Sunset Overdrive was always one of Microsoft's most interesting exclusives during the Xbox One era. Developed by Insomniac Games while it was still independent, it's a highly stylised open world action game that became something of a cult hit. Of course, as mentioned, the studio was brought into Sony's ranks following its excellent work on Marvel's Spider-Man, which left the promising Sunset Overdrive IP hanging in the air.
Interestingly, Insomniac hasn't forgotten about it. The studio owns the IP, and has just recently renewed the trademark on the title (as spotted by Nibel). Now, we doubt this action means anything in particular — we wouldn't jump to conclusions about any impending announcements. However, it does make us think the Burbank developer isn't finished with the game just yet — especially when you consider its director rejoined Insomniac earlier this year.
Again, companies update things like trademarks and patents all the time, so this isn't anything new. Still, we wouldn't be too surprised if Insomniac was to revive Sunset Overdrive in some way on PS5. The studio is already split into multiple teams, and we could easily imagine a small subset of the firm working on bringing the title to PS5 (and maybe PS4) in between larger projects. This is all just speculation on our part, though.
Anyway, what do you think? What might Insomniac do with Sunset Overdrive moving forward? Does this trademark renewal mean something's cooking, or is the studio simply getting its paperwork done? Discuss in the comments section below.

Microsoft still owns the rights to the original game, Insomniac (and Sony) only own the IP. So we may see a sequel, or a successor of sorts, but I doubt we will ever see a port of the original game.
Yep its happening.i always wanted to play sunset overdrive.always felt like infamous with guns.and the graphics is cool also.n.i.c.e. gameplay.now give me a resistance trilogy remake and i will be a happy PlayStation g.o.a.t word up son
I'm just happy to see the possibility of anything to do with this IP coming back, cause honestly the original had a lot of potential, and was pretty unique and fun for it's time, It's just the fact that it came out at the wrong time and on the wrong platform lol
@Octane Only the Publisher Rights which expire (Remedy got them back for AW in 2019)
Eeh I'd rather Insomniac leave this IP wasn't one of their better efforts much rather Resistance get brought back than this
It would be cool I guess.
I'd prefer a reboot of Resistance though, and Fuse.
I'd definitely be interested in this, one of few last gen games that I was always a bit jelly of it being only on xbox
Does this play anything like Sega’s Jet Set Radio?
That would be awesome but highly unlikely. If I recall correctly sales were pretty bad despite all the good reviews.
@Octane Stop making up rules that don't exist.
Either it is a timed exclusive, or the license belongs to a studio but you cannot have the right just on 1 games of a license, except if the game contains copyright (which isn't the case here).
Personally, I'd rather see them make a new IP or go back to Resistance than develop another Sunset Overdrive.
@Kratos-sensei pretty sure you can. Look at Bayonetta with Nintendo helping funding it (or possibly Dead Rising 3). Any deal can be made between a publisher and a manufacturer. Whether or not it’s the case here, who knows, but it’s possible.
Maybe a PC port 🤷♂️
Edit
Oh right . I didn't know it was on PC so it could be coming to PlayStation indeed.
I'd rather a new more mature and more ambitious game though.
I played it on pc gamepass, it's okay if somewhat basic open world game, I prefer insomniac focus on their playstation ip like resistance, ratchet & clank, and of course spider-man. I don't mind a basic 4K & 60 fps port though.
@IonMagi Depends on the contract I'd guess.
Would be good to see resistance back.
I maybe wrong but Sony for now does not have a top AAA in-house studio working on a big campaign single play FPS like resistance.
While it's nothing much, I do hope Sony considers on bringing the IP to Playstation platforms. Sunset Overdrive was one of the better Xbox One exclusives, and it's a shame it didn't do well for Microsoft.
Never played it. Would totally play it if they released it on PS4/5.
Remaster it and give it away free on ps plus for ps5,the only problem i had with it was, that on the xbox it looked like everything was smeared in vaseline,ps5 would rectify this.
@Octane that ran out ages ago,all rights now belong to Sony.
Excellent game.
I always thought it would’ve been more at home on PlayStation rather than Xbox.
I enjoyed it and I hope Playstation gets the sequel this time. I can just imagine the reaction of the Xbox guys if that was to happen.
One of the two games on X1 that I would like to play.
Other is Rare Replay...
Soo either we getting sunset overdrive 2 on the xbox or sunset overdrive on the ps5?
A port would be nice, but I'm unsure how Microsoft's exclusivity contract holds up here.
The game was always about 80% of the way towards being good. It was MUCH clunkier to play than Ratchet and Clank, and that was almost entirely because I hated that the melee attack was B instead of X.
Sunset Overdrive is one of the only games I've ever hated without playing it. Every trailer for it was so obnoxious and cringe that it actually annoyed me. It looked pretty fun to play though.
@RubyCarbuncle They are raging pal.
https://www.purexbox.com/news/2021/05/wait_did_sony_just_trademark_the_sunset_overdrive_ip
@patronmacabre "It was MUCH clunkier to play than Ratchet and Clank, and that was almost entirely because I hated that the melee attack was B instead of X."
You could have created a game profile for it and swapped those two buttons around. I do it for Dead Island, Doom 3, and Halo Wars to make them much more intuitive to play.
MS own the publishing rights for the Original release. Sony (insomniac) own the IP and trademark. They are free to "Remaster" this title and release it as a new title. The IP case can be viewed here: https://tsdr.uspto.gov/documentviewer?caseId=sn85983126&docId=ER120200106063446#docIndex=0&page=1
I bought in on the Xbox One all those years ago based on the trailers. I just don’t see what the fuss was about, nice that people seem to love it, but for me it was trash. Tried to play it again a few years ago and got as far (I think) as the arcade base and gave up again. The gun play and camera killed it for me.
I'm sure your comment was meant to be ironic, @Richnj after all, 13 minutes after you posted your comment there was just one response on the Xbox site, which reads as follows in its entirety:
Sunset overdrive was awesome. Since I probably won’t get a ps5 I will definitely miss out on this one which sucks. (If it’s a sequel)
Raging...
Damn Insomniac, take a chill pill already. 😆
Now that I have a Xbox, I played this game for a bit and....it's an Insomniac game alright! Super fun and fast paced!
sunset overdrive was a 7/10 game at best so PlayStation gamers you aint missing much. Everything it does has been done better and more interesting in other games such as spiderman and infamous
@Richnj I don't like Pure Xbox and I don't go there anymore but in fairness the people commenting there seem alright, they don't seem angry to me. If your statement was sarcastic my original comment was only meant as a joke.
Bought this game Target clearance for probably $8 while I owned an Xbox One for 6 months, also purchased at Target clearance w/ the plan of trading it in for a Switch, which I sort of did, but not exactly.
Game was a lot better than I thought it was going to be, as @playstation1995 correctly surmised, it's Infamous, but w/ a Ratchet & Clank skin. But all weapons, I don't recall getting any powers, but he travels like he does. But it's colorful.
I've always thought, and will always continue to think, this game would have done MUCH better on PS4 than Xbox. It doesn't belong on Xbox. It's not a FPS, it's crazy cartoony looking, and the guy is Deadpool sassy. (Though I never thought that before now as I played the game years before watching Deadpool.) Whereas on PS5 you get both the Infamous and R&C fans.
If you are interested, currently on Gamepass PC, you can sign up for $1 for a month, game wasn't short, but it wasn't long either, maybe 25-30 hours? FYI you can use your DS4 on PC via bluetooth, it works pretty well. As they say, don't knock it till you've tried it.
Don't know how well it holds up, that was 4 years ago, and I've never played Cyberpunk or Red Dead or AC, Infamous and R&C and Uncharted, GoW is about as action as I get. And NO FPS.
Just rewatched the trailer. It is Deadpool the cheap knock-off. 🤷♂️
Not sure where all the hate for this game is from. It was fantastic, a bizarre mix of Dead Rising, Tony hawks pro skater and Doom with great humour and style.
Was it perfect? No far from it. But it was a hell of a lot of fun.
@trev666. Since when a 7 is bad.what are you talking about.7 is a really good score.you make no sense at all.word up son
It would be super cool!
I'm playing the first one on my PC on and off and I'm really enjoying it.
It has good ideas but it's a bit jank, it would be awesome if a sequel improved on its mechanics!
Would love to see this come to Playstation
@rjejr. I agree with you playa. Its a really cool game.no doubt.word up son
@BansheeNorn Since Sony owns it and since the MLB has nothing to do with it, it will not be going to Xbox!🤦♂️
@playstation1995 I never said it was bad its an average game 7 is an average score.
why has every game got to be judged as good or bad the truth is usually somewhere in between
This was such an underrated gem of a game. I’d love a sequel.
@trev666 "why has every game got to be judged as good or bad the truth is usually somewhere in between"
"why does every THING got to be judged as good or bad the truth is usually somewhere in between"
B/c humankind is broken and no longer capable of thought, good vs evil is all it's got. For everything. "Best" or "sux" is all we got. I blame the sacred-profane dichotomy promoted by religion but I'm an immoral agnostic so my thoughts don't count. 🤷♂️
@playstation1995 I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to have fun, look at pretty things, and has a sense of humour. Which not everyone does. But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I don't like much. Really should have been a PS game, I have no idea how it wound up on Xbox.
@playstation1995 I don’t get the love for resistance. I never really liked the games but then I probably didn’t give them a proper chance
This is one of my favorite games from last gen. Right behind God of War. It sucked that only 7 people had Xboxes when this game launched.
@Dezzy70 there have been rumors of a project like that in Guerilla after they hired a bunch of Siege devs, and I know they're supporting what sounds like a shooter project from that new studio made up of Bungie devs. But I know what you mean. That genre is (justifiably, I think) on the back burner for Sony right now.
@Boucho11. My favorite fps games ever.word up son
@trev666. No its not 7 is a good score.6 is ok.5 is average.word up son
It's hard to start new IPs, so even this basic step is still smart.
That also why Sony should have ordered a sequel to Days Gone.
Not everything catches fire right away, look at the games based on the Neir world.
lol insomniac has no time for b-tier franchises like this. they will be working on spiderman for the next 10 years in tandom with either ratchet and clank or a new IP. sunset overdrive was a neat game, but it was met with mixed reaction and not a keeper. insomniac would likely revive resistance before it touches sunset overdrive again.
That's ok Sony can have Sunset Overdrive. I will be to busy playing the next Elder Scrolls on my Xbox to worry about Sunset Overdrive 2.
@SoulChimera I got an XBox One S back in the day, in part because of this game (and in part for the UHD Blu-Ray, which even the PS4 Pro didn't support for some reason, though Microsoft doesn't know how to make decent media players).
I never got very far into it. It seemed like it had a lot of promise, I just kept dropping out of it before I got much past the intro/tutorial. I don't know why, it just never clicked with me.
@RobN That would be on which platform - the XBox Series Two ZX?
I had both consoles and i actually think sunset overdrive was the only xbox exclusive game i played all generation.
@playstation1995 You would be surprised how many say a solid 7 game is trash i play Dynasty Warriors thats a solid 7 game and love them stupid fun messy not buggy but messy. Sometimes its great to play these games and have a blast then again a 6 can also be fun.
@Flaming_Kaiser. A 5 could be good also.word up son
I've always hoped it would come to Playstation eventually. We obviously don't know the terms of MS's publishing deal, it may well be for just last gen, in which case Sony can just do it for PS5.
I'd be surprised if they do a sequel though.
I found Sunset Overdrive so irritating and obnoxious. It tried way too hard to be cool.
@Kratos-sensei Titanfall 1 and 2? That can definitely be a thing. Do you really think lawyers lack the capacity or know-how to write such a deal?
@playstation1995 There are enough "terrible" games i like.
I would love to see a Dark Cloud sequel also a 7/8 game.
Sunset Overdrive was vital to the development of Spider Man, and deserves a second chance.
Love the game, but honestly if Insomniac is going to revive an older IP, I'd prefer Resistance. A great series that has been dormant far too long.
@rjejr It end up on Xbox cause Insomniac wanted to keep the IP, and Sony sounded like they wasn't having that.
@Floki That actually sounds like a good explanation, from the Insomniac legal departments. But someone from their marketing dept should have been like:
"So, you want to sell a very colorful over the top 3rd person shooter to Xbox One gamers who enjoy games like Halo and Gears of War? Are you sure about that?"
I guess the success of Rare Replay confused them or something?
@rjejr Sure. If you only want to think about every thing from a business standpoint.
Insomniac have been a studio for 27 year, and they've done nothing but only work on IPs that they don't owned... Some time it not about whether or not it will sell. Some time you just want work on something you own.
@rjejr - Insomniac Games originally approached Sony about Sunset Overdrive for PS4 under the condition that Insomniac Games gets to own the IP so they could have at least one IP they could call their own, but Sony denied them that right, Sony wanted to own the IP. As such Insomniac Games approached Microsoft who agreed to their conditions. The whole situation is now rather ironic since Sony now own Insomniac Games and the Sunset Overdrive IP.
@johncalmc I have that with every Borderlands game. I hated them when I played them, too.
@JustPlainLoco "The whole situation is now rather ironic since Sony now own Insomniac Games and the Sunset Overdrive IP."
I do like me some irony. Thanks for the recap. 👍
@Floki - See "irony". 😎
Fantastic game, and fantastic example of what Insomniac does best. TBH, I like it more than Spiderman. Spidey was "ok" but excessively safe, and therefore restrained and repetitive. Insomniac is best when taking risks and trying things that may not work. Sunset has the same feel as an R&C game.
@rjejr The whole "Xbox is only FPS" meme died 2 gens ago. Get back on your rocking chair and yell at Atari for messing everything up!
Seriously, though I think they game was "very Xbox" - it did badly because X1 died before it launched (until it was resuscitated in 2018.) The game performed about as well as it would have on Vita, because it launched on a console as doomed as Vita.
@NEStalgia It would have done much better on Vita based on the Japanese install base alone. I think they STILL sell more Vita in Japan every week than every Xbox model combined. If only at whatever passes for yard sales, eBay and Craig's List in Japan.
"The whole "Xbox is only FPS" meme died 2 gens ago."
The meme may have died, but the reality remains. 😎
@rjejr Vita Stomping XB in Japan is true enough, though I don't know about Sunset selling well there even if it were on Switch, which might as well be government provided as a utility there at this point.
The whole "Xbox only has FPS" thing came from the days on 360 where most of the 1st party games were FPSes. We know that's not true anymore because MS hasn't released any games. Well, ok, they released more games than Nintendo that had only the tarted up mobile gatcha game that wins every award and sales chart and not much else.
Seriously though, if we ignore Halo and Killzone, MS and Sony have about as many 1st party FPSes as each other, which is to say, basically none. The CoD shooter crowd is arguably more PS-focused than XB these days, anyway.
@NEStalgia CoD being bigger on PS I'll buy, b/c it's CoD, but seriously, what zany colorful games get the Xbox fan base excited? How removed are they from Kinect? Sony I think still has more variety even if MS has bought up all the Indies.
Xbox has Halo, Forza, Gears of War as the big games. Where are the equivalent games for Astrobot, Ratchet & Clank, Knack. Knack has 2 games.
While the AVERAGE age of gamers, and other demographics, probably skews similarly towards white, 28 & male on both PS and Xbox (not counting the kiddie console) I feel pretty confident PS has the range, more kids, more non-white, more LGBTQ. Not only or all, but more.
Where do you think games like Spyro and Crash sell better? If you're buying an Xbox as your primary and only console you don't care about color or 2D or 3D platformers, you care about violence and sports. Preferably violent sports, though I wouldn't be surprised if golf sold well, that's weirdly manly. I don't know how, it just is.
It is possible with all of it's recent acquisitions that Xbox could become even more diverse than PS, when it's even more of just a PC for Gamepass hooked up to your tv than it is now, but that's a couple of years away yet. When Sunset Overdrive released it should have released on PS.
@rjejr I think PS is the very last place I'd go looking for zany colorful games at this point. Sure, a few outliers remain, LBP, Astrobot, R&C, but when I think PS, I used to think zany and colorful. Now I think various shades of gray and black with brooding emo characters and sombre, depressing stories. Every game is a Depeche Mode album brought to life. Only Sony could turn a rouguelike SHMUP arcade game into a dreary, dark narrative hellscape with a gritty protagonist.
Similarly with XB I used to think of teen angst. Duke Nukem's bravado crossed with more guns than a Cabella's catalog in an Arkansas trailer park distilled into a little green box. Now I think of it as basically "gaming" in a generalized sense, the way I used to think of SNES back in the day. No single theme or mood, just a big old library of games of every stripe. When I think of Nintendo, I hold my wallet and sob uncontrollably for hours while humming the SMB theme between the tears before yelling at a cloud.
I don't think it pays to look at last gen though. Yeah, XB had a dearth of games to lean on because Matrick was an idiot that fired everyone and closed the studios. PS had a few games that weren't emo, but they decreased over the gen, and they've since closed a lot of the studios that produced them. Ratchet is ok for now. LBP got it's one outing, though we haven't heard of great sales, and I wonder if we'll get another ever now that Astrobot is the new mascot. We'd have to look back at 360 that had B&K:N&B and Conker, a bunch of JRPGs, etc. And PS3 that had all sorts of experimental fun games all over the place. And going forward we have this sort of weird crossover where PS5 is shaping up to be the best Xbox ever, and Xbox is replacing Nintendo as the all purpose for all ages console, while Nintendo somehow outsells them both by doing whatever it is exactly that Nintendo does these days even though I can't even figure out what that is or who's buying it up so much. Knack is dead and buried. If PS5 were announcing Knack-like games right and left I'd be with you, but my expectation is after R&C we'll see nothing but emo for years. I cry black tears. I bleed darkness. I play Playstation, etc. etc.
Spyro and Crash? You mean the games Activision just shattered the studio behind so they could sell more CoD on Playstations? Yeah, those games sold amaaaaazing, apparently Well, ok, only PS fans could love Crash. It was a terrible game in the 90's and it's a terrible game today. It stands testament to the fact that any and all dislike I bear toward Naughty Dog has nothing to do with their Sony ownership. They were terrible at game design before Sony.
All joking aside, though, it really is an outdated view of xb that recalls a different era, for sure. I was there for it, I remember it, and yeah, it really was like that by and large. But most of the audience that was like that actually moved to PS4 after Matrick screwed up. He made Xbox better by making the stereotypical xbox fan become PS fans. They're all here now. And it shows. PS now consists of angry old-school PS fans and all the 360 bros that migrated. The xb fandom these days seems to mostly be jaded old Nintendo and PS fans that misses gaming being gaming. Like you. Heck, I see more praise for Knack in XB conversations than I ever do in PS conversations.
@NEStalgia You make a lot of good points, as usual, about the consoles, their games, and the companies, but as much as stereotypes may be a bad thing, they are still a thing for a reason, so I'm still going to say that while the majority of both PS and Xbox fan bases may be the same - see CoD and Madden sales - PS has the broader umbrella of the 2. Not as broad as Nintendo's and it assisted living facility Wii Sports machines and kids building Labo at summer camp, but more broad than Xbox. And it's that "more broad" group that would have purchased more of SO on PS4 than X1 six years ago. Which was my point. 😉
@rjejr Haha, well, fair enough that 6 years ago xb was a very different animal than xb in the past 3 years. Back then I was in the chorus declaring ms would be out of consoles this gen. Amazing how competent leadership can raise a sunken ship and gold it (with sufficient cash infusion)
@NEStalgia 6 years ago
6 years ago Nintendo was the Wii U. I think things may have changed there for the better as well.
"ms would be out of consoles this gen"
X1

I think they are out of the console business, they make PC's you hook up to your tv to play Gamepass games. Are there any new gen games that won't play on 8 year old X1? When they traded in "generations" for "iterations" they were effectively out of the console biz.
https://www.engadget.com/2016-08-17-microsoft-aaron-greenberg-qa-project-scorpio-vr.html
@rjejr You're right. The WiiU Slim came out in 2017. It's definitely better now that it doesn't use Miracast for the video. I think most of the games run a little better, too, as long as you buy the texture pack for $60 for each of them.
I've always found the "console" distinction meaningless since the x86 introduction. Of course XB is a PC primarily, that's why I bought the thing. XB was always meant to be a PC, that was the point since 2000 ("get Windows into the living room.") But PS5 is also just a PC. The hardware may have some bespoke things going on, but these machines are all just PCs. That's why even Sony is just going onto PC now. That's what the publishers wanted back 7 years ago, standardization of architecture to making porting between everything easier. MS was always going to do that. Sony probably ruined their legacy by doing it, but they were in no position to buck the trend after PS3, so here we are.
I prefer iterations to generations, actually. I bought an X1X expecting that model and was dismayed when XSX was announced as-is, and that the new games won't be backward compatible. Nintendo is likely going the iterations route on Switch, though I imagine they'll do it badly and it will look terrible. Andrew House once said PS was going to do that, and then somewhere along the line they got cold feet and stayed the course (for now.) It'll happen accross the board eventually. People are used to mobile. Iterating would be a LOT easier on the industry (see also, scalpers, stock shortage, etc.) And honestly it would be cheaper on the consumer if you could rely on one box to not just "end" one day. PS5 actually backtracked toward House's words eventually with pretty much everything but R&C being cross-gen.
If we're real, the "console biz" ended with PS3/360 (Plus Switch.) Between consoles, streaming, etc, the PC/mobile model is here to stay. Rarely do I say change is a good thing, but in this case, I think it actually is. The PC model was always a great model, software-wise. It's just that the hardware and OS is a mess. When I shifted from PC back to console, the software model was one thing I really missed.
As for XB, all the big games announced (for a few years from now, mind you) starting with Halo are Series-only. They backtracked on the "everything will run on X1" idea after the Halo reveal backlash and in response to "We believe in generations." And then Sony revealed they were going to go cross-gen all the way after all.
@NEStalgia It did seem like both Sony and MS did a big flip-flop this last gen. Not sure how it plays out, but I guess while Sony has it's games hitting PC these days Xbox and PC w/ Gamepass feel more like exactly the same thing. We have Gamepass, I play a bunch of Xbox games w/o an Xbox of any gen on my 75" 4k tv, w/ my DS4 over bluetooth dongle, b/c I'm cool like that. 😎 Sony, I still feel like I need their box, even if it is just a name brand PC. So it's more like an Apple PC I guess then a generic Microsoft PC. If you want Apple Arcade, you need an Apple, which is just a PC that runs iOS rather than Win. So Apple is different from Windows, and Sony is different from PC. Xbox is PC.
Thing is, I like console gens b/c at least they are a little more straight forward, unlike the lie that is PC iterations. Will any game play on any PC, sure, as long as you buy a new $300 video card every 2 years. $300 isn't an iteration, it's a new console. We have 2 PC my son and I game on. Some games play, some don't. Iterations are a lie. Also, way too much work. Just give me a console and tell me what works each gen. Then I'll wait 6 months for it to work. OK, that part is very PC.
"The WiiU Slim came out in 2017...buy the texture pack for $60 for each of them."
It isn't even a texture pack, games look the same. It's a $60 licensing fee to play the same game on 2 different consoles. Seriously, I'm getting disgusted w/ Nintendo these days. Labo Garage w/o the Labo, THAT'S what they got!?!?! 😝
@rjejr I'm actually surprised we still have any consoles that are still console-y. When things changed to x86 I figured we'd be running hard to PC-ify everything. We kind of did, but it's muddled.
I think the main difference at this point with Sony and MS's approach is primarily just that Sony, as a hardware company first and foremost wants you to need their box. Playstatiosn were born out of the CD player and DVD player model. It's part of its DNA that's hard to escape. They can't escape that thinking because chips and consumer electronics is their entire business model. And Sony has failed at services outside Everquest at every single step. MS has never really cared about you buying their box, it's not in their DNA, they don't sell physical products except as peripherals. Their core products have always been an OS that is primarily sold as an included license with a hardware purchase from other vendors, and a productivity suite mostly sold under enterprise blanket licenses. It was never about moving consoles for them. It was about bringing engagement time into the platform. GP just finally realizes that more vividly than before. Remember, the original purpose of the original Xbox was never to compete in console sales at all. It was mostly about securing the DirextX API as the development standard (instead of shifting to OpenGL and away from MS dependence) to secure Windows development tools. Console sales were secondary. Xbox exists to secure PC gaming, and more, PC game development. So it all makes sense.
An irony is that if Xbox never happened, DirectX probably would have floundered and vanished, and there'd probably be no HzD on PC. And Apple would probably own the PC gaming space.
I do agree on video cards, though. The cost and annoyance of problems/configs with that stuff is why I'd returned from PC to console years back to begin with last rig cost $3k by the time I was done, and blew through 2 $400 video cards in a year, plus an HDD and a power supply. Iterations are good, though. The PC itself was a costly money sink, but the games mostly would still run on any PC today, and future games would still run on it up to a point, just not well. Kind of like running Outer Worlds on Switch.
That's why Amazon is nice. Amazon gives me free Labo with every roll of toilet paper I buy. Well, I pay $120/yr for free 2-10 day shipping (that's built into the product price anyway), but they do include free Labo, so it's still a better deal than what I get from Nintendo.
@NEStalgia "and future games would still run on it up to a point, just not well."
You and I are going to have a fun 3 day discussion when things go to all streaming. Not all digital, all streaming. PCs won't be a thing to upgrade then, we'll just need to pay $500 per month for broadband. 🤣
Good recap on the history of Xbox. I think I knew that, but it's worth repeating. Sony thinks it is Apple, so there's that. Nintendo might be the only true Apple. Apple for Kids. I think I'm going to start using that on NL, should be good for a few laughs. 😎
@rjejr Did you just put "fun" and "all streaming"in the same sentence? . I don't hate streaming.. And neither do you since you have game pass cloud too, but it's janky enough on gigabit fiber. I can't imagine what it's like for like 85% if the population that doesn't even have that option. It's a cool add on.
haha, yeah, Sony really does think it's apple. Remember the Sony Style stores? 😬
Nintendo has a little in common with apple, but I still compare them more to Disney. They're all Disney. Heck they even have the theme parks now. Did I mention I absolutely abhor Disney? Apple too, though.
So basically, Sony is Apple, Nintendo is Disney. Microsoft is Microsoft. And in the completely effed up world were in, that somehow translates to them being the least offensive.
@NEStalgia If Nintendo was Disney it would buy Sony and Microsoft and then it would only release Uncharted and Halo games and their spin-offs.
And just an FYI in case I mistyped earlier, we have Gamepass on PC, but only the downloading kind, like Steam, not stream. No Xcloud. Or xCloud.
@rjejr lol, well even disney couldn't buy ms. People underestimate the raw power of the tech titans which is the only reason the public doesn't demand breaking them up. It's horrifying to look at the valuations and compare. Apple could buy disney and walmart in the same day and not even have to explain the slight dip in the bottom line to investors. It's a rounding error. Microsoft and Amazon are only somewhat down the ladder from that. Sony is very rich, and very powerful, but Google could buy them with the change in the couch cushions by the nap pods. Not just playstation, all of it, columbia, bmg music, the insurance company, the whole shebang.
Ahh, GP PC... Thinking of you and pc gaming goes together like peanut butter and liverwurst. That's mostly true for me these days too, of course.
Speaking of which, my prepaid xbl from 3 years ago apparently expired on the first, so I finally took the plunge on ultimate. I was paying sticker for gp anyway, do ultimate is less than buying the two separately without a sale, so now I have pc, cloud, ea play etc. Not that I have a gaming pc anymore that could run anything. But cloud could be fun. More fun than trying to not hate acnh last year on switch...
@NEStalgia Our 2 PCs that my son and I "game" on are running a GT 740 and GT 1030. And as my son likes to say, "that's GT, no X". And they are in a 10 year old and 5 year old PC. So we're kind of limited in what we "game". But that's fine, I think most stuff not first person will run. Though outputting 640x480 to my 4k TV is kinda funny. 😂
MS should buy Nintendo. Should have long ago. Wondering why they never did I once - gasp - did some research and Japan had some stupid law about outside countries not buying Japanese companies in Japan. Can't imagine why. Anyway I know that's gone by the wayside now but I do wonder if it ever entered the conversation and MS ever really thought about it 20 years go?
Google doesn't need to buy Sony, Nintendo or MS, they have Stadia. 🤣
@rjejr If only every country had that law about outside companies not buying their companies....
Nintendo's smart to buffer themselves with cash though. It makes buyouts really difficult. Usually it's done with virtual money on stock swaps and asset transfers and whatever. Nintendo has to be bought with a cold, hard, cash withdrawal. Liquid buyouts are pretty much a no-go for even the biggest companies. In the Iwata era I thought that was great to keep Nintendo, Nintendo. But in the Furukawa era, Nintendo's already Disney, so it really doesn't matter much anymore. There's not much Nintendo about them anymore except the middle fingers to their customers. MS wanted to make Nintendo's hardware for them back in the day....that's probably as far as they really wanted to go. And Nintendo mostly threw them out.
Stadia has no games!!1 No...really....
@NEStalgia "MS wanted to make Nintendo's hardware for them back in the day."
Emphasis on back in the day. The way MS has been buying up companies lately surely Nintendo crossed their mind.
Though come to think of it the way Nintendo has been putting out games the past few years starting w/ Nintendo Land I guess, AC:aF, SFZ, Labo, Ring Fit, Space Soccer, I can't think of anything MS would want. Maybe BotW, but they already have AC. I know ACNH sold 30 mil but it's probably only 1/10 that, 3mil, on Xbox. You know, b/c it's not a brown FPS. 🤣
@rjejr That's because Xbox actually has other games to choose from. Nintendo decides which one game everyone will play each year. Even Sony offers a few different identical AAA third person action adventure shooters to choose between
@NEStalgia "Nintendo decides which one game everyone will play each year."
I was going to say - let's be fair and say new game every 3 months - but you may be right, it may be once a year. My kids are still thinking of splitting Pokemon Snap, and I may just be a nice dad and go in on it with them, $20 each. But mostly b/c I have $50 of Best Buy credit expiring May 29th. Would use it on PS5 if they had any to sell. Or Ratchet & Clank if I could purchase a PS5 elsewhere. Or a PS5 Dualshock5. Was thinking about Biomutant on PS4 but that will be $20 by the time I play it. So, have my kids hand me a $20 bill each, spend $10 on Snap, profit. 😉 I'd play the 10 hours of that like an hour a day every morning while they were sleeping. Teen boys wake up after noon in the afternoon over summer break.
Sometimes I really wonder why people buy non-Nintendo games full price at release, they'll be 80% off within a year. I mean multiplayer I get - Day 1 or you're a pawned noob - but single player offline, what's the rush? I'm playing Trials of Mana now, released 1 year ago, got the disc for $15 at Target. 🤷♂️ I suppose spoilers in story driven games like TLOU, Uncharted and Gow of War, but a lot of games these days seem like $60 Day 1b/c they know they'll be $20 in 3 months. I can wait, for a lot. But I don't usually wait w/ Nintendo b/c 4 year old BotW is still $60. SM Odyssey is on sale for $40 only 3 1/2 years later, guess that's a win? Snap may be $60 until New Pokemon Snap DX releases on Switch 2 for $70.
