As the first PlayStation 5 console embargo lifts, media outlets and YouTubers primarily in the US are able to unbox the next-gen system itself and reveal what it looks like in real life. The same goes for the PS5 DualSense controller and even the cables you'll use to hook the console up to your TV. We can confirm that Push Square is receiving a PS5 console in the very near future, but it didn't arrive in time to participate with the lifting of this particular embargo. We will provide extensive coverage of all things PS5 henceforth.
So, what do we have? The very first thing you'll see when you open the box is a user's manual, power cable, and the DualSense controller. And then there's the gigantic PS5 system itself along with more goodies such as the stand and USB-C cable. IGN then compares the size of the console to other systems such as the Xbox One, PS2, Nintendo Switch, and a banana. Wait, what?
Do you like the look of the console in the flesh? Let us know in the comments below.

While this does whet the appetite, I am more interested in what I assume the next stage will be, actually testing the device!
Great that PushSquare is acknowledged ! You deserve it guys.
I really hope it comes with a banana.
I can't wait to have a PS5, but I'm going to have to. Does Astrobot give you a tour of the hardware?
Sony ship it with white gloves and win this generation...
@legalstep I believe the controller more than anything
The outer box was the bane of my existence with the PS4. Trying to get the inner box back in to it without tearing the outer box was an extraordinary test of my patience! đ
Just two weeks and two days left until the ps5 launch in my country đ.
Better unboxing than some of the videos out there
@thedevilsjester Good for you. I'm more interested in the first software that comes in 1 or 2 years.
Lets hope its performance is better than how it looks or sony are doomed
@blacklivesmatter you sounding like a Xbox fanboy.
It's a big boi for sure.
Might have to raise my ceiling.
Bring it on !!!
We needs it
We wants it
Well, that answers everyoneâs question about hdmi 2.1 cable. Yes, itâs included. Quite surprised myself. Doubt Iâll ever use it given my 4K tv doesnât do 120hz. Maybe in the very last years of its life.
Definitely not important but it looks like Sony is using the same cheap looking packaging as always. Of course the system is what's important.
Digital Foundry better get one if this site is getting one.
Astro's play room looks great.
@Artelous Yeah, that's irrelevant to me (though I do hope for some good titles), if they didn't make a single game between now and 2023, the decreased load times alone on my existing PS4 library would still easily be worth the cost.
Great looking piece of tech. The design has certainly grown on me. Hard to believe we're only 2 and a half weeks away, time has flown this year!
I cant wait to open mine, but im not giving IGN the clicks or attention, I will wait for actuals fans of Sony
The design still seems so odd to me. Not that it really matters.
I havenât pre-ordered so Iâll be holding off until the new year now anyway. But I am wondering if I should just wait until the PS5 slim is released (or a PS5 Pro).
This is the first time I havenât bought a new console at launch and strangely Iâm not that bothered. What the heck is wrong with me?!?!
T H I C C S T A T I O N
Whoa baby!! Letâs go.
Funny that he puts on gloves to avoid fingerprints, only to merciless throw the box away.
I have to say, it just doesn't excite me at all. I hate the design of it. None of the day one games appeal to me at all. The only thing that I'd be getting it for is the load times and the quietness, and I can live with what I have for a while longer. Maybe once they make a smaller version or start releasing some amazing games.
Decent vid, the main thing I took from this is that I will definitely be placing mine vertically which I am not a fan of but I didn't like the wobble when it was on it's side!
It's a chuncky boy xD
I'm glad most previews said the dualsense is a great controller and the haptic is really good, can't wait to try the haptic feedback on ps5
@4kgk2
I was always Sony but I am buying an xbox next generation. I am not a fanboy I just like designs to be asthetically pleasing
I'll be avoiding unboxing videos as I'm going into Nov 19th blind. Gonna take my time unboxing to soak up that new console smell
Ive gone from not wanting one and not being bothered about ps5 what so ever to being really exited for the launch. Doubtful i will find one until after crimbo now but i can certainly wait and read other people's experiences. Cant wait to hear users take on the controller and the UI. Will no doubt get one asap tho.
@Mostik it didn't appear to be on the stand yet.
I'm looking forward to doing this myself in a few weeks.
@blacklivesmatter thats fair enough but are you not going to miss the exclusive games that Sony bring to the table? Not a criticism at all but im just curious as somone that has literally no reason to ever want to own an xbox.
Man what a beast of a console. I'm going to have to make a ton of room on the entertainment stand.
@PaperAlien. I agree with you ign is atrocious.it is what it is.haha.word up son
Glad to hear you guys are getting your PS5 soon, looking forward to hearing what you think. Exciting to see the coverage coming out today, Astro Bot looks like a great little game and I can't wait to try out the haptic feedback on the DualSense!
@LiamCroft When PushSquare does their comparisons, any chance we can get a (stacked) profile view of the PS5 vs the PS4? All of these outlets seem to only care about how tall it is when vertical. I know its physical dimensions, but I would be curious to see a side profile to see how much room its going to need (depth) vs the PS4 (and/or Pro)
Turn the disc version back to front and it looks miles better.
@thedevilsjester " if they didn't make a single game between now and 2023, the decreased load times alone on my existing PS4 library would still easily be worth the cost."
Very much this! It's good to hear someone in PS fandom feel the same. I was just discussing with others yesterday how it feels like the PS scene is all about "I don't care about old games, I just want new games, BC is nice, but who wants to play old games on a new console?" while the XB scene is all about the BC enhancements and a contiguous library. At least I'm not the only one on this side that's interested in the hardware upgrade for existing games as much if not moreso than for the new games!
@NEStalgia I think it really depends on the type of gamer you are. If you exclusively (or mostly) play online multiplayer titles, then you are likely going to only care about, and focus on, whatever is the current trend or the current version of the popular games. There isn't much point in loading up a multi-year old online title when everyone has already moved beyond that.
There are also those that do not buy many games (either because they can't, or they just don't have the time to devote to them) and for them it doesn't make sense to use your limited resources (time or money) on older titles, when the newer titles are what everyone is talking about/playing.
Then there are those that primarily play offline/single player games, and buy/play many games over a generation. I think those types of players care about previous generation games, because there are so many great experiences to be had, and the fact that it came out 5 or 10 years ago doesn't change that.
As a (more extreme) example, I just discovered Yakuza, and I look forward to playing through the entire series at some point.
A PS5 unboxing and a bunch of 3070 reviews.
This day is already a gaming hardware dream - Good times! đđ - looks better than I thought, but it is massive. Hopefully those black shells were not a scam and show up in time.
@blacklivesmatter fair enough to buy what you wanna buy, but i've never heard a dumber reason to not get a console. You're spending $300-$500 and the deciding factor is really the design of the console? Not the games or benefits of each service? The controller? The aesthetic of a piece of hardware is really the deciding factor here?
Now to test it out. Iâm sure reviews are just around the corner.
So is that his signature? the banana?
Anyways this was great to watch and l hope to get a chance to get it on January or December
@thedevilsjester "There isn't much point in loading up a multi-year old online title when everyone has already moved beyond that."
Tell that to the Smash Melee community, lol!
You'd think that, but the strange thing is, at least as far as stereotypes that have some ring of truth to them go, the XB world is probably the more multi-player-first group and has seemed more enthusiastic about the hardware upgrade and library support, while the PS crowd seems more single player focused, and yet seems to be the group less interested in that aspect. At least as a generality. The group interest seems to be an inverse of what the groups are associated with. It could be just a matter of XB promotes the BC and libraries as a core feature and PS has that "why would anybody play old games" meme, and the communities may just follow that lead.
But it's good to see at least some appreciation of an undying library on this side. Wish it was more common!
And yeah, Yakuza is a great "new" find. I promised myself I was going to move over all multiplats over to XB and keep PS for exclusives, but what did I do? I saw the Yakuza 3-5 remaster set on sale a few months ago and bought it to complete the full series on PS. So much for nobody wanting old old games
It's funny, I'm buying PS5 and half of what I want to play on it is basically PS3 games. Old Yakuzas, P5 (well, P5R, still haven't played it yet, and I bought P5R, and still have the Take your Yeart launch edition in shrink wrap....) PSP games - Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2 remaster. At times I wonder why I'm getting a 5, 4 was overkill for half of what I want on PS! (I'll move the new reboot with Like a Dragon over to XB though.)
It's funny to have PS as the "nobody wants old games" console, when Play Station literally started as an SNES + VCR + CD game playing multi-console. Playing "everything" seems like it should have been its natural home from the start.
There's certain new games and sequels I'm interested in and some new IPs that I'm certain will arrive in the next 7 years taht will tempt me, but yeah, I have between PS, Switch, and X1 probably 300 games in my backlog I've bought and still haven't played or at least haven't played beyond half way through. I said to someone the other day that if I don't buy a single PS5/XSX game, ever, I'll still have backlog by the time PS6 Slim comes out. Those "old" games aren't going to get worse, and it would be nice if the hardware makes them all better!
@IronMike No he doesnât.
@NEStalgia Yeah, my (owned) console backlog isn't quite as big as that (a couple dozen, tops), but there are many, many, games I could still add to that backlog. I could easily make it through half of this next generation only playing PS4 games and have no regrets. I would love to include PS3 on that list, but its so sluggish, that I hate hooking the thing up (my Kingdom for PS3 support on PS5!)
@deathaxe I don't use PSNow. I don't have any interest at all in game streaming, even as a path to BC.
@thedevilsjester I think we're in the small minority of the PS fanbase, but yeah, I think most of my PS5's life will be spent being a PS4 that hits target framerates reliably!
PS3 is such a shame how that all went down. Thankfully I think (for better or worse) most of the first party games that mattered to me got ported to PS4 eventually, though not having inFamous1 & 2 (especially 1), Sly, R&C Future, and the original LBP in my library still hurts.... I never hook the PS3 up it's just a hassle, and I hate the controller.) Most of the rest including FFXIII trilogy thankfully I have XB for. I never did play the two sequels. I was so turned off from the base game I stopped caring. But I learned to actually like the base game, over time. It's also on the backlog........
@Kidfunkadelic83 Sonyâs exclusives is kind of ify right now since a couple months ago Sony came out on Twitter and said they are looking into being more of their games to other platforms so if they actually go along with that they will lose more exclusives. Since Microsoft has bought Bethesda Spencer came out and indirectly said that they will be keeping Bethesda games to Microsoft platforms only once Bethesdaâs is done making the games for they have now for Sony so that would mean games like Doom, fallout etc wonât be on ps5 if spencer goes along with that and Microsoft is still buying more studios and spencer came out and said they have 43 new exclusive games coming to Xbox between now and a couple years so they have way more studios then Sony now it just will take time for these studios to make games
Coming from a person who has only ever owned Sony consoles (me) I am going Xbox this gen. Microsoft is making all the right moves this time and they now have more studios then Sony they have 43 new exclusives coming out to Xbox in the next couple years. Iâve never owned a Xbox but this gen Sony has made way too many mistakes this gen and I canât make excuses for them, I hope they fix those mistakes but Iâm glad Xbox is listening and doing the right stuff competition does wonders for us gamers
Looks quite small. I was expecting it to be bigger.
Playstation fatass!
@SteelToeCowboy Thats fair enough. I cant see any of Sony's first party titles going anywhere apart from on to a PC, which im fine with as i dont class PC as the competition. I dont mind Bethesdas games but im more of a story driven single player game kind of guy so games like God of war, Horizon, Spiderman etc are the games that i play and i just think Sony do ir better. Dont get me wrong MS have done a couple i like. I loved Gears of war 1 and 2 and dead rising 3 but since then there has been nothing that floats my boat and these studios that MS already own (looking at Rare) have been absolutely wasted. Either way tho competition is only a good thing for both parties.
@Synthatron_Prime I wouldnât say âas alwaysâ the psvr box was a great design in itself which actually impressed me.
Good: share and option button actually protrude.
Bad: cables look short, looks wobbly horizontal, not all black.
Ugly: it is ugly, it is ugly, it is ugly.
Short cables mean the added cost of buying longer ones. My stands for my PS3 and PS4 keep it elevated to keep the undersides cool and are not wobbly.
The PS5 is the first entertainment, media device, or appliance that i have given much if any thought about how it looks or its color. Just want black, just want good performance.
I really do not want to wait 2 or 3 years for a possible slimmer, better looking, and all black PS5. But what do i do? The PS5 is just too ugly for me to want to shell out 500 bucks no matter how well it performs.
Far too big to fit in most media cabinet spaces for me. Will wait 2/3 years for a refreshed model.
@AndyKazama totally agree. Too many spoilers and not enough surprises so I will wait like you:).
Impressed by the Series X box and its packaging, well thought through etc, much better than the PS5's
