The Uncharted movie has gone cold since its COVID enforced delay, but unlike in the old days, we know that the film has been shot and can be fairly confident that it’ll come out. Some fans are already fuming over a new still from Nathan Drake’s silver screen debut, however: it shows Tom Holland as the titular adventurer alongside his mentor, Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan, played here by Mark Wahlberg, of course.
The picture, first published by the New York Times, is part of a story on how Sony is betting big on television and movie adaptations of its intellectual property. But PlayStation fans have been eager to point out the problems with the new shot: Sully doesn’t have a moustache, Tom Holland isn’t even dressed like Drake, and, well, let’s be honest – this image doesn’t exactly scream Uncharted in the slightest, does it? There is an old statue in the background, so that’s something, we suppose.
To be fair, the film has always been billed as a kind of origin story – it’s meant to be tantalising to series newcomers, while still satisfying long-time series fans by offering something a little different. We have seen Wahlberg sporting a ‘stache in some older set photos, and we know that Holland received the blessing of voice actor Nolan North during principal photography. Perhaps, then, this photo doesn’t tell the full story – we’re choosing to remain optimistic for now.

Max payne movie with mark was horrible.super natural and acting🤔.this looks weird also.word up son
Yeah when I saw this on instagram I was thinking: No stache no Sully.
Fans aren't happy with insert anything here. That's why the term fan is short for fanatical. Comes with the territory.
I don't have high expectations for this, but come on, it's one freaking still. Also, the mustache and cigar reveal is obviously going to happen at the end.
Honestly I tend not to judge movies based on stills or 2 minute trailers.
This is an out of context picture from a scene in the film and we have no idea when it takes place or its significance in the plot
I'm not the biggest fan of either Holland or Wahlberg's castings in these roles even if I think they're great actors, but I'm not jumping the gun on stuff like this. I need to see tangible footage first. I'm also surprisingly not that bothered by Sully not having his mustache and for me it's not going to make this movie crash and burn or raise red flags or anything
I am concerned about the choice of director, mostly because Ruben Fleischer imo hasn't made a good non-Zombieland related movie and I just didn't really like Venom outside of the chemistry between Eddie and the symbiote.
It just isn’t really Uncharted. You’d be as well making a new IP because it barely resembles the games. I like Tom Holland but this is being set up to fail, just like the last couple of non-Spider-Man projects he’s been a part of.
@nessisonett Honestly I actually kinda liked Devil all the Time and even though Cherry left me heavily mixed, Holland's performance was actually really good for the material he was provided.
Chaos Walking was about as much of a disaster as I expected with how long that film spent in development hell
Maybe they’ll like some of the other 130,000 frames in the movie.
There's a kind of world weariness to Drake, like he's part excited kid but also part "oh boy, here we go again" that makes him who he is. I can see Holland doing the excited kid part but nothing more, nothing to temper that. I'm picturing his Drake being less modern Indiana Jones and more child Anakin from Phantom Menace.
Honestly didn't know which one was supposed to be Drake, they kind of look like they just came from a physics class.
@TheFrenchiestFry Y’know, having a look at his filmography, I’ve somehow managed to see every single Hollywood movie there over the years. And I didn’t think much of any of them minus Spider-Man. I guess In The Heart Of The Sea was alright? I mean it wasn’t really but it’s probably the best of a bad lot.
Loved the games, couldn't care less about a movie. Games had you tied up in the story for over 100 hours. How's a 90 minute movie supposed to compete with that? It can only be a very shallow scratching of the surface. I wish they'd stop tarnishing good games with lame movies.
It’s really hard for me to picture Sully as Mark Wahlberg personally.
This looks kind of like the section from Uncharted 2 where they burgle the museum
Wahlberg?
Ok how much of this is set in Boston. Good lord.
I guess the lesson here is to only release photos that look like a screenshot of the game...?
To be fair this just looks like one of the many exploration of a puzzle room parts from Uncharted. I dont have much faith in the film mostly because I don't like the castings nor the director for it. All of their styles just clash so hard with the video game equivalents of Uncharted. Maybe I'll be surprised, but I rather doubt it.
It's just going to be silly fun. Nothing more than that. I have no problems with anything I've seen of it so far, mostly because it occupies a completely different portion of my brain to the games.
I don't need it to be overly faithful to the games - I have the games for that.
This can do whatever it wants, as long as its not muck.
That room is too well lit for Holland to be holding a flashlight up... like are you blind kid? I can see the intricate details of every item in that room from this still image so why can’t you!?! Haha
Tom looks fine but Marky Mark... has he ever been good in anything?
The Nathan Fillion and Stephan Lange short nailed it. Sony should have went with authenticity instead of star power. If anyone here hasn't seen it, check it out on youtube.
Hope the movie is a failure, and the same for Last Of Us.
Spider-Man’s shirt is half tucked so I don’t know what the 5 people on Twitter are upset about.
Looks like National Treasure 3
That’s not Drake. Not at all. Nor does that look like Sully. I’m also seeing what he said about trying to look cool. This is a disaster that will have nothing do with Uncharted. Movie neds to get cancelled and never be made. The ship sailed when they waited until Nolan North was too old to cast. They legit had a cast for the movie with the game’s cast. They looked and sounded like most of the characters.
I’ll admit I’m not a big Holland fan, but I just see his Drake being a pathetic attempt. Considering he said he messed it up, I think I’m gonna be right.
All I see Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg & an easy payday for them. The charm of the Uncharted games was getting to know the characters and following them on adventures, it felt Indiana Jones-esque but did enough to bring a fresh spin on things
This is an aspect where a lot of video game movies miss the mark, they assume celebrity status = more hype for the leads while diluting the story and nuance of the games
Naughty Dog already embarrassed themselves with Uncharted 4, so many mistakes were made in that game and it was such a huge step back from 3. This movie won’t have to try hard to have a better story than 4, then all they need are some good action scenes and chemistry between Nate and Sully, if they do those things it should be a really fun movie.
It’s not like the uncharted series is Metal Gear, it doesn’t have this long story where you need to have played every game to even understand, uncharted is a fun series with good characters, good chemistry between those characters and fun action set pieces. I’m not the biggest fan of Wahlberg or Holland but they are big names and give the movies a great chance to be successful, fans shouldn’t be so quick to try and crap on every little thing about the film.
Has Sully ever held a backpack like that over one shoulder? Eeesch...
Nathan fillion's uncharted short on YouTube is awesome.
Please continue your regularly scheduled discussion
Nathan Fillion should’ve been cast as Drake
Having seen the entire film now, I'm more angry that it's only one frame long.
Movie adaptations of games for the most part are never that great. I never set my expectations too high for this anyway.
Nathan Fillion was the perfect drake 10 years and 20 pounds ago.
@nessisonett I noticed Holland is going through the Chris Hemsworth phase of his MCU career where outside of Marvel its flop after flop with Hollywood desperate to make him the next big thing. I like Holland and he's a good actor but he seriously needs to pick better projects.
Looks fine to me. Not sure how the film will pan out, but I’ll be going to watch it.
It's a movie 🤷♂️
Not a fan of Tom Holland anyway
The games are like movies, the way the stories were told and the real life graphics. Considering that they should know it will be really hard to even match the games in a cinematic way. It will be the same with the upcoming Last of Us series. Sony should make a movie of a older ip instead of the ones that are already great cinematic experiences.
This picture wouldn't sell any film to anyone. You could put any two actors in those outfits in that location and everyone would yawn.
My problem is we only had 3 solid Uncharted movies...
...called Indiana Jones...
This is from the new Mass Effect movie. Joker and Kaidan are exploring some Prothean ruins.
Everything about this image is wrong.
I hate origins movies, series, games etc. Everybody already know what happens. Why they insist? Is like han solo movie! Whats the point to see a han solo origins movie when he die in the star wars later?!?!?!
I'll just continue giving it the benefit of the doubt while also keeping my expectations in check until I actually get to see it. No point in judging it by the 2 or 3 photos out there.
So often fans get hung up by the look of the characters that nothing else matters. Live action adaptations like full metal alchemist, bleach, dead or alive try to get the look 100% and then it's just ridiculous because the design doesn't translate well into real life. Of course Uncharted is grounded so you wouldn't have the same effect.
If I want Uncharted or The Last of Us, I'll play the games. Games have surpassed movies/tv series as a source of entertainement and storytelling for me years ago. I barely watch any TV or go to the cinema anymore. Ditto for Netflix and HBO, which I pay for but hardly ever watch. I wish Hollywood just gave up on making movies/tv series based on games already.
As my avatar suggests, this film will flop HARD without a moustache. We all know, I'm just the bravest one to say it out loud.
Video game movies suck. We all know this one wo t be any different.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Couldn't agree more. If only they spent a fraction of that time being upset or hating on things, actually doing things they enjoy, the world would be a much better place.
@Amnesiac Not at 24fps they won’t 😂
Well, it is a movie based on a video game. People shouldn't be surprised if it ends up being bad.
@Jaz007 My guess is that Sony has decided that trying to be too faithful to the game character's look and design is going to end up weird and not satisfying, so they've gone with a full-on reimagining of the characters (see also The Last of Us with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey who don't look at all like Joel and Ellie).
While I can see where they're coming from, there is no way it will make anyone happy : fans of the game will not get used to the new faces, and newcomers to the franchise will be lost. Frankly, I give both endeavors a 0,01% chance of being actually anything more than just soulless, almost boring, productions.
Looks ok to me. Just like video games of movies shouldn’t actually try and be just the movie - Video game movies should not try and just recreate the game. Wahlberg absolutely works as a young scully. Ditto for Holland. I think the casting is spot on.
Really looking forward to this being a good action romp. Just like the games.
to be fair they seem to be in some kind of church, which is pretty much in line with Uncharted, there's always exploration of a temple... but yeah, no 'stache
Has there ever been a good video game > movie adaptation??? And I mean BESIDES the sensational Super Mario Bros. Movie.
@KnightRider1982 Why may i ask i rather see a good movie that succeeds.
@tameshiyaku I had the same with the first Resident Evil movie i liked it for what it was. Sometimes you have to just get your expectations down and just enjoy the movie.
Im not a big fan of Wahlberg and why not try some actors that are less famous but just good actors. But to fair a ton of movies do that put in a big name and thats it.
That’s like making a Battletoads movie starring Kermit the Frog.
Damn they should really make a Battletoads movie, am I right???
Internet hating on something they havent even seen yet. Nothing new to see here.
This is no uncharted just like the National treasure movies aren't Indiana Jones. Too bad Tom Holland will have this stain on his otherwise pretty great track record with movies. Everytime i hear a movie is coming out based on a videogame i just go why? Seriously just stop! Even the not so terrible ones are still pretty bad.
I'd rather replay the games for the 50th time than watch this crap.
@Exlee300p "The Nathan Fillion and Stephan Lange short nailed it."
Totally agree. It was an awsome short that felt like it could be special.
@Stocksy I’m with you here, it reminds me of that avengers game, people complained because the heroes looked so similar to the movies but it wasn’t quite them, they ended up feeling like knockoffs.
Sully and Nate don’t need to look like they do in the games, they need to have the same fun personality’s and chemistry, if they can do that than this movie has a great chance of bringing in fans that have no idea about the games.
@RudeAnimat0r Agreed, roundabout the time Drake gets his iconic gear on - when we get a possible teaser for a sequel.
Sully looks like he got just expelled from high school because he had to change Nate's diapers in class.
@trev666 I watch him regularly on The Rookie, he is in great shape.
maybe wait until we have all seen it just a thought 🤦♀️
They have gone for totally the wrong vibe on this movie mark wahlburg as sully really i just dont get that casting.
Funny, as Sammy was originally hyping this extensively months ago, when back then I said the actors looked inaccurate and inauthentic. Partisan brain syndrome, I guess. 🙄
I adore UC and Naughty Dog, but this looks very cheesy.
Why is it so difficult to make a decent film based on a video game. You literally only need to stick closely to the source material and Bob's your uncle and fans are happy.
uhm, they don't look like their video game counterparts at all. i know the movie is already finished, but they should've done a full cgi movie featuring the original voice actors imo. i'd pay to see that!
I think this pic is from a scene early in the movie. I think we all need to relax and remember how many times we praised things (games mainly) that seems awesome and when it actually comes out, it sucks (Cyberpunk 2077 anyone?). So we should've learned it's complicated to draw conclusions without much at hand.
Some people saying "its not uncharted". But isn't it being developed by the people who created uncharted? Who are we to say if it is or isnt? We dont have to like it, obviously.
Every time I read news about uncharted movie I take a deep breath in and hold it and go back in times when we received that 15 minutes of fan made movie which was the best uncharted movie we will ever get. Sad.
We've seen quite a bit of young Nathen in the games so its reasonable to set the movie in his younger years. I'm not expecting a master piece but at the same time There is plenty room for a fun heist movie.
Even with PushSquare being one the more positive game focused places on the internet still plenty folks on here looking to find a bit of misery where they can.
@Flaming_Kaiser
1.Milking the franchise for money than ever before by making the movie/tv show.
2. Instead of spending money on a movie/tv show, why not spend the money on making games and improving the PS5?
@Olmaz Which is why I think the ship sailed when they didn’t make it with the original cast. Years ago, Nolan North suggested he be used to play Nathan Drake in a live action movie instead of someone else trying to imitate him.
And other movies have done the look right, like Prince of Persia (good movie) and Tomb Raider (not saying they were good or bad, but the actors looked right).
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L
Go and watch Super Mario Brothers and then Street Fighter and finally Mortal Kombat.
Then reply as to why Uncharted needs to be made into a movie and Last Of Us into a TV series.
@The_New_Butler Forget Holland, even Marky looks too young for Sully. Significantly and it appears they haven't even tried to fix this error. It does say it's an origin story, so maybe it's set like 8 years prior to Uncharted 1.
That photo is terrible. They looks like tourists...
I hope there's some explanation as to what's going on there.
I'm more or less fine with both actors, but that doesn't look like Uncharted.
Just want the movie to look and feel like the games, even if the actors are going to be playing younger version of the characters. Will wait for the trailer.
I never have, and still don't understand the Hollywood market. The focus on star power never made sense to me. I can't fathom why people watch a movie because Famous Person X is in it. I know the money shows they do, but I will never understand such people. I don't buy a game because Nolan North is voicing in it. I buy a game because the game looks good, and if whomever does the voice acting makes me connect with the character, and it happens to be Nolan North, great. But people watch a movie BECAUSE Wahlberg is in it, in spite of whether he makes you connect with the character. That, I don't get.
For the people who play and love the games, this film will feel nothing like the game's & characters. Nolan North was the perfect Nathan Drake.
Chris Pratt would have been a better choice for the role of Nathan Drake.
@KnightRider1982 So what its not like Naughty Dog is making the movie. 🤪
@Janeo99
4 was good outside of it dragging on a little too long.
What did you hate about it?
@WeirdAlUHF334
Street Fighter with Van Damme and Mortal Kombat 95 are two of the greatest bad movies ever made.
They aren’t good in the traditional sense. But they are so over the top and ridiculous that if you watch them as parodies of the games they are based on, they are actually pretty brilliant. Especially Street Fighter.
@TheRedComet I never got into Sam, a lost brother could have worked but I felt Sam was just unlikeable from the start, there are so many red flags about him, Sully is shown not to trust him, toward the end of the game it’s revealed Sam lied about everything, that is never mentioned, Sam isn’t confronted about it or anything. There was no point having that reveal if nothing was ever gonna come of it. It would have been far more interesting if Sam wanted revenge after being left in prison for so long, something more interesting than long lost brothers reunited.
The gameplay itself I felt took a step back, the driving was cool but the set pieces compared to 3 were pretty forgettable, the melee combat system is just the same as TLOU, 3s was never groundbreaking but it was better than just pressing square and hoping you win.
Maybe saying naughty dog embarrassed themselves with the game is too far but I feel it was a step back from 3 which shouldn’t happen when it’s a new generation and 5 years after.
I don't understand. Wasn't Uncharted 3 and 4 Nathan's origin story? Why do we need this? I'm getting cringe vibes.
would of been better with joe pesci and Robert de niro 2010 🤣
@playstation1995 Why are you using the term "Word up, son" that PushSquare's Associate Editor, Stephen Tailby @Quintumply uses as his profile signature?
Back to the movie, hopefully this won't be too bad. It's Sony's largest franchise and I'm sure they'd want to make sure everything is perfect. I'm quietly optimistic...
@TheRedComet
Oh man you’re right. Hell, I’m one of the few that even liked MK: Annihilation!
@Profondo Ah, I see you're not familiar with the lore. It's actually the other way around! @playstation1995 has been saying "Word up son" for years, and at one point the community noticed it. It became a sort of in-joke, I guess, and everyone was saying it. I added it to my profile for that reason. Use of the phrase has died down but I still think it's funny haha
@Quintumply. Haha i seen that.the reson i say word up son is because im a black man. im from new york. and im highly influence by old school rap music. Thats the way we talk and use to talk in nyc back in the day. Word up son means true that man or woman.or when someone agree or love something.it could be a video game.a movie. A music. A girl you love.etc if you listen to nas.wu tang clan.mobb deep.onyx.public enemy.black moon.kool g rap.eric b and rakim.etc you gonna see and hear it.you are doing a amazing job on pushsquare.and this is by far the best PlayStation site ever.much respect.gregory aka PlayStation1995.word life.word is bond.word to your mother.word up son
@Profondo. Actually i use it first.but quintumply use it as respect and a popular decision as everyone on pushsquare was loving that quote.word up son means true that man or woman.i can say god of war is the greatest game ever.and you agree and say word up son.im a black man from new york.im highly influence by old school rap music.thats where i get word up son from.thats the way we talk in nyc its a slang word.if you listen to mobb deep.wu tang clan.onyx.kool g rap and dj polo.black moon.brand nubian.naspublic eneny.etc you will hear them say that.word up son
I'm just gonna treat this as a parody or fan film, so I won't be insulted while watching.
