In what might be one of the most left-field teases we've come across in quite some time, Wolfenstein developer Machine Games is making an Indiana Jones game. The publisher's official Twitter account has just put out a short, 33-second clip featuring the classic theme song as well as a whip. Following up on that tweet is a quick statement, reading: "A new Indiana Jones game with an original story is in development from our studio, @MachineGames, and will be executive produced by Todd Howard, in collaboration with @LucasfilmGames. It'll be some time before we have more to reveal, but we’re very excited to share today’s news!"
"The game will tell a wholly original, standalone tale set at the height of the career of the famed adventurer."
It sounds like the game is very early in development, similar to what we saw with IO Interactive's Project 007. Both Bethesda and Machine Games simply wanted to reveal the news and accompanying excitement as soon as possible. Now, the question for PlayStation 5 owners becomes one of whether they'll be able to play it on their new console or not. This Indiana Jones experience appears to be at least a few years away from launch, and we know that Microsoft's acquisition of the publisher will be finalised at some point this year. Therefore, your guess is as good as ours right now.
Do you think this Indiana Jones game will launch on PS5? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

GamePass only I bet.
Is Todd Howard now becoming a Hideo Kojima-like figure, where they just attach his name to every project?
It'll definitely be a multiplat (Xbox and PC) but would not surprise me if it went to PS5 after a year. But at the same time, I actually don't believe Microsoft would have the guts to keep it off PS5.
70% chance PC/Xbox/PS5 same day
30% chance PC/Xbox then PS5 down the line
Imo
@get2sammyb One would hope not... it isn't really a seal of quality.
I suspect exclusive. Unless keeping it multi-plat was part of the licensing deal and Disney have no issue with content being platform exclusive.
@deathaxe Then why have a Microsoft studio make this game?
@deathaxe tell that to spider-man ps4, spider-man miles morales, disney tsum tsum and marvel ultimate alliance 3. Disney hasn’t been a stranger to exclusive games the past 2 years and besides tsum tsum the other 3 games sold well enough to stay exclusive.
@deathaxe Except Spiderman PS4 and Miles Morales - Sony don't own the game rights to the character, they are still licensed by Disney.
Think people need to accept Microsoft bought Bethesda for a shed load of money to drive gamepass subscriptions. Nae danger this is coming to ps5.
this game has nothing to do with microsoft
Multi-plat with the Xbox version to be better optimised
@Amppari It does when they own the publisher.
Oh wow. Indiana Jones has a lot of potential. It could end up being an excellent game, or it could be underwhelming.
It won't come out for probably another 3 years or so more than likely just be on Xbox and PC. Gets tedious every single game will it won't it be on PS5. Wat is the point in Xbox buying a developer if its not going to be exclusive. Personally I have both consoles so couldn't care. Only people who truly care are die hard fanboys. Most if not all true gamers have both and let's face it in 3 years time Xbox and Playstation Apps will be on our TVS so purchasing a console gets less more important as every day passes. With Covid and American Terrorism who knows where we will be in 3 years time.
@deathaxe 'GamePass is not sustainable into the longer term' Microsoft 100% disagrees with this.
Remember xcloud is part of GamePass Ultimate now. Potential billions of subscribers: Android, iPhone, SmartTvs, PC, Xbox, etc.
@get2sammyb They dont
@get2sammyb 16x times the details
@Jarobusa I 100% believe the people that play big console games on their phone is console gamers. So no, I don't think there's billions potential of subscribers. People that only played phone games won't suddenly play assassin creed valhalla on their phone with touch controls.
@Amppari They will in a few weeks, though.
@Max2574 that's not true though. Maybe on this site but in the real world? I think people have a preferred platform and stick to it.
Also, I only have a PS4 but I'm not a real gamer? Please!
As for this game, makes me sad that it won't be coming to PS but it's several years away and I have yet to get a PS5 anyway.
Whether to port the new Indy game to PS5 is being examined by Top Men. TOP. MEN.
I am a happy PS customer since the original, and I always will be. I would prefer if all Bethesda titles were still available on PS5, but if I have to buy an XBox to play this and Starfield on a console, I will.
@Jarobusa For the amount of investment and money that would go into making quality games its not sustainable. They would need 100 million plus subscribers every month. Unless they go down the AA route as they have done so far to cut costs. X cloud so far has bombed so far. The future will definitely be gamepass app on every TV so maybe then the fanboy wars will stop.
@Col_McCafferty But you will have access to an app in 3 years time. If you can pay a tenner play all there games in a month then be on your way. You telling me you wouldn't do that??
@Jarobusa To be fair, there's a chasm between potential and reality. Microsoft will have very smart people doing the sums behind-the-scenes so I'm sure they know what they're doing, but there's definitely still a discussion to be had about the model's overall feasibility long-term.
The reality is that, without access to internal information, we may just have to wait and see what happens.
@Jarobusa
$7.5 billion is a lot to try to recoup just via Gamepass, especially when there's a huge market from the PS5 who would probably buy this up.
You could say it'll be a Xbox system seller, but this new Indy game will probably be in the oven for another 2 years or so before release, at which point I would expect most customers who would pick one console over the other would have made their choice by then.
You may well be right, it might just come to Gamepass, but I would expect all the Bethesda tentpole releases to come to PS5, perhaps on a Gamepass timed exclusivity, but not wholly exclusive.
@get2sammyb I also wonder if it's like The Outer Worlds or Deathloop or Ghostwire. These contracrs are all inked BEFORE the acquisition is complete so are honoured separately already.
Also, I may be misremembering but isn't the MS/Bethesda deal the 2nd half of 2021? I can't remember for sure.
Edit: Yeah directly from Microsoft's press announcement. Microsoft fiscal year ends September 30th 2021
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and completion of regulatory review. Microsoft expects the acquisition to close in the second half of fiscal year 2021 and to have minimal impact to non-GAAP operating income in fiscal years 2021 and 2022. Non-GAAP excludes the expected impact of purchase accounting adjustments, as well as integration and transaction-related expenses.
@Futureshark 7.5 billion is just the tip of the iceberg as well. You will have massive staffing costs, game development and tools, online infrastructure costs, ip licences. Looking around the 15 to 20 billion mark. We all know Microsoft are a trillion dollar company but they still don't like losing money.
@get2sammyb I agree the future is unknown, but for people to dismiss GamePass saying it wont be sustainable is questionable.
Doubt we'll get it. It will be a counter to the uncharted series i expect, which in itself is built off indy/tomb raider.
The sooner the aquisition is complete and Microsoft and Bethesda stop playing games over whether titles will come to other platforms (other than pc) the better. Microsoft (quite rightly) can't say anything till aquisition is complete, and Bethesda will be beholden to whatever Microsoft wants as the owner, unless something was written into the purchase agreement.
@Max2574 How can you make money on pennies of income. Artist that are not famous on musicstreaming platform have a hard time too. And i dont like that one company whoever it is that makes all the profit while others have too scrape by.
@Max2574 That one MS Dude literally said that Bethesda Games will either be "first or better" on Xbox, not "Only"
https://www.pcinvasion.com/bethesda-games-xbox/amp/
Stadia exclusive, but only for those with Starlink internet Access.
So sad that an iconic IP is likely reduced to a loss leader for a subscription service. Still bring on the port begging, MS have only themselves to blame.
Expecting this to come to PS5 is like expecting Spider-Man 2 to go to Xbox.
Good news for those that dislike xbox consoles, is that anything done by MS will also run on Windows PCs, via GamePass or for sale on Steam.
@Jarobusa i think game pass is sustainable as a model, but i think the quality of games will drop. I dont see a future for 10-20 hour single player experiences. Microsoft need service titles and experiences that hook players in for long periods of time to drive continued subscriptions
@IonMagus What is the use too buy Bethesda games if they are gimped? But that is my personal opinion.
Chances are the deal to licence the game with Disney was done before the Microsoft acquisition, making it largely out of their hands to change platforms now.
It's weird how they've attached Todd Howard's name to this. You'd think they'd be doing their best to avoid any association.
Indiana Jones is great, but after the Wolfenstein II Machine Games would honestly have some convincing to do. I guess we'll see.
I hope it is exclusive to xbox
Competition is good
It is the time for Sony to move their ass
And acquire some studios for more exclusive content.
@Jarobusa I don't think there are games that "only" come to Game Pass. All games can still be bought. No doubt this game will be a Day 1 release on Game Pass since Microsoft will soon own Bethesda, but people will still have the option to pay to own the game.
Now one could argue that is is a "digital-only" release, but I somehow doubt that.
I really hope this game turns out well. I loved Indiana Jones games from the LucasArts days.
This will be an ‘indi’ game for sure....
Why can’t some people accept that Bethesda is no longer third party and now it’s own by Microsoft
I would prefer to play it on PS5 (eventhough I'll likely have an Xbox Series X by the time the game is out) but from a business perspective, if MS is trying to sell consoles it'd be smarter to keep it Xbox and PC. It's pretty simple when it comes to future Bethesda games. You can get over the fact MS bought the company and buy an Xbox or build a gaming PC or you can continue to fly the fanboy flag, scream about MS keeping games off PlayStation while cheerleading every time Sony signs a deal with a third party.
Really looking forward to this, can’t be arsed with the bickering. It’s literally the same position Spider-Man fans are in who own an Xbox.
This is something that if it didn't come to PlayStation would make me consider getting an Xbox as well.
@nessisonett yea but you know how it is around here, only PS is allowed to have desirable exclusives. 🤷♂️
I would love to be excited for this since I adore the original trilogy. But.....Bethesda..... And no gameplay is irritating. I'm too old to be excited for these kind of announcements anymore.
Also, I'm not a fan of MachineGames. And I'm worried this is going to lean way more into the sanitized, ridiculous Kingdom of the Crystal Skull action rather than the dirty, bloody action of the original trilogy.
@deathaxe The whole Spider-Man thing is weird, given Nintendo was allowed to use Spider-Man all willy-nilly, and the Fox stuff, in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.
Yet Square Enix has to have Spider-Man be exclusive to PS4 in Avengers?
There seems to be a lot of clauses and wiggle room with this.
@nessisonett @Tharsman Like I pointed out yesterday, things like this are the reason "PLAYSTATION EXCLUSIVE" memes exist
The ZeniMax acquisition isn't even gonna be finalised for another 6/10 months and I'm already tired of this discourse.
It's always the same: if PS gets exclusives, it's a big celebration in the community, while if MS gets them, there's gonna be all kinds of mental hoops to convince oneself they have to put those games on PS5.
At least the editors of this site are not the flame-fanning fanboys you usually find on fansites, and instead actively try to impart some logic 🙌🏻👏🏻
@Max2574 Nope!
Does it matter? Everyone knows ps5 is kicking Xboxes ass in terms of frame rate and resolution in all multiplats now the question should be will PS5 owners buy a lesser game than what Xbox will have? Me I’ll wait for reviews to find out.. it’ll definitely come out on PS5 as Microsoft will make ***** all off it on gamepass.. but with Phil coming out and saying the better versions will be on Xbox.. and it’s maybe a good thing if it comes out on Xbox first just to see if it’s a cyberpunk fiasco
Gamepass for PC sucks after MS delayed EA Play and increase the subscription price. I would not expect the Indiana Jones game to be available on PS5 and Playstation fans should not feel entitled to it.
@BrainHacker I dunno mate, Game Pass PC means I’m playing Dragon Quest XI S which I can get an easy 80 hours out of. It also has a whole bunch of Paradox grand strategy games. I mean, what are we really missing from EA Play outside the old BioWare games?
I'm intrigued. Just intrigued.
@nessisonett Game Pass is great on Xbox SX but there is a lot of missing games on the PC version. IMO, EA play would have justified the price hike but I'm enjoying GP right now with Doom Eternal lol
movie titles turned games n vice-versa....ehhhh big skipper.
With Todd Howard's name attached, it can only be half as good as it could've been.
@Grimwood yup and tomb raiders
@Grimwood
Think wolfenstein, doom and dishonored would like a word, just because you think they are awful doesn't mean many others too.
It's funny you get bet all these people getting their pantys in a twist would be saying the complete opposite it things had been the other way round, got too love the double standards of gamers
But this just seems another click bait article
I'd say most definitely for one simple reason,it has ties to Disney and Disney love love love money
hopefully it will be just as great as Crystal Skull 🤨
@Rudy_Manchego I think the reason spiderman ps4 is exclusive is because they let disney use spider-man in the movies. Honestly they should make a trade. Sony has gaming rights and other devs pay sony to use them in games and Disney does whatever with spider-man in the mcu
I suspect in 2-3 years when the game is ready for another announcement we can have this conversation
@BrainHacker I cancelled GamePass after seeing their paltry PC offerings and felt betrayed because nobody talks about gamepass on pc when they discuss it’s “amazing library”
It's a beloved franchise but to the 18-24 crowd (or somewhere there abouts) I'm not sure it's a console seller. So I'm calling an across the board multiplat. Well, maybe not Nintendo but I won't rule it out.
@deathaxe Give it time. I think gamepass caps at 30m
@Col_McCafferty I only have a ps4, but I bet I play more than most people that have all 4 platforms.
@Royalblues Amazon has 2 crap games and that little horror indie game google is making attract nobody. I think tencent has a better chance at competing (they earn more money than all 3 console makers) than amazon and google.
@2cents I don't think the current gamepass library offerings is good either. It's decent. Has mhw, niero automata, resident evil 7, doom eternal and a bunch of gears and halo... and a bunch of indies. I played most of that list so it doesn't grab my attention. It's a play all of our exclusives service. So people won't pay for it until those games start hitting.
@2cents The library of Gamepass PC is great for $4.99 but after the price hike without EA Play. It's mostly a bunch of games that I've played before. I'll probably cancel my subscription next month.
@JapaneseSonic well we already have an app for our phones also gamepass app coming to TVS soon. It won't even take 3 years tbh talks already ongoing.
@Jarobusa we still have to see that potential..
Anyone else really like Indiana Jones and the Emperors Tomb?
Bit of an underrated gem imo.
i thought it was zenimax that MS were in the process of acquiring, but bethesda would maintain some independence over its own publishing business? sure they'll go on a MS subscription service on day 1, but wouldn't rule out bethesda publishing it PS5 too, even if its half-ass supported. from a personal opinion, machine games doesn't have much of a track record, other than a couple of painfully average wolfenstein games.
lol watch this be MS attempt at getting a uncharted like game of their own.
@Jarobusa This game was clearly in development before the Microsoft acquisition
Sounds super dodgy. Todd Howard is not exactly a seal of quality either
@jdv95 that would be a bummer. Want something that isn't the equivalent of what sony is doing. Avowed for example.
No one talking about how it could play? I love the classics adventures like Indy Jones and the fate of Atlantis... Really it's not going to happen to have a game like that in this age... But I think maybe something like Uncharted 4 with some puzzles (like the old ones)...
@get2sammyb This really made me smile. 😂😂😂
I'll play it on Stadia if it doesn't come out on PS5. I'm really blown away by Stadia lately. ESO plays flawlessly on my Samsung Chromebook I bought for $200 on eBay. Amazing.
Indiana Jones made by Bethesda, interesting.
So is this going to have a first-person perspective? And will it have RPG elements?
Those are the initial questions that come to mind.
I'll sleep fine without Indiana Jones, thanks
Indy belongs on all systems. Come on.
Read the headline "Indiana Jones game" (I grew up with Indiana Jones) and was overexcited when I open this article. Than I saw Bethesda and all my joy and hopes for a good game, like the LucasArts Games Last crusade and Atlantis, went rock bottom. I'll probably will still buy it if it comes to PS5 but only when it's on sale.
@deathaxe "GamePass is not sustainable into the longer term"
Yeah what does a trillion+ dollar company know, we should all listen to fast food employees like yourself LMAO get real
@jorel262 Like Spider-man right?
@ISpeakTheTruth101 Because they’ve never lost money or gone out of business. Big companies make bad decisions all the time.
I feel like the Dualsense will be perfect for Indiana Jones. If it doesn’t come to PS5 it’ll be a shame with the missed potential, even if I can play it on my PC.
@Jaz007 Yes but the point is that when internet nobodies give business advice its hilarious because they have no idea what they're talking about
@leucocyte Wolfenstein New Colossus has an 87/100 Metacritic average, they're a lot more talented than Sucker Punch and Bend Studios are and if you REALLY want to see painfully average games look no further than Killzone. Even Sony threw that IP in the dumpster
If it's not exclusive to Xbox, then Microsoft doesn't really understand the point of buying developers. Something like Elder Scrolls 6, ok, especially since it's been in development well before the acquisition, but anything new should be exclusive to Xbox (and PC obviously). They bought several very good developers, so give people a reason to switch to Xbox.
@ISpeakTheTruth101 In all fairness, Killzone 2 and 3 were both very good games. The bookends were mediocre, but it's a series that should have been given another chance. Sony has no exclusive FPS games that come to mind, but they sure have a ton of third person action adventure games (yes, I know a lot of them are great and I have loved a lot of them).
@KilloWertz Thing is - this is technically announced before MS bought Bethesda (which technically didn't happen yet). I'm not saying it won't be MS exclusive but there's still a non-zero chance it won't be.
We haven't had a good Indiana Jones game since Emperors Tomb. I'm interested
Exclusive or not, I’m not convinced Machine Games is the right fit for this franchise. I’m very curious to see the fruits of these labours.
I'm sensing large quantities of hatred for Todd Howard and Bethesda. You guys must be young. These are the people responsible for Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 2-4. While I have had no interest in their experiments with MMORPG's, trying to argue that the above mentioned games are anything less than world class just makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about.
I very much doubt a Bethesda studio first exclusive Xbox game announcement would be small Twitter post and not at an Xbox/Major event.
This feels like an announcement that needed to be done before Xbox take over because this is project already in works for cross platform. I would expect it day one on gamepass though unless there is pushback from Disney about that as wasn’t in original deal etc
Could be complete wrong but we will find out
@Amppari They own Bethesda so yeah it kinda does.
I think people need to accept the reality of Bethesda being Microsoft 1st Party now and move on.
They didn't buy them to keep them a third party studio, they did it to draw people to Xbox.
Mark my words, ES6 will be Xbox and PC only.
I want this to be a modern game separate from any of the movies, it should have it's own original story.
Also needs to have modern gameplay elements that other series have, like the Tomb Raider reboot and Uncharted series.
This will just be gamepass fodder and no where near as good as the tomb raider and uncharted games, so for me I say let xbox keep this one
Would this be a VR game?
That's the feeling I get.
@deathaxe No they don't - Activision lost the game rights in 2014 I believe so they reverted to Marvel and Sony did a deal with Disney as part of the MCU movie rights to get a first party game out.
Disney have no problem licensing out exclusives - as others have said, there are several Disney games exclusive to certain platforms, such as the Marvel game that came out a year or so ago to Switch.
The point is that Disney don't really care - they get paid for the rights regardless of single or multi-plat.
Begun,The next gen exclusive war has.
More indie sh*t clogging up the store.
Oh GOD YAWN... I guess we going to get this everytime now from a game from Bethesda? I couldn't care less about Bethesda games anyway so the 'Internet' can bang on about it until they are blue in the face then
@get2sammyb They don't own them yet.
Bethesda more renowned for first person games. Please don't let Indy be that. Has to be third person. I want to see him in all his glory when I'm controlling him. God, this excites me. I love Indy!
@KidBoruto can you imagine? Uncharted, but with Indy instead. That would be a knock out!! Exciting!
@DeepSpace5D no way an Indy game could be FP surely? Not interested if it is. I want to see him in all his glory as I manouvre through booby traps etc!
@tomassi I’d have to agree, I can’t imagine an Indiana Jones game thats not third-person.
I wonder how that will turn out with MachineGames, as far as I know, always making first-person shooters.
Bethesda Games are predominantly first-person with optional third-person modes. But you can always tell the games were meant to be played in first-person. The third-person animation is always incredibly janky.
@tomassi Exactly! I'm so hungry for more Uncharted/Tomb Raider-like games, think I'll go back to playing Rise of the Tomb Raider.
@Futureshark you were saying ?
@Etzio
It was almost a year ago, what was I saying and what are you referring to what I was saying to make you say, 'you were saying'?
