The next entry in the Battlefield series will be launching this year, EA has confirmed, and it sounds like it'll be designed to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5. While developer DICE doesn't go so far as completely rule out a PS4 version, it states in a blog post: "Epic scale. All-out military warfare. Crazy, unexpected moments. Game-changing destruction. Massive battles, packed with more players and mayhem than ever before. All brought to life with the power of next-gen consoles and PCs."
The team signs off by promising a full reveal is coming "soon", which to us sounds like an unveiling during an EA Play broadcast as part of E3 2021. Other details include the fact that Criterion Games is also working on the next Battlefield instalment, and so too is DICE LA. The two studios are helping the core team bring to life their "shared vision for the game" while one further group of developers works on enhancing the currently unnamed title's technology. "Together, we are creating a jaw-dropping experience for you to enjoy later in 2021."
Many of the details within the blog post had been previously rumoured and speculated, but it's always nice to receive confirmation that the Battlefield game launching this year will indeed be designed for PS5 hardware as well as high-end PCs and the Xbox Series X. Does that fact excite you? Take cover in the comments below.

Let’s see something not often visited, like the Korean War. I’ve never been a big fan of the modern Battlefield games.
After the painfully average Cold War I am DESPERATE for a truly great Battlefield for that full scale warfare that makes me al giddy.
Bring it DICE!
I'm only interested because I need more next gen only multiplayer.
I only have temtem.
Yes. Temtem.
I'd said it.
Back4Blood delay hurts but this is probably coming around that time too.
@nessisonett really think they should just stick to fake wars. why not have a splinter cell where you attempt to infiltrate and neutralize the munich massacre terrorists while we're at it. Or set a game in the UK during The Troubles where you pick whether you wanna be a rag tag paramilitary squad blowing up pubs or an Army unit who executes civilians.
This thing where we do actual conflicts is just bizarre in my opinion.
But I know what you mean about them broadening things a bit. Trying something new.
I guess this will be another game sony wastes money on to keep off gamepass for a year -eyeroll-
I would be very surprised if its Next-Gen Only. I have no doubt that DICE are working purely on the Next-gen/PC version, maybe even with much larger scale battles but that doesn't mean a last gen version won't be released too.
Another Studio could be tasked with porting and optimising the game to the 4 last gen versions - the XB1S & X, PS4 & Pro versions. They could limit the Player base to 64 (32vs32) as previous BF games on these systems - Similar to the PS3/360 version of BF4 which was limited to 24 players whilst on PS4/XB1, we had 64 players. Also, the PS4/XB1 version targetted 60fps whilst the last gen version, just 30fps.
I doubt that BF6 will require a RT enabled GPU at the minimum for example on PC so DICE will have settings to turn off RT - like BF5. It will be built to scale across a wide range of Hardware and Frostbite scales well.
With DICE focussed on the next gen consoles (Series S, X and PS5) as well as the PC, it wouldn't surprise me if Criterion (for example) are the ones who will port and optimise the last gen version. Whether that means dropping the Visual quality (resolution and other visual settings) alone or having to make tougher decisions (limiting Player Base, reducing map size, targeting lower Frame Rates, limiting cross-play to that gen or no Cross platform play at all etc) but EA won't want to miss out on that potential market. Whether it ends up as 'different' as BF4 was on each 'gen' or even as different as CoD:BO3 was or maybe as Different as a LOT of games are today, we will have to see but its not unusual for these BIG companies to let another Studio handle the porting and optimising for the last gen hardware.
I'm well excited and all in for this. I had been considering a series X to play with an old friend but hopefully this has cross play on consoles and I can save five hundred bar.
@TrueAssassin86x - Doubtful considering EA Play is part of Game Pass.
I think it would be really cool to have a Battlefield game that adapted Crysis' in-field customization options.
I know online shooters are all about balance, but I think it would be neat if your in-match kit was expanded, letting you take in multiple scopes or barrels or clips instead of singular options. Give the player the option to take in more gear and swap stuff on the fly, like in Crysis (and Homefront), to adapt to situations.
Realize your AR needs a little more damage at distance? Carry in an extra barrel, find a corner, and swap it out so you can provide some pressure on enemy snipers. Realize you need to sneak around? Swap your barrels so you can go silenced for a bit and pull a flanking maneuver, then swap back to your standard barrel once you're successful.
I think that sort of dynamic play would be super cool amidst the massive Battlefield battles.
@zupertramp I would 100% buy an IRA vs paramilitary death squad Battlefield game. Especially if they got The Wolfe Tones to do the soundtrack. Why do fake wars when you can do real ones in extremely poor taste?
@Shigurui it'll probably just have playstation exclusive content.
@nessisonett lol fair enough. Now I gotta look up The Wolfe Tones.
@zupertramp They’re probably the biggest band that does rebel songs. Usually about ‘a wee lad from Donegal’ who often ends up dying during the Easter Rising.
@Ithinkyousuck I agree. My Activision account got hacked and permabanned and I’ve found that Activision as a company are hacks with customer service (lol all you want for naïveté), so after playing Warzone and CoD as a series, essentially, as a weekly social thing for years, I can’t play any of them at all anymore. So, yep, hoping this is a wonderful Battlefield MP experience, unlike BFV, which was... better than Apex Legends and Fortnite, I suppose.
I can remember the last BF they released at the cross gen point. The PS4/XB1 version was the main entry and the last gen was so dumbed down if was a completely different game. Hopefully they nail this one. Always love the multiplayer, but it's weakened since BF3
@nessisonett rebel-inspired with a name that's a play on both the name of a rebel leader and a type of sound that emanates from stringed instruments... I love it and I'm intrigued.
Edit: and now I'm way off topic so my bad lol.
@nessisonett That would be great! Basically WW2 on steroids.
I just hope they fix the net code, BF5 was atrocious for it's damage calculator, empty a magazine into someone's back and they turn around and one shot you. It was dodgy in the other games, but absolutely ridiculous in 5.
Vietnam...VIETNAM...
Battlefield 3 is where I started my Battlefield carrier on PS3 and was loving life... Hope B6 will bring me back to loving series.
PlayStation PoWeR
About time!
Please don't be another WW2 game xd
