Well we all saw this one coming, didn't we? Cyberpunk 2077 is not a good game on PS4 at launch (as stated in our Cyberpunk 2077 PS4 review), plagued by all kinds of bugs and technical problems, to the point where you could argue that it's borderline broken on PS4 and PS4 Pro. It even has a serious crashing issue on PS5 via backwards compatibility, which the latest update — Cyberpunk 2077 patch 1.04 — apparently hasn't fixed.
As you'd expect, unhappy players are starting to voice their disappointment on Metacritic. At the time of writing, the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 has over 1300 user reviews, and it sits at a dismal, "overwhelming dislike" user score of 1.9. It's a bloodbath, and the negative ratings aren't showing any signs of stopping.
We sincerely hope that CD Projekt Red can improve the game soon, because this is only going to get uglier as more and more people sit down to play the open world RPG over the course of the weekend.

I’m not surprised. Given how clunky the Witcher 3’s gameplay was, I had a feeling CDPR was going to screw up with this one in some way. They put more focus into implementing features to make it a 90+ Metacritic game (their exact words) than testing it like crazy to make sure everything worked properly.
I don’t even jnow why they bothered with previous gen consoles. Hardware is just too weak for a game of this scope.
As much as the game is in a bad state, Metacritic user scores are still completely pointless until they implement verification processes.
Should have either delayed it again, to fix it. Or better yet, drop last gen. How they can say they worked as hard as they did and still release this poor effort is beyond me. Cdpr to take ubisofts glitch crown, I reckon so
@Cheems I think they revealed it too early. I hear it’s fine on next-gen systems.
@nessisonett metacritic user score never let me down. If score is 80+ the game is very good. If it’s bellow that it’s not very good. Same with steam user score.
I thought Metacritic implemented a minimum 3 day grace period on reviews?? How are users reviewing it before critics
It’s amazing how CDPR was fully able and willing to sacrifice the goodwill & trust they’ve built over the years for a RECORD BREAKING payday, seems downright Shakespearean in its tragedy. And oddly fitting given the Cyberpunk world of corruption and greed.
@Cheems It’s unbelievably easy to review bomb games on it. It means nothing.
Eh, I'm having a good time on PS5, especially after todays patch the game looks a little prettier too. The crashes are a little annoying, not enough for me to hate it.
This is a mess. There's no way in hell they will fix it within a few weeks/months on last gen consoles.
At this point, I might at it for $30 once the PS5 version drops.
@Akurusu yeah its alright ,doesnt look next gen though,graphics aren't crisp there's weird graphical glitchiness, blurriness ,shimmeringness,jaggieness and just altogether not goodness...ness
Not a big fan of user reviews on any site. The ones on metacritic you can't take seriously, it's mainly review bombing on there especially if it's all about hate. Users can feel disappointed or there's problems in the game but they are far from professional. A review that only consists of 'this game sucks a 0 out of 10' or 'worse game ever 0 out of 10' these need to be removed. We all know that the majority of the reviews are from those who have yet to own the game and are just jumping on the bandwagon. Mass effect andromeda had this reception. I got to play that game after all the patches and had no issues, so enjoyed the game. Cyberpunk may need work so it's easy to wait for these problems to be fixed. The gameplay and story telling still could be great
@nessisonett I think the best thing to do it is to let people connect their Playstation, Xbox, or even their steam account to Metacritic and if they don't have the game they shouldn't be allowed to review that game.
@Nepp67 If PSNProfiles can track your trophies, Metacritic can absolutely check which games you’ve played.
At least an official apology would be nice from them after I pre ordered this "game" from store and I cant get a refund. The game its in current state is unplayable. And Im on PS Pro. Zero AI, bugs everywhere, crashes, stick drift(????) etc etc. At this point I will wait for at least a couple of patches before check it again.
@Dubbicakes I’m in the same boat. I haven’t tried it since the new update, but minus a crash and a couple of wonky things, it’s running fairly smoothly. I just wish the graphics were closer to what they showed we’d get.
CyberPlunk down the drain
disappointing from one of the most beloved developments in the world. just cant release game in this state with this manny issues. 😓
@Odium What I instantly noticed was the textures were less blurry and bump mapping seemed to be enabled giving textures a little more texture. It'll be nice when the actual PS5 version comes out in a few months.
@Odium Vid on youtube of the opening chase scene comparrison shows it still running at 20fps and bugs galore and thats after the latest patch 1.04. They can't improve the graphics unfortunately on base consoles. If anything they will have no choice but to drop resolution even more to stabilise the framerate and attempt to fix the many bugs. They will fix it but it will take time.
This is dumb, cdp should delay this game to february or march, why the heck they're so hellbent to release this game at the end of this year? Do they want the launch money so much that they had no problem sacrificing their reputation? Capcom usually release their big games on february or march and it seems to work fine for them.
Everyone says they should have dropped ps4 and xb1, and that is just so far from the mark. They spent 8 years making this, FOR the ps4 gen, and the problem is if they try to exclude ps4, who are they going to sell the game to? The maybe 5% of gamers who have been able to get their hands on a ps5?
This HAD to come out on ps4, and they knew it, and yet somehow they were willing to sacrifice all the goodwill they had garnered from gamers in the past.
I am actually loving the game, loving the story, but lets face it, CDPR has some areas of game development that they really need to work on. A.I., lighting, driving, all are subpar. Plus, I keep clicking my right thumbstick hoping to go into 3rd person. And the menus are needlessly difficult to navagate. And the map is a mess. And when you're in your journal picking your active quest, you should have a 'show on map' button.
I could go on. What they do best in games is tell stories, and that's here for sure. They didn't need to push horsepower limits as far as they have, and they shouldn't have.
I wouldn't be happy either if I pay full price for a game that is barely playable.
Game certainly isn't all that pretty, and I don't doubt that people have run across a fair few bugs and glitches, but the game is far from unplayable. Borderline broken is a tad hyperbolic as well.
I'm not exactly defending it as the product we got certainly doesn't feel like the one that was advertised but much of the rhetoric around this game is fairly over the top.
Clearly CDPR knew of the issues but kept console gamers in the dark. This is closer to a scam than negligence. We should expect a refund.
We should all wait for the dedicated PS5 version. A real shame, but they should of canceled the console versions (pre-PS5) and focused on the PC version.
Of course that is a ludicrous statement I have made since they would be neglecting a gigantic user install base but, I feel the game would of been better for it.
@zupertramp
While I’m also pissed that I payed the same for the game on ps5 than I would have on pc, only to get a severely subpar version, all these comments about how unplayable the game is, are laughable. Just the usual black and white worldview of people, being either overhyped or completely crestfallen.
BUH ... BUH BUH ... BUH LAST GEN ISN'T HOLDING DOWN NEXT GEN, BUH BUH BUH!!!
@MemSec yeah, some people going as far as to call it the most disastrous launch of the generation. I very much doubt that, it's buggy and has a rough frame, but the game itself seems pretty good. I can think of some other releases that I'd easily put down as being in a worse state at launch.
@wiiware It's their fault for announcing it too early but had they delayed one last time all hype and care for the game would've gone out the window. There are a couple of things they could've done to prevent such major backlash by delaying at least the console versions(or maybe even cancelling the last gen version entirely) or just tell the community that the console versions will not run well and will need a lot of patches.
@Orpheus79V
It’s definitely a shame that the game will be marred from the terrible launch, and though I’m sure most issues will be fixed, CDPR can’t really blame anyone but themselves.
I'm genuinely enjoying the game to be honest, hasn't crashed once for me and it's looks 10x better when you turn off the motion blurr and other effects they put in to make it look like blade runner.
@Nepp67 Blizzard of old and rockstar delay their games all the time, and I really believe that if the game is good, it will sells and people will forget about the delays. Also I think this game is just too big to fail, delays or not.
Good. I was afraid they were getting a free pass. TW3 was a mess at launch. Thronebreaker was an absolute disaster at launch. There was hope they learned their lesson, but apparently not. They better not become the new Bethesda.
For me this just shows how amazing Ghosts of Tshushima and TLou2 are from a technical standpoint. They show how to squeeze the best out ps4. As for cyberpunk, well im simply gutted at this hot mess. Was so looking forward to it.
@LordSteev
The we spent 8 years making Cyberpunk 2077 for current generation console's is ***** statement, they spent 8years making Cyberpunk 2077 for PC's hence why it looks next generation on a high end PC and takes full advantage of high end PC's.
@banacheck
I'm sorry, but that is just a tired statement. Compared to the Ocean of gamers who own a ps4 or xbox1, the number of people who own a high end PC that can run this with all the bells and whistles wouldn't fill a bathtub.
When you spend 8 years with a staff of hundreds to pay for making a game, you need someone, or MANY someones, to buy what you've created. CDPR always stated publicly they were targeting ps4 and it would run great.
You don't make a game that has a budget this high with high end elite PC Gamers in mind as your sole buyers.
@NeverRedNever
They are made almost perfect because its under the direct eye of sony in development and sony throws money at them. Knowing the return is ten fold
But unfortunately CDPR have destroyed there rep currently how can it be this bad after 8 years ??
But also gotta think they are optimising for what 7 ? Platforms
An to be honest im tired of hearing how bad it runs on first ps4 jeez who cares its like 6 or 7 years old of course it can't handle a game of this scope🙃
@Nepp67 tbh I don't think cancelling ps4 xbox1x versions could ever have happened. I expect the vast majority of their 8 million pre-orders are for ps4 or xbox. Cancelling them would have been a bigger bloodbath than this I think.
@nessisonett does this count as review bombing if people are scoring the game poorly because it's an unplayable buggy mess? Not saying there aren't tryhards piling on with low scores who haven't played it, but I would honestly score a game that ran at 20fps and crashed all the time about a 2/10 so the user score seems not miles off, this isn't a TLOU2 situation
I think this whole situation highlights why people were disappointed that Horizon Forbidden West is a cross gen game. CP2077 is clearly a dense and ambitious game designed for new gen that the base PS4 cannot handle. People hoped that HFW would be similar and do things that just would not work on PS4 at all (cross the whole map on a flying pterodactyl machine in a few seconds in real time, fights with dozens of machines on screen at once) but it likely will just be a 60fps/ray traced version of a game limited in scope to still run perfectly on 2013 (at point of release 8 year old) hardware. Clearly here CDPR have not limited their ambitions to make it run on PS4 - their artistic vision is uncompromised but it just does not run on base PS4. This is why people are keen on next gen exclusives rather than cross gen games
@wiiware They delayed it three times and this is ESPECIALLY after the fact that they had announced that it went gold and even when they confirmed that there would be no more delays. A 4th delay would possibly ruin them. This is one of the reasons why developers need to stop announcing their games so early. It happened with The Last Guardian, FF15, Cyberpunk and now even Elden Ring.
@Iroha That's a good point honestly but imo it would've been for the best. It would've even gained them a good reputation. If Techland can do it with Dying Light then so can CDPR.
I'm currently on ps5 and it's still rough looking! I normally don't agree with review bombing but CDPR lied to us and hid true gameplay of the console version! They even made a fake video with Holly that said console but there's no way it was! A 2/10 is spot on its a joke
Wait, didn't we agree that user scores on metacritic are trash and should be ignored? I guess it does make for a juicy story, though.
@Akurusu runs fine on the xbox series s. only had 2 glitches in 8 hours and one was looking in mirror i was bald and one cut scenes my voice changed to the woman. but runs fine
@MemSec You are playing in PS5, I don’t think you realise how bad it looks and plays on PS4. It needed more time in the oven as they could have done a LOT more to optimise the game. It looks like a PS3 game but with tons of glitches.
@Uromastryx Doom Eternal launched on Switch. If that can run well in Switch, this game can run well in PS4. Yes, it won’t look as good as PC or PS5, but it shouldn’t look as bad as this game currently does.
@LordSteev
It was made first and foremost to take advantage of high end PC's, we know this because the base PS4 is massively scaled back in order to be able to run it and even then it still cannot run it close to 30fps 1080p. If the idea that it was targeting PS4/XboxOne from the get go is they would be scaling up not down, obviously they want to make money on the game but again this game was never targeting base PS4/XboxOne from the get go. Otherwise the gap between the game on based PS4 & PC wouldn't be so big hence CDPR has fully embraced the latest PC technology in order for a true leap in fidelity it's more or less a modern day Crysis and your telling me they where targeting based (2013) base PS4?
@Kienda
Well, I didn’t say it looked good, but looking like a ps3 game doesn’t equal being unplayable.
@Nepp67 Yup, cdp should not give the exact date, just says "when it's done between december - march". Then the game will be well received by reviewers and gamers like red dead redemption 2.
@MemSec no, the frame rates and the fact it’s hard to make out what is going on does that.
It’s really a bad port.
@banacheck
Believe what you want to, I can't stop you. But the fact is, they WERE targeting ps4 from day one. Why do I say this? Because CDPR has repeated it publicly, over and over, at game shows and in interviews, for the last 7 years.
I see nothing in the game world that looks so architecturally advanced that the ps4 couldn't handle it, frankly. I suspect that what you are attributing to bleeding edge technology is in fact poor and unfinished optimization of code.
Little telltale signs are there, like how long it takes to load in assets like street lights, or npc's. Or how switching from first to third person while driving hitches and takes a few seconds.
If they didn't botch the original code too badly, I think with enough hard work and patching, they can release this so it DOES look like it was intended for ps4. In other words, they didn't finish the game before they let it out in public.
@Cheems what scope? There are tons of open world games way more ambitious and better than this one. Even Deus Ex is better than it. There is seriously nothing in this game that makes it as good as they promised
Cyberflop glad i canceled my pre-order when i did. I'll wait for the Cyberpunk complete edition with all the DLC for $30 like the witcher 3
Never liked CD Projekt Red from the very beginning and never will. Their games have always been trash at launch and nothing has changed. Can't believe till today, gamers don't see how bad they are at programing.
Cyberpunk 2077 had 1000+ 5 star reviews on PS4 before launch. Trust the general public, eh?
While they are a reasonable barometer, equally some things like TLOU2/The Last Jedi clearly show some kind of deranged campaign. This has the feel of being the latest thing to savage beyond objectivity to join in with the "Lols" or lose touch with reality over.
I struggle to take anybody seriously that would use "Cuckmann", "Woke" and "SJW" in any kind of pile on esque review.
Cyberpunk looks like a game that collapsed under the weight of developer ambition to exceed fan expectations.
I think it's the way the industry has been going with AAA to be honest, and this is another big scalp.
Even so, this is not a 1/10 game. It's clearly not a 10/10 game at the moment, so I'd rather trust a respected critic primarily (Push Square for games, Mark Kermode for films for me) as a guide, then make my own mind up.
Personally I can see this as a 3-7 at the moment, depending on how charitable you are to what's underneath the glaring technical issues and how much faith you have they are salvageable.
Maybe the 1/10 snowball stuff will keep the pressure on to resolve things, or at least ask "what happened?" at a press level like Sim City or Colonial Marines.
Sadly if you pre-order a game these days ( disclosure : I did with this) , don't get angry at the devs. Please just realise we're paying a premium to be beta testers and you either get lucky like Spider-Man or Tsushima, or you get burned like this so please just accept the gamble or stop.
Can you imagine that this CDPR CEO declared they were delaying because they wanted the best scores and won’t accept anything under 9.5 (or some number above 9). I really don’t see why this dude declared this while he could have see this coming. This man is totally uncapable. I feel sorry for the people who worked on this game. And what about Keanu Reeves. I wonder if he would happy being in a film where they forgot to remove all the blue screens or something. This whole situation is just unbelievable.
@RPE83
I'd give it a 5/10 currently, when it works its great, the main story quests are good fun lots of fun characters. Some side stuff can be really funny,
But I agree it collapsed under pressure..makes you wonder do game testers exist anymore if so CDPR's should be fired immediately
And also it always comes to the suits telling them to get it now,"fix it live were losing money" ultimately crushing CDPR reputation,
So many falling victim to it like some of the biggest EA, Visceral, and the mighty Blizzard/Activision look at the crap they spew out year after year but people eat it up because "it will be better in the future"
@nessisonett This game is a mess on consoles i can understand this game should have never been released in this state.
@Max2574 I’m looking forward to the PS5 upgrade. The game doesn’t look bad by means, it’s just not as good as they showed. Even with the bump from my PS5. Luckily, I haven’t ran into too many issues, unlike most people, so I’ll take that over great graphics any day.
@Dubbicakes I’m looking forward to seeing how it looks/runs for me with the update. I can deal with most of the minor things I dealt with. Hopefully it fixed the crash issue I experienced. I can deal with disappointing graphics and some minor hiccups here and there, but crashes are just frustrating.
@Uromastryx
I'm a software developer. It's not the QA team, or even the developers, I can believe on some level that a lot of them are probably more upset than the players.
I can pretty much guarantee you from experience it's a corporate/commercially led decision to release the game in this state.
Even if there wasn't glaring technical stuff, the problem with these 100 hour open world games is that QA is a thankless task. How much can one person play a game and try all kind of combinations that someone may try, on all difficulties/slider adjustments?
We should have seen this coming. All the signs were there: multiple delays, mandatory crunch, pre-launch patches. I hope they can still turn it around but I'm not holding my breath for the last gen versions.
@Kienda
You’re right, it’s a bad port, with very poor visuals and performance, an utter shame.
All I’m saying is that calling it “unplayable” is still hyperbole. We’re not disagreeing on the first part though. 🤷♂️
Wow. I bought the game, and I play on a ps4 bought in 2017. Never cleaned. Yeah, got some bugs here and there. Yes, I did have some crashes, about 4. Really bothers me. I do think they shouldn't release it in this state. The scale of the game deservesa proper polish. But the game is amazing. I took a break for a bit to eat and socialize. I'm very happy so far.
Fdrom what people say that the gameplay / npcs not being what they expected: Red Dead 2 was expected to bring a whole new dimension to the average NPC, it just gave us 3 lines per NPC. Still an amazing game, but not really what it was sold to be.
I'm not worried, honestly. I know CDPR will eventually come around the issues. I would be pissed and worried if it were another dev. Probably wouldn't have bought the game straight away, like I usually do. Plus, when I get a PS5, I will already have this game to play there.
No bug makes Cyberpunk a "0" just like no "story issues" made TLOU2 a "0"
Stop caring about user reviews on Metacritic ages ago. I feel so have most publishers at this point. Just an echo chamber.
@nessisonett you’re right but I think in this instance they’re justified no?
Plenty of reviewers gave it a 100 though.
This very site has been very vocal in condemning “review bombing” by users.
Silence on the dishing out of 100s to this game though.
I will give them credit for not giving a score and sitting on the fence.
I’d rather they told people not to buy it though. Not in its current state
I'm playing it on a mcc xbo. My experience with it so far has been positive, albeit with some caveats. Visually, it reminds me of the switcher III. I know there is a graphically superior version out there, but I dont mind mine. It slows down, but it's not stop animation or "strobe light effect". The driving, in Vs car, is reminiscent of gta iv. I cant say my experience is the standard, but I'm enjoying my jaunt through night city.
Trying to play cool and act consumer-friendly in the last few years. But they do know it runs crap on last-gen yet they still release it after restricting reviews on last gen. And then celebrate 8 million pre-order. So much for being consumer-friendly. Those who said should not release on last gen, how much proportion of that 8 millions are on last gen? A Lot!!
One of CDPRs worst issues here is saying it will be great on Xbox One and PS4 when its clearly not in a fit state to be sold to customers.
Add to that they blocked all reviews,footage and info about those two versions.
As it stands we have a good version on Series X and PS5 based on back compatibility. PS5 takes the Pro version and unlocks the frame rate to 60 and SX takes the One X and does similar.
Base consoles have been hit hard and I would be pissed too. Its shady and feels like a rip off. SX and PS5 fair alot better but we already knew that the true PS5 and SX editions are due in 2021...Top Spec PC gamers get the best version but I believe a true SX and PS5 version will be very close when released next year..
Not surprised though. Witcher 3 was a ***** show at launch on base consoles and Getalts movement is still the worst in modern times...
I have sympathy with base console owners as you have been mislead...and its frustrating and should be illegal. In any other business this would be a big like fraud.
Rather think a forgotten point in all this is how AAA devs/publishers tend to get treated differently by Sony/XB at certification period. If it was like this at release, imagine what state it was like prior when it was submitted to the console stores? It seems like so long as there's the promise of "it'll be patched later",just like shambles like Fallout 76, they'll get rubber stamped for release no matter what state they're in.
@Kienda Digital Foundry did the PlayStation 4/Pro/5 analysis and found that CP2077 on PS5 has the exact same resolution and graphical quality as the PS4 Pro, the only difference is framerate of 20-30 on Pro and 50-60 on PS5.
@Akurusu fine is an overstatement, with 1.04 and all the graphics options off it doesn't look like a PS3 game anymore but, it's not great. The game I am actually enjoying now but, roll on the PS5 patch. It crashes on a regular basis too.
@RPE83 Uhm,last Jedi was genuinely bad,it deserves all the hate it gets,it sends a message to big movie corps like disney,that they can not just put out a series of movies,without planning it out,and just expecting people to blindly consume their content just because of the the brand name.
As Gordon Ramsey would say:
"You can send it out that that, you are going to kill people! think people think, take your time and get it right... JES_S"
@rachetmarvel
If the 3 part arc was unplanned, I would have thought the more logical target for complaint would have been Kathleen Kennedy, not the director and an actress from middle film? I don't understand why the same people who hated The Last Jedi didn't hate the other two based on that logic?
@RPE83 Nah the other two movies in this arc,were hated,force awaken less so,because it had the benefit of the doubt in being a potential start of a great new saga,and the shock factor also helped keep it memorable, but the two movies after that were just horrible,no question asked.
Do not worry,the fanbase despise Kathleen Kennedy,and I believe the developers do deserve some blame for certain artistic choices cough*Reylo*cough,but you are right,they do not deserve full on hate,they are like 40 to 30 percent at fault here.
Also the only actors I see getting full on hate,are Daisy Ridley and Kelly Tran,both whom are Rey and Rose's actresses.I guess this is a duality for actors/actresses, in which people believe,that if you can praise and glorify an actor /actress for playing a certain character,you can also by pseudo right,condemn and vilify them for playing a certain character.
@rachetmarvel
I think The Last Jedi is the best of the recent bunch, with Rise of Skywalker challenging Attack of The Clones for worst overall.
The Sequels, for me, suffer from the opposite problem to the prequels.
The prequels had a great idea and a story, but the execution of script, cinematography and direction was poor. The sequels have fine acting, cinematography and direction, but literally no plot, idea or story to tell.
Alan Moore I believe said "create art and let it find it's audience, don't write for the audience" because then you'll have a bad story, and you can't please everyone.
So I think art should divide people, and inspire strong reactions either way. Happy for people to dislike anything and express that to me as long as they give decent reasoning for doing so, not foamy mouthed hatred.
This is at least the reasoning for me loving The Last Jedi, but disliking Rise of Skywalker, it's just so middle of the road trying to get the "fans" back on board it tries so desperately to be everything and yet does nothing interesting at all.
I have been enjoying The Mandalorian, and Disney gave us the Clone Wars Final Series and Rebels, so I hope you got something out of those!
Never gave a crap what Metacritic has to say about any game. Oooh a new game has glitches. Welcome to 2020, children. Vampire : Bloodlines was a hot mess when it came out. It's down in history as one of the finest RPGs ever made.
I thought this was going to be my game of the year (2021) and even maybe the decade. It's not even my game of the month.
@nessisonett completely agree with your point about verification.
I would also like a feature that tracks the amount of time a user has spent in the game so we don’t get these idiots ‘reviewing’ a game 1 hours after it releases.
As it stands the site is a waste of time.
This is why pre-ordering isn’t a good idea.
@InsertGoodName
I certainly agree with you that MC is a waste of time.
But to be fair the game is clearly pretty broken and that’s a more valid point than the content of most metacritic ‘reviews’, which usually amount to:
Or a ‘review’ posted 1 hour after release. Once the gaming community stamps out these cretins the better.
@Arnna Still, after all the hype not to mention the alleged extreme shifts put in, there is no way in hell this game won't end up fixed and going down the same warm way as Vampire: Bloodlines - or indeed even the Witcher games which had similar problems.
Trouble is entitled folk these days want everything fixed NOW NOW NOW. It's like Cyberpunk is the only thing going on in their lives.
Yes it should have been released finished - but name me one single game that's released finished these days. I own PC games that have never had, or needed, 1 SINGLE patch released for them. But the 90's are over.
@InsertGoodName I totally agree that the level of entitlement within the gaming community is absurd. We saw this every time Cyberpunk got delayed. People threatening boycotts, making all kinds of speculative claims about the inner workings of CDPR. Really weak behaviour.
@InsertGoodName also I’ll add that getting updates can be a really positive thing too. I’m playing Nioh 2 atm and the developers have added many quality of life updates, minor bug fixes and new features over the months.
I wonder what they did with all that development time, given the game's current state.
