Man, the newly formed Lucasfilm Games is popping up all over the place right now. Ubisoft has just announced a brand new Star Wars project in partnership with the aforementioned studio, and the game's development will be led by the developer behind The Division. This is all still very early in the production process, to the point where Ubisoft Massive is still hiring staff. As such, don't expect to see or hear more from it for quite a few years.
Julian Gerighty, director of The Division 2 and The Crew, will be the game's creative director, using the studio's Snowdrop engine. "Beyond that, Lucasfilm Games hasn’t revealed anything about the characters or settings within the Star Wars universe that the game will feature." As for EA's part in all of this, who continue to hold a 10-year exclusivity deal to Star Wars video games, it looks like Lucasfilm Games are allowing the brand to be worked on by various different teams now. Speaking to Wired, it said: "EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward. But we did feel like there's room for others."
What Star Wars tale, new or old, do you hope this new game tells? Share your theories in the comments below.

See you in 2026!
yes, please don't allow more garbage from EA, I would have loved Bioware to make something epic but EA have absolutely wasted the IP, they'vemade some good and competent games but nothing I care for, Squadrons VR may be great, I've yet to boot it up
EA lost the star wars licence? 😂 Excellent.
I had such a great time with The Division 2 and Star Wars is one of my favorite IPs, I’m all for this.
@solocapers They didn't lose it, they just no longer have exclusive access.
I know a different team, but this makes me wonder if Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be re-skinned into a Star Wars game :/
Just have Ubi Montpellier as a support studio. Ubi seem to use multiple studios on one project often.
Not sure how I feel about a Star Wars GaaS (which this sounds like) but I guess it could work
Really? I rather have ubisoft than ea, nice 😃
@Voltan The division 2 is the only gaas (multiplayer) games that I like, it's a good single player games too. Of course since it's need always online connection, I bought it not at full price.
@solocapers
Did you even read the article?
I wonder is this will be their new live game, instead of a Division 3 we get this? With Destiny 2s (im presuming here) last major expansion Lightfall coming in 2022, that lasts for a year and If Ubisoft time the release date right, there could be a lot of players available for a new Sci Fi Dark vs Light looter shooter. And at least with Ubi, you know you are going to get a massive beautiful world and a pretty decent live game as well..
Lucasfilm games meeting with EA
EA have had the licence since mid 2013 so they only have 2.5 years left anyway, unless the 10 year exclusivity thing didn't start straight away. Probably getting stuff in the pipeline ready as I assume this game is a few years off.
@wiiware I tried the beta of the first Division, decided it wasn't my thing. I'll be keeping my eye on this though.
The Division is one of the dullest games i played on PS4. Hopefully it won’t be like that with a Star Wars coat of paint.
Hope it's more like Mandalorian than Rise of The Skywalker.
Star wars, Indiana and 007 oh my, next-gen gaming is getting hotter
EA's rights only last two more years. It's good to see that they're allowing other companies to make Star Wars games. I don't expect them before 2023 because of that reason, but at least it isn't locked to one company anymore.
That being said, I am currently playing through Jedi Fallen Order, and it's a brilliant game so far!
As much as I hate Ubisoft and looter shooters i'm just ecstatic that other companies can make Star Wars games again hopefully we can get a few from WWS I mean Insomniac Games + Star Wars? YES PLEASE!!!!
@Voltan I bought it when it's $3 on pc (and ps4) lol, I didn't buy it on ps4 because I tried the beta and the framerate is really bad on ps4 pro (not smooth 30 fps), but the game is really nice on pc when it's smooth 60 fps. I heard division 2 ps5 will get 60 fps patch soon.
I really don't see the Star Wars license leapfrogging from EA to Ubisoft being a massive improvement....
@get2sammyb As long as we are still getting a Jedi Fallen order sequel I'm happy.
Star Wars game from The Division team sounds too much like Avengers 2.0 to excite me yet. But I'll keep an open mind down the road.
Lastly weren't Massive developing the new Avatar game/s?
This is a lot less exciting than the Machine Games "Indy" news from yesterday or the IO "Bond".
While I think Massive is a very good studio and "The Division 2" was great fun in my 20 hours with it, until I lost every interest, because of all the gaas-grinding and unnecessarily complex systems. You still have Ubisoft involved, which means, it will certainly suck in the long run.
Not exactly the best timing to give the "Star Wars" license, when they are at their historically worst (not financially, of course and that's probably all Disney is interested in), while EA is showing some goodwill, recently.
Also, wasn't Massive working on an "Avatar" game, too. I wonder where that went.
"EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward. But we did feel like there's room for others."
The day Federation Internationale de Football Association also feels there's room for others like PES, it'd be a great day.
@Perryg92 I saw some pre alpha footage which was basicly coruscant. Good point.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi you say 'garbage' but SWBF2 is now an excellent game, Jedi Fallen Order is really good and Squadrons is decent as well. In fact, even the first Battlefront still gets played by my son and I on occasion. I'd say EA have actually done pretty well with Star Wars to date.
Can somebody make a Mara Jade game please? Preferably Naughty Dog.
The reality is that the agreement in place likely allows for discussion to take place with other developer/publishers.
The deal is till 2023 and this game certainly won’t be out by then. Be lucky if its 2024.
Incredibly excited regardless!
I just pray we get a Battlefront 3 because 2 really is an exceptional online shooter now. They butchered the launch, but the game now is really remarkable, especially the co-op missions which have seen countless hours played in the past few months.
Exciting times ahead
Yessss, the exclusive deal with EA is over!
The Division 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, this along with one of my favourite franchises surely means I can either be very happy or bitterly disappointed.
Please don't allow me to get on the hype train, someone stop me!
This might just be a very interesting new era of licensed games. Considering the last good era of movie game licenses gave us Shadow of Mordor, Alien Isolation, and Mad Max; I am optimistic.
@tomassi I said they've made good and competent games with a lot of garbage decisions. nothing I care for unfortunately
@Icey664 yes hence laughing at EA clearly not having their 'exclusive' deal anymore.
@get2sammyb I thought the exclusivity deal was until 2023? Which is why this game coming in 2026 would be no problem lol
No Division 3 then?
I just hope it's not some looter shooter, I'm tired of those. Make a good campaign and a solid multiplayer system. No need for loot or microtransaction.
But since it's the director of both Division 2 and The Crew just imagine the potential of a huge map of Tatooine and you're able to go by speeder bike or with any Star Wars ship and cruise the entire planet the potential is huge!
@RBMango Ubisoft doesn't get the exclusive rights, they just get to make a game. If correct, going forward, any company could theoretically pitch a game and make a Star Wars game.
Interesting news. At least this one will be coming to PS.
😉
Could be cool, but it's a loooooong way off so it's hard to really care all that much at this stage.
"The director of The Crew and The Division 2 will be the creative director...."....oh dear, let's hope he's that bit more creative with this one
People jumping on the hate train slagging EAs Star Wars games, but SWBF 2 is a fantastic game now, along with Squadrons and Jedi Order being superb. Not to mention the Old Republic still going strong. No other publisher / developer will do a better job - particularly bloody Ubisoft !
I’m with KingPev sometimes it really is better the devil you know. And while this will likely mean far more in quantity than EA has been bothered to push out I’m getting a real micro transaction games as a service vibe. Hopefully Disney have learnt something from Battlefront 2 launch.
That's just awful. I mean Ubishit is the worst company. It makes EA looking like a bunch of decent people.
@TheArt
I hope and pray this will be true one day.
#IBelieve
@Fenbops Same dude, I really didn't want a star wars game to be made by Ubisoft.
Star Wars: Nerf Herder's Creed
@ApostateMage Hi there friend.
That could be very interesting.
Even more so seeing Naughty Dog doing something different and new.
And in the Star Wars Universe? Yes please
But isn´t she a non canon character now?
Just wondering.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
I just threw up in my mouth a lil
Well, on the plus side, it's nice knowing that the exclusivity deal with EA isn't going to be extended, meaning potentially a wider-variety, and increased number of Star Wars games in the future.
On the down-side though, it seems it's still a ways off yet, meaning we'll have to hope EA's line-up for the near future maintains the level of quality Squadrons and Fallen Order have provided.
For a split second I thought it was a new startrek game.
And for an android that is an eternity!
With Ubisoft joining the fold I do not see any improvement here. Similar mentality of online only is the future, games as service, shady microtransactions and the list goes on.
And Bethesda is one of the most lifeless pulibshers out there, though the Wolfenstein games do have the most personality out of all of their IPs, so there is hope.
Personally would prefer Lucasfilm games in the hands of Sega (action RPG), Square/Enix (JRPG) and Capcom (action adventure). Of course a Sony studio would yield great results, but I wouldn't find it fair to keep it console exclusive like Spiderman/Miles Morales was (looking at you Bethesda Indy!).
Star Wars: The Empire Grinds Back.
@RaZieLDaNtE Yeah, Mara Jade is unfortunately non-cannon which is a shame because I think she's one of the more interesting characters from anything Star Wars.
So we get a lootershooter with a splash of liveservice cant wait.
@ApostateMage
She certanly is.
But I would like to see a Sith taking the lead every once in awhile.
Like the badass, non canon, Darth Talon, Darth Krayts aprentice.
Or possibly Darth Revan from KOTOR, my personal favourite Jedi Master/Sith lord.
Star Wars has so much lore and different stories they can tell with so many different and interesting characters.
It is a vast galaxy. make something with it.
Cheers, stay safe and have a good one
I'm hoping we get a Bounty Hunter or Mandalorian video game, that'd be neato!
