PlayStation boss Jim Ryan is British, but he’s spent more than two decades rising through the ranks at a Japanese company, and that means he’s picked up a bit of the lingo along the way. In this video from the recent PlayStation Partner Awards, the executive addresses the audience in Japanese – from the safety of what appears to be his own home, of course. Judging by the greetings cards in the background, it looks like the Ryan family recently celebrated a birthday. Many happy returns!

As for the PlayStation Partner awards themselves, which primarily recognise sales rather than critical achievements, Final Fantasy VII Remake, eFootball PES 2020, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot took home the biggest gongs, for “highest worldwide sales between October 2019 and September 2020”. Meanwhile, Black Desert, Final Fantasy XIV, Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2, Nioh 2, Persona 5 Royal, Resident Evil 3, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon took home Partner Awards.

Elsewhere, Apex Legends was recognised for its performance in Japan having been developed outside of the country, while Death Stranding received acclaim for the reverse. You can find a full breakdown of the event, including an archive of the entire livestream and Ryan’s speech, over on the PlayStation Blog.
