If you're a passionate Trophy hunter like this scribe, the following story is about to really get on your nerves. Assassin's Creed Valhalla has separate Trophy lists for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, meaning if you started out on what is now Sony's last-gen console before switching to the brand spanking new one, you'll need to unlock the trinkets all over again. With no sign of auto-popping in sight, that also includes the Trophies you already unlocked on PS4. How rubbish is that?
Some may see this as an opportunity to get two Platinum Trophies out of a single game, but given the mammoth size of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, that's only really feasible if you ignore virtually every other PS5 launch title. It really is that long of a game. Kinda Funny's Greg Miller broke the news on Twitter this morning as PS5 consoles went on sale in select territories, with Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann following up saying they haven't seen a single game combining PS4 and PS5 versions into a single Trophy list. This functionality was actually present at the start of the PS4 generation with many cross-gen titles which also came to PlayStation 3.
It feels like those of us who have to wait until 19th November 2020 to get our hands on the PS5 are the worst off. With the system launching today across the US, users had to wait just two days between the two releases. Everywhere else, Assassin's Creed Valhalla came out nine days before the next-gen machine. You could be 50 hours into the experience by that point! Deputy Editor Robert Ramsey already is! So, if you've already invested the same amount of time into the game, going back and unlocking all those Trophies once more sounds like a real chore.
Do you find yourself in the same predicament? Were you hoping Trophy lists would be combined across PS4 and PS5 versions? And will you replay parts of Assassin's Creed Valhalla just to guarantee yourself a Platinum Trophy? Explain your decision in the comments below.

Well that's very annoying, I was going to go for the platinum on this and have started on PS4 already putting a good 15 hours in.... to think I'd need to start this again from the start to get a platinum on PS5, or carry on playing it on my PS4, is a bit crappy
@Mellors86x I was considering just finishing off the PS4 Trophy list and not bothering with the PS5 version at all, but then I think it'll get weird when the DLC comes out. I'm not sure if you can purchase and download PS4 DLC on PS5 for a game that gets a free upgrade like this?
Glad im waiting til I get a ps5 to play it
If you download an app like YaPSNapp or PS Trophies, you will see what the actual Trophies are quick enough, right?
Well, that's annoying, fortunately I don't plan to get the plat for this game since the game is too big. I'm interested in playing this game 60 fps on ps5, I hope ac origins & oddyssey on ps5 is patched to 60 fps too.
not bothered getting everything on PS5, nothing for PS4 now and it's going by xmas. and what little there is to play can play it on PS5.
Good job I bought the ps5 version to avoid the temptation of playing... Even though it means staring at the case for a week!
I plan on playing it on ps5, so no biggie for me. I can understand how others may find it disappointing, though.
New-gen "problems"
For some people and for some shorter, more fun, games this could be a bonus. For long grindy and dragging open world games this is a misstep. Particularly if the grind and fun factor is as bad as the Skill Up review suggests. (FYI It’s just one review from one man you may feel differently, that’s OK)
I love a good trophy ping so I really don't mind this. I'm pretty sure there was a few PS3 games which did the same on their PS4 editions, Dragon's Dogma for example.
No. No. No.
I don't like the shared trophy list at all, the chance to play it on both consoles and get the trophy's twice is my preferred way. I'm looking forward to playing through things like No Man's Sky (which I Platinumed at launch) again with all the updates and earning the trophies again. Also Borderlands 3, Mortal Kombat 11 have a new lease of life earning them again.
I really hope they do this to The Witcher 3 as well. It's nice to play through these games again with the trophies to earn.
Er... How about people just wait? If someone's intent is to play it on ps5, then just do that.
What are your talking about? If you are a “serious trophy hunter” then the chance to get two sets of trophies is a boon!
I was sooo close to buying this to start on my PS4. Glad I waited now.
@thefourfoldroot Not everyone has a spare 1000 hours!
Actually this is something that I was expecting, but hoped that would be different.. But ya, I already have it for ps4 but haven't started yet.. And I think I will go for the platinum with the ps4 and won't even bother to play the game on the ps5, when i get my hands on one..
@thefourfoldroot As I said in the article, have fun investing 300 hours then.
@LiamCroft On the PlayStation Store, the Season Pass seems to apply to both PS4 and PS5, so if you buy it on one, you get it on the other.
@Adge I didn't know that no man's sky was getting a separate trophy list for ps5, will defo be going back to this again at some point now.
Personally I prefer separate lists like this. Obviously they should auto-pop the ones you’ve already got, though!
@LiamCroft The thought of playing this still on my PS4 to get that trophy list, when I'll have my PS5 sat there, makes me a bit sad! I know that once I see how quick the PS5 is in terms of loading, waiting for fast travel or game loads on a PS4 will seem like a nightmare.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the DLC is cross platform and should be OK.
40hrs in on PS4 and I don't think I'm going to finish by next week. Will just platinum it using backwards compatibility mode and forget the PS5 trophies. Unless they autopop when using cross-save?
@Bentleyma-
Lol, I know I don’t.
For the general user who cares about trophies this is indeed a problem, I was just questioning the premises that the “passionate trophy hunter” would consider this a bad thing - which is how the article started (I don’t consider myself such by the way, but I’ll hold out fir the ps5 version anyway).
@Daleaf Yep - https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/11789-no-mans-sky
They added so much too it and I never went back as I'd kinda completed it and moved on. It's the incentive I need to see all the new things they've added. Silly, I know, that it takes a trophy list to do that.
@LiamCroft
No, your article is very fair. I’m with you. But the beginning line is a bit off because it is precisely the “passionate trophy hunter” who would ask for separate lists. A subset of those would love to go for the trophies twice, another sub set would prefer them to auto pop. I wonder which will be the case. Auto popping trophies always seems a bit cheap to me.
They did the same with Assassins Creed Black Flag.
Whats the problem with 2 seperate trophy lists? Its not a big deal!
You can play the game twice for double the trophies..... If your a trophy hunter thats 2 platinums?
They did the same with Assassins Creed Black Flag.
Trophy whores will have to complete the trophy list on both consoles. They like chores, so they'll be happy about it
@Adge sweet, haha yea I'm the same with some games, just need that trophy pop up lol.
For passionate trophy hunters, this is most welcome!
As a trophy hunter I'm actually glad they did this. Games like Sound Shapes where you get 3 plats in 1 kind of diminish it. However I am annoyed that this clearly was under embargo by Sony. When a few games launched on Tuesday, there were tons of people wondering how these split lists would turn out. So people needing to start over in a giant game like AC Valhalla is infuriating.
well, this proof even more why some games isn't getting the same updates as some Xbox titles. PS5 titles isn't the same as PS4 titles, even when it's the same game.
Sony doesn't have an equivalent to Smart Delivery, making trophy sharing, save games, and graphical updates to benefit new hardware a bit harder to do at the PS platform.
Nope, I'm genuinely made up! This is perfect, I wanna double up on everything, since I rarely go back to games I've platinumed as the incentive to do so has been diminished somewhat, but if there are no shared trophy lists that's perfect in my book
The only positive on this is opportunity to complete Diablo 3, Glass Masquerade 1 and 2 trophy lists again. Negative is I wanted to put PS4 into shelve. I have no other HDMI slot and PS3 is more important than PS4. So... Have to finish incompleted PS4 games...
I don’t get the point of this... Were PS3 trophies shared with PS4? No, right.
So why on earth should be shared with PS5?
And more, people usually prefer trophies being on different stack even in different region!
Obvious platform separation gets noticed by "journalist" 😒
I would have been fuming if the PS4 list went over to PS5 that is not how it should be so why people are moaning about it is baffling.
This could be a bigger issue for something like Cyberpunk, which won't have it's PS5 version come out for quite a while. Unless you plan on waiting until the PS5 version comes out, you will be stuck with a decision when it finally drops. Do I upgrade and continue playing/play the DLC (if you planned on waiting to play the DLC until the PS5 version) or do I just stick with the PS4 version on the PS5? Assassin's Creed is much easier since the PS5 version is already available (as far as I know).
No one cares about trophies anyway, are we 12?
PS5 upgrade system is so weird and clunky...
I'm playing it on PS4 right now, little annoying but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
I prefer them separate 😬😬
I was wondering how this would work with the cross progression and Ubisoft Connect. I guess it makes sense, especially if you are jumping between Playstation and PC or something.
So how exactly is this a problem? Either buy both games and get two platinum's or only buy one for whatever version you want
After reading (ok skimming over) 45 comments I smell a poll coming on. And I think Liam may lose by a bit.
Not to sound bad mind but anyone who wanted to play the game on ps5 should have just waited. They literally launched 2 days apart.
not really sure why youd play this twice
I'll buy it in the sale for ps4 eventually I got my ac valhalla ps5 edition today roll on next week.
This has just ruined my day. Spent 9 hours on Valhalla. Don't know if I can be bothered to start again.
@Justin_Bieber ok, Justin Bieber.
@thefourfoldroot Or not waste my time on the same game twice and get another experience on a brandnew game with trophies.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Which is EXACTLY what I do. Never replay games, too many out there, and certainly not huge games just for trophies.
I think everybody is forgetting the start of this article reads “If you're a passionate Trophy hunter”. Few are. We’re not. That doesn’t change the validity of my point.
So there is no point in buying on ps5 after playing on ps5 I really don't like shared trophy list like this.
Honestly, I like having seperate lists. It will give me a reason to replay the game in a few years.
Two platinums for the same game are better than 1.
@thefourfoldroot Thats what i mean there are so many fantastic experiences why waste you time on the same one twice. I love trophies buy come on why not get them with a new game. And when i finish a Ubisoft game im happy too move on. Somehow they overstay their welcome. AC Syndicate is a great example if you cut out all the boring filler i think i would have had way more fun. The DLC could have made the game the same length and less boring.
This is why I haven't played any of these multi-platform titles and am waiting for the PS5 versions.
I find separate lists to be preferable over shared lists and auto-popped lists.
I like replaying games, and if I can replay a game and earn more trophies, that's even better.
If you can't be bothered to replay 50 hours of gameplay then you sir are not a true Gamer. 🐺 Us real old school gamers have no problem replaying hours of gameplay to get the same trophies in different versions of the game. 🐺 I've replayed Far cry 3 and 4 to get trophies again. And I'm working on Skyrim for PS4 which I already got all but one trophy for on PS3. 🐺 So it's not a sin for a gaming company to not cross over your trophies it's a bonus because you get to get the same trophy twice and it counts twice on your totals. I think if someone can't be bothered to replay a game on next gen they just lazy and can't call themselves a True Gamer. They just a part time Gamer. For me Gaming is life. 🐺 😊 😜
Are you kidding me? When news got out that the first Spider man game got a substantial facelift, AND added a whole new set of trophies, it was the bees knees. But now it's bad? That must be because getting the plat sucks way harder in AC
I love it when games have separate trophy lists. Just not boring games.
For this exact reason this is why I didn't bother with recent releases and decided to just get them on the ps5 as I thought it would pop up with a few issues down the road. Trophies being one of them and saves.
That's what you get for caring about trophies.
@LiamCroft dude if u bought the season pass with ps4 version u get it free also with ps5 version so say bought gold edition or ultimate edition u get that same edition on ps5 everything comes with it part from trophies
@Salt_AU only difference with new assassin's creed valhalla is save carrys over via ubisoft connect thats to any platform between ps4/ ps5/ xb1x,seriesX,S,/ even pc 😆
Only a big deal if you care about these nauseatingly dull games.
You know what is worse... Having one trophy for PS4 that you can not delete. i completed the Prologue on PS4 before PS5 arrived and now i have a game with 1 trophy... and a game without the trophy for the prologue, they really didn't think this through
