Sick and tired of waiting for The Elder Scrolls VI to come along? You could always take its mammoth MMO brethren for a spin, which has just announced yet another gargantuan expansion for PlayStation players to look forward to later this year. The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood arrives on 8th June 2021, representing a key moment in the Gates of Oblivion tale that Bethesda plans to tell throughout the entirety of this coming year. Get a load of the announcement trailer above for some more context or even to just admire the action.
Set 800 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the city of Leyawiin will be the DLC's main hub area — encompassing a new Companions system too. You'll be able to recruit a unique NPC and give them their own weapons and backstory, essentially creating your own character to fight alongside. Over on the PlayStation Blog, creative director Rich Lambert expands on what to expect from Blackwood story-wise. "This year, the story we are telling is essentially about a deal with the devil. Long ago, the Longhouse Emperors made a pact with Mehrunes Dagon, and it’s up to the players to figure out what is going on and how to stop their schemes from reaching completion."
The Blackwood expansion can be pre-ordered on the PlayStation Store right now, offering new players a bundle to jump in with as well as seasoned veterans direct access to the DLC itself. The former will set you back £49.99/$59.99 and includes the base version of Blackwood alongside the base game and every expansion that has come before it. For those who already own all of that content, they can opt for the standalone £32.99/$39.99 version of Blackwood. A more expensive digital Collector's Edition includes various mounts, pets, outfits, and emotes.
Have you been keeping up with The Elder Scrolls Online and are looking forward to this Blackwood expansion? Or maybe you want to try it out for the first time? Either way, share your thoughts in the comments below.

I think I'd enjoy this mmo if the gameplay didn't feel floaty and garbage to play.
@Nepp67 Unfortunately skill-based action RPGs run counter to MMO design methodologies. If you could technically beat any enemy in the game through skill and zero grinding for those items and levels which tap into their monetisation scheme then they’d lose their whales. That’s why many of them feel like simple gameplay mechanics with steadily increasing numbers. Enemies are harder not due to mechanics but due to having higher health or hitting harder. There’s a reason I don’t often last that long playing MMOs 😅
@nessisonett Yeah that's the unfortunate truth and I don't mind the enemies having higher health and hitting harder since obviously it's an mmo but I just wish the impact of hitting enemies and moving around felt better. It's like like I'm hitting nothing or I'm walking on air. I'd love to play something like FF14 but subscriptions for a single game is just not my cup of tea.
Starfield, please.
@Nepp67 I lasted the whole of the original story in Final Fantasy XIV but I just don’t have the time to sink into it for the expansions, as great as the story is!
@nessisonett Considering how big mmos usually (And especially ff14) are that's completely understandable!
I feel like if Bethesda gave up on ESO and FO76 they would’ve released ESVI by now and would be working on fallout 5...
The main thing missing from mmos is the social aspect of them. Long live everquest
I'm still enjoying this years after I took a punt on it in one of the PS Store sales (think it was about £9?) as I wanted a western RPG for the PS4.
I don't bother with the ESO+ sub so it's free to play apart from all the bought expansions of course!
@MidnightDragonDX Yes, even though the MS takeover is imminent, they've already said that this game is still going to be supported on PS4 going forwards and they're releasing a client update for the PS5 in the next few months.
@Papasears Wish they'd have brought Everquest to the PS4 like Sony originally said (Project Orbis)
@Waffles12415 It's Zenimax Online Studios who produce ESO, whereas Bethesda is a studio owned by ZOS.
Anyway, Bethesda have got to spend some time getting dragons to look right when they're flying backwards!
@sanderson72 Yea I really miss the social interaction on eq, to this day theres nothing like it.
