Ah, the eternal question: will Sony release God of War: Ragnarok on the PlayStation 4 as well as the PlayStation 5? Our opinion: buckle yourselves in for a cross-gen sequel, folks – but until Sony officially clarifies, it’s all just speculation. That’s what series creator David Jaffe was also doing on a livestream this week, but it didn’t take long for the media to pick up on his comments and run with them.
“Oh, I’m sure the next God of War will be PS4 [and] PS5,” he said, clearly sharing an opinion. “Of course it will. I mean [PlayStation boss] Jim Ryan has pretty much said as much.” Jaffe is referring to various interviews with the Sony bigwig where he’s stressed the importance of the company’s last-gen console. Late last year, he also dropped a big fat “no comment” when asked specifically about Ragnarok’s availability.
Nevertheless, Jaffe was sharing an opinion, and since the story started to circulate around the web, he’s put out a clarification tweet in his trademark style. Apologies for the cursing within:
It was obvious that the former Sony Santa Monica man was merely airing an opinion, and we happen to agree with him. Ultimately, though, until the platform holder comes out and clarifies exactly which consoles you can expect to play God of War: Ragnarok on, this is all just educated speculation. So let’s wait and see what future announcements bring, eh?

Oh look another developer with name calling language i wont be buying God Of War now f***ing moron /s
@Gaming365247 You do realise he hasn't worked on God of War in 15 years, right?
@Gaming365247 You realise this guy isn't making the game?!
God of War was one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played on PS4 Pro. A cross gen release doesn’t concern me at all. David Jaffe has always been this way, it would be weird for him to speak like a gentlemen. Like a chicken mooing.
Don't really care. Having played the last one, I doubt I'll be bothering.
@Gaming365247 you do realise you just copied his behaviour like a hypocrite.
@Welsh_Will @get2sammyb
You all missed the sarcasm and i'm partly making fun of so call fans of another developer and twitter rage
I thought that was always pretty clear. That tweet is kind of intense lol
God of war the g.o.a.t.king kratos on ps4 pro still will looks amazing.but ps5 will definitely wheres its at.word up son
Let's face it, it depends on how well the PS5 sells. Sells well, it's on PS4, sells not so well, it's a PS5 exclusive. Or they get best of both worlds and make it a timed exclusive. The PS5 seems to be doing just fine though so I expect it to come to PS4.
@Gaming365247 My bad, that definitely went over my head.
David Jaffe expecting people on the Internet to have Common Sense... that's funny.
@Old-Red They've been working on the game for at least two years and it's due out this year. They can't just change course and suddenly add/remove a version based on hardware sales I wouldn't think.
It'll be out on both.
@Old-Red - Perhaps, but the PS5 would be selling even better if they actually had more PS5's to sell.
What has this dude been up to in recent years? Still making games?
@Gaming365247 Fair enough!
@get2sammyb Maybe, but I'm pretty sure Sony would be prepared drop the PS4 version if the PS5 was bombing. I wouldn't be surprised if Demon's Souls had a PS4 version they decided to drop so they had at least one game to draw in people like me who'd buy a console for it.
Is it even called Ragnarok? Or is it just another PushSquare colon conspiracy theory?
@Octane Not officially - not yet anyway. Sony refers to it as "God Of War sequel" and Cory Barlog as "never heard of it"
@Stragen8 - Nah he mostly just does Podcast & Let's Plays, he has a YT Channel. Other then that, I don't know what else he does.
@Octane - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty7WudwSKMA
Makes sense for sony not to say and avoid a cyberpunk situation. Make the game you want to make then see if you can get it to work adequately on a ps4. If so great, if not ps5 only.
Maybe im immature, but i found the first sentence pretty funny.
I think gow will be released on ps4 and ps5, there's just too many ps4 owners and unlike ps3, ps4 gamers still use their ps4. Besides, it's still hard to get ps5 with normal price.
God of War on PS4 was a complete bimbo of a game: great looks but no substance, and boring as sin.
As such I have little interest in a sequel unless it goes back to its roots. Nevertheless, as long as it’s built from the ground up for PS5, I don’t see why it would matter if a downgraded version is released on PS4.
It will most likely be on both and what this means is that we PS5 owners will be getting another supped-up PS4 game that calls itself a PS5 game.
There is more to true next gen than FPS and ray-tracing.
Surely, there is gameplay, animation and AI that is possible on the PS5 that is not possible on the PS4.
@JapaneseSonic I called this on this very site before the PS5 released as well as others and angered many people.
Cross-gen hinders the growth of games. There is more to next-gen than ray tracing and FPS. I can’t wait to see improvements in gameplay, animation and AI.
It’s looking like it will be a few years before we see a true PS5 game due to the meltdown many gamers had on Twitter and other sites crying it’s not fair that games move on with new systems. Ryan backtracked on that believing in generations statement.
I mean, as a PS5 owner I wish it'd be a PS5 exclusive. It would make a great system seller, too. Having that said, and I know it's not really a comparison, but Sackboy really looks next gen on the PS5... and add the fact that GoW still looks amazing, I think they'll do alright job.
@JustPlainLoco That's IGN. They make mistakes all the time. They're one big mistake.
Continuing to release big games like this in cross-gen format is certainly not going to help them achieve their "quickest transition to a new console ever", or whatever it was they said... But I get it, huge install base for PS4. Just hope that they're still really going to push the PS5 hardware for this and Horizon.
Course it’ll be cross gen. There’s over 100 million PS4s out there and GoW sold really.
@Octane - While you're right about IGN, I just grabbed the first trailer I could find, but I doubt PlayStation would have put 'Ragnarok Is Coming' if it wasn't somehow connected to it's actual title, and considering how much they teased the cataclysmic event (Ragnarok) in the first game (God of War 2018), people would naturally assume it will be titled 'God of War Ragnarok', plus it does seem like they're doing away with the numerical titles, doubt the next God of War will be title GOW2 or GOW5, otherwise the would have numbered the last game.
@JustPlainLoco Well, surely a God of War sequel is going to be called Ragnarok, but I don't think it's this one. Ragnarok sounds like the last one, because it's literally the final thing that happens in Norse mythology. And it feels a bit like a waste if this is just a two-parter. Additionally, we only fought Baldur in the first game. One of many Norse gods. I don't think we get to see the rest of them in the sequel. There's enough material for even more than a trilogy I'd reckon.
Ragnarok is coming, sounds like the beginning of Ragnarok, not necessarily Ragnarok itself. A bunch of events happen before Ragnarok. It starts with the death of Baldr, then a three-year long winter happens. And it started snowing at the end of the game. So I think Ragnarok is quite a bit away still.
@JapaneseSonic Framerate and stability way faster startups is a big thing for me im playing on a base PS4 isnt that a big upgrade? I think i will be happy when i finally get a PS5. But isnt every generation a upgrade the controllers sound like something special too but i dont know yet because i dont have it. 😅
As long as Spiderman 2 isn't cross gen, idc. But Im starting to be worried
@JapaneseSonic Well its easy 100 million plus customers or 5 million i know what i would choose as a company.
“We believe in generations”
@Stragen8 his last game, a PS4 exclusive called Drawn to Death, was released on 2017. I don't have a clue what he's been working on after that.
@Octane - You do bring up a lot of good points, very well I concede, but then honestly I don't know what else the title could be, however I do recall some 'Leaks' & 'Rumors' suggesting that the next God of War would be titled 'Fimbulwinter', as it was mentioned a lot toward the last act of the last game.
@JapaneseSonic They did release cross gen versions of MLB The Show for both PS2 and PS3 until 2011, and did the same thing again with MLB The Show 2014-16 getting both PS3 and PS4 ports. So Sony isn't too quick to drop a massive player base if given the chance
It was also much harder back in the PS3 and PS2 era to release functional cross gen game given engines wasn't nearly as scalable as they are now. So it just made more sense to just drop the last generation of systems. If anything, both Miles Morales and Sackboy shows that Sony can make games that take advantage of the next gen features without leaving the previous generation behind.
Man I'd love it if Twisted Metal were the next PS franchise to get the remake treatment from Bluepoint.
Throw Kratos in as a special bonus character too, I'm sure he'd be right at home!
@JustPlainLoco Yeah, that's the three-year long winter. I've suggested that myself as well (ask @rjejr ). But my only problem is that the name doesn't quite roll off the tongue like the average subtitle, so they may pick a different one.
@JapaneseSonic Not a lot of consoles sold yet less then 5 million its that easy if you dont want too hear its not my problem. The PS3 was a expensive console thats the other thing and the PS4 made them money from the start.
@JustPlainLoco Will contest that @Octane knows way more about this stuff than any non-Viking should. And of course he's right about IGN.
I don't think Ragnarok is an official title yet, but I spent a year complaining that Pushsquare kept calling it "Playstation 5" even though Sony only ever kept saying "next console" or "next gen" but of course they did call it PS5, never had any doubt, but it was never official, so I complained, and I've had my share of abuse.
Could be "GoW: Ragnarok", could be "GoW: Winter is Coming" if they can afford the licensing fees. I think the title depends at least on 1 big issue nobody has really been addressing - is this next game the 2nd part of 3 or is it the 2nd part of 2? GoW being part 1. If this game finishes up the story started in 1, then GoW: Ragnarok it is. If this is the middle part 2 of a trilogy, then it can't be called Ragnarok b/c part 3, assuming the last part to be part 3, would be called Ragnarok.
Maybe they'll just call it "God of War" again. They already gave that exact name to two games, why not a third? God of War 2?
How many games if FF7R going to be again? 🤣
Hey octane, glad to hear from ya, somebody on the NL live chat was asking about ya, and I realized I hadn't seen ya in awhile. Assumed holiday vacay, hopefully not COVID hospital stay.
Chances are it'll be on both. PS4 is more than capable machine even if it's not quite as 'shiny' as the PS5.
If they want decent revenue, then it'll be on the 4 and the 5.
Only thing is if Sony use this as a "buy our new console" pawn and release it only for the PS5 just because they want to shift white units and not black ones, not because the 4 won't run a more than acceptable version.
@rjejr Which live chat? I've been out of the loop for a while. The holidays are more time consuming and less of a vacation. It's been a month or so! And without much news on either Nintendo or Sony's front, there's little excitement for me to keep checking back every day.
Dave sounds like a f***ing jack@$$. I hope Ragnarok doesn't come out on PS4. It needs to harness the power of the PS5.
@Gaming365247 You may want to consider growing some thicker skin.
@Octane Live chat was probably the wrong term, sorry. Some early morning "Direct" like thing on NL that bored everyone to tears, maybe 2 weeks ago. Not MH yesterday, that was good. I'm trying my hardest to remember but I got nothing.
Just went over the last months worth of articles and I don't think it was Sephiroth, Indie World Direct or the Nintendo World amusement park, bc/ I didn't watch any of those live, so I give up now.
Yes i think it'll be cross gen. They need to Ps4 sales too. It'll probably kick ass regardless if the last GOW is anything to go by. However the ps4 will undoubtedly be holding creative development back. The real next gen GOW will be the one that follows Ragnorok.
