BioWare has confirmed that its next Mass Effect project is underway — although it sounds like it's still very early days.
After (finally!) announcing Mass Effect Legendary Edition — a full remaster of the original trilogy, complete with DLC — the studio wrote: "A veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe. We are in early stages on the project and can’t say any more just yet, but we’re looking forward to sharing our vision for where we’ll be going next."
Again, it's probably going to be a long time until we see this thing in action. The developer has a hole to fill after the disappointment that was Mass Effect: Andromeda, but here's hoping that the team can recapture the magic that once defined this beloved franchise.
What are your hopes and dreams for the next Mass Effect? Look to the stars in the comments section below.

After ME Andromeda and Anthem I wouldn't expect too much
I have absolutely zero faith in Bioware In Name Only
The originals will be great, but anything new from present-day BioWare is likely to be hot garbage.
saying it again, dragon age 4 will be make it or break it for them. if that game underperforms in sales /gets lukewarm reviews EA might realy cut them loose. at that point bioware will only cost them money without seeing real profits in return.
so there might even be a chance we don't get to see the next mass effect.
either that or we will still see it,but it will be another online coop game and then ofcourse it's doomed to fail.
Hope it's a sequel to Andromeda. Lore and continuity is important in this series.
They say it's with a veteran team so maybe, just maybe they will come out with something good if EA don't insist it's online and filled with micro transactions. Still I won't get my hopes up until more is known.
Question is, is it mass effect 4 continuing on from 3 maybe 100s of years later
Or is it a prequel or taking part during the events or 1-3 but with the perspective of someone else and a different squad
Early development? Guess they’ll be releasing it soon, then.
@kyleforrester87 This gave me a good laugh.
I’m commander Shepard, and this is my favorite story on the Citadel.
I want to be excited but it's hard...
I'll be honest, I found MEA okay to pretty good, not what I was hoping story wise but at least it had WAY better gunplay then the first 3, you gotta admit that.
I just hope the next installment has better mission variety since you can only do the same missions so many times before it gets boring even with the great gunplay.
I also hope they add more of those movie night type missions from MEA since it was nice seeing all crewmates enjoying time together.
Hopefully they don't let teenagers do the writing and animation this time.
Woohoo the good news just keeps coming can't wait. I love the mass effect universe.
Let's see how Dragon Age 4 turns out first....
I willing to give them a chance as long as it's either ME4 or a complete reboot, if it's a side story or prequel I won't give it the time of day.
Really cautiously optimistic about this one. I'll have to see how Dragon Age turns out first before getting super hyped. Anthem legit hurt me man lol
Hopefully they don't try to do the whole open world exploration gameplay again because it was extremely tedious in Andromeda.
I just want a great story, characters I give a damn about, and an interesting villain. You know, what Andromeda didn't have.
I dunno, I haven’t really cared about BioWare since Mass Effect 3. I never liked the Dragon Age games and Andromeda wasn’t great so I’ll need to see how this turns out. As it stands though, Larian and Obsidian have been doing more interesting takes on traditionally BioWare style games.
I'll give this a shot. Andromeda wasn't great but it was fine.
My face is tired...
from smiling at this news.
I've not long completed the trilogy and the DLC over the last year or so. Still have Andromeda to get though so am more excited for this and will choose a good time to playthrough Andromeda (perhaps late next year) and then we will have more info.
@nessisonett Not even Origins? I still prefer it to any of the ME trilogy. In fact, I feel like Dragon Age 1 and 2 were in need of remastering, much more than ME games were.
@Jayofmaya Eh, not really. Honestly just thought the first was OK, the second was openly bad and Inquisition was hugely forgettable especially given the other games out at that time.
I have some faith, especially when they say it's a veteran team returning for this (ME:A was made by the B team)
I'm just curious where they'll go- take one of ME3's endings and make it canon, continue and improve Andromeda, go prequel or something else. Even though Andromeda was incredibly underwhelming, I'd like them to continue that story, and give it the trilogy's magic.
I played the original trilogy for the first time right before Andromeda was set to release and it is one of my fondest gaming memories ever(late 30s here). So the hype for Andromeda was through the roof. The first 10 or so hours I was like this is fine it's gonna get better soon except it never did. If anything it got worse.
Dragon age inquisition is amazing.hopefully it comes first the new dragon age.hopefully the new mass effect is really good.word up son
@Jayofmaya. Dragon age inquisition is one of the best game i ever play.amazing game.word up son
Honestly, if the quality of the writing in their last few games is anything to go by, there’s nothing to look forward
@playstation1995 Was it though? It pales in comparison to DA:O, and I despised the MMO-lite aspects of it. Really rubbed me the wrong way
Maybe this is what Anthem 2.0 is a brand new Mass Effect game!
@nessisonett Fair enough about 2, what I mean about a remaster would be to add more unique maps to that one and that's why I think they need it more, along with the graphics trailing behind Mass Effect's.
@playstation1995 I have just got to the last story mission of the base game. Love all of that and a lot of the side quests are brilliant, too. The war table ops could be a bit long, especially when paired with inventory management if you're not crafting gear often, though.
@ShadowofSparta What do you mean by MMO Lite aspects?
Only thing I want is to play as something other then human.
@ShadowofSparta You wouldn't understand, your face hasn't been tired before, has it?
@Jayofmaya The fetch quests. I don’t mind somewhat repetitive tasks, but the shard quests, requisition quests, red lyrium quests, even some of companion quests (Blackwall’s, Cassandra’s etc) were just tedious. I know they’re optional, but as someone who loves to immerse themselves in the world and do everything, they made the world just feel lifeless. Yet I can play DA:O today and still love doing every bit of it
@Xaessya haha this is true. I have yet to relate to that wonderful piece of dialogue. Gosh still can’t believe that passed review
I just hope there will be NO multiplayer.
@playstation1995 "Dragon age inquisition is one of the best game i ever play"
You have allot of best games you ever played, this is like the 8th for you 😄 I haven't played it myself but I'm sure is a fine game.
@Jayofmaya. Are you playing as a mage.the magic is amazing in this game.only dragon dogma have the best magic in a game word up son
@Jayofmaya. I know right wtf is he talking about.the game is a rpg not a mmo.word up son
@ShadowofSparta. Dragon age inquisition gameplay is way better than origins.word up son
Please return to a cinematic/story driven game. I couldn't finish Andromeda--it felt like all I was doing was collecting rocks like the random planet missions in the first Mass Effect.
Its been a long time since the famed Bioware star faded. DA: Inquisition was not great in my book, ME Andromeda, while having some ok gameplay had high school level writing. No idea how bad Anthem really was, but it sure wasn't worth my bandwidth to find out. I have no expectations from the studio at all.
@ShadowofSparta Ahhh, I get you. I had all of the quests as I explored the map as I was always thorough at Skyhold, so I didn't notice as I often gathered and looted EVERYTHING as well. Meant I did like 15 requisitions in a row in Hinterlands lol I ended up with 250 power to spare... Advice is don't bother with requisition requests. XD
@playstation1995 I am indeed! Knight Enchanter, was the most appealing to be a battlemage type. I freeze my enemies for a lot of damage and then slam some sword action. Mostly everything is dying quickly on normal, though. Dragon's Dogma? Man, I tried twice to like that game but the first time I found my mage to weak at the beginning, then I swear I explored EVERYWHERE as a rogue. Killed high level enemies near the start, went down the well, the woods, got the specilization thing and killed the ogre thing.... Then nothing, saw something about a draw bridge but back then I could find mo answers on the net, they just said go to next quest but I had no where to go.
@playstation1995 People called me crazy for saying this but, I really Prefer Dragon Age Inquisition over Skyrim lol Really prefer the Game play over EOS , EOS has better Lore thou but actually playing the game, I loved it so much more
@Turismofan88. You are right.dragon age inquisition is a better game.its fun word up son
