An important moment in the gaming calendar is nearing – and no, we’re not talking about the launch of the PlayStation 5 for once. Geoff Keighley has announced that on Wednesday, 18th November at 12PM ET, the nominees for The Game Awards 2020 will be announced as part of a special livestream. The main event will then get underway on 10th December.
Which five titles do you reckon will be vying for Game of the Year? We’re going to predict, in no particular order: Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us: Part II, Half-Life: Alyx, Hades, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Remember, due to its later than anticipated release date, Cyberpunk 2077 will not be eligible for the awards this year.

I think Animal Crossing will win. They’ll go down the safe route and avoid the whiny nonsense from ‘fans’/grown adults with literally nothing better to do. AC is a great game that’s hugely popular and perfect for 2020 and I’d rather not see a return to the TLOU2 vs GoT buffoonery.
People still care about game awards?
@Akurusu Millions of people watch it every year, so I'd say yes.
@nessisonett My brother gifted TLOU2 to me for christmas, Can't wait to see what I've been missing out on.
@Akurusu It keeps growing/getting more people watching every year, so I would say "yes"
The Last of Us Part II Awards featuring other games I guess lol
Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk (even though you've stated it's not eligible)
@nessisonett I'd love to be as optimistic but knowing the Game Awards history and their clear bias towards single player narrative driven games or trendy titles like Overwatch already puts AC out of winning anything other than Best Family Game like Link's Awakening (I think) last year
Nintendo practically has no chance of winning in any of the major headline making categories if their game that year isn't Mario or Zelda related and that's pretty sad
My predictions
GOTY: Either Last of Us Part II or Ghost of Tsushima
Best Action Game: DOOM Eternal
Best RPG: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Best Family Game: Animal Crossing New Horizons
Best Indie title: Ori & The Will of the Wisps
Best Game Direction: The Last of Us Part II
Best Male Performance: Troy Baker as Joel or Daisuke Tsuji as Jin Sakai
Games for Impact: Necrobarista
Best Action-Adventure: The Last of Us Part II
Best Multiplayer Game: Fall Guys
Best Fighting Game: Either Granblue Fantasy Vs. or UNICLR
Best Score/Soundtrack: Last of Us Part II
Best Narrative: Last of Us Part II
Audio Design: COD Black Ops Cold War
Best VR Game: Half Life Alyx
Best Art Direction: Either Last of Us Part II, Demon's Souls Remake (because next gen bias) or Ori & The Will of the Wisps
@eltomo Witcher 3 is not only completely ineligible since it's a 5 year old game, but it also won GOTY in 2015 lol
Best Game of the Year: Ghost, Doom Ethernal or FF7R
Worst garbage of the year: TLoU2
Best Action Game: DOOM Eternal
Best RPG: Demon's Souls Remake (don't know if is allow)
Best Family Game: Animal Crossing New Horizons
Best Multiplayer Game: Fall Guys
Best Score/Soundtrack: Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Best VR Game: Half Life Alyx
The rest, idk.
Game of the Year: The Last of Us Part II
If it's Animal Crossing then all serious developers might as well give up!
Fall Guys should win something, anything. The Little Game That Could.
Even if you hate the story. TLOU2 had the some of the most polished and amazing gameplay ever.
Hope it does well, but I’m in the camp that loved how much the story messed with my emotions.
@Makina I think the PS5 launch games like Demon's Souls and Spider-Man barely made it to be considered eligible. Jedi Fallen Order literally came out last year the exact last day for a title released that year to be considered for a nomination and ultimately didn't actually make it
@Col_McCafferty Animal Crossing is definitely a shoe in for Best Family Game this year, but it probably won't be nominated for much else beyond that
If Hades doesn't get a single award then I hope the sun explodes.
👻 ghost of tshushima is the goty.word up son
@nessisonett. Animal crossing.is that a joke.ghost of tshushima and nioh 2 is way better .word up son
@playstation1995 Perhaps those games are better. I wouldn’t know and honestly these awards mean nothing, I just don’t want to see petty fanboy infighting and Animal Crossing winning would avoid that. Out of interest, do you have a Switch to play games like Animal Crossing?
@playstation1995 Is your whole shtick just bashing on things that aren't Sony related
Like I love Ghost and am really holding out hope that it wins but like I can be a fan of a particular company without starting petty squabbles that make it seem like I'm sucking a company's shlong all the time
@TheFrenchiestFry. Nah because ghost and nioh 2 is the better game.its just facts dog.i rather play those 2 amazing games than crosding with the animals🤔.word up son
Ghost of Tsushima is my game of the year 🤠
The Last of Us Part II deserves to be GOTY. And I'm not saying that just cuz I'm a fan. Part II has done A LOT in terms of setting new boundaries for the industry. From level design to animation and gameplay. I don't need to get specific, we all know it. The hard work at Naughty Dog totally deserves that award.
BUT
and here's the but. I imagine a lot of people will be pissed off it ends up winning. So I'd rather that flame fades than the game wins this award. Ghost of Tsushima is more likely to win. But then again, we have AC Valhalla out just recently. Dunno how that one is yet but heard good stuff.
All in all, I'm there for the trailers. Here's hoping to see Elden Ring this year
I can see Hades being one of the five up for GOTY a lot of the people who do the nominating seemed to really liked that.
I wonder if everyone forgets about Dreams?
I hope TLoU 2 will win the main award and also many more. Also Hades deserves some as well.
Hope Tlou 2 wins so I can laugh for a full week
Doom Eternal is my goty.
FF7 remake, Animal Crossing, Dreams, Ori 2, Half Life Alyx have a better chance than Ghost. Heard Hades is great.
and Demon Souls can be nominated. If reviewers beat it in time. So it will be either ff7 or demon souls. I could see miles morales. NiOh 2 too.
This year and 2017, 2019 are hard guesses for nominees. Really good games will be left out.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Are you serious ? It's the worst AC ever.
Compared to its predecessors, new horizon canceled too many things that are good from previous version. The coffee shop, the numerous dialog for villagers etc. New horizon for me is like animal crossing pocket camp. It lost the spirit of previous animal crossing.
I agree that this may be enough for a little girl.
But never, it deserves to be nominated for the GOTY.
The winner will be TLOU2 or GOT (but Nioh 2 is a good challenger).
@playstation1995 "ghost and nioh 2 is the better game.its just facts dog"
Ghost is my personal goty but is definitely not fact that those games are better then animal crossing, it has higher review scores then Nioh and Ghost so I would say the facts are the opposite if anything.
Animal Crossing has my personal vote for game of the year. Crafting and terraforming were excellent additions, easily making New Horizons the best in the series
I also wouldn't be mad if Last of Us 2 or Nioh 2 took it. Both great games as well
@Sam-Bridges You're saying all of that purely because you're a fan. That's perfectly fine that that is your opinion, but don't act like that is a fact, and don't lump me in with you by saying we all know it. Thanks.
@Sam-Bridges "we all know it"
Is this like trying to stealthily force us to agree with these notions because like I loved the first Last of Us and only that Part II was okay. It didn't really CHANGE THE INDUSTRY or elevate gaming to a whole new quota. It's a great looking PS4 game but it's far from the one that actually set any sort of standard in storytelling, especially given how ultimately divisive people were about its final quality. TLoU is FAR from the first kind of media that attempted to do a story that featured characters questioning their moral compass, or an antagonist being painted in a humanizing and sympathetic light, nor is it the first story at all that tried to address themes pertaining to topics like revenge being condemned or it being a vicious cycle that affects someone's psychology. It showed a new perspective on it sure, but it's far from an industry defining game, nor do I think it's the best telling of that kind of story at all. Hell I think Daredevil did it way better and more engrossingly with the Born Again story
Like TLoU is fine for what it was, but I wish it was a lot better than just "fine" because it's following up from what was undoubtedly one of if not the best PS3 exclusive.
Ghost of Tsushima actually did more in terms of evolving the genre in which its game was set. After games like Sekiro and its depiction of Sengoku-era Japan still being fused with elements of mythic fantasy with Souls-style flare and faster pacing, Ghost's break away to being more methodical and almost freeing in its design philosophy was what made it the big stand out PS4 first party game this year by far for me
@Juanalf. Nope thats your opinion.i like 👻 ghost and nioh 2 better than crossing the animals.thats a fact.word up son
@playstation1995 You used "I like" and "that's a fact" in the same sentence
lmao how do you contradict yourself that quickly
@Stragen8 Polished? Yes, amazing? Eh not really, it never added much to the gameplay to change it up at all.
@Constable_What
And you avoid saying that people are "fan" (implying that they aren't objective), that’s disrespectful.
Especially since he’s totally right.
It’s a fact, on this generation ND is one of the top 6 studios in the world with CD projekt, Rockstar, FromSoftware, Santa-Monica and Guerrilla.
If only for the effort put into the realization no one did better than these studios.
@TheFrenchiestFry. Because i can do that thats why 🤔.ghost of tshushima and nioh 2 .final fantasy 7 remake and streets of rage 4 for the win.word up son
It's a show for gaming entertainment that's all. I am a gamer and enjoy them even if their choices do not match mine. The winners who ever wins will love and enjoy the win. There no reason to take it personal.
@Kratos-sensei You are a fan and you are not objective. When you're a fan you're giving an opinion, and saying we all know something, or something is a fact based only on your feelings is completely wrong. I'm so sorry (not really) you were disrespected, I really (nope) truly (lies) am, but nowhere in your reply did you state a single fact. Not one.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but naming your favorite studios doesn't mean anything to me. As a matter of fact, I find that presumptuous and pretentious.
Just like the TLOU2.
That's my opinion on that, and that's OK. The world!.... What's this!?!! What!!!??? Impossible! I'm disagreeing and the world is still turning!!! What sorcery is this!?
@Constable_What
First, avoid talking for me, you know nothing about my tastes and preferences.
Second, you confuse objective facts with subjective facts.
The scenario is subjective, you like or you don’t like a story, it depends on the people, you can’t judge on it and nobody here does it.
On the other hand,the realization,the gameplay,the graphics...these are objective elements,it’s concrete as 1+1=2.
On this generation, the witcher 3 is the best RPG, whether we like it or not, it has nothing to do with preferences.
The efforts put to the level disign of RDR2, this is something that has never been done before and that will mark the history of the video game.
But the witcher isn’t my favorite RPG and RDR2 isn’t even in my top 100.
On the contrary, I preferred diablo 3 to 2 but I must admit that diablo 2 in terms of gameplay is far superior.
That, an objective fact, to be able to recognize the greatness or genius of a game even if you are not a fan, which obviously you are unable to do.
@Kratos-sensei You avoid talking for me first! Lmao!
Look up what an oxymoron is, first of all, Mr. Subjective Fact. There's no such thing.
Second of all, look up what a compulsion is.
Quit responding man, you're embarrassing yourself. lol
Thanks for the laugh.
Last of us 2 can't win game of the year. It's too divisive, it might actually jeopardize the franchise.
@Constable_What
He just said even if he has an opinion, acknowledges that another game is more determined to win. Nothing wrong wiith that in my eyes.
My goty is doom eternal, but tlou 2 will in.
@God_of_Nowt Especially when discussing the best games of the year. They should acknowledge they are all good games.
But I like debates where people are specific and explain why their chosen game has more chance than the other.
@LiterallyDoNotCare That's not at all what was said, but OK. There's nothing wrong with what you said.
Stir up some controversy, don't give into the haters, Trump has been vanquished and a vaccine is.on the horizon.
GOTY has to be the Last of Us Part II, don't give it to some bs choice like that animal game or some 'hip' little indie title.
Be brave and make the right decision, make up for that Goose nonsense winning last year.
Word up son.
😉
I remember 2018 when Red Dead Redemption 2 was robbed or not even nominated for so many deserved categories.
@Constable_What Well, excuse me. But that "we all know it" was a part of a larger sentence that I feel like all of y'all who read it misunderstood. It was referring to things about the game that can be objectively evaluated (as there are standards in the industry). I don't want to drag on this conversation, because I've had enough of it on the net about The Last of Us Part II. But I'm not going to change my stance that you've probably misunderstood what I was saying. Either it wasn't in my power to articulate the thoughts correctly or your understanding of it is flawed.
@TheFrenchiestFry I said this before and I'll say it again.
That "we all know it" that y'all are tossing around didn't refer to the things you think it does. It follows a clear sentence in which I didn't even mention Part II's story!
And no, I don't need to stealthily convince anyone that Part II is a game. Go set a copy of it on fire, I don't care. I liked the game and that's all that matters. After all, I play video games for MY enjoyment and you do for yours. There are games we all like and dislike which is how it's always been. I don't even care what game wins the GOTY, I literally said I watch the show because of the trailers and not the awards. Why would I wanna even try and convince anyone that these are facts?
On another note, I disagree with Ghost of Tsushima being the boldest PS4 exclusive this year. I love Ghost of Tsushima and still occasionally pop in and play the game. But differences you mention with Sekiro and the depection of ancient Japan, that's just the setting. It has nothing to do with the game. The game is an open world and I think (here I go stating facts again!) the reason why a lot of people say Ghost of Tsushima did new things for the genre (or sub-genre) is the open world thirst and the low standards set by Ubisoft games, namely Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey. In a way that Ghost of Tsushima didn't even have much competition, all it had to do was be a decent open-world game. Which it is more than that, true. But it didn't really change the genre. It added to its quality but nothing groundbreaking. It's a solid (perhaps perfect) conventional open-world game. It didn't even try to subvert the expectations we have from an open-world game. Again, before y'all get the pitchforks, I loved Ghost of Tsushima, it's one of my favorite games of this generation.
sorry if that was too long.
Edited for typos
@Sam-Bridges That larger sentence was, "I don't need to get specific". That's hardly any context, so if I misunderstood it's because that sentence was really vague and unspecific. There's no objective reasoning in your post at all to warrant something "we all know" either. You liked the game, that's great, I know that, but that really isn't objective either.
Like I said don't lump me in with you, please. I'm sure other people would appreciate that too; just speak for yourself. The Last of Us Part II being a great game isn't a truth that people are denying. People like games for different reasons, and little to none of those reasons are objective, because they're subjective tastes. I'm perfectly content with not liking The Last of Us Part II, thanks, and that's great for me because I know my tastes. No one needs to be pretentious about the video games they like.
And look, I know what it's like to feel something from a game that most people didn't. I freaking loved Death Stranding. It's probably my favorite game of the generation, and people told me I was an idiot for liking it as much as I do. You know, but that's my opinion, and I'm only speaking for me, and I knew I liked it, and obviously that was how I felt about it, and that's fine.
@Sam-Bridges You say low standards set for open world games and yet you only mention Ubisoft titles when there are far better examples from this generation that did it right like Metal Gear Solid V, Breath of the Wild, Witcher 3 and even Final Fantasy XV. Ghost of Tsushima was refreshing in that it actually felt like a freeing game in regards to the fact you start off directionless with no clear way to go and you have to piece together the world using your own intellect. The elimination of stuff like waypoints with clear objectives and linear progression make it so it feels like everything that happens in the game is at your own discretion, which is a refreshing change of pace from even games that aren't too old like BotW which similarly had a very sandbox-style of game design in that it felt like there was no active limit in regards to what you can do in that game.
The fact that you gloss over other examples of good open world games to prove your point actually shows how much Ghost of Tsushima felt refreshing in regards to how it took from the best examples in the genre and added a unique sense of freedom and style that few will likely be able to match. The Last of Us Part II is a story that we have seen before in so many other places, with gameplay that, while better, is only an incremental functional improvement over its predecessor. It's not an industry changer. It set no standards for non-linear storytelling, and the kind of story it tries to tell has been told significantly more effectively in so many other places.
Maybe for a change you should actually clarify you're only speaking for yourself, because lumping all of us in when you say stuff like "WE ALL KNOW IT" and "I DON'T NEED TO GET SPECIFIC" is extremely telling that you kind of have an eschewed, almost completely Sony-biased mindset when there are a lot of people who don't feel the same way at all as you.
@Col_McCafferty How the heck is Animal Crossing a "bs choice"? Can you qualify that statement?
@Tchunga He's probably going to say because it's a Nintendo game or it's too childish because it actually has color
@TheFrenchiestFry Well, I really have nothing more to say, but the reason I didn't mention the titles you listed was because they're from at the very least 4 years ago! Yes, we can talk about Red Dead Redemption 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn too. But those games are one in a long time. Ghost of Tsushima totally deserves a GOTY, but if The Last of Us Part II didn't create new standards for the industry (as you say) then so didn't Ghost of Tsushima. And with that, neither of them should become game of the year cuz they just mildly improved upon what already existed.
Also, I don't feel it's necessary for anybody to clearly come out and put a hundred indications after their comments that it's their opinion. What're we doing? Recording facts out here on Push Square threads? Of course, everything is everybody's opinion. I do take responsibility that my comment may have been vague in wording, but y'all totally misunderstood what I was saying. At least that's my opinion, I think or I guess.
@Constable_What Okay then I owe you an apology, sir. On behalf of myself, I'm sorry. Have a good day.
IMO Half life Alyx deserves to get game of the year awards. That game was something else, I swear. Probably the best game in 2020 imo.
@Tchunga
I’ll answer for him.
First of all, it just doesn’t deserve to win because there have been several games far better than that this year (that’s already a good reason).
Second, I will repeat what I said before.
It's the worst AC ever!
Compared to its predecessors, new horizon canceled too many things that are good from previous version. The coffee shop, the numerous dialog for villagers etc. New horizon for me is like animal crossing pocket camp. It lost the spirit of previous animal crossing.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Do we still have the right to criticize a game without being a "fan" or a "hater" ? (As long as objective arguments are made, of course).
@Sam-Bridges Have a nice day.
@Kratos-sensei Those are very cherry picked reasons. What about all the great stuff that New Horizons added, like terraforming, crafting, or the ability to place furniture anywhere on your island? I'd take any of those features over a coffee shop. And it's clearly not the worst AC ever, It has the highest metacritic score out of any AC ever. Metacritic isn't the end all be all in determining quality but again, you said THE WORST. I don't think THE WORST AC would score so high from so many different critics. And you don't have to like New Horizons, that's not what I'm driving at here, but maybe don't make grand statements like "It's a bs choice for GOTY" or "It's the worst AC" It's incredibly hyperbolic
@Tchunga Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, man.
😉
It's a novelty game, not my bag at all. To award it game of the year over something like The Last of Us Part II would be as stupid and silly as that Goose game winning last year. It makes gaming look frivolous especially in comparison to other mediums.
That's how I see it anyway, disagree all you like.
👍
@Col_McCafferty "yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, man"
@Tchunga
Either you didn't understand what I meant or I didn't mean that the way it sounded.
I don’t have a lot of faith in metacritic me too, but lets compare it to the players notes;
new horizons:5.4
new leaf:8.7
wild world:8.6
pocket camp:7
happy home designer:7
city folk:7.8
AC(2002):8.8
It's the one who had the worst notes of the whole saga, only amiibo festival did worse with 4.1.
I’m not saying it’s a garbage,it’s a nice little family game,(although I agree with the majority,I think 6 or 6.5 is a fair score) but it doesn’t any nomination.
@Kratos-sensei Obviously I was referring to the critic score. Lol. Metacritic user scores are worthless, Games get review bombed for the most trivial, and petty reasons. New Horizons is sitting at a 90, while the second highest (New Leaf) is sitting at an 88. Not too far behind but still, NH is the highest rated AC game
@Makina still trolling
@nessisonett is this a joke?if so i forgeted to laugh, Animal Crossing New Horizons is a amazing game, but is not GOTY worth, Animal Crossing New Horizons is gonna win best family game and end, GOTY is awarded to franchises/games such as God of War,Legend of Zelda, 3D Mario games.
is quite clear that The Last of Us Part 2, Assasin Creed Vahalla or Ghost of Tsushima is gonna win the GOTY of 2020 at the TGA, the GOTY dispute in 2021 is gonna be way more intereting, with Cyberpunk 2077, Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 and God of War Ragnarok fighting to see who gonna win the 2021 GOTY at the Game Awards.
@Akurusu yes, the Game Awards have the same significance of the Oscar and Bafta, to developers and many people, i consider the Game Awards the Oscar/Bafta of gaming
@Giancarlothomaz It's gonna be really funny when AC actually does win and all of you "hardcore" gamers have a literal meltdown.
