Developer Dual Effect has cancelled the PlayStation 4 version of survival horror game Tormented Souls, currently scheduled to release later this year. It will now only launch on PlayStation 5 alongside other platforms such as PC and Nintendo Switch. Publisher PQube hasn't disclosed why the last-gen version for Sony's older console has now been scrapped. Accompanying the announcement is a new set of screenshots, which you can view below.
The game will be made available digitally on the PS5's PlayStation Store, while a physical version can be bought at select retailers — online orders at retailer Funstock will come with an exclusive "Sun and Moon Coin". We interviewed the developer behind Tormented Souls last year, which you can read through here. What do you make of this? Puzzled by the fact it'll run on Nintendo Switch but not PS4? This has to be good news for PS5 owners because that's a lot of potential sales they're going to lose not bringing the game to PS4. I hope that means the PS5 version is going to get such a major upgrade that it can't run on a PS4.
@Hyperluminal It’s coming to Switch. I doubt that means the game will absolutely utilise the extra power of the PS5!
How on earth is it still coming to Switch? Isn't PS4 easier to develop for than Switch?
@nessisonett it was my hope. I can't think why else they'd chose PS5 over PS4. After all PS5 could probably play it too anyway.
@Hyperluminal
I think you're right, did you expand any of the screenshots? The lighting looks really good, maybe it's a 'true' PS5 game.
But if it is, I don't see how it's going to release on Switch without some major downgrading.
sun moon coin sounds like what you'd find in a zelda game lol
looks like a resi game il put this down as a game to get, thanks
Just throwing this out there - any chance Sony is starting to pay off companies to skip PS4?
I've fully expected a game or 2 to drop PS4 support, but not a game also coming to Switch, that makes no sense to me, hence the strange suggestion.🤷
There are 100 mil PS4 consoles AND 5 mil PS5 consoles that can play PS4 games, and only 5 mil PS5 consoles that can play PS5 games. Really curious to hear the explanation.
Seriously? If it can handle the Switch it can handle the PS4. Politics behind this for sure.
@Hyperluminal Maybe dumping the PS4 allows them to sell this game as a next gen game to rope in the starving PS5 gamers who will play/buy anything that isn't also on PS4.
@LordSteev yes agreed. The lighting looks nice, hard to say if there'll be any RT, but there was nothing there that made me think it could be done on a PS4. There must be more to this. Why release on Switch and PS5? Someone is taking a bung 😄
@Floki weird. You'd think they'd make it for Series X if that's the case. I'm doing ok with Demon's Souls, Spider-Man and Pathless. Astro Room was a delight too.
Definitely a bizarre choice to skip PS4 if it was already a target platform. Guess if it's good I'll check it out on Switch.
Finally, Sony have realised people are not buying a PS5 because they can just play the same games on their PS4.
@Hyperluminal The game is coming to Series X.
EDIT: The Xbox One version was also canceled along with the PS4 version.
They canceled all last gen versions (PS4, XboxOne).... this was clearly a decision by the developer (Dual Effect) and no one else...
@Floki even better news. Must mean they'll make the game as good as it can be on the new machines.
If it can run on a Switch, it can absolutely run on a PS4. Bizarre decision. Besides, people don't buy a next gen console early in its lifespan to play a spiritual throwback to PS2 survival horror games.
@rjejr Wouldn't make sense for Sony to try and scare devs off PS4 game development, considering, for all their "we believe in generations" talk, a number of their own early PS5 games are cross-gen releases.
SEE CDPR! Take notes, this is what you do when you realize during development, that certain hardware isn't able to run your game.
@rjejr Why would they do that? They have a massive stock problem why pay too sell less copies on your platform.
@The_Real_JMK Well i cant get a PS5 along with millions of others who knows how long it will stay like this. The PS4 still has enough going for it and the games i play on it still look great.
@Flaming_Kaiser @Ralizah I don't know why Sony would "scare" them off, I did say "pay" them off BTW, but it might be cheaper to pay off a smaller company for a game like that than a bigger company with a bigger game.
Just a thought. If you know what really happened feel free to share w/ the rest of us.
Are there any PS5 only games out yet? Everything is PS4/PS5 .
Developer Dual Effect will announce disappointing sales then...
50+ million active PS4s, a good proportion are the more powerful Pros, versus what, 5 million (if you're lucky) PS5s? And not every owner of either console is going to buy it.
I can imagine this happening if it's something that's going to push the hardware to the limits (as consoles evolve) but I've yet to see anything on the Switch that would cause even a base PS4 to sweat.
Edit: their website still says Steam, Switch, PS4 and XBone.
@The_Real_JMK The PS4 is still alive and kicking pretty hard.
Sad to hear the game is still coming to Switch, hopefully the PS5 release will still look really good.
@Ralizah idk about this but I saw a physical copy of the PS4 version online. I don’t know if it is old or not but it is there
@sanderson72 idk for sure but I still see a PS4 physical copy of the game online
@sanderson72 don’t think it would matter too much. Most indie games tend to sell better on Switch or PC more.
But it all depends if the switch does turn out good though!
@pushsquare
Update: by popular demand, its reconfirmed for PS4 and Xbox One now.
