Coronavirus means students are currently taking Potions Classes from home, and you’re also going to have to wait to enrol on your adventure in Hogwarts Legacy. The game – expected to be released in 2021 – will now pack up its broomstick until 2022, with developer Avalanche needing additional time to realise its vision for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 open world game.
“Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us, so we’re giving the game the time it needs,” the studio said as part of a now-customary Twitter post on a yellowish background. “Hogwarts Legacy will now be released in 2022.” It went on to thank fans from around the world for its “tremendous reaction” to the announcement.
Obviously this is hugely disappointing news, but it’s an ambitious project and it deserves time to realise its full potential. Hopefully we at least get some updates on the game’s progress throughout 2021, as we’re still watching that inaugural trailer on repeat.

Disappointing news, but completely understandable. The COVID-19 pandemic has ruined development plans for every studio.
A shame, but as long as the project is progressing and is still in development then I'm happy to wait for it to realise its full potential!
I didn’t realize Avalanche was the dev, hopes lowered.
Just Cause 4 on the PS4 is my reasoning.
If I’m confusing devs, I apologize.
Well at least the background wasn't Yellow.
A) Sad news. B) Beautiful puns.
And that’s one down from your poll 😂😂
more delays to be announce according to Jason schreier.
I hope not Horizon f.w
Better for sony to handle their timetable 🙂
Ah gutted, but to be honest I think a lot of games will be delayed this year. As long as it comes out finished then I will be happy. Really looking forward to it, looks really good.
Boo! Was looking forward to this too 😤😤
@OmegaStriver it's not Avalanche Studios but Avalanche Software and believe it, that doesn't help my expectations at all.
These guys made nothing but kiddie games.
My hype has been lowered since I figured that out.
Boo!
Oh well, cross this one off my list.
Still enough new games coming this year and others from last year (yes Cyberpunk I mean you!) to keep me busy until Hogwarts comes out.
Can't wait to see the ***** show on the reddit page!
If Horizon and God of War get delayed, who do you think wins goty?
@JAMes-BroWWWn Looooooooooooool. I saw their games list on google. hahahahahahahaha
Well I hope this is their fly me to the moon moment
Part of me wonders if part of the reason for the delay is to give people time to forget about JK being a bigot.
Tis unfortunate, but totally understandable in these times.
I am equal parts excited and weary of this game.
Didn't Portkey Games make that awful mobile game which tried to charge a few quid a few mins in as your character is attacked by Devil's Snare?
Hogwarts - Hogwash !
I'm okay with it if that means we get polished game
I think 2021 is still stacked with great games , we will be fine 👌🏽
@LiterallyDoNotCare returnal or kena or resident evil 8
If breath of the wild get delayed as well.
Damn. Oh well. Plenty in 2021 to still look forward to.
This game looks like its huge. They can take as long as they want to smooth out any issues. Would be great to have a physical version with no day one patch.
@LiamCroft
Not to mention just about every other business along with the lives of everyone worldwide.
Sadly, I dont forsee things returning to pre-covid days anytime soon.
@Classic_console Read my mind. I would add final fantasy 16 if luminous learned from ff15.
Botw2 is set for 2021? Cause if that's coming, ain't nothing beating it. In this scenario. I think horizon and gow can compete with it
As long as the game eventually gets released in a decent state, I'm okay with delays.
Shame. I do think we’re forgetting that games we’re delayed before Coronavirus though. None of their statements mentioned and it may have just needed more time.
Good!
This needs all the dev time it can get. The more effort put into it, the better.
@Jaz007 True! But as you said, games were delayed before COVID and COVID has made games even harder to make, so it's a no-brainer the two will go hand-in-hand.
Just like Ragnorok, I never believed this game would come out in 2021.....now prove me wrong Cory!
Sorry bet used to this throughout the whole of 2021. I will give my PS5 to a worthy cause if Horizon Zero Dawn 2 makes it this year 2021.
Of course I will buy a new one as well.
Saw this coming... More shocking there will be a Ps4 game in 2022. This will be a slow year for new games mark my words. Thank god for the never ending backlog
Noooooooo Sad news! But I'm still excited for it.
Genuinely gutted. Was super hyped for this one. Wonder how much of this delay relates to developer concerns over the recent JK Rowling controversy
Stupefied.. great Disturbed song
Oh no what will I do without what is likely another poorly done Harry Potter game?
But seriously delay until ready. Cyberpunk should have been delayed on everything because it was horrible on everything and half finished. People still blaming the PS4 like any version of that game worked properly.
I'm hopeful that this will be good.
Well this is disappointing. Probably my most anticipated game this year.
@OmegaStriver Yeah, Just Cause 4 is one of the few games I can think of that actually looks and plays worse than the game that came before it. Just Awful.
Quite looking forward to playing HP though. Looking veeery forward to it, it seems.
@Perryg92 No. Portkey Games is just a licensing label similar to recent announced lucasfilm games. They don't actually develop any games. They just work with studios. Jam City would have probably been the developer of the really bad mobile game.
There will be plenty of games to play this year, this is actually good news lol
Rather have a delay than Hogwarts 2077, amirite?
Love the “disturbed” title of the article! I am “stricken” and “down with the sickness.”
get ready for the death threats and the OMG ITS NOT FINISHED REFUND PLEASE! XD
Good on them announcing this in January. Plan this stuff out early to avoid unrealistic hype and hopefully crunch.
I'll be using most of this year to finish up my backlog anyway so no rush.
Great news - hopefully developers learned from CDR and we won't get a rushed, broken game at launch
Not too bothered, still have Returnal , Nior , Resident evil village and Deathloop to look forward too, and the new Horizon if we're lucky.
And there goes my most anticipated release of 2021. No worries though, I've got a huge backlog still on my PS4 and Xbox One - and this relieves a bit of pressure to get a PS5 as soon as possible.
@Classic_console I really want to play Returnal everything looks so awsome about it.
@LiterallyDoNotCare @JAMes-BroWWWn They do have some mature gaming experience though...
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
Rampage 2: Universal Tour
Rampage Through Time
Prince of Persia: Arabian Nights
Tak and the Power of Juju
Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams
Tak 3: The Great Juju Challenge
Dragon Ball Z: Sagas
@KidBoruto Only games I find mature on that list are mk and prince of persia.
@KidBoruto I just checked. Dragonball is Teen but kids love the show and young adults that like it now is because they liked it when they were kids. The rest are E rated. The 2 I mentioned are M and they aren't recent games. Hopefully, like I said, this is their fly me to moon moment.
Also. Just in case you mention it later. I didn't say I wouldn't play those games. I want to play temtem atm but In my mind I know it's a game for everyone, leaning towards kids (if you've seen the animated trailer)
