing as regular Miles. We've seen a little of that in one of the gameplay videos, where he's casually walking through the snowy streets.
So, we'll be in control of Miles Morales for the whole game, which makes sense given its name. Do you like the sound of this? Were you a fan of the side character sequences in the first game? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Just like The Last of Us Part II where they said we'd only play as Ellie...
This is a good thing in my opinion. Keeping it simple. No need to shove a load of pointless quests in with side characters I'm not bothered about. The only other character that would make sense is playing as Peter Parker if the abilities you earned in the previous game carried over to his sections. Looking forward to playing a different Spidey style with Miles!
This is going to be great! I don't mind Peter taking a break as he will need it in Spider-Man 2 when the Green Goblin and Venom arrive!
Never understood the complaints about that to be honest, it helped break the game up in a fresh way for me. A lot of it that I have seen basically boils down to "whY am i plAyiNg as A WOMAN it's an ageNDa it's supposed to be spiderMAN" etc etc.
@BowTiesAreCool I have never heard or see anyone say this. The complaints were that the MJ missions were boring stealth missions nothing more.
I hate stealth missions in gaming with a passion, but never felt spider-man really had an onerous amount, or that it really was massively forcing stealth. Not like huge disappointments such as Gravity Rush 2 anyway, which constantly broke up fun gameplay with stealth.
@BowTiesAreCool It doesn't boil down to that at all, its that the MJ stealth sections were generally bad and too long. @Deathaxe made a good point, where she was instructing Spiderman it wasn't too bad.
I do like side characters within a game and it was ok for me in first Spider-Man, even if it was not so action based. But that is it, not all are alike.
@Zuljaras Seen more complaints from that type than about it being boring, but I wouldn't presume to know the entirety of the internet.
@Robinsad I agree, it's nothing to do with it. Stealth sections were decent, but that's subjective.
I am with Bow Ties here, the critism of those sections were way overblown in my opinion. I got through them in 15 minutes flat, they were such a small part of the game and moreover, I found it quite cool to watch Spidey do his stuff from the perspective of a bystander.
Don't get me wrong, I don't have any thoughts on the subject of this news item, I am happy to play the game that the devs choose to create for me to enjoy.
But what if I want play as Spider-Cat. 😕
The side characters are okay, but given the option I want to play the most fun characters, which is spider-man/miles morales.
If I can't play as SpiderCat, i'm out
Ghost of Tsushima's forced stealth sections were alright, I had no problem with them.
But Spider-Man's with the side characters? Hated them.
Well that's a surprise to me, I had no clue people didn't like Miles and MJ's part. I never felt there was anything bad about getting connected to the characters in such a short part of the game. I had plenty of time with Spiderman doing all the maps side quest. Now I Know.
Those sections in Spider Man were always baffling to me. I mean, who thought it'd be fun to play a lame, forced stealth section as a side character in a game where you get to play as Spider Man? I'd expect that sort of design in a game made ten years ago, but not in something made in current times. Just felt so weirdly archaic.
Good. I don't want to play forced stealth sections. They always suck.
@Alfieburns I loved Ellie sou had no issues with that.
@thefourfoldroot bummer statement Gravity rush 2 followed the first well. i disagree your comment otherwise i become someone being so dissapointed. Society is focusing too much of that regardless of the ip, game , movie etc they talk about so untrustable
@Darylb88 He will be playable
@Lovespuds.... I agree with both you and Bow Ties........ The complaints about the sections are just manly entitlement no matter what the complainers try to spin it as....... If the are sections to be properly be critisied as the MJ and MM sections, it's the Pigeons missions and bomb missions which seem out of place in the game (why in the world a Super Hero waste time chasing pegeons...... That's is dumb and this is the section of the game that should be called out and I wish there is no pigeon chasing in Miles Morales).
The MJ, MM, Lab, Homeless Shelter mission are so well done that I actually prefer more of them...... They make Spiderman and Peter Parker believable as a character and they also give depth and characterisation to narrative and story and the MJ and MM themselves............
@GREGORIAN But pigeons were purely optional, doing the stealth missions was mandatory. The stealth missons didn't really bother me, but they were definitely not my favourite part of the game.
Having no playable side characters will mean the game will be very short. I expect it being able to be beaten in 4 hours.
Eh, I thought they were fine. I personally liked them but you can't please everyone
@Alfieburns I'm kind of glad you didn't only play as ellie, after a while playing her side of the story got to feeling monotonous to me because I kept having to mow down groups of enemies.
I don't really care who all you have to play as, as long as screwball is dead and gone or something. She and her missions were annoying in the main game and damn right insufferable in all 3 of the expansions.
@jbreez00 oh I had no problem playing as someone else other than Ellie. I'm just using it as an example of why we should maybe take this which a pinch of salt
