Update 2: Well, we're officially confused. The same CD Projekt Red dev that shot down the supposed 56GB patch has now commented on the Xbox One update that's making waves on Twitter.
Yeah, we don't get it either. Does this mean that there'll be two pre-launch updates for Cyberpunk 2077? Or is this one just rolling out for reviewers? We'll let you know as soon as we have some answers.
Update: The rumoured 56GB day one patch for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 may have been debunked, but the reality is that you're still going to have to download and install a substantial update before playing the open world RPG.
YouTuber DreamcastGuy reports that Cyberpunk 2077 has a massive 43.5GB patch on Xbox One. Given that the game was delayed in order to add polish to the console versions, it's fair to assume that a similarly sized update will be available on PS4.
Original Story: Cyberpunk 2077 is just a week away from release, and it honestly feels like parts of the internet are close to imploding. The hype is most certainly real, and as is usually the case with the imminent launch of something huge, a lot of people are currently losing their minds over what is apparently complete misinformation.
Here's what's going on: some people have received their copy of Cyberpunk 2077 early. One such person hopped over to Reddit in order to prove that they had the game, posting a photograph of Cyberpunk 2077 installing onto their PS5. That image has since been removed, but it's still floating about on Twitter.
The original poster claimed that they were downloading a colossal day one patch for the PS4 title — weighing in at a whopping 56GB. Naturally, a number of sites immediately ran with this story as it spread across social media — but according to CD Projekt Red's Fabian Mario Döhla, such a patch doesn't even exist. At least not yet.
It appears as though the 56GB in question is actually the install size of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4. CD Projekt Red has yet to make any official statement on the release of a day one patch.
And that's about it. The only other thing we want to mention is that, again, some people already have Cyberpunk 2077 — and this will inevitably lead to leaks before the game's launch next week. Be careful out there!

Such a patch does not exist yet does not make it better..😆
Nice Cyberpun 😎
56GB is smaller than I expected. Day one patch gon be huge!
Not yet anyway.
They’ve already confirmed there is a Day 0 patch coming multiple times
Isn’t saying PS5 misleading when there is no PS5 version, just a PS4 version you okay through backwards compatibility. There’s been a lot of news for a game that currently doesn’t exist with a PS5 version.
No it's not misleading at all.
@jmac1686 Yeah, and this ain't it.
Cyberdebunk'd
After CoD:WZ update sizes, this is a walk in the park.
I'm wondering what's up with the reviews for this game. Not a single outlet or reviewer has confirmed (not even hinted) they are in the process of reviewing the game. Could CP2077 launch without a single review to accompany it on launch day?
Small spoiler: penis cannons are a thing
@Howson79 There's a review embargo in place at the moment. From memory, I believe that ends in about 4 days time.
Then expect to see all the reviews (they try to maximise the hype at launch by having all the press talk about it at the same time).
Time for a Night City blackout until I'm there myself. Ciao.
And we still don't know how it looks on PS4. Maybe that 56GB download was a trailer for the PS4 version. Or maybe a trailer for the PS4 Pro version, letting you know what you're missing out on when you play on base PS4.
A 56GB patch is overkill. Like wtf were you doing during development if its true lol
@Netret0120 did you read the article? There's no 56gb patch. That's the un-patched game's entire install size.
Its not 56gb its 57gb ..........zing
I plan to buy the game digital version next year when I have ps5, so day one and other future patch should already be included
if the base install is only 56 GB than wow smaller then expected.
thats just the size of your average game these days.
and with all the audio they have in the game (music songs,script etc) they must be realy good at compressing files.
i know that a previous report some weeks ago said that the filesize was stated to be around 75 GB. the one that revealed that 2 discs where gonna be included.
so either that 75 GB will be reached if the day 1 patch is included (would be a 20 GB patch if so) or the latest delay made it possible to compress the files reducing the total install size of the game.
Those who have got it early are saying on Reddit and resetera that the first person view is weird and floaty, and just doesn't feel right.
That would be a big no from me if it's really the case.
After seeing how impressive ps5 games are I'm just gonna wait till the ps5 version!
Just 7 days to wait now, hopefully have my Astrobot platinum in the bag by then because I am pretty sure I won't be playing anything else for a while once I get this.
I expect a day one patch size is irrelevant IMO.
With a game that’s been delayed so many times it’s kinda ironic that some people have the game “early”
56Gb is the datadisc install for the game if I understand this right.
Has nothing to do with patch whatsoever.
@Jaz007 @TheAdza
Normally I would think wording like that wouldn't be misleading, but too many people (even on this site) have shown that they don't understand that there is, currently, no PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077, and there will not be one at launch (it will come "sometime later" according to CDPR), so it should be made clear.
@Jaz007 Yes, it is.
Hasn't it been already confirmed that the game is 70 gb? Then how come the instal size is 56 gb? Or is 70 gb just that the space you need in hard drive while it's only 56 gb?
In which case that's low, for such a big scale game.
Updated the article. Not quite 56GB but it's still massive, apparently.
Man this is hilarious, I feel sorry for the folks defending CDPR like if they are saints and would never release a patch to a game which looks huge with such a small install base number, even if somehow it’s less than 40 on PS4 which I doubt it’s definitely gonna grow with time either way
Ridiculous its almost the game size. Very worried about the game now clearly been rushed they should of just released it in 2021 along with Next Gen upgrade.
@GKO900 Agree any other dev would be getting hammered now. This is unacceptable and lazy.
So this is consistent with the rumours and news: that the vanilla consoles needed extensive work after going gold, just to bring them to some level of acceptability.
@Max2574 I'm not sure it can be called 'lazy'... CDPR clearly delayed the game in order to produce this patch. Devs were probably working around the clock to get it done — and it's only just being released now.
Not saying that's a good thing, but "lazy" would be not releasing the patch at all.
I'm downloading the update now on Xbox and its close to 56GB.
Gonna take 10 minutes for that to download.
Thank goodness for physical game ownership! </sarc>
Which one is the Xbox One again?
Edit: Nevermind, I looked it up. Base Xbox. I swear I need a chart or something.
Man i remember when days gone got a lot of flak for having a day one patch of 13gb-20gb. I wonder if that same people will have the same attitude with this.
I’m buying this digitally so hopefully come release day both game and the huge patch will be installed. I hope the pre-downloads start soon!
I’m staying on the fence with this game.
Not sure I’m gonna like it, so much in game chatting looking at previews.
Not sure about amount of bugs.
Not sure about performance.
Waiting for real PS5 version.
Plenty to play anyway.
@zupertramp LOL, yeah their naming scheme makes Nintendo's look genius. Love the platform, hate the names.
I wish that patch was a bit bigger really.
https://twitter.com/fabiandoehla/status/1334562994748002308?s=19
A CDPR dev responded with this, NGL I'm so confused.
@ShogunRok I'm not sure if you've been asked this yet, but do you have any idea when the Push Square review will be released? Thanks!
@huntbearpig Sadly I have no idea right now.
Wish I could say more!
Updated the article... Again. Now we're just confused.
This is an absolute mess of the highest order. Honestly the entire development cycle has been a mess. From the endless cycle of crunch to the debacle that is the PS4 version, this is just not on.
so this is not the day 1 patch but a patch that will release some time after release?
or is this some "secret" update/dlc that they have not announced yet but somehow has found it's way to the xbox one. that would be very unlikely but also would explain the big size.
43GB is still massive though. That's like almost 10% of the PS5's storage. Not even the game, just the day one patch, and it may not even be the only day one patch.
@ShogunRok Aren't they just saying that isn't the launch-day update? In the same way that the update on launch date probably won't be the same as the update available post-launch after patches start happening?
@Octane It seems like big AAA games are generally in the 50-120GB range these days. I think we just need to learn to accept it.
The good news is that since it is technically a PS4 game you could run it off external storage if you wanted to.
IMO they're just saying they're already rolling out fixes for reviews and such but even more things will be fixed before launch - which might mean the day 1 patch will be slightly bigger
Looks like the final Day One patch will be smaller, or bigger. Hard to say, but it will not be 43 gigs, that's for sure…
if the day 1 patch is of similar size then yes that would be a LONG install but if it makes the game run on base ps4 without noticable problems then i'm all for it.
I have saved up about 80GB for Cyberpunk so anything below that is a bonus!
My download on Xbox for this game is 59GB so not sure why dreamcast guy has 43GB?
@ShogunRok Fair enough, thank you!
@evan23 Or we don't. Accepting it will only make it worse. Ghost of Tsushima was a massive open world, and it was only 35GB. Remember Sekiro? Less than 13GB. Games CAN be a lot smaller, but due to bad optimisation, they balloon out of proportion. Some devs care and work hard to keep the file size small, but some don't give a crap, and we end up with 40GB day one patches.
Let's hope for a post-launch edition to avoid a blu ray size patch when you install the game
@ShogunRok I think its becoming the norm now release the game add huge day one patch. Patch as time goes by.
@Octane
They've worked on this game for 8 years, I think they give a crap. If the world is as huge and complex as they say it is, getting the whole thing under 70gb is pretty amazing. Why not wait for it to come out before whining about how bad you think it is?
@ShogunRok do you know when the digital version can be predownloaded or is it just the 10th in the UK?
We aren’t at day 0 yet so the patch on the store prob isn’t the final one yet. Problem solved.
I’m not gonna lie, I’m disappointed in the disc they’re putting out. It wasn’t ready for released and they should have made the disc and then delayed sir for an update. A day one update that’s over 40GB should not be allowed by Sony or MS. This is honestly ridiculous and disappointing for CD Project Red.
I spent € 40 for tbe Goty edition of TW3 with all content on disc, and that was great.
Let's see when I will be able to do the same with CP2077...
@Rhaoulos Yeah, I'm hoping for a PS5 version at this point, but I really wish they told us what their plans are. No concrete word on a next gen version. We don't even know how the game runs on base PS4. CDPR is usually very transparent, but they're deliberately vague about this stuff.
@LordSteev With a 43GB day one patch, and the fact that the game already comes on two discs (72GB presumably), that already takes it over 115GB. And there's another day one patch on the way, maybe? Just because they care about the game doesn't mean they care about the file size, those two aren't mutually exclusive.
So at the very least, day one, looks like there IS going to be a big update.
Of some kind.🙃
Me, I care not a jot.
Pop it in the PS5 let the disk/s install, and the update. My t'internet isn't lightning speed, but it does a respectable gig every 70ish seconds from Sony servers.
Won't be booting it up 'til little'un in bed in the evening anyway.
Will I give it a proper play through? Probably not.
Got 5 or 6 more areas of Demon's Souls to go.
Finished Miles Morales, (sold that on for £10 less than I paid for it), and dipping into the PS+ Collection, even though I already played all the 'decent' ones on PS4.
So it could be months before I concentrate on it 100%.
Will that be before or after the PS5 patch?
It really doesn't matter.🙄
Paid £45 for it.
Feel for those that have got crap broadband speed though, and want to play ASAP ✊
@Octane It won't be 115gb. Even if an update is 43gb it may only add 10gb of data to the game as majority of an update replaces old files with new files.
@Octane
That's fair. But it seems like people forget all too quickly what a great developer CDP is. I've chosen to have a little faith.
@hoffa007 Not sure on pre-loads, unfortunately. Don't think a specific time has been made official yet, but we should hear something soon.
.........because the launch day update is 143GB? They messed this is up so badly! I know I personally have so much less faith in this game than I did 6 months ago.
I'll definitely not be getting it on 10th, I'll wait and see how its received in the first week or so then make a decision.
@hoffa007 Ignore my last post, just saw a tweet from CDPR. Preload is live on PlayStation two days before launch, so on the 8th December.
@ShogunRok ah thats great thankyou for the reply and info bud.
@thedevilsjester the wording still makes sense to ne. It doesn't specify that its the ps5 version, only that there may or not be a patch for the game whether someone is playing on ps4 or ps5.
Cyberpunk went gold before they delayed it for another month, meaning that discs were already in production at that time. I bet this first patch is a bunch of the fixes they made.
@TheAdza the wording is redundant. A patch for the PS4 is also a patch for any PS5 playing a PS4 game in BC mode. There is no need to ever specify both unless there is some significance. I know it makes sense to you, but clearly, even though it's been stated dozens of times, many people are still confused about this, so adding to their confusion should be avoided if it can.
@Octane
And the nonsense that is Call of Duty every week.
@Jaz007
It’s getting the point that those of us with limited bandwidth or terribly slow dl speeds are going to get forced out of gaming.
It’s going to take me around 10 hours to download an update like that.
So your disc is a fancy coaster well i will wait then for the PS5 version preorder cancelled.
@andreoni79 I'm going too do the same thing I guess.
Fork it! I'm waiting for the proper PS5 version
@ShogunRok
"the game was delayed in order to add POLISH to the console versions"
I see what you did there
@TheRedComet They should be obliged to add a fancy neon sticker on the boxes with "Internet connection required to get the base version of this single player offline game" written on it.
Hold on.. So they delayed the game because it was too demanding for current gen consoles, right? But now they won't let us have a proper PS5 version any time soon, and instead we'll have to settle for a PS4 title playable on PS5?
Does this make any sense at all??
I think the biggest question here is, why were games certified gold and sent to production at point where they knew they weren't even close to done development on such a scale that they had to warehouse the discs just to buy time to get a patch out the door to make it even usable? Going gold used to mean "we're done maknig the game and it's ready to sell." Then going gold became "We're almost done the game, it's more or less working, will polish the rough edges between now and launch." Suddenly going told means "We'll probably get a running digital version by the time the license discs land at retail."
At this point the retail version should have just been a paper code in a box. That's all it really is anyway.
@andreoni79 This is actually a requirement; however they only have to do that if the game is not actually playable without the download.
If there is a version, even an extremely buggy, broken, incomplete version, that is playable from the disc then they are not required to.
@skxnkwxlkr Yeah, that seems to sum it up all right. I am Ok with that for now though because it means that the actual "on disc" game for the PS5 will be great without a day one patch.
