With exactly one week to go until the arrival of the PlayStation 5's first big exclusive title since launch, it's time to answer the all-important question: will you be buying Returnal? To give you a better idea of what to expect from Housemarque's latest rogue-like experience, we recommend you first check out our Hands On feature. While impressions are restricted to the first two areas, we said: "By its very nature, this is a game about repeating cycles, but so far it's doing more than enough to hold our attention, and keep us curious about what's around the next corner." Our full review will follow.
In the lead up to the release of Returnal, much has been made of its $70/£70 launch price. When we asked the team about the price point, marketing director Mikael Haveri said: "Now, it is of course a new console generation and a next-gen title, so there's things that come along with that, but as long as we're fulfilling our part of it and making the best game possible, then we're doing our half of the value proposition in that regard."
We now turn the question over to you: will you be buying Returnal? Have you already pre-ordered the PS5 exclusive at the $70/£70 price point or are you waiting for a sale? Or are you simply not interested in Returnal whatsoever? Place a vote in our poll and expand on your thoughts in the comments below.

Not my kind of game, but it seems like it'll be a quality, great game.
Probably, when I eventually get a PS5 and I can get it for a serious price.
Had no interest until the preview vids.
If it's half as enjoyable as Resogun then I'll be happy.
Pre-ordered.
Yes but mostly because I have a big gift card to use. I'm so thirsty for a new PS5 game.
Yes Pre-ordered months ago it looks really cool I'm excited ^__^
Preordered from PlayStation Direct. Been into it since its reveal and everything I've seen from it has justified the $70 price tag from my end.
I'm really torn. I have loads of stuff to play on xbox and financially it makes sense to get it later. Alternatively I have the money and I do like supporting developers. We'll see.
I picked waiting for reviews. If it's too short or buggy, I'll pick it up later.
Spent a half of that in Aldi today on at least a week’s shopping. This can wait.
I've had it pre ordered for a month now. Housemarque's a sure thing.
I'm not paying £70 for a new IP in a genre I have an on and off relationship with depending on the title.
But that's just me.
I'm annoyed, because some reviewers have held it up as the first PS5 game that feels like a true next-gen game. But I don't want to throw $70 at it. Soooo waiting for sale.
@nessisonett Aldi are great aren't they.
My opinions have changed and I think I'll buy day one. Mainly to support Housemarque. They are a developer I've enjoyed for a long time and they deserve a big win after fearing their closure in 2017
I had no interest in it until I seen the developer videos and now it's a day one release for me. I managed to get it from The Game Collection on Fleabay for £62 using the PARCEL10 code for 10% off
I feel less bad about paying $70 knowing there's probably like 2 other PS5 games I'll buy this year.
I’m not paying £70 to play this day one. But I will pay £69.99
Americans aren't getting a bad deal so they should lap it up! I have to take a stand for my UK brethren. I'm buying resi villiage instead. With the closeness of a first party release and promotionally aligned 3rd party release, i'm hoping Sony are watching...
I usually buy PS exclusives D1, but this one isn't worth 70 euros for me. Till there isn't steelbook or czech language i dont feel the need to buy it immediately. Too many games to play
The 'yes, but waiting for a sale' isn't quite accurate to my stance of 'no game is worth the equivalent of $95, when I can get it for the actual price a $70 should cost in the UK (£55) we'll talk.'
@Mergatro1d £64.85 at simply games.
Should be a too close to Resident Evil Village option. I'll pick this up down the line after Resi and Ratchet
I might get it but every time I see the 69.99 price point my brain just can't justify the price for some reason.
Way ahead of ya, already pre-ordered 😉
Yeah, the previews have pushed me over the edge. I'm in!
@Kidfried Aldi are cheap af. I do cook from scratch though so most of that’s meat, veg and various odds and ends like herbs, rice etc.
Yes sir, day one along with R-Type Final 2. I'm not one of those cry babies on the Internet who just cry all day, I actually buy and play games!!!!!
I just don't know what I want to do. I'll wait and read the reviews and maybe watching a little bit of a Let's Play of some of the opening segments before I decide.
I am mostly put off with the arcade gameplay loop. However, Nier: Automata also had some of that as well (a lot more in late-game), but I liked that game.
@Profondo I did this too, I wanted to get it and the closer it got the more I wanted it.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L It's my birthday near the end of may so I've been dropping big hints to the mrs.
Hopefully I'll get Resi as well.
Knowing her, I'll get a pair of socks or a pasta maker.
I will be buying day one as I like rogue lites like everspace.
70 quid is not that bad I had to get a bumper resprayed and other car stuff and that is scary prices.
Erm, how about an option for...
I’d love to buy Returnal at full price, but I can’t find a sodding PS5 to play it on for the life of me?
In the meantime, I’ve opted for the first option, because if a miracle happens and I do happen to find a genuine PS5 for sale, Returnal will be the first game I buy for it.
Sure, but I never pay full price for any title. Ever.
Unless it’s something like Zelda or uncharted I always wait for reviews before buying...
46% the poll doesnt lie and I am in that majority vote. Not that I find this comments section toxic (you're not a bad bunch), from the comments section you would be lead to believe the opposite...
The amount of people refusing to pay full price when it’s clearly a game that appeals to them is pretty annoying when you consider pretty much everyone was universal with the days gone thing that a quality product justifies it. How many people paid full whack for that utter crap and see this as a rip off? Absolute madness when you consider Housemarque’s pedigree.
Intrigued? Yes. Day 1? No. I’ll wait for at least a couple of reviews and perhaps even a sale depending how things are looking post-release.
46% let’s go I’m glad most of us supporting this game day 1 👌.
Needs the option: If I had a PS5, hell yeah!!!
Will be renting.
@JimRyanTriggersYou it really won't.
I bet I'll love it, but not a chance at 70 bangers. Waiting for a sale.
I’m so far behind with games that I never buy new anymore 🤷♂️ Game is probably worth the price though
Yes. Not many new games coming out now and this looks incredible. I do wish it wasn't so expensive though, luckily I have some spare cash put aside for gaming so I can afford it.
@JimRyanTriggersYou Haha not a chance. There'll be a Price drop more than likely yes but it definitely won't be quite as cheap as that.
@Dan_ozzzy189 @JimRyanTriggersYou
I don't know about 6 months or that funky Pound symbol that isn't on my keyboard, but 7 months, Black Friday, it will be $10 somewhere in the US, if only for the weekend. Probably Gamestop as they try to remain relevant. $25 at Best Buy and Walmart, $35 at Target. $35 will be the new $30 since $70 is the new $60.
I would love to support this game....if I had a flipping PS5 to pay it on. Oh and NO I'm not shelling out 70 bucks for a game I can't play right away.
I'll be curious to see the "Did you actually buy Returnal at full price?" poll a week after release and see how it compares to these responses.
Day one like i said after the first reveal.
@everynowandben Yes preorder is made. 🤪
I want to, but my ps5 ssd storage isn't enough and I want to finish at least 2 or 3 of my games backlog. So maybe at the first discount..
I would love to buy this game at full price and support these kind of more risky, non-standard, AAA games.... However, here in Brazil a PS5 game is very, very expensive, and I already made a Resident Evil VIII pre-order this month... so, due to bad timing, I hope Returnal sells a lot, but I cannot put my money where my mouth right now.
@Mergatro1d 😏😏😏😏
Looks stupid.
The poll has exposed how quickly our resolve crumbles in the face of potentially fantastic gaming goodness! Me, I'm seeing it less and less as £70 (£63ish), and more and more as an experience I don't want to miss out on from day 1. Damn you, fleixble, corrupt moral system!
Already pre-loaded on my PS5. I’ll be waiting until after Nier Replicant to play it, but I’m really excited for it regardless.
Definitely.the PlayStation access 50 minutes video wad the icing on the 🎂 cake.word up son
The amount of people who rely on reviews always surprises me. Reviews are very subjective.
Just because the reviewer doesn't like it, doesn't mean you won't, or vice versa.
There's plenty of games that review poorly that I like, and plenty of games that review well that I don't like.
I mean, I don't think £70 is a good price for any game unless it is a limited/special edition, and even then I would have to think about it. But then again, I think the PS5 is too expensive at present, so even if I could get, I wouldn't. Of course, PS5 will probably stay expensive for a few years yet.
@bpomber
They are a good starting point if you still haven't made your mind up, for example if 8 out of 10 reviews say its awful..Well then I kinda more likely to belive it. True it becomes harder when it's gets 6/10 then 9/10 or 7/10 from different sources then it becomes really hard to determine, I just think they are a good starting point on the fence
@hypnotoad same!
@Mintie I get what you're saying, but at the same time any kind of hardware (from consoles to PC CPU's and graphics cards) is priced such that in the UK you pay about the same number of pounds as you'd pay dollars in the US (for example a PS5 is £450 in the UK, whereas the $500 that Americans pay is way less than £450 according to the exchange rate). Sometimes you actually have to pay more pounds than you'd pay dollars in the US - because there's more to pricing than just "apply the exchange rate to whatever country you're selling in" (hence why sites like InstantGaming make a profit, they buy game keys in cheaper countries and sell on to more expensive ones)
I know we're taking software, not hardware here. My is merely that the same role applies to buying anything tech related, it's not merely a con by the PlayStation store
@hypnotoad Both very handy but another new game is always better, Keep dropping those hints.
@MightyDemon82 She ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer.
I'll probabably get The Village by M Night Shyamalan on Blu-Ray !
@hypnotoad 🤣 poor Mrs Hypnotoad!
Where's the option "Not buying because I can't find a PS5?"
I hope all those of you waiting for a sale aren’t expecting a sequel, you scoundrels you 🤣
I’m waiting for a sale. I think it looks great though.
Be real, you need another option in your poll. If I had a ps5, I'd buy it. Since I don't, I'm waiting for a sale, I guess.
@hypnotoad Oh no, not The Village LMAO
It looks well made, but the bullet hell aspect makes it a no for me, after already being iffy on it being a roguelike.
Game looks fantastic but I still don’t have a PS5
I'm thinking I'll wait on a sale. I may bite early, but if I don't buy day one, I probably won't buy until a sale. No point in me paying full price if I don't get it day one.
Yes, but not necessarily waiting for a sale just for when I'm ready to play it. It does look all kinds of awesome though, but I've never clicked with Housemarque's previous games. This does look like their Horizon Zero Dawn however.
Renting it off GameFly.
I’m like 90% sure I’m going to get it, but I want to read some reviews first. Of all the games I’m on the fence about, this one is the most compelling to me. Need more haptic feedback in my life, you know?
I'm laughing because everybody who's moaned about the £70 price point are still going to pay that..so if thats the case why was everybody complaining about it? This poll has proven that almost half the user base here are willing to just bend over and take it...i'll be buying it but only at what i consider a fair price point (£50 or less)..£70 is too much no matter how great a game is..there has to be a standard price point and £70 is not it..this is why we will always be shafted especially on the psn store where there is no packaging and no postal costs but the game can easily have a £10 extra cost for no reason whatsoever other than sony,E.A.,activision etc know that for all your moaning and bitching you will inevitably sell your soul just to be a day 1 purchaser...they love you...i despair at the lack of moral fortitude..
Day one roll on next weekend, when it should drop through the letter box.
@JohnnyShoulder should have gone to spec savers...looks nothing like horizon at all in any shape or form...
@Northern_munkey As that it is a game that is different to what the developer has done in the past. Not that it literally looks like HZD...
Unfortunately its a no from me. Just don't beleive its worth 70 quid. Same issue I'm having with last gen. 15-20 hour game charging full price. Unfortunately I don't have money to burn as saving for a deposit. So I'm having to be very picky about what games I buy. May get it when it drops to 25-30
I have Hitman 3, Planet Coaster & AC: Valhalla to finish yet. I’ve promised myself that this gen I’m not going to end up with a backlog & actually finish games before buying new ones so looks like it’s a no from me.
@danlk1ng not only that Americans don't pay tax on gaming
Not surprising around 40% who visit here are getting it day one. I'm worried about the non ps blog visitors though. I'll wait for reviews and a sale. This isn't the game that will make me shell out $70. If this was a massive game then I get it, but its kind of a tight loop from what I've seen. I do think they've done a great job on presentation and it looks interesting. We'll see.
Cannot choose two options.
I won't support this price point and also I don't care Returnal (that old lady is not my cup of tea)
So far; the only PS5 game I have played on the PS5 was AC, and it was a disappointment. I am really hungry for a next-gen (err, this-gen) experience (there doesn't really seem to be any yet); but I am not certain about day-one for this, although it does look interesting.
Having just spent £33 on disco elysium, my next purchase will be Resident Evil (again less than £50).
This would need to be a AAAAA title to justify spending £70, so a no from me at release but good luck to the devs and hope everyone enjoys it.
It reminds me very much of a 3rd person Metroid Prime.
No bad thing !
Don't have a PS5 anyway, but even if I did, I'd be waiting for this to half-price or less.
I might get it when it's cheaper. A lot cheaper and that's if it doesn't end up in PS+ before it reaches my biting point. Undecided what that will be yet so it depends how good the sales will be to tempt me to buy. It looks interesting but not enough to be in the top of my list.
Tisk! Again you didn't add the "Waiting for it to be a PS+ monthly free game" option - i would have gone for it
@johnny30 I’d never pay £70 for any game but I’d rather have a 15-20 game that’s polished to perfection than a 5,000 hour game like AC Valhalla that’s infested with bugs that will never be fixed.
If the metacritic is above 70 I'm planning on getting it. If there is some unforeseen disaster then I guess I won't, but I think it will be pretty good.
Day one. Pre-ordered as soon as Gamestop started taking them.
Picked waiting on reviews.. but then remembered Biomutant coming out at the end of May.Waiting on Biomutant myself even though it is not a ps5 game. I will pick this up on sale down the road though
@KippDynamite if it doesn't fall off after the part covered in previews, the initial reactions make me think it's going to be more than "over 70"
I want to buy a PS5 god damn it! Where is it....!?
Day one purchase here. Returnal looks amazing, I love anything to do with aliens and sci-fi, big fan of Housemarque, and I personally love challenging roguelikes/lites and fast-paced action in general. This game is right up my alley.
Plus I’m itching for new-gen only content designed specifically for the PS5 instead of all this cross-gen stuff.
@Voltan
I agree.
Rather than a blanket "I'll buy it no matter what," my approach is more "I'll buy it unless there's some Cyberpunk-style surprise."
Housemarque have only mildly disappointed me once (with the controls in Matterfall) so I'm quite confident I'll like Returnal. They've also been through some tough times despite being an excellent dev team so I'd like to support them even though I rarely buy games at release.
Wait for sale for me personally, nothing against Returnal & actually really looking forward to it but Rogue-likes are just not my cup of tea when it comes to paying full price
No way for 70 dollars. Make it 50 then maybe ill consider it.
Easy preorder. Can’t wait.
@bpomber Reviews often contain objective and/or semi-objective information such as game length, features, modes, options, and quality of experience (i.e. bugs/glitches) that are sometimes NDA'd out of previews and impressions. Knowing that kinda stuff before making an expensive purchase matters to me, especially when the game is a new IP and/or from a studio I'm unfamiliar with.
I'm getting Village instead as that's perfectly priced and I'm sure it will have the better story from the two. I wish Returnal nothing but success though, I will buy it at a later date.
Hi ther fellow gamers.
I´m buying Returnal DAY ONE!
That is all.
Cheers, stay safe, stay well and happy gaming to us all
I don't understand the ongoing complaints about cost, did people expect game prices to stay stagnant for another 10 years while the cost of everything around us rises? Games are more expensive than ever to make, employee wages, utilities and overheads, dev costs and hardware etc, is all more expensive then it was 10 years ago. A price increase was inevitable.
The part I struggle with the most in these discussions though, are the individuals who are happy to state they like the look of a game and can afford to buy it, but refuse to pay out of principle, as if they're on some moral crusade to stick it to the man. Consider this for a second, 80 people from a small studio spend thousands of hours of their time for several years creating a game for our enjoyment. And despite it looking like the end result might be something amazing, despite you stating that you're interested in what they've produced, you don't believe that their years of work is worth what you can earn in one day of yours?
No, solely because the game does not interest me. I am not bothered by the price point. If I cannot wait for a sale, such as Horizon Forbidden West, I will gladly pay whatever retail price may be.
Pre-ordered. Come at me tents.
It definitely benefits from being one of very few PS5 native games. I've just caved. I've seen enough to know I'm gonna have a good time. Maybe even £61.06 worth of good time. I've had to move some things around, but I never really used that cottage in the cotswolds anyway.
I would gladly pay full price if only I had a PS5 xd
@God_of_Nowt indeed. It's been £55 too
@Jester1701one be thankful you're in the US. It's £70 here. And it's still more than worth it for a game in 2021.
Absolutely. It looks really good and I haven’t read a bad preview of it yet.
£70 is a lot but it is a full next generation game experience so I’m sold tbh.
Can’t wait to get my hands on this next week.
@The_Real_JMK
You clearly lack reading comprehension. Where did I state that a roll of a dice is worth £70? That would be an argument in favour of pre-orders which I'm not an advocate of. And if the game upon release turns out to be as good as the early feedback suggests, I will support the devs because less than one day of my work is easily worth a thousand of theirs.
Yes, i just pre-ordered after the previews...
I don't pre-order anything. That's a fools game. But this would not have been high on my list even without the price issue. Rouge is not really my thing. I liked hades and dead cells but enough to justify £15 but that's about it.
@Intr1n5ic You are clearly very naive if you think those extra £$10 are going to be directly deposited into the bank accounts of the devs, that's not even remotely accurate or how that works.
so they turned 70 dollars into 70 pounds?
this is the kind of sneaky tactics that companies do, Apple is another one.
The graphics and gameplay look solid, but there doesn't seem to be anything about it that I would enjoy. Very dark, potentially to the point of being a horror game.
@The_Real_JMK
I didn't say a price increase was warranted to financially compensate devs, I said an increase was inevitable in a market where prices haven't changed for over a decade despite rising costs in all areas of development.
My point about the devs is simply how little people value, or even take in to consideration the time they spend on these projects in comparison to how long it would take you to earn the money to purchase it. If you want to wait until it's cheaper I truly don't care, I was specifically addressing those who like to let everyone know that they can afford it, but refuse to pay because of some bs principle.
As for your 125 austalian dollars, according to Google, minimum wage in Australia is $19.83, so a brand new game is just over 6 hours of work, wtf are you crying about?
It's not exciting enough for me to bother with day one, just have such a massive backlog unless it's something I'm incredibly excited about I'll just get it on sale later
I think this PS5 exclusive is a candidate to be release on PC. I still have several games on my backlog and I don't have a PS5 yet.
@4kgk2 46% doesn't qualify as "most of us", dude 😂
@Mad-Vampire £70 is roughly $97. The same applies for the game's price in EU, €80 which is almost $97. The $70 price tag for US customers is also not really true in most of the states as this is price before tax (which is included in the stated prices for £ and € markets). After tax, you are looking at, roughly 10% price increase, so, say $77 which is still nowhere near that highway robbery of $97 that the European (geographical category not political) customers are di** slapped with.
@Intr1n5ic people undervaluing other's work? This cannot be! Well, dude, welcome to planet Earth at the beginning of the 21st century. Be sure to remember to value the infinite hours put by others for you to have that water right in your kitchen. Who cares, dude? They make a product, we buy it if we feel like we want/need it. Valuing someone's work is for employers not for customers.
@Jester1701one in six months it will be 50% off. It is very easy to know when to go for a purchase these days with PC digital storefronts (Steam, Origin, Epic), and those for PS and XB.
If a game is your bread and butter and you can afford the price tag, preorder.
If you can wait but are not really frugal, you should be able to jump in 3 months after release for that 25% off.
If you really can wait and want to spend as little money as possible but still play the game while it is still in the zeitgeist, 6 months and 50% off is your friend.
If you REALLY don't care when you are going to get your hands on the game, wait until it inevitably goes down to dirt cheap (e.g. 10 or 15 monetary units).
Other than that, don't buy current gen console until it is close to their end of life (e.g. a year or two before the next one is released) get them dirt cheap and get all those exclusives for next to nothing.
EDIT: exclusion to the rule - always, always be pre-ordering Nintendo 1st party exclusives with shops that offer some discount. You will never be able to get them cheaper 😂 (as in, new, not pre-owned).
@UrbanPlaystation Deamon Souls PS5? Dude, it still has not been six months since it released, but also not every six month period is the same. When Returnal blows that 6 months candles on its birthday cake, we will be damn near black friday period. It will sell for 35 then no doubt about it.
Of course, this will also depend on how well it continues to sell post release. If, by some miracle, it has steady sales throughout 6 months, they will have no reason to reduce the price.
But see what happened to TLOUp2. It sold like gang busters on release and then shrivelled to nothing real quick. Six months after release it was easy to get it 50% off, and 9 months after release it was in the dumpster sales. And that was Sony's biggest exclusive last year. You think Returnal will maintain its price for longer while being a game in the rogue-lite genre? Nah, dude, it's gonna go down like a Vegas **.
Gawtdamn, that sucks. I've seen prices ranging from $69(US)-$125(Australia?). Is it the import taxes or something?
Didn’t vote. I’d like to play Returnal, but I don’t have a PS5😐
@Intr1n5ic i dont see how standing by your fellow gamers is some kind of ***** principle...not a lot of people even if they can afford £70 for a game can justify the increase in price..its pure greed at the end of the day..for the best part of the ps4's lifetime the average cost of games was £39.99 to £44.99 with the occasional few rising past that (more on the psn store) so really ps5 games should be able to maintain that price point..now if games were gaurenteed to be released 100% perfect,bug free etc then maybe that premium price may be a bit easier to swallow but i doubt it...i have been fortunate enough in life to be able to be able to afford to pursue my chosen hobbies (music,playing a musical instrument,golf and video games) so why does that make me some kind of moral,principle driven crusader? All it shows is that i stand by those less fortunate for whatever reason life has thrown at them...if you think thats wrong then maybe you should take a look at yourself and try and figure out why you think its wrong to stand with people who have already stated the price of new games is too high..
A lot of people look like they're desperate to play something on their PS5s. I'll just keep playing my PS4 games while waiting for it to drop to a better price.
@PhantomMenace84 I have 2tb external hdd but it's a hassle to move games between drive, I want to buy 1tb or 2tb internal nvme drive when ps5 can use it in future firmware.
I'll wait till the Xmas sales as I just will not pay £70 and when Sony realise that the sales are suffering due to this then maybe they will stop being so greedy. Sell lower, sell more and everyone is happy.
@UrbanPlaystation 😄 well, dude, we found us a great reason to return to this comment section in 6 months 😂 let's see together. You could be right, I could be right. Let's just hope the game doesn't end up on ps plus by then 😉
it's good to know that people still have common sense and not supporting the $70 price hike out of blind fanboyism. I can understand the idea behind "supporting the devs movement", if they belong to an indie studios but we're talking about a multi-million dollar corporation in here.
There is no incentive in paying full price at launch because you're getting the worst version of the game and you still have to pay for the "extra content" called DLC. Gaming publishers doesn't make it harder for gamers to wait for sales either, since they will release a definitive edition down the line with all the dlc included while only charging for a fraction of its original price.
@HotGoomba
Yep agreed, I was hoping for more slow paced Dead Space style action when I first heard about it. Will be giving this a miss but hope the people who are into this enjoy it.
I'd probably buy GOW or Horizon for 70, but I can't for a new IP in a genre I don't even know I like. Not a big fan of procedural games. I'd love to try it some day, so I'll probably wait for a discount. I mean, I wouldn't buy FIFA at full price, so I don't see why this is an issue.
I definitely think that a price of 50 could help this gain a little more traction. I feel like it will drop off the charts quickly. But maybe I'm wrong.
Either way, I'll definitely be waiting for reviews.
The £70 price point in the UK is a serious hike, especially compared to the $ equivalent. This is 100% why I opted for the full fat PS5, so I wasn’t stuck with digital only pricing. Picked this up for £59 and can always resell.
The previews have been excellent and entirely gameplay, unlike the carefully curated Night City Wire fiasco for Cyberpunk, so I think there’s little risk this game will bomb.
Re this being 50% on Black Friday - I doubt it but you never know. I’d expect Sony to protect PS5 only game prices through 2021. Maybe 25%?
@The_Real_JMK
You're still replying to me with points that have absolutely nothing to do with what I'm saying, or the reasons why I believe developers should be valued for their work. You've brought up the point about their "wages" so let's focus on that. Are you still earning what you were 10 years ago? Better yet, are you still paying the same for utilities, are you still paying the same for rent, are you still using the same hardware or tools in your profession if everything needs to be upgraded to the latest spec? No of course you're not, but you believe that what was being charged to cover all of that in the previous generation should remain the same in this. By that logic do you think games should cost the same by 2030 as well? Actually don't answer that because I already know the answer.
Yes these people earn a wage for what they're doing, but everything they're doing is dependent on how the end result is received, it's essentially a gamble that requires years of financial investment, and for a smaller development company like Housemarque, a lack of support potentially means they don't get to work again. I'm not suggesting everyone should rush out and buy something from any of these studios if their product is complete buggy garbage, but if what they produce receives a positive response from critics, and you're both genuinely interested and in a position to afford it, choosing not to is pathetic.
Pre ordered already. Let’s go!
@bpomber The people who have played it already are reporting they have had a ton of fun with it.
Preordered and half downloaded!
@everynowandben I think anybody with a grudge against the game and price once hearing of the poll can influence it and water it down.
@Northern_munkey Meanwhile all of the best games of the generation are pretty much given away free. Should Sony not make a return(al) on their investment? 🤣
I predict there will be a lot of people buying it under the impression that it's a cool looking sci-fi third-person shooter. Then as soon as they discover that it's actually a roguelite (dying sets you back to the beginning and levels are procedurally generated) the regret will kick in esp with the £70 price.
@Intr1n5ic Sony just needs to keep throwing out banger after banger and supporting them well and I suspect their Nintendo-like approach will pay dividends in the medium-long term.
@Northern_munkey
What fellow gamers are you standing by exactly, the 8% of this poll? And why do you believe the industry should be able to maintain the same price point going forward when the cost of everything involved in it's production has risen?
Playing video games isn't a necessity, it's something we all choose to enjoy doing in our spare time with our disposable income. Obviously I'm not being critical of anyone who's not in a position to do that on day one, I'm being critical of those, like yourself, that like to advertise they can but refuse to because they support those less fortuitous than themselves. Give me a break.
In your own words, "I have been fortunate enough in life to be able to afford to pursue my chosen hobbies, music, playing a musical instrument, golf and video games, so why does that make me some kind of moral, principle driven crusader? All it shows is that i stand by those less fortunate for whatever reason life has thrown at them."
Do you stand by the financial accessibility of your fellow man in all of your hobbies, or do you like to pick and choose? Are you down your local golf course arguing for why Johnny crazy golf can't afford to play where you do?
@KayOL77 good play on words..🤣..the best games of the ps4 generation are given away free...
@Intr1n5ic I think you may have to just agree to disagree bud. Personally I love what Sony is doing and their commitment to top produced excellently playing games is utterly commendable. I will always reward them. I value this industry and I value Sony in it.
@KayOL77 yeah I know, you're right. I agree with you and I'm more than happy to continue supporting the studios that deserve it.
No, I won't! Cause I don't have a ps5 yet😭😭
@Intr1n5ic not at all...i dont have the greatest job or the greatest salary but i grew up under harsh conditions which taught me to be prudent with what i have and to appreciate and not take things for granted..for a long time my wife and myself have struggled to make ends meet so i can appreciate what i have and what others dont.now i am in my late 40's and have a modest income so i can kick back and enjoy what i have worked hard to achieve and i have to justify that to you? My comments were never intended to rub things in other peoples faces or to enflame anybody and if you have issues with that then thats your problem and nobody elses..dont come at me with your insecuritys and chip on your shoulder..show some respect to other people and accept their right to stand by their principles..nobody else has had any issues with the 2 times i mentioned in previous posts about being able to afford £70 games...congrats you are the first person i choose to ignore...
Returnal looks great but I am not a fan of roguelikes, so I won't be buying it.
Preloaded already. Really looking forward to it.
@JapaneseSonic No, I saved for a year. I don’t want to then have to save for a few months just to get one game.
@bpomber I dont really use reviews as a definite,I use it as a guide and take what i want from it ,I've bought 6 and 7 rated titles because I like the genre
I was going to wait until it was on sale but all the previews going on about how good it is changed my mind, so i got off shopto. If its not my type of game etc I can then sell it on.
P.S. The lack of PS5 games also helped in this decision.
Day one to keep me entertained then onto Resi 8👍👍
What I always find odd is how many space games there were in the early days and how few good ones there are now (with the exception of stuff like No Man's Sky and Elite: Dangerous I suppose; YMMV) so if Returnal knocks it past the stratosphere I'll be genuinely impressed. I'll still probably buy it when it's on sale though, same as everything else - then a decent amount of actual trustworthy reviews will exist and any major bugs would hopefully have been squashed in the first few big update patches that all big games seem to have these days.
I'm actually gonna rent it first as Roguelikes are not usually my thing. If I wind up liking it though, I am def buying at full price. This game was a risk, and we really can't complain about PlayStation not wanting to take risks if we don't support them when they do.
Day one playing this game I can’t wait
@Intr1n5ic You should never tell people how to spend their hard earned money. The developers may have spent hundreds of hours of work to produce these games but it's the same with the average consumer who spent countless hours of work just to make ends meet. They are entitled to spend their money in whatever they need or want and no one else. Just because they have an extra $70, it doesn't mean they should spend it to buy games when they could use it for far more important things.
You're single purchase will never move units. The overall sales of the game ultimately depends on whether the gaming studios did an excellent job to garner enough hype and positive reviews that will entice gamers to buy their game at full price.
I honestly don't care about the price too much. I've spent more than that on games in the past. I care more about the fact that I'm not sure if I'll like it or just feel pummeled by it, LOL, so I'm waiting on reviews.
@BrainHacker “Your single purchase will never move units.” 🤔
@KayOL77 Your $70 will never cover the cost of game development. Gaming publishers earned profits from the volume of units sold. $70 is the highest allowable price they can sell their game to maximize returns and if the game is failing to sell at this price point, then they will lower it to capture the full market.
Reading reports from people who are currently playing the game that it's punishingly hard. This game is going to anger and annoy a lot of people; those unfamiliar with roguelikes/roguelites are in for a rude awakening.
Yea, I'll buy it at full price. I don't mind a $10 difference and I get the impression Sony is going to follow the Nintendo way of doing things. I don't expect a price drop or big sale for first party this gen, not until a greatest hits program drops. I don't want to wait 5 years, lol.
@truerbluer There is always Pokémon snap on Switch out the same day for those who don't like a challenge.
@nessisonett gotta eat
A bullet hell Dark Souls? Yes please. As @get2sammyb said, the previews pushed me over the edge. I'll spend money to support devs if the product is good...and this is sounding great!
I can't wait to let the DualSense tickle my fingers while I listen in 3D sound! This is what next gen is all about!
@PhantomMenace84 I forgot the total number, I have a couple of AAA games and indies, the big one is divisions 2 (about 100gb), days gone, jedi fallen order, ghost, genshin impact, and others 10gb indies.
Its already installed on my PS5...
@RavenWolfe81 Imagine waiting 5yrs to save $10....
$70 is too much for a game. Luckily I got it from Best Buy for only $15.
@lacerz Yeah, the stuff I'm hearing about it likely being as challenging as Dark Souls has really put me off this title. My game backlog is substantial, and I have very little free time. I can't devote 'unemployed' amounts of energy to a video game.
@DISC0KINGZ
Yeah, the challenge of the game sounds a bit off-putting...but something universally being proclaimed as truly "next gen"? 60 FPS, Ray-Tracing, 4K, HDR, full DualSense support, 3D audio? I'm in!
If the reviews are good, I'll buy it when it gets to 50€
@Arugula It's hardly been barren. That is demonstrably false. There have been at least 20 great games to play. Not sure how anyone could say that seriously.
@truerbluer All the levels are hand made but the order they appear in is procedural. Also in the off chance somebody makes a blind purchase of this game and are unaware it's a rougue-lite will be okay with it because of it's top notch quality.
I'm waiting for reviews and a sale. This isn't a game in a franchise I already support, and the $70 price tag is just too steep.
Especially when I've never played a game like this before, this would be my first time.
Hopefully the game turns out to be amazing and gets a sequel, depending on what happens in the story's ending.
I'll buy it when I get a PS5. Till then I'll watch it. I adamantly refuse to buy from anyone that isn't Sony/retailer.
@Intr1n5ic it doesnt matter what minimum wages are in australia, the point is and also the reality is, $70us is $91 au, so yeah $100, i can cop that, $125 i will not pay. every 4 games i pay for is a free game to americans at full price, how is that a fair deal? it not. now i live in melbourne, i have a mortgage, im in a suburban area 40 mins away from the cbd and my house repayments alone are $450 a week, i bought 8 years ago, minimum house price now in my area is $500k for a 25 year old home. repayments would be $550 a week minimum, just because $19 is our minimum wage doesnt make psn prices right. oh petrol, $1.50 a litre, that $6 a gallon. our daily cost of living is much higher then america. until you know how the economy of aus works, you cant just go by the minimum wage. thats just dumb. reality is, what i buy of psn is EXACTLY the same as the americans do, yet we pay an extra 25% for what reason?
40 hour work week, $20/h = $800, minus tax, around $700 left, $500 on house repayment, $200 left, now $200 has to cover gas, electricity, petrol, insurance, phone, food and daily living cost, yet you think its ok for aus to pay 25% more. clearly you have no idea on reality of australians and just spread words of your imagination.
I would buy it day one, but I do not have PS5 so it sucks. Enjoy playing!
@Roamin I love how you're educating me on my lack of knowledge regarding the cost of living in Australia, but then go on to state how your cost of living is so much higher than a country you probably know nothing about. What state are you referencing when you mention America, or is it just a blanket statement that covers them all?
Average rent in New York for a studio apartment, literally a single room, not a house in the suburbs, is $2300. Their minimum wage is $15 before tax. You do the math and then get back to me about how a lower cost of living applies to them. That's just rent, do you have any understanding of just how ***** up their healthcare system is?
It always makes me laugh when people talk about how unfair things are compared to other markets because they know how to use a currency converter, but can't take a moment to think about just how much better you have it in so many ways.
My point on how long it takes you to earn enough to buy a game was not me stating you can afford it, it was highlighting the bigger picture. You now have to work 6 hours instead of 5 to accumulate the cost of something that's not essential or even a necessity.... oh no the world is ending.
In my country the price with tax is
$81
That's why i will not buy it until sales
Unfortunately Sony did a bad decision by increasing the price 👎🏻
I don't care if it's pretty. It's a $70 rogue like. That's insane. I can play any Mystery Dungeon game for a fraction that to get my fill of self-loathing with a AAA polish, let alone the myriad indies.
I'm not supporting £70 games and I'm disappointed that so many responses showed that they will. If £70 games are a success they'll only try and increase them even more.
No chance. £70 for a game that I might end up frustrated with and hating. Count me out. Disappointed that so many people don't seem to care...
There aren't many good games I could justify spending 70 quid on to be honest, let alone an unknown quantity like this.
If this is the standard price point going forward then I won't be buying much at all on release at full price... I'll be waiting a few months for a significant price reduction. Digital purchases are a definite non starter at this price too.
I can just imagine my despair if I'd bought Sekiro digitally for 70 quid...
It’s not illegal to wait for a sale...Especially when you want to buy RE8 and Rift Apart too, cause they all look very good.
