There’s room for one more god slayer on PlayStation 5 and PS4 it seems, as Mulaka developer Lienzo readies Aztech Forgotten Gods for release later this year.
“In Aztech’s alternate history, European powers never arrived on the shores of ancient Mesoamerica,” the press release explains. “The Aztec Empire’s capital Tenochtitlan has thrived for centuries as a stone metropolis, technologically advanced yet heavily rooted in the ways of those indigenous to the land. Yet the gods of their past, like the feathered serpent deity Quetzalcoatl or Mictlantechutli, Lord of the Underworld, faded into distant memories. Until now.” Lore – lots of it!
You’ll take control of a character called Achtli, who awakens from an explosion to learn that her arm has been replaced with a stone artefact – and, we quote, “there’s someone in her head named Tez claiming his own divinity”. This all amounts to an action platformer, where you’ll be blistering through environments, destroying colossi and exploring optional side-quests.
“Become the city’s saviour with an adrenaline-fueled soundtrack that fuses metal with traditional Aztec instruments. Aztech Forgotten Gods’ emotional journey took inspiration from anime and superhero comics and has a vibrant, Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic to match,” the press release adds. You can check out the first trailer embedded above.

Woah it’s like Aztec Wakanda. I’m here for it.
Pretty cool, we don't get many games based on Pre-Colombian civillizations.
This looks terrific, definitely one to add to the list!
Pardon my language, but this looks fricken rad.
Looks pretty cool with some potential let’s wait and see how it turns out
Sammy, this is not just you so please don't take offence.
Please for the love of God, stop calling us Latinx. I've never in my life met a Hispanic/Latino that wanted to be called this and I have a whole family full of them. Not to mention, in the Aztech alternate history, Europeans didn't colonize the Americas so they're not even Latino, they're Aztec/Mayan/Incan/whatever presumably.
On a separate note: This looks amazing. I love media that is inspired by Mesoamerican culture and we do not see it nearly enough. I hope that the gameplay and the final product live up to this trailer and I hope to see more Mesoamerican inspired stuff going forward.
Looks ok. I hope there is lots of effin and jeffin in the script!
@meijin3 too bad, don't you know that white people are in charge of diversity and decide what your problems are and what you find socially acceptable, yep the leftist elite know what's right for you and you just need to accept that, may seem like sarcasm but unfortunately that's actually the reality we live in but don't worry they're great at brainwashing everyone into thinking this is proper and pretty soon you'll be crying alongside them.
Game looks nice hopefully it will be solid fun.
Now i'm from México and this "latinx" thing just doesn't work dude, i don't find it offensive or racist or anything like that but it's pointless and sounds kind of ... weird.
@meijin3 Im a lurker here but i made an account to make your exact point. I know woke people are trying really hard for latinx to happen but its not even a word. Its time to drop it.
@ThroughTheIris56 Cause no one knows much about them, probably lol
Always wanted to try Mulaka but never did end up getting it. Music sounds pretty good, though Vitalism do some strong stuff with a similar vibe and they do it really well, so woulda been cool if they had them on board, too.
@Jayofmaya I think it's fair to say a decent amount is known about Mesoamerican cultures. Definitely enough to make a game inspired by mythology. Not to mention these civillisations were pretty advanced despite being isolated, Incan astronomy did things Europeans could dream of. Not to mention there is media that already exists, like the film Apocalypto. Never Alone did a story based on Inupiaq mythology of all things.
@meijin3 To be fair Sammy's just reporting what the developer or publisher (who is apparently Mexican) is calling it. It's in the YouTube description. You're quite obviously right about this - I'm just saying Push Square's not really at fault here.
Being Puerto Rican/Dominican, I roll my eyes at the word 'Latinx' everytime I see and hear it, which isn't often thankfully. 'Latino/a' itself is such a misnomer since the only thing Latin about Latin America is the majority language spoken is derived from Roman Vulgar Latin, and some of us have Iberian European genetics, which may include some Roman in there from so long ago.
I'm interested in the game, though, as you don't see a lot of Aztec influenced media in general (there was that one Schmup that was released a few years ago, forgot what it was called).
@Voltan Thank you for pointing that out. I somehow entirely missed that.
@ThroughTheIris56 I suppose, but a lot of history was erased and it seems all a bit mysterious, really! Yes, similar to ancient Egypt which had not just detailed astronomy but also probable use of electricity. Then there's that ancient Greek machine. Not so primitive as we originally thought, tbh.
