It feels like the world wants a new Ninja Gaiden game as developer Team Ninja wraps up work on The Nioh Collection — a remastered bundle of the two PlayStation 4 games. That's out in just a few weeks on PlayStation 5, but according to series director Fumihiko Yasuda, his attention won't now turn to Ryu Hayabusa. That's because Yasuda claims a new entry in the franchise is not currently in development, and there aren't any plans for another game as of right now either.
Speaking with Video Games Chronicles, he said: "[There are] no plans currently, but I’ve always wanted to make a new instalment in the series, so here’s hoping for that!" So the Ninja Gaiden III director wants to make it happen, but it doesn't look like it'll be the developer's next project at the very least. The title in question won't be a Nioh 3 either as Yasuda states there are "no plans for a sequel at this point".
Hopes for some sort of Ninja Gaiden revitalisation took a positive turn last year when a Ninja Gaiden Sigma Trilogy collection was listed for sale by a Hong Kong publisher. Coupled with a March 2021 release, we can probably chalk it up as a simple mistake at this point. That is unless a publisher plans to announce and launch the bundle in quick succession. Do you hope Ryu makes a grand return at some point in the future? Slice and dice in the comments below.

So What Are They Working On Dead Or Alive 7?
I remember Ninja being the game that finally drove me crazy with the horrible camera angles.
@Areus I honestly hope so, lol. As much flak as that series gets...I really like the gameplay, music, and characters. If it's any consolation, Hayabusa's story in those games is canon with Ninja Gaiden, so there's that!
DOA is my favourite fighting game series so I'm really hoping for an installment on PS5, given the reception of the last entry it'd be nice to know they've not given up on the franchise.
Considering I wasn't keen on Ninja Gaiden 3 I'm not too fussed. The original director of Gaiden 1+2 is however founding a new studio. So hopefully he can do a similar style game to Gaiden 1+2, just with an original IP.
@pip_muzz - Yeah NG3 was a dog of a game. Hopefully Itagaki still has the staff from his Team Ninja though he said he wants to work with Microsoft again. Either way I hope his new studio can do something along the lines of NG.
@Shigurui I forgot the name of the Wii U game he did a few years back but that wasn't meant to be that great.
I still think Ninja Gaiden 1/Black/Sigma is one the best action games ever made.
A tad too many projectile based enemies in Gaiden 2 but I loved the violence factor in that one.
Edit: Itagaki is his name. Thanks, I forgot that.
Ok whoa.
NINJA NOT APPROVED
As much as I would love a Nioh 3, the breadth of content in the Nioh Collection is impressive and I will absolutely be repurchasing this remastered collection on PS5. I love the idea of having the entire Nioh experience in it’s best form in one place.
Ninja Gaiden was great fun but how do you improve on it in a new way after the depth of Nioh? A challenge indeed.
I’d like to see Team Ninja tackle a new I.P. They are clearly a very talented developer with a unique vision.
Didn't read the original article, but from what I understood from Gematsu's article, only Nioh 3 was confirmed not to be currently in development, and that we should expect news related to the NG series and / or Ryu Hayabusa soon.
PS: NG3 RE is easily overlooked due to the vanilla version. It's my favourite in the modern series.
@pip_muzz - Devil's Third. An absolute train wreck of a game, the MP side of it was bonkers but a lot of fun though.
@Jimmer-jammer - NG doesn't need improving much. Take the combat engine of NG2 which to this day has never been bettered by any hack/slash game imho, make a few new enemy types and a new story that doesn't have truly abysmal T-Rex boss fights or try to give Ryu step children. Job done.
@Shigurui I agree that NG doesn’t really need improving, and that’s my point I guess. NG 2 has an incredibly tight combat system but a sequel would be a lot of work for a few new enemy types, and Nioh just has so much going on in it, between the two it’s like, where do you go from here? Believe me, I would be there day one for a new NG or Nioh, but I would be more excited by a new I.P. at this point.
Well that's a kick in the nuts! I know I'm in the vast minority but I loved Ninja Gaiden 3 and Razor's Edge. NG Black and NG 2 are some of my favourite ever and the combat hasn't aged a day in my eyes. I've owned pretty much every version of each game on all platforms and was really hoping for a new game in the series. A trilogy release with original 3 and Sigma/RE versions included would be a day one preorder for me.
@Jimmer-jammer - Isn't Nioh 2 basically Nioh 1.5? I don't see how a new NG would be a huge amount of work if they repurpose existing tech. Also, balls hard games weren't really a hot thing when NG/B/2 were new.
These days people are a lot more receptive to games with obnoxious difficulty. A return to form NG game would likely do good numbers.
@Shigurui hmm...the more I think about it, a defining area for me in NG and an area they could expand on is the platforming/verticality/level design. If Team Ninja are up to the challenge, I’d be there day one, like I said.
As an aside, I personally see Nioh 2 as a huge improvement on Nioh, with enough refinements and added mechanics to warrant that full 2.
Hi there fellow gamers.
That is a shame. Ninja Gaiden should definitely make a return.
Such a cool, hardcore franchise.
Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge was indeed a better game, for sure, but it wasn´t amazing like the previous entries.
Hopefully, with the Nioh experience that they now have, they can make an awesome NG game in the future, as well as a
Nioh 3 game, but maybe on a different time period and location.
Gonna have to wait and see.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
@pip_muzz Hi there friend.
Absolutely agree. Ninja Gaiden Black is the BEST version of that game.
I played NG on OG Xbox, NG Black on Xbox 360 and NG Sigma on PS3. Loved all of them.
But Black was just perfect, in my oppinion.
Still remember having to press the jump button super rapidly for Ryu to be able to run on water to get to a location and items.
Good times.
Cheers, stay safe and have a good one
@RaZieLDaNtE Yes. I never played the OG on Xbox much but owned both Black and Sigma. Black was just better, despite the graphical improvements on Sigma the Black version just felt "tighter" gameplay wise. Likewise with Gaiden 2 and Sigma 2.
Stay safe too and here's to a Ninja Gaiden 4 one day.
Never been a massive fan of the game liked Nioh way better then NG and damn the dude who made those is a ass anyway.
After 2 games in the Souls series Miyazaki worked on Bloodborne. The Nioh team should do something similar, work on something similar to Nioh, but with a twist.
I really like the Nioh series, however I'd like the team apply this formula to outside of warring Japan.
@Flaming_Kaiser I like him. He speaks his mind and even if you don't agree with him, he still created DOA and the modern NG games. Personally I prefer his interviews to a lot of the more bland developers out there.
They need to take another crack at Dead or Alive. DOA6 was a huge let down, and don’t release season passes for 70 dollars. 😑
@__jamiie You can speak your mind without acting like a ass and he cant do that.
