After the desperately poor WWE 2K20, publisher 2K Sports made the unprecedented move to take a year away from wrestling. The series will return this year, however, with WWE 2K22 – announced during WrestleMania overnight. Specific details are still, of course, forthcoming – but here’s a first look at Rey Mysterio in action.
The series has been in a strange spot ever since the departure of long-time developer Yuke’s; NBA 2K developer Visual Concepts took the lead on WWE 2K20, but clearly didn’t have enough time to create a functional product. With a year away to lick its wounds, the hope is that WWE 2K22 will be a return to form – no platforms have been officially announced just yet, although there is speculation it may be PlayStation 4 only.

My exceptions are extremely low.
They need to drop the simulation aspect of these games, it's a sport with predetermined outcomes and athletes who are acting, so they should put more fun and exaggeration.
They also need to simplify the actual controls, I couldn't get used to 2k19, the Smackdown Vs Raw era was probably the best for controls.
I have Retromania Wrestling for my wrestling game fix till AEW releases their game.
Ultimate warrior.mr perfect.bret the hitman hart.demolition.legion of doom.jake the snake roberts.razor ramon.that will be amazing if they was included.word up son
@playstation1995 aren't they included every year? Especially since WWE know that they haven't anyone iconic since John Cena.
The trailer shows me they’ve learnt nothing. We have had years of rubbish nothing teasers which end up being attached to a nothing game. I really thought they’d show something to prove the year off was worth the wait. It’s Groundhog Day
@DarthAmmii. Not everyone i mention is on that list.and i haven't watch wwf aka wwe for a long time.the 1980.and 1990s and early 2000s was amazing.but i like the 1980s and 1990s better.word up son
I honestly think I’ve played more WWF No Mercy than the 2K games and that came out a couple of months after I was born.
I didn't expect to hear a NF song here xD
@DarthAmmii you're partly right. The outcome is predetermined but wrestling is by no means fake. Remember you cant fake a broken neck. It takes years to perfect the craft. Nailing perfect moves should be made to be done
Hopefully it's a functional game!
@playstation1995 A big focus on 2006 and back is the only way I could be interested.
@Crazybuttocks198 I didn't say it was fake, I said the athletes who perform also have to act. But because the WWE is for all intents and purposes a soap opera, they shouldn't treat it like any other sport, they should play up the smoke and mirrors and lean into the campiness. But I am someone who will gladly watch any 2000s Heat over any single match that happens these days, I can't stand wrestling as it currently is. Who wouldn't prefer to watch Rikishi bodypop over seeing Finn Balor perform that stupid foot stomp again.
That is the most lackluster video name I've ever seen.
@DarthAmmii fair enough, got a bit misunderstood. WWE isn't the same anymore, there aren't enough charismatic guys as there were 20 years ago. There still a few good matches lately but not on Raw or Smackdown
The last one I played, 19 maybe, was absolutely killed by loading times. Every menu selection was greeted with a longer wait than loading a new game of the Witcher.
As a wrestling fan it is probably a bit weird that I have never bought a 2K game. If this reviews OK I might take the plunge
Just give me an in depth GM mode and I'm happy.
@Crazybuttocks198 It's unfortunate but one of my favourite matches is Kurt Angle Vs Chris Benoit, an absolute masterclass in both athleticism and in-ring storytelling. But it will always be weird for me to watch any of Chris' matches because he was my favourite during the post Attitude era, so when I heard what happened it did hurt in a strange way.
@playstation1995 your forgot Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Bushwacker Bros 👌
@AhabSpampurse. True.rick the model martel.koko b ware.dino bravo.the rockers.the fabolous rougeau brothers.million dollar man.etc.word up son
Just remake here comes the pain. None of this slowed down, simulation tat. Just a straight up arcade slapfest. I want to be climbing the scenery on the stage and dropping legdrops from the top. Hardcore 30 minute falls count anywere matches were you lost because you thought you could land an elbow from a helicopter even though you knew it would ruin you. A game that physically demands you have a multitap so you can all quietly agree to shoe that one mate in the second that bells goes.
Thats all i ask.
@TheCollector316 says PlayStation 4 only, I think they mean it won't be next gen. So will be xbox too.
Cant imagine Sony bothered with exclusivity on it.
Shame if it is last gen only, they made a special next gen NBA this year. If they managed that with one year of build, 2 years should allow a next gen version here too.
I, as others said, just hope they go down the more arcade route. If I want sim, I'll get fire pro. I want good mechanics, simple but fun game play, a good GMmode, a removal of BS stuff like "kick out at 2, and lose via count out" which ruin the career mode.
I just want fun. I've not enjoyed a wrestling game since the Ps2 days, and even then games like DefJam were better than the WWE offerings.
Looks cool but with this ill be waiting on a full review. My favorite is here comes the pain on PS2 they never reached that greatness ever again.
Hopefully they learned from their mistakes from 2K20. Guess we will see.
@Splat Expectations you mean?
@Crazybuttocks198 I mean, you 100% can fake a broken neck if it's for storyline purposes, the same way you can fake being killed in a limo explosion...
The last game was iconic in the worst way possible, it made for some hilarious watching of youtube videos
@DarthAmmii I would gladly watch Finn over Rikishi. Lol.
Why does 2k use the same F'ing style of music for nba and wwe every f'ing year. Its always a trash hip hop song with some stupid distorted guitars that aren't even real guitars anyway.
I honestly hate 2k :@ so glad I stopped buying these games years ago.
If anyone does like wrestling games I suggest checking out Fire Pro Wrestling World while not graphically impressive the customization is on another level plus its fun as hell.
@Spyroescape I love hip hop, and only like the occasional rock song. My favourite rock group is Nickelback so that should say more than I need to, lol. But wrestling and rock/metal just go so well together, Marilyn Manson's 'Beautiful People' is still vivid in my memory, purely because of the hours I put in to 'WWF: Shut your Mouth'.
@DarthAmmii I listen to all kinds of different genres and there have been some times I've heard hip hop music in wrestling and it went really well. With that said, I completely agree with you. The earlier 00s with the infusion of Nu Metal music into the WWF was a match made in heaven. The Shut your mouth intro was a amazing and the Wrestlemania 17, Rock vs Austin promo package video with the Limp Bizkit song was a masterpiece!
