Sci-fi role-playing game Starfield, announced last week as an Xbox Series X|S console exclusive, was in development at one point for the PlayStation 5 – heck, there were even rumours that Sony was trying to secure timed exclusivity for the title, similarly to Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo. Now, the game will never release on a PlayStation platform at all – in fact, neither will Arkane Austin’s vampire-themed co-op shooter Redfall, or any other future Bethesda game.
All of this was to be expected when Xbox explored the back of CEO Satya Nadella’s sofa, and dug out the $7.5 billion required to buy the publisher outright. And global marketing bigwig Pete Hines has apologised for the situation, although his comments come across more like a shrug to be honest – this decision is ultimately way above his pay grade.
“If you’re a big fan of stuff we make [and it] is no longer available on your platform, I totally understand if you are unhappy or p*ssed or whatever,” he sympathised in a GameSpot interview. “I get it, those are all real feelings and frustrations. I don’t know how to allay the fears and concerns of PS5 fans other than to say, well, I’m a PS5 player as well, and I’ve played games on that console, and there’s games I’m going to continue to play on it, but if you want to play Starfield, [it’s on] PC and Xbox.”
He added: “Sorry. All I can really say is I apologise, because I’m certain that that’s frustrating to folks, but there’s not a whole lot I can do about it.”
Todd Howard, the creative force behind Bethesda Game Studios, made a similar statement when interviewed by British newspaper The Telegraph: “You don’t ever want to leave people out, right? But at the end of the day, your ability to focus and say, this is the game I want to make, these are the platforms I want to make it on, and being able to really lean in on those is going to make for a better product.”
The veteran developer went on to explain that Microsoft’s commitment to cloud gaming will actually open up more avenues to its software than ever before. Of course, that ignores the fact that Bethesda could have fully supported xCloud prior to the acquisition and released on PlayStation platforms as well, but we appreciate he has to put a positive spin on it.
There’s probably not much more to add at this point. The situation is, unfortunately, what it is.

Ha, so now we are the ones mad about games being exclusive. Its how console business worked since day 1
Yes, it is unfortunate. I just hope that behind the scenes Sony are planning on making their own sci-fi epic and looking at making a proper Western RPG.
In an ideal world they'd purchase BioWare from EA and the new Mass Effect and Dragon Age games would become PS5 exclusives but more likely these two will end up Day One on GP!
😒
@Yaycandy To be fair, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the first time a massive multiformat publisher that has traditionally released its games on all platforms has entirely transitioned to being a first-party outfit.
Maybe Psygnosis is the only other example I can think of, but even that's not comparable IMO.
This is unprecedented.
I mean, I’m bummed, sure, but life goes on. I was planning on getting a Series S anyhow when the shortages die down. They didn’t spend $7.5 billion to fork over stuff to a rivals platform.
What was the point of this apology? I am sure Pete intended to come off as being sympathetic, but this comes off as almost insulting. It would of been better to say nothing in this case I think. I am sure people understand why Bethesda games are exclusive given they are now owned by Microsoft and if they don't, that is on them.
At least series X players will be able to brag about having the best console version of a game for a change.
@Col_McCafferty EA owns the Mass Effect and Dragon Age IPs so that could never happen anyway.
Typical cry babies of today. They spend more time crying on garbage woke Twitter than playing games. Go play games and give your mom and dad a hug once in a while, it wasn't their fault you became a *****.
And has anyone seen metro exodus on the series s?
OMG, that's a giant turd in the pool right there.
We can always just vote with our wallets and, I don’t know. Not buy it? Not play on GP. Just a thought.
I knew the exclusivity was going to happen the day the buyout happened. Microsoft could've seen how people were hyped for Starfield and decided to pounce and get out the ol' credit card lol.
Hines and Howard's comments don't mean anything. I doubt these two care about what platform their games release on.
@MS7000 In Pete Hines' defence, he was directly asked this question so had to say something. I guess this was the best he could come up with.
It's not really his fault. Unfortunately for him, though, his job means he has to front it out.
I don't think anyone at Bethesda needs to apologise for anything but I also agree with @get2sammyb - it's unprecedented and frankly a bit of a d*ck move Xbox could only afford because of their "parents" money.
I guess all is fair though.
Still not really interested in any of the Bethesda RPG's
@get2sammyb Yes, it would be as if there was one company that owned the likes of Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Insomniac, Guerrilla etc, that released titles on pretty much all platforms and then Sony bought this company and made everything exclusive to their platform/subscription service.
MS helped out Uncle Phil and their Xbox division big time here.
It's hard not to be slightly pissed off about this especially to this particular poster whom probably counts Skyrim as his favourite game of all time. I'd have bought TES 6 Day One but now the only way I'll play it is if I swallow my pride and buy into the Xbox ecosystem. Hopefully it will turn out to be utter garbage!
@get2sammyb You have a point. I guess it was just the way he worded it that came off wrong to me. But people really shouldn't need to ask this question.
If there isn’t any real gameplay I’m far about to be upset about this Xbox exclusive. Furthermore I’m not a huge fan of the Bethesda games.
Thats why Sony needs to stop releasing games on PC and say the same thing. Because if Sony will release all their games on PC whats the point owing the Playstation?
This is what Microsoft do to ensure a quasi-monopoly. Throw big money at a loss, buy small and big parts of the industry, force customers to come to you and then start to profit when the competition is almost non existent, while churning out products that are mediocre at best.
This is not comparable to Sony buying small-ish studios after years of partnership, creating studios from scratch all while ensuring the exclusives coming out are top level products.
@LiamCroft Yeah I know but what a waste, maybe they've learned the lesson from Jedi Fallen Order that SP games still sell and the next entries in both series will be great. I'm playing ME for the first time and think it's pretty goddamn special, even if it's showing its age in many ways. A current gen ME could be utterly amazing.
Same with DA as well even though I tried to replay DA:I recently but had to stop admit just felt so dated.
What is there to apologize? It's just business, we just have to accept that
It’s an interesting turnaround from last gen, when all PS players did was dump on Xbox for having no exclusives. Now we’re supposed to be outraged that they have exclusives.
not a big deal even horizon 2 state of play has more views than the combined views of all vids shown at xbox e3
Well we really don't know what type of game starfield is yet, so wait and see for actual footage and gameplay details, the only other game that I'm really interested is elder Scrolls, last fallout was really disappointing so not too hyped for next one atm. So might possibly pick up a series s at some point but not too sure, playstation has enough to keep me going atm. But agree with other comments Sony need to get some one working on a good western RPG to counter elder Scrolls.
@get2sammyb
To be fair, bethesda was always dos and microsoft and then xbox. Thats why elderscroll 4 and fallout 3 were the first ones to Sony consoles.
Now ID did Doom and Wolfenstien and they were ported alot after floppy release on pc until bethesda took them over
I have to say people saying "this is how it's always been" are seriously downplaying the situation. This is unprecedented, make no mistake. When have Sony or Nintendo ever bought out an entire publisher and cancelled multiple versions of projects being developed on competing projects.
I'm not mad at Microsoft, they're just trying to improve their business, but I am disappointed in much of the games media and reporters (pushsquare exempt) that try to spin this as not being anti-consumer or somehow a good thing for gamers. This only detracts from the gaming world, and I would much rather have seen Microsoft increase their portfolio by adding to the landscape rather than just taking away as they seem to be doing. Bethesda were not a small studio that needed any more money for their projects and there are a lot of small ambitious studios who could have used the support more and gone on to make great exclusives for them.
The xbox isn't a better platform now for having Bethesda exclusivity, it will have the same games it would have had anyway, it is only better by comparison for having made Nintendo and Playstation libraries worse.
It's such a weird situation because you have all these corporate types dancing around the issue and trying to be diplomatic to avoid just saying what's going on. Phil Spencer comes out and gives it the big speech about how it's all about letting the most people play the games possible, and then the Bethesda dudes come out and talk in riddles and apologise to upset PlayStation Bethesda fans and whatever.
I wish they'd just tell it like it is. Microsoft paid $7 billion to keep Bethesda games off PlayStations. That's it. That's the story.
Microsoft bought it they own it they have every right to make it exclusive it's their property. However I won't lose sleep over not playing these games
@Yaycandy So just because the Xbox brand had access to one more ES game than Sony did that makes them more associated with the brand lol? If the PS2 wasn't such a pain to develop for it probably would have gotten Morrowind. Bethesda games sold much more on Playstation to begin with. They'll always be more associated with PC because that's where every game they've ever made has been started.
At least this is a new game and not the sequel to a popular multi-platform game ahem, Tomb Raider. Never forgive, never forget ✊🤣
The writing has been on the wall since the $7.5 billion check cleared. If people had grandiose delusions that these games would still be coming to PS systems after Microsoft spent that much, I'd say its their own fault.
I wouldn't buy any game from Bethesda now anyway Once Microsoft bought Minecraft I stopped playing it + Just get BUGfield on PC if you really want to play it and it will be the best version to I bet.
@fR_eeBritney To be fair, those established brands will come. But I guess by the times there's a new Doom, Fallout, Wolfenstein, etc people will be over it.
Maybe?
I mean there's nothing really to apologize for. Microsoft made an offer Bethesda literally couldn't refuse. I know I absolutely would have taken the money. Especially when you think about the fact that Bethesda has not put out that much in terms of quality titles in the past few years. I personally think Microsoft overpaid for them but that's irrelevant at this point.
I love Ninja Theory's games so I will be getting a Series X at some point but I'm not salty at Ninja Theory for taking Microsoft's offer. It's just business.
@nessisonett Sure, you can look at it that way if you so choose, but I think it ignores a helluva lot of context.
PlayStation players have been buying and playing Bethesda games for years, so of course there'll be some kind of response when those games no longer exist on PlayStation platforms.
@get2sammyb Have you seen MBG's latest discovery about 'Abandoned' Putting the studio head's name into google translate and it coming out as Hideo?
@nessisonett So you'd have no problem if Google bought Take Two and made GTA6 Stadia exclusive? Context matters. Sony and Nintendo aren't spending billions on 3rd party publishers just to keep games off other platforms, Microsoft is. Sony and Nintendo start new IP's with their own companies or with other 2nd/3rd party developers and then buy them. They're not using money from outside the industry to try and slowly monopolize gaming like MS is. That's what people have an issue with.
A shame for PlayStation to be sure but, on a personal level, I'm not going to miss Bethesda's games. DOOM 2016 was fun, but their RPGs have been becoming more and more dumbed down since Fallout 3 and New Vegas. After having been burned on Skyrim and Fallout 4, I wasn't looking at Starfield anyway.
fans that are mad about this are making the PS fanbase look whiny and (insert crying meme of your choice here).
who cares, there are so many games to play. play something else...like play Skyrim for the 746th time...
MS made a business decision, nothing people can really do about it.
I'm not interested in Bethesda games but good for the MS players if that's what they're into.
Yay video games!
So basically their thinking is that more people can play this game than before even though they've pulled support for PS because you can access it via Xcloud. But what about people who might not want to play it on a cloud subscription service or don't have a great internet connection? Not sure they thought that one through entirely but I get where they are coming from...nice of them to think of us gamers 😂
I'm really not that disappointed. I used to love Bethesda games (Elder Scrolls and Fallout) bit after playing The Outer Worlds (yes I know it wasn't made by Bethesda but Obsidian made a Bethesfa clone here for sure) I'm just so over this type of game. If it comes out to universal praise, maybe I might have to reappraise.
What urks me some though, is Uncle Phil's anti-exclusive rhetoric prior to the Bethesda purchase... positioning it as very anti-consumer etc. Well, I guess the media's darling was spinning **** way before 'lying-Jim Ryan' but only one guy gets called out on his ****.
I'd care if Bethesda RPGs weren't completely glitch-filled messes. They're ***** sandboxes, as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather play Mass Effect or Witcher any day of the week.
Until they show that they've got a completely new engine and actual forward-thinking ideas underpinning their systems, it's not worth getting upset over.
Doom, Wolfenstein, and Outer Worlds are what hurts. Elder Scrolls and Starfield... meh.
@mucc @get2sammyb Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of this at all. Acquisitions are bad for independence of studios as a rule. It’s just telling that the exact same people here who were massively upset about Sony games going to PC are having a mare about Bethesda games not coming to PS.
@Jester1701one Sony releasing all their games on PC day 1 is not happening. Releasing some of them years later - a very different thing.
I will miss the RPGs creates by those teams. I dislike any exclusivity, but at the end of the day its a business and this is a view many companies take to make money. Maybe like Sony Microsoft will eventually release the games to Sony 5 years plus down the road. Fingers crossed
Zenimax media which bethesda is part of was owned by a hedge fund and as we all know hedge funds are there to make money so when Microsoft made them an offer that made them money they took it
It's okay, it's better for gamers if all of console makers has different exclusive games. And since bethesda seems not in a great place before this, microsoft buying them is good for the development of their games.
@Korgon Well... Bethesda literally couldn't refuse anyway. Microsoft didn't buy Bethesda. They bought ZeniMax Media. Everyone keep ***** on Bethesda, but they had no complete say in the matter since it completed over their heads.
@get2sammyb True. I’m not really a fan of any of those games tbh but I did like Dishonored, The Evil Within 2 and Prey.
I’m not sure people will get over this anytime soon but I can empathise with them after the Tomb Raider debacle (and that did eventually come to other platforms).
Fallout 3 and dishonored 1/2 were good, you can keep the rest Pete.
I think there’s a chance that MS wouldn’t have even acquired Zenimax had Sony not picked up Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo as exclusives and attempted to get Starfield as well. Yes, they are timed exclusives, but I think you’re fooling yourself if you think they wouldn’t have paid for full exclusivity if they could afford it. I think MS just had enough. They got slaughtered last gen, saw Sony picking up these exclusives, and decided to do something about it. Shrewd, but probably a sound business move to ensure they are relevant for the foreseeable future. Building studios from the ground up requires to much time and talent that just isn’t available.
Makes sense from a business point of view. Luckily have a series x and gamepass too, however i can see how it’s annoying.
Honestly, I'd buy my first ever Xbox console for Elder Scrolls 6. Sad days
Im not surprised some Sony fans ain’t the smartest. Moaning about the likes of Starfield being an exclusive while justifying Sony moneyhatting 3rd party games and coughing up £70 without question to Sony for their exclusives.
PS5 owners can't be hypocrites. We crow over our exclusives then cry when MS has them? You can rage against MS business practices yes but complain about the exclusivity of a title? Hmm it looks bad.
I do feel bad for previous players of Bethesda games but having not been a big fan of them in the past, I'm not really surprised at this.
@SegaSaturnSNK internet tough guy right here, guys. Be very afraid.
@Floki
Oh yeah good correction I always forget they are owned by ZeniMax for some reason.
I for one am grateful for the appology. Whether its heartfelt or not, who can say. I think that it probably is. I think that there were probably people at Bethesda who didn't want to be MS exclusive, and are sad that it went down the way that it has.
After spending TEN YEARS waiting to play the next ES game, and now being told that I won't be able to, it hurts. I really does. All I can do is hope that Sony figures out a way to develop some similar games of their own. I absolutely love the story driven ones we've been getting. They're fantastic. But I really, really want some sandbox style exploration and crafting, third person RPGs as well.
@nessisonett the outrage, though dumb (it's just video games, come on now), it's not about MS finally having exclusives, but how they got them and what exactly they got. If they made a new studio or purchased a small one without iconics IPs and made some awesome games, there wouldn't outrage. Perhaps envy, but still.
@get2sammyb you are indeed correct and if it wasn't for the fact Phil spencer has stated numerous times how much he hates the exclusive practice of gaming ,maybe I wouldn't think he was such a hypocritical arsehole
I think then you shouldn't sell out if platform exclusivity sucks so bad but I get it. Some businesses deals make sense for the people involved and PlayStation has always been third-wheel to Bethesda's relationship to PC and Xbox.
All a non-issue to me because I'd still probably play their games on PC anyway but the fact they sympathize with PS only gamers is interesting.
@Lightning_FF13 I agree and ill play the games on my one x,but its the fact that Phils mantra for the last few years has been "exclusives are bad" that really gets my goat
@naruball The problem is, nobody will move to another ecosystem for this. We have examples of this. Both Orí and Cuphead were fantastic works of art. They were well reviewed and loved by everyone that played them, BUT they just didn’t move the needle.
@AK4tywill I signed on just so I could like this comment. well said.
@Col_McCafferty
There’s always PC.
I haven’t decided which route I’m going to go. I was contemplating a Series S, but ultimately Gamepass isn’t really my thing (I don’t play enough different AAA modern games to make it worth the monthly installment) so I’m probably going to just buy a pre built mid range gaming rig and start taking the crappy stuff out and putting good stuff in as I go along.
Right now, building a good PC is next to impossible because of the rampant scalping on 3000 series nVidias and Big Navi AMD cards. The only way to get one for a reasonable price is to go the prebuilt route, which unfortunately means you’re getting a crap power supply, messy cabling (in most cases, some builders do a good job), and a sub par CPU. They also have a habit of using sketchy RAM.
Not a fan of Bethesda games really (played some Wolfenstein New Order) so this doesn't bother me particularly. If I did some how get into their back catalogue though, does that mean I would no longer be able to play Doom, Fallout 4 etc on PS? Are they being removed from the store, or is it just future releases not appearing?
sony buy timed exclusivity left right and center but its only when Microsoft does it does this become worth moaning about
Be real!! Sony was trying to get an exclusivity window for Star Field like they already got for Final Fantasy 16. Microsoft knew this would kill this generation so they went all in and bought the publisher. No need to apologize. All business.
The point is Bethesda will never receive my business again. The one thing about TES and Fallout is that it they are published on every possible platform. By going exclusive, Bethesda is telling me their product sucks and are no longer relevant, especially for the sum of money they accepted. Furthermore, Microsoft has proven multiple times that almost everything they touch turns to mold. Ahem, Rare.... I doubt TES 6 will be a quality product.
@IanDavid Haha thanks my man!
@naruball get off that Twitter and play those games!!!!
@vapidwolf Sony doesn't want Game Pass. It is their choice why it is not exclusive.
It sucks. There's no way around it.
It is especially irritating that desktop PCs have skyrocketed in price while laptops and Macs have declined.
I do still need a new PC anyway, but I am really not ready to drop 3,000 dollars on a new rig yet.
No Pete, I'm sorry that there are people who legitimately had the expectation Microsoft were actually going to keep your games multiplatform after literally buying you for more than Disney paid for Lucasfilm and Marvel combined
Really. We can be really dumb sometimes
This is really funny considering Sony allegedly tried to pay for timed exclusivity on Starfield for PS5 as late as literally months before Microsoft stepped in. I bet literally no one on this site would be complaining if that was the outcome instead because "pLayStAtIOn dA bEsT"
I plan to get Game Pass on my PC if I really want to play a game from XBox. I will pay the $9.99 for a month when I title I must play comes out and turn off auto renew! I will give $10. to play and compelet Wolfenstein in 30 days easy.
Lets face it games will be few and far between months you will have to pay for If you own a PlayStation. Sign up and canceling the sub at the end of the month saves you $60 on the cost of a game thats exclusive to Microsoft. Its still a net loss (for Microsoft) if you pay only $10 to play the heck out of a game for one one month .
@Royalblues that's not true in regard to Spiderman. Sony owns Spiderman, they bought the rights years ago from marvel when they were struggling, before Disney bought them and before the MCU. So no Disney can't get aggressive in regards to Spiderman and Sony can do what they like with their property
@adrianthealchemist
“ Starfield is releasing well within that time.”
Starfield is definitely releasing after the 2 year point. The console released in October of 2020 and Starfield is releasing in November of 2022.
Besides, MS announced they are putting xCloud on the xb1 so they can play Series X quality through the cloud.
@supergurr SONY DOES NOT OWN SPIDER-MAN
SONY ONLY HAS THE FILM RIGHTS AND DISNEY OWNS EVERYTHING ELSE RELATED TO THE CHARACTER, INCLUDING COMICS, TV, VIDEO GAMES AND MERCHANDISE
SONY'S ONLY INVOLVEMENT WITH THE PLAYSTATION GAMES ARE VIRTUE BY OWNING THE DEVELOPER AND HANDLING PUBLISHING. DISNEY STILL RETAINS THE RIGHTS TO THE GAMES AND THE LICENSE ITSELF
HOW MANY TIMES DOES THIS HAVE TO BE EXPLAINED. SPIDER-MAN IS NOT A SONY CHARACTER.
I understand the frustration, but the glass is always half full with games - Look at all of the stealth partnerships Sony are forming now and the investments they're making. Maybe this would have happened without the Zenimax buyout, maybe not. But PlayStation will always have plenty of bloody fantastic games to play.
I know the fanboys will shout for Sony to "return fire" and buy a publisher, but the risk there is it could trigger an acquisition war that nobody wants.
Also, whether we like it or not, Bethesda have always just felt more at home on XBOX. That's where they wanted to go in the end.
The one thing that tickles me though is the double standard in the core community right now.
We had people for the last few years saying that Sony and Nintendo were anti-consumer for developing and keeping their own exclusive IP on their own platforms. IP that they developed and that was, unless I'm mistaken, never available on other platforms.
On the other hand we now have large swaths of fans who are blocked from accessing narratives and franchises that they previously enjoyed unless they either fork out for another console, or, embrace streaming and remove what's left of ownership as an option.
Can you imagine if Nintendo or Sony had pulled the same move? The backlash would never stop. Don't get me wrong, I'll happily buy TES VI, Avowed and Fable for my Series X, but this PR spell that MS have over everyone right now has to fade at some point.
It'll be interesting to see what happens if/when it does.
I know I'm naïve in holding out hope that Indiana Jones may come to Sony somehow, maybe after XB timed exclusivity.
Never really cared for Bethesda Games tbh, especially the mainline Fallout/TES - only ever played Dishonored, which was pretty great.
I couldn't care less.he is liar and phil also.i am gonna miss if evil within and prey and dishonored.but i dont care anymore.i got too many games to play.sony does need to buy bluepoint and and 🏠 housemarque.starfield might not be a goid game at all.sony just got to focus on theyre first party studiios.having 2 teams on each Studios.and aquire new studio.they already outselling x box.playstation make the best games ever.god of war and 👻 ghost of tshushima is a iconic examples.no matter how many studios x box got.sony is still al capone saint Valentine's day masacre. Xbox.like vince mc mahon old theme sone.x box got no chance.😄.playstation 👑.g.o.a.t.word up son
There is no point in going on about it. Bethesda = xbox. If you like Bethesda games then by proxy you like xbox games now. You can get a brand new series s and three months of gamespass for the price of four ps5 games (lol).
It is what it is. Either make up with xbox or start hating Bethesda, but moaning about it wont change anything.
@Loftimus I mean I find "hate Bethesda" to be a pretty stupid solution as well
They were probably bleeding money from Fallout 76 and were more than willing to sell themselves off to Microsoft to get better resources and more money injected into their development for upcoming games. Plus Bethesda games to my knowledge always or mostly sold better on Xbox and PC compared to PlayStation so it's not like many more people will migrate over in light of this development
@playstation1995 This seems like a well thought out, reasonable post from an unbiased video game fan.
I almost respect Microsoft for waiting this long to finally pull their wallet out...almost.
@Hypnotoad107 I mean do you see his username lol
@JohnKarnes that's what I plan on doing. Easy peesy lemon sqeezy! lol
Am I the only one who thinks his answer is honest and nice? He sounds like he doesn't like it being that way either, it's just out of his hands. What on earth do you people want? (cloud gaming junk PR talk aside from the second guy).
@TheFrenchiestFry thats fanboy mentality for you. I won't be hating anyone so, no point in lecturing me. It's just an opinion mate, not a set of instructions.
@playstation1995 What did he lie about? He sounded frustrated and said it was out of his hands, which considering the buyout, it is out of his hands. No reason to direct your bitterness at him.
@Jester1701one because a decent pc is at least 5 times the price of a ps5 and a load of hassle. Ridiculous statement.
This is why I have always gamed on everything so I don't miss out on anything. Let's be honest though Bethesda's games in recent years haven't exactly been that good so to me personally I don't think anyone here who doesn't own the new Xbox is missing out on anything.
it is unfortunate and I feel bad for PS owners who won't be able to play future Bethesda games. But at the same time, it's also hard to sympathize for PS fanboys because exclusivity is the type of competition they are gushing about. On the bright side. Sony is ramping up their exclusive games by partnering up with different third party studios to create games for them.
Microsoft is like the. Wwf million dollar man ted dibiase.everybody got a price for the million dollar man.microsoft. just buy company .and sony is wwf hulk hogan.the real hero.beeen the best for a very long time.and buy a studio rarely.and organically.word up son
Honestly, let Xbox owners have it. We have some true bangers that are only in the PS ecosystem and while it's unfortunate it won't be multi-plat on console, I think it's good that those players will have something to be proud of on their system... in 1.5 years. I'll just get back to platinuming* Rift Apart now.
@BrainHacker But MS didn’t get exclusives the RIGHT way. You have to build exclusives up from scratch, or if you’re going to buy exclusivity, you can only do TIMED exclusivity. /s
I have all the consoles, and I love all the exclusives on the consoles. For me, personally, I do love that when Xbox buys a studio that means I’ll get to play it as part of my sub.
@Hypnotoad107 Sony and MS are only funding those games. In my opinion, it is the developers who deserves the credit the most for those exclusive games and not the company behind them.
@adrianthealchemist It probably won't be exclusive to Windows 10 Store either considering Xbox Game Studios have supported Steam even with games that are slated for Series X like Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite
When they mean exclusive to PC, they basically mean "as long as it's a launcher on PC, you can play it"
@BrainHacker I agree completely. Write the checks and let the studios do their thing. Though I wish MS would force the issue a little more with some of those Rare IPs
‘Microsoft buying Bethesda was definitely the most shameless power grab we’ve ever seen in gaming’ I think is the point trying to be made here...
I feel bad for the developers working on these projects. You’re work isn’t going to reach as many people now and that’s gotta hurt. TES 6 will likely never sell as many copies now as Skyrim has 🤷
Like we were talking about in another article it’s always PS in the middle of this conversation but remember Bethesda was good to Nintendo too. DooM, Skyrim, and I think Wolfenstein were all on Switch.
Im not upset with Bethesda. Im more upset that Sony hadn't made a move in response and is cool trying to compete MS 26 studios compared to there 13. Give it two to three more years when all those MS studios start pumping out games. Like Phil said they will have an exclusive releasing every 3 months. Sony will never be able to compete with there two to maybe three titles a year.
Lol from what I read on here most fans 'think Bethesda are rubbish anyway', 'starfield looks crap'.
At least bethesda can aim to make game that takes full advantage of the xbox and pc. The future is definitely xbox, but still glad I got my ps5 for the ps4 and ps5 exclusives I missed.
Just wish xbox had haptics
@Royalblues difference with spiderman is that Sony owns the film rights as well as many other marvel characters, so a deal was made to include him in the mcu ,I cant see Sony giving xbox any of their games ,they're more than likely to fill any gaps themselves, its not like they don't have the talent.
You can take your apology and stick it up your $7.5 billion ar$e!!
@Gooseuk bethesda make buggy lacklustre games,id much rather be without those than spiderman, god of war ,ratchet and crew
@Ken_Kaniff quality over quantity ,ms has had 16 studios for years and not moved from the halo, forza, gears formula ,game pass fodder is all it will be from the majority
@Jester1701one that won't happen for new games,it definitely won't now
My disappointment is that there won't be a PS5 optimised version. With haptics and instant loading. But of course I will be able to play it. Through XCloud on GamePass, if nothing else 😊 However, the desire to play future Bethesda games did decrease.
@TheRedComet Not interested in gaming on PC.
Looked into it but decided console gaming is just easier.
I wonder if Sony bought Bethesda how different this comment section would be
@BrainHacker That's a misconception that we won't be able to play future Bethesda games. We aren't married to the console. And Microsoft makes games easily accessible via GamePass.
I guarantee in five years when we look back Bethesda being bought by Xbox is bad for everyone. They will release less games and the budgets will be smaller. Xbox “only” crew are happy coz all they care about is the “war”.
I own all three major consoles and feel this is bad for me, even if I can buy/play game - I have GPU and I think the Bethesda deal sucks
Literally the first time it’s paid off for me to be married to someone who loves Halo. Got a Series X and a Ps5 up in this hizzo 💯
@Stocksy I have all three as well, and I actually love most Xbox exclusives. I haven’t seen any evidence of shrinking budgets yet, so I’ll just enjoy any games that get added to GPU as they come. It seems many people hate the deal (and GPU) because of a bunch of things that COULD happen.
@TheFrenchiestFry yeah the hypocrisy in this comment section is absolutely palpable.
I mean there's people actively hoping for TES VI to be bad, rather than just buy it on a different platform and enjoy something they like 😂
How can people be so tribalistic about consoles and games I will never get 🤷🏼♂️
What's with these excuses?! lol
You sold out to Microsoft. There is nothing else to say.
Don't try and bulls**t us with "we wanted to focus on these platforms". It's BS. Microsoft bought you and they want it on those platforms. That's it. At least be honest about it.
@ScottyG Bruh Bethesda's support on Switch was trash lol
iD Software basically made up 90-95% of their output with the DOOM games. MachineGames put out New Colossus and Youngblood on Switch but not the preceding two Wolfenstein games they made, and Bethesda Game Studios put Skyrim and a bunch of ports of their mobile games like Fallout Shelter and freaking Elder Scrolls Blades lol
There's mainly two types of commenters in this thread:
1. "I'm sad Bethesda games are now Xbox exclusives. They should have built new IPs rather than stealing multiplatform ones."
(Well, I guess xbox is kinda doing the former with Starfield, so it'll probably sting again when Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 is announced)
2. "You're all dumb hypocrites, this is good xbox gets more exclusives. I have never and will never buy a Bethesda game anyway, so this literally doesn't effect me either way."
@Jaz007. Because. The game was supposed to come to ps5 since when it was announced.it was bound to happen.but microsoft just want people to buy a x box instead.and even phil before say he aint trying to take away Bethesda games from PlayStation.😏.ok playa.haha.word up son
@playstation1995 Phil never said he wasn't trying to take away games from PlayStation. He straight up said Microsoft were at least going to honor the current exclusivity deals on Deathloop and GhostWire but he never really made concrete promises for the future
I still don't get why you'd expect him to keep things as they are when he bought them for nearly 8 billion dollars amidst all the complaining and bickering that there are no exclusives worth playing on Xbox lol
@playstation1995 “ Because. The game was supposed to come to ps5 since when it was announced.”
Sony literally tried to get this game as an exclusive.
Not interesting in these games, but all I can say is shame on media outlets not reporting on this more as SUPER anti-consumer. Not only did Phil say he didn't make this move to "take away games from everyone" (lie) Xbox division as a whole did not earn this move. This money is from the parent monopoly company MS. Competition sure is good, but the competition is choosing PS/Switch as their main gaming consoles. MS did not play this fair at all and it's a shame so many are praising it as "It's finally Xbox time to shine!" Yeah, on the back of other studios they are now claiming is Xbox, not curating talent and making GOTY titles from their own WWS like Sony and Nintendo has done for years. I can easily buy an Xbox, but almost don't want to out of principle.
@Hypnotoad107 you think without the buyout the current slate of Bethesda output is all we would see?!? I doubt that. Unfortunately Xbox has a history of buying studios are shrinking their output. This will be no different and the underwhelming e3 underlined that.
@TheFrenchiestFry. Since?when was oh yeah games might come to ps5.we will see to oh no.all games probably will be exclusive to x box.the only games i will probably miss is if they do a new evil within.a new dishonored.or a sequel to prey.and i got too many games to play.so its all goid for me.word up son
@Stocksy I’m not familiar with MS shrinking their output. Sony has closed more studios than Xbox. Maybe Rare? But Sea of Thieves has been extremely successful, so it’s hard to fault them for it.
@Hypnotoad107. But thats what x box did.they know they cant compete with PlayStation anyway so a starfield exclusive would be the icing on for PlayStation cake.sony is still outselling the x box.because they got better games.and ps5 ps4 is amazing.when was the last time x box beat PlayStation.never happened.sony will be on top as usual.and sony will buy studios.playstation 👑 crown.the g.o.a.t.word up son
@viktorcode Well, that's why I said PS owners. Of course they could still play future Bethesda games, if they have an Xbox or PC. But I don't think majority of PS owners will be willing to spend money for a second gaming system just to play Bethesda games.
@Hypnotoad107. Phil basically said he clearly didn't make this move to take away from PlayStation gamers😏.ok 😄 haha.word up son
@playstation1995 I’m nearly positive he “made this move” to get more people into the Xbox ecosystem.
@playstation1995 What does that have to do with Pete's comments though?
@TheFrenchiestFry. You oviously wasnt paying attention. He clearly said that.😄😀😴.😏.we didnt make this move to try to take it away from PlayStation gamers.and he say oh yeah some games will come to PlayStation.but after that oh them games will. Not come to PlayStation.hes like hes paranoid.he flip flop all the times.word up son
@vapidwolf lol. Course they do sometimes, but Skyrim, Oblivion, morrowind are three of the best experiences I've had in gaming. Combine that with space and we are on to a winner. Creation engine 2 should help reduce the bugs.
Also, did you find a single bug in Doom Eternal, Doom 2016, any Wolfenstein or Prey? Cos goddammed if I did....
Take it you don't fancy Deathloop either then.
@Jaz007. It applies to what he say.him and phil.they cant compete with PlayStation.so phil had to take games away fom PlayStation.when starfiel and elder scroll was supposed to come to PlayStation.both are liars.but i dont care if Bethesda cames come or not.i got to many games to play.but they acting like people dont know whats going on.playstation is still the g.o.a.t. and will lay the smackdown on x box again.haha😃.word up son
Sure, sure, just to rub it into the salt wounds 🙄🙄😤😤😡
@Futureshark excatly 👍👍👍😁😁
MS has the money. Money talks. The money talked lol. It is what it is...
@trev666 my wife works for a hedgefund and I can tell you from experience, these people will literally light each other on fire to get a larger bonus/salary than anyone else in the office. Hegdefunds are giant wealth accumulation pissing contests that only hire relatives/friends for the executive positions and treat everyone who works under them like dog *****.
So a kid who is friends with one of the ceo's that just started at her company may make $200,000, get a VP title, AND be allowed a yearly bonus of anywhere between $100,000-$500,000 and have 0 responsibilities. BUT, people who don't have titles and have worked there for decades do all the work and get paid under $80k (bonus included).
They also tend to fire any women and black/Hispanic/latino people right around the time they would be able to retire with a pension or package.
Hedgefunds in america are run by super rich white males in order to keep the wealth distributed solely amongst the next generation of already rich white males. They do not care where or how the money comes in, so long as it comes in. So what you said about zenimax was right on target.
Not to mention that Robert Altman, one of the founders of Zenimax, had gotten in a ***** load of trouble for tax evasion and straw businesses and he was still CEO of Zenimax.
I definitely would have picked it up for my PS5 after all the updates that it will need come out after it releases. Their games are so bugged out for months and months. I'll scoop it up when I buy a new PC in a few years though for sure
When sony does exclusive stuff its "amazing" but when anything non sony does it, it's a travesty, the end of the world. To any sony fanboy crying, think before you cry. Microsoft own the company. And it's sony that's let you down by not even trying to buy the company from under xbox's nose. I got a ps5 and xbsx but i love that sony is losing out on this game and future games from this company. First nail in its coffin
@Royalblues That's on Disney then, understandable why Sony would prefer one of their studios to make a game for their platform.
The MLB thing is weird to me anyway, not sure why a baseball game was ever exclusive to Sony.
@AK4tywill @pulstar2018 they bought Zenimax NOT Bethesda. People need to specify that. Zenimax is like 10 studios and like 4 publishing fronts, insane.
@TheFrenchiestFry Alright mate, calm down.
I reckon.someone at Disney, not having a clue about gaming, probably thought Sony DID have exclusive gaming rights gave them the greenlight to publish on PS only.
😝
I do not have enough popcorn for this comments section
@Col_McCafferty The story behind it is SIE approached Insomniac first about doing a licensed IP game and then Insomniac went to Marvel to get the license to make Spider-Man games since it had just lapsed for Activision at the time
Insomniac however before settling on Spider-Man were actually allowed to choose any Marvel character and specifically decided Spider-Man would work for both his character traits and their experience gained on open world traversal gameplay from working on Sunset Overdrive, but realistically any other Marvel character had a chance of being selected
All Sony really did was start the conversation and eventually they got publishing rights, but Marvel owns the games still.
@theMEGAniggle I don't think it's important to specify. Bethesda softworks is the only subsidiary of any note and they, not Zenimax, are the publisher of games for Bethesda studios, Arkane, Machine games, ID etc. So why be vague?
It's not as if the likes of the Uncharted and God of War series were once on other platforms until Sony decided to buy each developer and lock them into their own platform. Sony have these developers the time, money and freedom to make the games they wanted to make and we're all benefitting from that.
Xbox just went whining to their rich parent and asked them to buy a company that owned an entire swathe of gaming IP for the sole purpose of removing these games from another platform.
If you can't understand the difference then there's no helping you!
Lol these people really don't understand that they got bought by Microsoft.
Making a previously multiplatform series exclusive always sucks.
If MS hadn't purchased them, these games would all have come to Playstation.
Whereas Playstation seem to be bankrolling at least a couple of brand new studios to create new IP recently, which increases the number of games available overall, even if they are exclusive.
I honestly don't care one bit about Starfield, never did, and the same goes for Fallout and most of the other Bethesda games...
But TES6? That's life right there... I genuinely hope something can be worked out with TES 6, even if it's timed exclusive I'll take that.
I'm on PS5, and if they do us dirty and keep TES6 as a full exclusive forever then that's that for that franchise as far as I'm concerned, I won't chase it around on different systems, but man that'll suck.
To be honest, Bethesda Game Studios don’t really make the RPGs I want anymore so I’m fine with this, but fair to understand why people are upset. I’m more worried about not playing another Obsidian game without buying a new laptop. We’ll just have to make it clear to Sony we want those kinds of games. I can almost guarantee that other studios could make a very good Bethesda-type game if they tried, they’re a very flawed studio
Am i bothered that these games wont be on playstation? No...am i really bothered that microsoft bought bethesda? Not really to be honest..what i am bothered about is that this move by microsoft forces the gamers that want these new titles to spend more money on a new console then buy the games too or buy game pass so you can rent the game and then decide to purchase it..if microsoft really cared about the gamers they would never have orchestrated this scenario so to me it just looks as microsoft are just looking at the dollar/pound signs and from a business point of view thats sound...for gamers it really sucks...and no i dont despise microsoft i just love my playstation more..
I'm personally not bothered about it at all and do not dispute that it's good Xbox has an exclusive game they're excited for.
That being said they're all proclaiming over on PureXbox that exclusives are great and PlayStation fans are delusional, y'know, the usual crap.
With them now going against their own narrative of exclusives being anti-consumer they better not have the audacity to complain when the likes of say Persona 6 ends up exclusive to PS5.
(Third of first party us irrelevant in my opinion, it's just all simple exclusivity.)
@TheFrenchiestFry
In what way is that “trash” compared to what 90% of developers do on Switch? Those are all Bethesda titles regardless of how they got there.
C’mon man... these comments sections get more condescending by the day. This site is slowly becoming unbearable because of how many people want to have pointless squabbles.
I'm not upset with Bethesda, I understand why they did it. That's just business. Xbox was just thinking big picture more than Sony was and decided to buy Todd Howard for $8 billion, which was well worth it. Instead of limping along with cross gen upgrades cross gen exclusives from lesser studios, Sony needs to think big. If I were them, in response to the Bethesda acquisition, I would be thinking how much will it cost to acquire Hideo Kojima or Hidetaka Miyazaki? To compete, Sony has to think about how to monopolize things that people won't go without. I haven't owned an Xbox since the early 2000s and I did then for Morrowind. Now I will buy an Xbox for Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6.
I'm not upset about Starfield itself, I'm upset because Starfield's situation sets on stone something very basic: no more Bethesda games on other platforms. Doom on Nintendo Switch is such a technological wonder that we'll never see again because of this BS Microsoft is pulling.
@Salt_AU it’s very different to what Sony do with their acquisitions and people who say it’s the same are just trolls.
@AK4tywill that’s fair. Just trying to say that it’s not just Bethesda they have.
As long as Microsoft doesn’t buy Capcom, Team Ninja, and the Tomb Raider series, we’re good Todd.
Bethesda games being console exclusives now doesn’t compare to the Nintendo vs Sega exclusives of yesteryear. Where whichever side you chose, you were missing out on some great games.
Bethesda’s never made a game I care about.
Omg some of these comments are nuts !!! Most ppl on this forum were all for exclusives when it was announced spider man would b a ps exclusive now it's changed , it's the way of the world and has been way before this gen consoles , oh and for those who are saying it's bad then get Sony to accept game pass on Thier systems if exclusivity is so bad ? But seen as though how hard it is to get a game to be multiplatfom multiplayer thanx to Sony and Thier money grabbing tactics and how long it took EA to get Thier vault on Sony( yet again thanx to Sony ) I can't see that happening .
Sony are too busy getting Thier £70 each game instead of sorting Thier own game pass service but then again Sony said they can't see game pass working ? Hmmmm it seems to be working great
@theMEGAniggle “ it’s very different to what Sony do with their acquisitions and people who say it’s the same are just trolls.”
Sony buys exclusives and Ms buys exclusives. MS isn’t doing anything Sony wouldn’t do if they had more money. Sony already picked up Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo as exclusives and tried to get Starfield as an exclusive, so MS stepped in. Anyone that thinks Sony wouldn’t be doing the same thing if they had more money is just a troll.
@Martsmall I think a lot of confused hypocrites are commenting to be honest. And your right, Game Pass seems to be working just fine for Microsoft.
Microsoft brought a new business model to gaming, Sony brought the traditional one. Both are working for now, but when it comes to exclusives it's as you said, they've existed for years and years in gaming and is not new in anyway shape or form.
I think we're done with the "Playstation isn't getting these titles cause of Xbox exclusivity and Game Pass" articles, Push Square.
What if Sony just called Phil's bluff and allowed Game Pass on their system?
What's Phil to do then?
@CielloArc I think Switch support is still up in the air considering Microsoft and Nintendo have been pretty buddy-buddy as of late and there are a couple of Xbox Game Studios titles on Switch with the Ori duology
Bethesda has more autonomy than most of the Microsoft owned studios given they're still going to be self-publishing and remain as a seperate entity not entirely folded into Xbox's other studios unlike developers like Ninja Theory and Obsidian, so maybe Switch might have more of a future in terms of legacy ports rather than new games
@Hypnotoad107 stupid people everywhere.
Xbox bought a whole publisher, an EA, a Square enix, a Sega, Sony buys developers how can you compare the two?
Who actually cares????
Just like with Nintendo having Mario and Sega having Sonic........ Nobody pissed and moaned that you couldn't play both on a single system.
It's called console exclusivity people
I dont freakin care at all... I think Xbox and Bethesda are putting the words in our mouth now... have your Starfield.. if I want to play it, I will just lunch it on my PC lol
not really interested in the game at all actually
@Col_McCafferty
Was looking forward to TES 6.
The only way I'll play it now is via GeForce Now after it's free on Steam or Epic stores (no Windows or Xboxes here)
@theMEGAniggle “Xbox bought a whole publisher, an EA, a Square enix, a Sega, Sony buys developers how can you compare the two?”
I can compare the two because Sony was trying to make ALL of Bethesda published games exclusive. Not some of them, all of them. MS said screw that, and just bought the publisher. Now they don’t have to worry about it. It’s much easier and cheaper for Sony to buy exclusivity because of their larger install base. Moves like that could have absolutely been a knockout blow to MS. They’re doing what they have to to maintain relevance. I’ll go even farther and say that the more and more third party exclusives that Sony purchases, the more studios we’ll see MS purchase. Xbox is obviously tired of the “no games” narrative.
@TheFrenchiestFry Disney just wants to use him in their movies. 🤪
@Hypnotoad107 Dont make up stuff mate timed is not fully exclusive. MS started the trend with COD.
MS only cares about the money departement you think they give a fu## about what we think. Just like Nintendo, Sony, Amazon, Disney, Apple, Google and whatever company in the world the only thing they care about is your money.
And funding a game is that a problem its not buying a company its working together by funding the games.
Dont worry mate if its not available i wont be playing it no problem.
@Dan_ozzzy189 what's the point of this comment? Some games run better on Xbox and some on ps5
Not fussed, it is in fact only hurting themselves, since their will be less sales. 7.8mill PS5's out in the world, and say an average of 1.5Mill of these would have purchased these games, then that's 1.5Mill x average price of $100, so it's really Zenimax loss, not the gamers.
Then again what's the difference with Ratchet and Clank, Spiderman, God of War? Nothing, these won't show on Xbox so technically there is no difference.
@Col_McCafferty so you wish for the game to fail because your fanboyism is blocking you from enjoying it? That's just sad
@arra1213 How many times do we have to tell you sales and views Don't matter. Not everything is black and white
@Flaming_Kaiser The only reason Sony didn’t go full exclusive is because they can’t afford it. And I completely agree that they all just care about the money. I’m just saying, I’m not sure why everybody is so butt hurt that MS bought a publisher. They were losing big, now they’re not losing by as much. They still got a long way to go. But they certainly have no reason to play by some set of imaginary rules that fans from the rival consoles make up. Sony got exclusivity on Spiderman, so I bought a PS5. MS has exclusivity on Bethesda games, so PS users can buy an Xbox… or play on their pc, or on their tablet, or phone, or on a tv app. It’s just business. I really don’t care who buys what, except that any time MS buys a studio, I get to play the game on Gamepass.
I understand why xbox bought Bethesda as without it they were losing relevance, even with gamepass without Bethesdas games or the hype of Bethesdas future games this gen would of been over quite quickly, but now they have given a reason to stick with xbox.
Sony will just make one of their own Sci fi Rpg's or an Rpg to rival elder scrolls and it will be better and less bug ridden.
In terms of fallout playstation players get stalker 2 and chernobylite which from gameplay we've seen looks way better and more polished than the fallout series.
@Envy just stating facts lol and doesnt matter though, only few buy a bethesda games on ps platforms, some of them probably owns a an xbox or pc, alot of them doesnt own a next gen system yet, if they are itching to play a bethesda game then they can get a series x instead of a ps5
@UltimateOtaku91 santa monica and sucker punch are the perfect ps studio to make a western rpg, guerilla can always go back on making scifi fps, they can apply all their knowledge from horizon to that project
@TheDaddyOtaku who doesn't own windows in this day and age. Are you so against MS you won't even use their products lol
Good thing Bethesda games suck hard like the suckiest suck that ever sucked.
Took that quote right out of the E3 poll, so I'm sure this is fine to say.
@johncalmc THIS! This is what bugs me really badly. I can't remember if it was part of the Series X reveal but Uncle Phil said Xbox don't believe in exclusives as a snide to Sony. A few months later buys Zenimax and pulls all the multiplatform to GP.
This is business and it doesn't bother me that MS did this because they needed to coming off a loss last gen. But the constant u-turning is just embarrassing and the Phil Spencer worshippers lap it all up. When he talks he reminds me of the directors commentaries from season 8 of Game of Thrones. Just making stuff up as they go along to fit the narrative.
Jim Ryan is another one of those too...
My mates and I are bought into all 3 console ecosystems but can't stand these two d***s.
potentially you could play the Bethesda games on pc or Xcloud via tv app or streaming stick no need to buy an xbox or even buy the game to play them
Who cares? Xbox needs exclusives.
@Envy it's called banter, just a throwaway ight hearted dig, look it up sunshine.
Haha its just funny the hypocrisy and virtue signalling going on. When Sony has exclusives it was 'anticonsumer' ... like even still last year haha (yes in the press)
Ms was beautiful to say they don't want to pay for game not release on other platform. Or exclusive next gen is counter to what gaming is about....
On and on, on and on .. so many facts....
Oh but Phil Spencer is beautiful and the Press loves him. Pass and pass and gamepass ad.
Jim Ryan though.. easy calling him a liar when the press completely butchered what he said.
Exclusives are fine. Just be honest about it from the reveal. Starfield was not revealed as an exclusive to start with. It was multiplatform. That's why it s jarring.
It would have been jarring either way. As a ps exclusive too.
Heavy joke is what it is.. Bet they didn't tell the market commission that they planned to stop selling the games to 80 million other users
This is good for gaming. Healthy competition. Microsoft need to come out swinging with some exclusives this gen. Hopefully this will propel Sony to even greater heights! (If that's even possible!)
We could be in for a heck of a generation here. I for one will be getting both consoles somewhere down the line. In no rush yet though - my PS4 pro is still alive and kicking!
I don't know what's worse: the condescending tone of the Beteshda guy or the rage from the gaming community about a game we basically have seen zero gameplay. I am not a fan of Beteshda games in the first place so...i am ok with it 💃
I don’t know why he has to be so obtuse. Simply say “Microsoft paid us 7.5 billion to halt development on all other platforms and we couldn’t turn that money down”.
@Shepherd_Tallon
'this PR spell that MS have over everyone '
It's mainly over the press and the crowd follows.
It's a vested interest. Strong competition and console wars (even if they pretend other wise) is good for them.
I'm not saying it's not good for gamers. sometimes it is, but the facts over fake narrative is always better.
Just make Naughty Dog's next assignment a space RPG to shut this down - job done!
On the topic in hand, though, now that the dust has settled on the deal, it is clear this was a desperate move by Microsoft to try and bridge the quality exclusives gap to Sony and paid enough money for Zenimax to forgo Playstation as a platform. It made business sense to both parties from that perspective.
But, as argued by others above, it was an anti-consumer move by Xbox/MS, I don't see why anyone would deny that. There are two ways to increase a platform's exclusive slate and attract people to your platform: (1) Create your own high quality exclusives (2) Take established IP away from your competition.
MS did number (2). These games were all heading to Xbox anyway, so they didn't gain anything from buying Zenimax except for taking the games away from Playstation and, to a lesser extent, Nintendo gamers.
It is possible for a deal to make sense business-wise, but be bad consumer-wise and this is one of those.
@JJ2 Agreed.
There are sites that are completely enamoured with Game Pass right now. Maybe because it's new, but also the perceived value. All of the reporting is very biased though.
Game Pass definitely has its pros for people who can't access a new console for example, but it also has its cons.
Personally I burned out on gaming a few years back because I was exhausted trying to keep up with everything (the trick being to just play what you actually enjoy, and not whatever is in the top 10).
Subscription services feel like that to me. Consume everything and consume it now.
It also feels like another nail in the coffin of ownership, but nobody cares about that anymore. Pay forever, own nothing.
@eshy76 I'm completely convinced ND's next game is Savage Starlight, the sci fi franchise Ellie loves in the first TLOU. I have NOTHING to base that on.
@Shepherd_Tallon
Yea I don't like GamePass and I don't like PSNOW either.
At the end of the day, it's a product a subscription service. It's asking for real money from consumers. Capping for it like they do feels really out of place.
@Shepherd_Tallon "the trick being to just play what you actually enjoy, and not whatever is in the top 10"
You have reached maximum wisdom - Platinum trophy unlocked! Exactly right...since I stopped fretting about my backlog and just played what I wanted, my gaming enjoyment has shot up! Just have to stop adding to said backlog...
And I hope you're right about Savage Starlight...In Dog We Trust!
@JJ2 That's an important point actually. I mention Game Pass, but PSNOW is in that same boat for me too.
@eshy76 That's exactly it though! I was playing games that were topping the charts but that simply weren't for me. The buzz from games (you know when you're in work and all you can think about is getting home to play that game) just wasn't there any more.
But when you cut out all of that noise and just play the games you really enjoy, that's magic. It feels like playing games when you were a kid again.
I've never been the biggest Bethesda fan to be honest. I've played a little bit of dishonoured, the doom remake and Wolfenstein. Starfield was never really on my list of must haves, I was just curious as to what it was all about. Seems a little no man sky-ish judging by the latest trailer. There was one shot in particular where I'm sure I was watching a Returnal trailer. Anyone else spot it?
Well time to boycott Bethesda and sell Skyrim from both my PS4 and PS3
@Dan_ozzzy189 Bragging is unnecessary. They had that honor during the Xbox 360/PS3 era. All multiplats were better on the Xbox console
Enjoyed Bethesda games but I won't buy a console just for them. It is what it is can we just move on already?
@Pusher2021 yeah I had a 360, best console ever, or maybe I should say my favourite.
"this is the game I want to make, these are the platforms I want to make it on, " - no, these are the platforms that your new masters are telling you to put it on. I just don't understand why even make this statement? You're not going to release any new stuff on Sony's consoles so why sit there and say "it's not our fault!" while in the background you can see someone counting the team-in-green's 7.5 billion dollars?
I don't blame Microsft for doing what they did but there is something slightly at odds with Phil 'exclusivity is bad' Spencer's almost daily comments.
Well, we can kiss goodbye to backwards flying dragons and game breaking bugs for a while at least. If PS5 crushes XBX in sales, maybe there could be some ports further down the road but I'm not holding my breath.
In the meantime, Sony need to start dusting off some old IPs and possibly make some new ones. MS has armed itself with some heavyweight RPG creators and I've not seen anything remotely interesting in that genre announced for the PS5 yet.
@Hypnotoad107 Lionhead? Ensemble?
They are no flowers either.
@eshy76 Honestly, i don't think it was good for Bethesda. It was only good for the execs that got the big bucks from the buy.
Bethesdas market just shrunk considerably. They will never again have a hit like Skyrim. They pretty much just shrunk their own market by at least 1/3.
I genuinely couldn't care less, the only game I'd be interested in from these people is Wolfenstein. Anyway I will eventually get a series x as a second console to the PS5 I get in the future. What sold the series x to me is, it's just more of the same as I get with my one x except with more power. My gaming future dreams are with the PS5 though.
I'm really not into the type of games Bethesda make.
@RizPlays
Yeah that'll really hurt them 😂
surprised I really don't care if I had an Xbox & Sony did this I would feel it way more because Xbox is a desert when it comes to games. Pushsquare can you stop going on about an Xbox studio now we get it!!
@tinCAT-zero well considering I bought it on PS3 PS4 with all expansions and then have probably spent about £2000 in the content store also got Skyrim vr was thinking about ESO and expansions ES6 Fallout 4 with expansions and then spend even more on that pre-ordered the collector's edition of both doom games and was gonna be buying even more when they all came out I think it will hurt them
@RizPlays
I'm not into them types of games at all.
Given Todd Howard's comment that he had some concerns about cutting out PlayStation console owners, it'll be interesting to see if any of the studios disband or key staff leave and launch under a different name outside of MS's control, given their past history with studios such as Rare.
@RizPlays You’re a big enough fan to spend £2000 on a game, but you aren’t willing to spend £15 to play it on n xcloud? I spent $40 to play Sunset Overdrive, and I would buy a PS5 just to play the sequel to that game.
@Envy I don't have time for crap software that doesn't work.
@Hypnotoad107 yeah cause Microsoft and Xbox software is horrible and doesn't work. I had the crystal limited edition of the original Xbox then got the limited edition 360 and every time they went kaput so got a PS3 in 2008 it's still working and I still have it so don't obviously do something right compared to stupid Microsoft piles of *****
Just went on the Xbox sister site to see what the other side thinks. Man, they really don't get it do they?
What MS have done with their purchase of Zenimax is completely different from Sony purchasing individual developers with whom they already have a long-standing relationship with.
Equating Sony buying ND with Xbox purchasing Bethesda is just so wrong.
My conclusion? Xbox gamers are stupid.
@sanderson72 Some key players left Rare before MS even bought them to form Free Radical (Timesplitters). Another group left Rare to form Playtonic and they made the underwhelming Yooka Laylee. Other than that, I’m not aware of mass exoduses from MS studios. I think the only reason this would happen is if MS stifles talent, which it doesn’t seem like MS is doing. If they’re writing paychecks and letting studios make what they want, why would they leave? I would think it would be most likely to happen at studios like 343 and Coalition that seem locked into single IPs. I would think that would get boring.
@Col_McCafferty Shocking that people that own the competitor’s hardware think a purchase that improves their ecosystem is a good thing. If Sony bought Bethesda, do you really think Sony players would be upset that they bought a publisher that they didn’t have a “prior relationship with”? You’re lying to yourself if you believe this message board would be filled with a bunch of upset PS fans after that acquisition.
@Hypnotoad107 I remember Rare losing a lot of staff after they were acquired by MS and had to make those poor Kinect titles.
Be interesting to see what Bethesda release for the Xbox S/X as I think that if sales are low or don't push Xbox sales, studios might be 'amalgamated' or similar and we know what that means.
@Hypnotoad107 Mate, the vast majority of games published by Zenimax were MP anyway. All they've done with this move is remove the capability to play the next Fallout or TES from PS owners.
I don't recall many PS gamers hoping Sony purchased Zenimax or Rockstar or Ubisoft. I think third party developers are important for the industry and it's dangerous if one company has owns the majority of the industry.
Buying a single developer whom you have supported and helped and have a relationship with is one thing. This is completely different and you know this.
I'm not expecting 'sympathy' from Xbox gamers, nor do I want it, but stop with the bs that it's the same as Sony buying Naughty Dog as well this bollocks that this move is about reaching more gamers when it's clearly the opposite.
Surely they can never stop ESO being on PS
@Col_McCafferty I’m not saying Sony players “wanted” it, but Xbox players weren’t asking for it before it happened either. I’m just saying, if Sony DID buy Bethesda, I sincerely don’t believe the vast majority of people posting about it here would have a problem with it. I also know Xbox players complained about Spiderman going exclusive after having access to Spiderman games for the previous 15 years on Xbox, but if Xbox would’ve gotten Spiderman as an exclusive, those same fans would be floating about it. I’m just saying, fans of each system make up these fake rules that the companies are supposed to adhere to that benefit their own ecosystem. Is what MS did with Bethesda different than what Sony did with Naughty Dog? Absolutely. But MS was quickly becoming irrelevant, and Sony was trying to buy exclusivity for ALL of the Bethesda games, so MS took action (because they have the money to do so). I definitely don’t blame them for trying to remain competitive.
@playstation1995 "But thats what x box did.they know they cant compete with PlayStation anyway so a starfield exclusive would be the icing on for PlayStation cake.sony is still outselling the x box.because they got better games.and ps5 ps4 is amazing.when was the last time x box beat PlayStation.never happened.sony will be on top as usual.and sony will buy studios.playstation 👑 crown.the g.o.a.t.word up son."
Does any of that matter?
No one cares about this dumb ***** except fanboys.
And just objectively, there's not a single compelling arguement for or against MS buying Bethesda here.
The value of console is not determined by how many more units it sells than its competitors. The value comes from how much you personally enjoy the experiences.
The value of a game is not how many awards it wins, nor how much it sells. But how much you enjoyed the experience.
If you're the kind of person that only buys exclusives, and your enjoyment seriously comes from being part of the group that "wins" the console generation, then you aren't a gamer, and you aren't enjoying the consoles and games as much as you claim you are. I bet there's Wii U owners who have had more genuine fun than you have.
And in general to this thread.
Yes it sucks that Bethesda games are now xbox exclusive. But that is not xbox gamer's fault. They aren't stupid for owning a console.
And if Bethesda games mean that much to you, I'm sure there'd be value in investing in an xbox or PC (hell, the series S is a fantastic price, so it's hardly a huge barrier).
Or, you could petition Sony to allow Game Pass on PS. You'd get the games for sure then.
And if you don't care about those Bethesda games, stop complaining. The only reason to complain if you "don't care" about Bethesda games would be if you were one of those aforementioned console war fanboys.
We have all sorts of social issues and communities being denied their right to live, and we have predatory gaming industry practices, and even less scummy (but still scummy) practices like timed exclusives, yet it's a first party game being a first party exclusive that's triggering people.
@Hypnotoad107 They were in talks regarding Starfield as a potential timed exclusive (lol) but not sure why you have made the leap that to them attempting to purchase Bethesda completely?
Of course Bethesda were owned by Zenimax and I'm not sure Sony had the cash to purchase the entire publisher.
Spidey? Well, blame Disney for that. They should've read the small print!
This is a dirty deal and it's designed to remove a number of established and popular MP IPs from off a competitors platform. That's it, end of.
I dont care about any other game eg starfield es6 etc because I will buy an xbox at some point but they cant expect people to start from scratch again on xbox if they take eso off ps
@get2sammyb People keep looking at this with a short term view, but it's the long term effects that worry me. Buying entire publishers in monopolistic behavior. We could be on a path to where there aren't many 3rd party AAA studios left down the road. If companies like Amazon and Tencent or maybe even Google join the bidding wars we could be in for some trouble. 10yrs from now people could be asking, "what happened to the video game industry and where did things go wrong?", and I'd point to this acquisition a major turning point.
I can understand Bethesda's hands being tied on this. I can also understand Microsoft wanting to get some big name brands under their belt. However it is dissapointing that existing franchises would now be split across consoles and PC. Like DOOM for example, I've got all of them on PS but if another comes out I've now gotta move to Xbox or PC. And even upcoming games that will still release on PS5 like Deathloop or Ghostwire, if they do well enough to release a sequel it most likely wouldn't come to PS. Therefore I am de-incentivised to buy these games on PS due to the potential of not being able to have the follow-up without forking out for another console or gaming PC. Just a bit of a messy situation all round.
It seems so long ago when the world was clowning Microsoft for not having exclusives. Now that they have some everyone's pissed. People be funny yo
Instead of wasting it on pointless things, let's direct that anger toward nintendo for not remaking mother 3. Do you know how incredible that game is??? And it's still stuck on the flippin Gameboy in Japan. There are bigger problems that need to be addressed people come on
Couldnt care less really, I'll just play it on Gamepass on PC if its any good, but I have a feeling its going to suck, just like Cyberpunk did.
But it's OK that Sunset Overdrive 2 will be an Exclusive on PS. Bethesda doesn't owe these crybaby babies *****. You want to play Bethesda games by an Xbox. Problem solve.
@MrDoug91 not really they have to make games people want to play & that is the hard part buying something is easy.
@Col_McCafferty Dude you are so salty. Bashing TES and Xbox gamers (which majority of Xbox owners own PlayStation so you're practically calling yourself stupid lol) just make you look sad tbh. It's not worth being so mad my guy. It really isn't...
@Envy Got any.evidence for your suggestion that the vast majority of Xbox games also own a PS?
No, of course not. The point still stands, MS helped out their baby division big time and in doing so have removed many popular IPs from the PS systems.
If they'd bought single developers and gave them the time and money to make great games I'd have some respect for that. This move is all about sticking two fingers up at PS gamers whilst cackling madly. They're pure scum.
@Envy if Sony bought ZeniMax. These salty people in the comment section will be singing a different tune. Notice how many of them want Sony to purchase other multiplat developer to counter the ZeniMax acquisition?
@Col_McCafferty majority of people I've met on Xbox owns a switch or PlayStation. Because they are gamers First and foremost and not fanboys lol. It's stupid to not own all platforms with all these great games coming out. It's all business, if Sony ends up buying square, I'll be quite happy because that just means more quality games from Sony which is a win
@BrainHacker yeah, honestly let Sony buy whoever. It's all it's gonna come down to in the next few years. If it means more better games then I don't really care. I just find it funny the hypocrisy of these people here
@Envy Sony had been aggressive when it comes to time exclusivity and keeping content from other platforms. I bet Sony would do the same thing if they have deeper pockets.
@Envy I strongly disagree that all gamers own and play on more than one platform. Bring me factual evidence or stop the lies.
@BrainHacker Yes, to counter but before we were quite happy with these major developers remaining third party and producing content available to all platforms.
I prefer their strategy of building relationships with small and independent developers, makes for more interesting and varied content.
Isn’t there a story on how Jobs called Microsoft all upset when they bought Bungie and took Halo off the MAC (exclusive at the time)
They can just drop cash as needed. Just ask Nokia.
@Col_McCafferty If you're really against the practice of "acquisition war". You wouldn't want Sony to counter the ZeniMax deal. That's where the hypocrisy starts to show tbh.
@BrainHacker I just wrote that I didn't want them to counter by buying a major third party developer.
🤦
Building relationships with smaller developers whom don't have major IPs on other platforms is completely different and you know it.
At the end of the day if I want to play the next Elder Scrolls game I won't be able to do so, not on PS anyway. Same goes for Fallout or Doom or even a potential sequel to Deathloop should it warrant one. I think that's pretty shoddy practice and really quite different to something like Uncharted which has only ever been on PS.
@Envy
maybe they rich too to be buying two consoles lol. I think most smart people only have one console
@BrainHacker Sony doesn't have to buy a studio. They already said they just going to build mutiple teams inside of the studios they have which is smarter than just buying everything up because you can. Now what if besteda still can't make games that are good? it will all be for nothing.
@Col_McCafferty exactly they can't cry about us having exclusives that have always been exclusives. Microsoft just took the future titles of multiplats off but I personally don't care. Never played a bethesda game anyway. We still have the games with the most quality.
I love the idea of Satya Nadella having $7.5 billion between the couch cushions. Gotta be a sectional, no doubt. Also, I'm not even mad about this. The Series S is very inexpensive and actually pretty easy to find right now. I don't see the harm in picking one up eventually.
@Col_McCafferty You just said "Yes, to counter". it's great that Sony is partnering up with smaller dev studios to create games for them like Housemarque and Deviation. But this is no different from MS buying Bethesda because they now own ZeniMax and they will be funding their future projects.
Both companies will own/owns the IPs that these devs will be working with, so they have the absolute right to release it on whatever platform they want it to be available.
@middyone " if besteda still can't make games that are good? it will all be for nothing." You can also apply it to Sony or even everything. Why try when it wouldn't work in the end anyway?
Don't care, I still won't ever buy an xbox.
@get2sammyb YES!!! One thing would be buying a small studio. Buying Bethesda was a sucker punch. Most of their games may have sold better on PS4.
This is why ive bought each console Microsoft , Nintendo and sony for exclusives. I love playing video games i also keep my past consoles in working order to. its how i relax and unwind. im not fussed as long as i get a retail disc or cartridge for the switch.
I feel for people who maybe don't have the budget to buy multiple consoles or have a decent enough PC, but one small positive is the Cloud streaming option will be there. Obviously no where near the same as a local experience, but for people of a budget, better than nothing.
I have a Series X, no PS5 at the moment.
I do not care about Starfield.
@QualityGeezer No, ZOS have already confirmed that ESO will remain on all the platforms - with only Stadia looking dicey.
The game is already written (so doesn't come under the new titles rules) and the zone updates are viewed as maintenance/DLC enhancements.
Plus, it's a large cash cow for ZOS so getting rid of PS support would be cutting off a serious continuous revenue stream.
The PS4 will keep getting the new zones and the PS5 and XBX have had the console enhanced client update (think it should be out now?)
Guess I won't be buying any Bethesda games ever again
This is good news kind of the whole competition being better 4 the consumer is true just look at gaming history 1 platform holder is always miles ahead the next gen that same platform becomes arrogant and anti consumer whilst the other bends over backwards 4 players. I do need some clarification though as when xb bought bethesda they said anything already announced would be multi platform still and starfield and Es6 were announced years ago so what happened there??
Sony have the talent to make alternatives, they should do a Fallout alternative soon, Obsidian came back from a long break and knocked out the outer worlds which was at least as good as any Fallout game, Sony can do the same.
I liked the E3 trailer for Starfield. I also liked the video on YouTube showcasing the creative process in the making of it. It is false and unfair to say that there is not creative passion behind Bethesda's games just because of the Microsoft acquisition. I am, off course, sad that I will not be able to play Starfield on PS5.
It would be great if Sony have a nice space exploration RPG game running on PS5 as a response to Starfield, but unless there is already one in the oven, it is almost impossible to have one ready by the time Starfield launches.
Maybe Sony should go explore the industry to find out who is making the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake (Aspyr?) and have a chat with them.
@middyone “we still have the games with the most quality” true for some tastes, not all.
3rd person Narrative Action/Adventure - Definitely!
Multiplayer/Arena - that goes to multiplats like COD but in the exclusive arena it’s MS
Platformers - Ratchet and Clank is amazing but this goes to Nintendo
Sports - All systems now have all sports games
Japanese RPG - tied with Nintendo based on preference
Western RPG - arguably MS now
Racing - Forza is regarded as top of this tier now
Strategy - probably PC but I’m not as familiar with these
Point is - there are lots of types of games people enjoy and Sony studios are really only masters of a couple of them. Many people also enjoy other game types to change it up and the new reality is other platforms offer better experiences for those tastes.
@Col_McCafferty Pragmata from Capcom might scratch the sci-fi epic scratch...
As for a proper western RPG, you've got me there.
@xMightyMatt14x I agree with half of these statements. Obviously everyone has different tastes but an huge majority agree with this statement. the attention to detail, narratives, and quality of gameplay goes to PlayStation i've heard a huge amount of people agree with.
They have a variety of games and people who say "all their games are the same 3rd person whatever" is insane.Their working on providing mutiplats by starting a new studio just for that for this new generation from what i've heard. I personally don't play alot of multiplats and prefer single player but that's good to hear for people who do. What popular multiplat does ms have besides halo?
ratchet and clank is not a platformer from what i've seen. You're thinking of games like astro's playroom which is fantastic btw. They just made the studio that made that game a first party studio so I think they will be able to complete with nintendo soon enough. I disagree with ms having the western rpgs. They bought one studio and until we see them actually release them. It's safe to say that goes to sony.
why is forza regarded as top of the racing lol. from what i've heard it's unrealistic and people prefer gran Turismo. correct me if i'm wrong because I don't know much about the racing games competition. Point is - there are lots of types of games people enjoy and Sony studios are really only masters of a couple of them. Many people also enjoy other game types to change it up and the new reality is other platforms offer better experiences for those tastes.
I still stand by sony studios making the best games and putting the most effort into them. They have variety. people just got to look. I enjoy changing up as well and I think nintendo is great but the reality is the majority of what they have are platformers and xbox doesn't offer anything on their own yet while they are providing all their games on pc.
@middyone I agree about 3rd person narratives going to Sony and I also actually agree that they are putting effort into variety. My point wasn’t that they only made 3rd person narrative games, but that only really in that genre could Sony claim to be the masters at the top. I wasn’t saying they didn’t have offerings, but that outside of the 3rd person narrative (GoW, Spider-Man, Naighty Dog stuff) their other offerings aren’t as highly regarded. Not bad but not on top. They are “enjoyable” and “fun” in the same way other offerings are but not “above” other offerings.
To go back to some specifics, with Forza vs GT, the only fan base that rates GT higher is inside the Sony ecosystem due to brand preference. Metacritic alone has critical (and user although we all know those can manipulated) scores solidly Forza above the GT series basically for the last decade. Reputation within the wider gaming population sees this as well. This doesn’t mean GT is bad, but to believe the GT series is regarded as the top tier, cream of the crop by more than just those inside the Sony echo chamber is false. That would be like me trying to argue the Gears series (which is still fairly well regarded) is above God of War or Uncharted. I could only do that if I was so stuck in the Xbox ecosystem I didn’t want to give Sony any credit. That’s basically how the argument of GT over Forza can be viewed.
With platformers, everyone knows Nintendo is king. Sony’s offerings show promise but nothing on the level of Nintendo yet. Could they get there? Yeah. But that remains to be seen.
This kinda leads me to Western RPGs. How is it that you give Sony credit for “potential” future on platformers with things like the developing Astro series, but not MS credit for the “potential” future of their Western RPGs based on the quality of their studios in this genre now? That’s kinda a double standard to say “Sony will prove themselves soon enough (in platformers)” while simultaneously saying “MS still has to prove they can make a good western RPG” even though literally they own now some of the highest regarded studios ever in that genre. Both standards should be applied equally and either we count Sony’s potential in platformers AND MS’s potential in western RPGs or we count neither because they’re not “officially” there yet.
As for mp shooters, Halo’s story for 5 was awful, but MP still seen as one of the best. The Gears series also has highly regarded MP. Sea of Thieves started rough but is now one of the most respected online experiences, but due to its nature I’d include it here as opposed to a story game. What’s hard about this genre is almost every other MP game (which are the top level like COD) are on all systems. Halo and Gears might be all MS has in this department, but Sony and Nintendo have nothing in the exclusive department here. So this category has to go to multiplats/MS. .
@middyone My overall point wasn’t that Sony “only offers 3rd person narratives”. But I also don’t think that other genres within Sony studios get to ride the coattails of the God of Wars, Last of Us’s, etc. you can’t say Sony has the best games across the board, and then only really have examples in one genre where you can definitively show with reviews and reputation that they are superior. If they have the best across the board, then their exclusive offerings in those other genres also have to be “the best” and that’s just not true. If we’re going to make an argument for the “best” in gaming for everyone, we should consider that people have different tastes, and not all of those tastes lead to Sony as the best offering
My need for this game is akin to my need for a hole in my head
@xMightyMatt14x oh i see what you're saying. I can't say sony is the best in all categories because I don't play all categories so I can agree with that bro. when I say the games with the most quality. I don't mean every type of game if you get what i'm saying. I'm saying as far as overall best exclusives(not in all categories but the ones that get talked about the most). They have them and i'm sure nintendo is great with exclusives too but I rarely hear anybody mention their exclusives as being the best but they definitely in second place I think. I agree no studio is the best in all categories.
Ok so I just went to metacritic since you mentioned it and did a little research. So what i've come to understand is that as far as the critics are concerned. They say the last forza that came out was a better than gran Turismo sport but the user score for both is not good with only a little separating them so they both can't be considered on top. Especially when a few years ago gran turismo with it's first 3 entries had over the hightest score than what metacritic has ever gave forza ever. Correct me if i'm wrong. While the last 3 entries have been below the latest entries in forza. You can't say the only fan base that rates gt higher is inside the sony ecosystem. There is obviously going to be the people who have both consoles and you can't count pc because if we're going to compare a sony exclusive with a xbox game that is available on pc also. We cannot count what they say so it really is an even competition. Also forza has released 3 games each for each generation while sony only releases a mainline gran turismo once every gen so we are only counting the mainline forzas. so you can't believe the GT series or forza series is regarded as the top tier, cream of the crop. they are both false and this upcoming games might be the tie breaker. Again not counting what pc says because they more than likely haven't played gran turismo but have played forza. Not even fair competition.
As far as I can see. These are two most popular racing games that are in competition. Can't really say the same about gears being the most popular narrative game xbox has to offer like uncharted or god of war.
I wasn't giving sony credit for potential future platformers. All I was saying is that it looks like they could catch up to nintendo but until then nintendo is king. the difference is that nintendo and sony have proved themselves at providing themselves with consistent top tier exclusives in their respective genres. Bestatha was either hit or miss before xbox bought them and I'm sure most people like me are waiting to see if they can deliver. Xbox doesn't have the same brand trust to deliver non stop greats yet so I can't give them credit yet. If they prove themselves like their competition has, I will change my tune quickly. There is no double standard with me at least.
agreed. multiplayer needs to improve. I'm not too proud to admit it.
@xMightyMatt14x overall I agree with other genres within sony not being as big as god of war etc. I wasn't saying that sony has the best games across the board but in the mainstream. There is no argument they have the most quality and consistent great exclusives more than their competition with nintendo as a close second. I can't speak for every genre because I don't think any one person likes playing every genre.
Definitely not because everyone has different tastes but I stress the majority say they have the best quality exclusives. Definitely not in every genre. Hope you understand what i'm trying to say
@middyone ok I get that. That makes sense.
@xMightyMatt14x nice chatting with you man
Sony should buy Rockstar Games (or Rockstar Games, Sony). Lol
@Olmaz yeah there’s a lot if false equivocating going on. I own a series x but sony is by far my preferred platform, and it’s they’ve slowly cultivated this true family of devs that basically runs the AAA single-player narrative driven market. Zeni-Max was a real competitor for a long time, and I do really like Machine, iD and Arkane, but let’s face it, BGS fell off big time with 76. I enjoyed fallout 4 but man could you feel the creation engine’s age. I’ll check out starfield but i’m not anywhere near as excited for that as I am for GoW:R, H:FW, etc. its not even my most anticipated bethesda published game as ive really enjoyed what machine and id have been doing far more than bgs. Basically, there’s alsways going to be an issue with going out and overnight buying your reputation. Now Xbox can claim to be a big player in single-player narrative driven games! In the end, really i feel like its a 7.5 billion dollar investment inti gamepass, and im sure you could argue the merits of that. I just respect sony a lot more. Cultivating relationships and developing an identity are not easy things to do. Obviously its much easier to just buy your way into the club.
@Nem And Insomniac shrank their market by a third when Sony bought them.
Let's stop pretending that Sony is some wonderful morality beacon shining a light throughout the games industry. Sony, MS and Nintendo have been buying outright/controlling stakes in developers for as long as they've been in the videogame industry. Every single one of those developer purchases limited the games to those platform makers. They're multinational corporations that want your money rather than anyone else having your money. The difference with this deal is that neither Sony or Nintendo could have possibly made that purchase. Would they have done something similar if they could afford to? Absolutely they would have. Execs at Sony and Nintendo don't stay awake at night worrying about Xbox players not being able to play their exclusives. And the shareholders certainly don't.
In my opinion Nintendo has always had the best genuinely in-house games output during the entire span of the industry. They have produced amazing games from 1985 - Present using only their own teams. Neither Sony or Microsoft can claim anything close to that internal legacy. Not studios that have been bought/acquired/nurtured. Actual genius Nintendo employees who have shaped the industry as a whole.
I'm a multiplatform gamer and I appreciate all of my PlayStations, Xboxes and Nintendo consoles and I love the different things they offer gaming.
@Gooseuk nah deathloop looks crap, doom bores me to tears although wolfenstein new order i quite liked, but the sequels not so much.
Doesn't bother me one way or the other really since I play on PC as well. To put it bluntly, Bethesda games really aren't all that great to begin with on consoles. Had it not been from mod creators and the ability to use mods and patches that fix their games, most Bethesda games wouldn't really be worth playing beyond one playthrough. Sure, it sucks I suppose but it's not like PS fans didn't see this coming when MS announced they bought Bethesda.
So PS fans mess with Xbox fans for not having exclusives, but they also get pissed when they have them. Got it.
@Dan_ozzzy189 Yea it does and it looks even worse on the ps4 and ps4 pro.
@__jamiie did they? Their main seller was spiderman which was PS exclusive. Ratchet and clank too.
So, no, i don't think it's the same. Insomniac had worked as second party with Sony for quite a while. They never saw huge sucess outside it.
@Nem Yes they did. Would Spider-Man sell more if it was on other platforms?
Yes. That's a fact. They shrank their potential market because the deal with Sony made sense to them. And that's absolutely fine. Nothing wrong with it all in my opinion.
The Bethesda deal with Xbox obviously made sense to them and their shareholders. And again, I'm fine with that. Could Bethesda sell more games if they were available on all platforms?
Yes. That's another fact.
I just want people to stop pretending that every company isn't out for their own platform's success.
Eh... Just buy a series X no big deal. I don't understand why some gamers HAVE to stick to a certain console brand, these companies will all take your money the same way and literally couldn't care less about you, they care about the money and have zero loyalty so your loyalty is mis-founded and one directional
@Yaycandy ye if Sony wasn't such selfishness with games games would be better all games to be available on all platforms they can't really cry about it because they've been selfish enough to keep all the games themselves before and now Bethesda is Xbox exclusive now they're crying about it it's like earth to reality you kept the games yourself a very long time
@Mad001 no one won'ts to no how rich you are
@Devlind sad rely isent it
@Matt2018 lol i wish good one 🤣😆😂👍
@Matt2018
Yep thats how it works and should work. If Xbox had good exclusives, i would buy an Xbox. Simple as that, i dont care for console wars yet it does help push the tech. If i gotta buy 3 consoles again like i did in 2001 with Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube, thats fine. Good games sell consoles.
Now if its 1 or 2 Xbox games i want to play, im sure it will play on my gaming PC just as good.
If Xbox wants console sales they need to have console exclusives. Its been simple logic for Sony since 1995. If i wanna play a Playstation game, gotta buy a Playstation.
Never changed
Fu-em. Microsoft wants to play dirty and buy a high profile already established triple aaa studio! Thats dirty! Xbox sucks so bad they have to use their Microsoft money to try to have anything to play. Still gonna end up garbage games that will never surpass what Sony already done. God of war TLOUS Spider-Man FFVII and so on so on. So suck it and still play with a controller that looks the same for past 10 years that uses batteries. Yea and halo is for nerds and virgins ahhaaah
@Yaycandy I don't know it just feels like it alienateing fans the systems anit cheep this is why I stick with xbox only as the games are good and more are on the way and will run better with the xtra horse power just cba to buy a playstion just to play a handful of games find it selfish if Sony can bring exclusives to pc the. Its not that hard to shear then is it I just feel like if people won't xbox thay go xbox if people won't Sony then go Sony but it. Should not stop the players playing everything like pcs I still think the hardwere would sell that's why it will be down to the best features instead of games
@__jamiie Of course they are.
But, the point is Sony built those IP. It wasn't Insomniac making them by themselves and then Sony swooping in.
In the case of Bethesda it was a complete buyout. Microsoft wasn't there building the IP's with Bethesda.
If you want a Sony example that bad, it's Psygnosis.
I don't think Sony is any saint. They pulled this before too and a good publisher was lost.
Yes, it's business. That is why there is no need for apologies. Some higher ups got fat payouts and what's left will pay the bills until they can't anymore and the thing dissolves.
I think someone said it well. Microsoft didn't buy exclusives. They removed them from playstation. Those games were gonna land on Xbox regardless. No one really gained from this except the ones that got the payout.
@Nem Wow. I actually had to scroll back to see what annoying point I was harping on about.
I'm a console gamer and will pretty much buy every system available (I received a Sega Saturn as a present for my last birthday). As I've said before, IF Sony or Nintendo could have made the Bethesda purchase, they would have.
@nessisonett A platform having exclusives has never bothered me, I and many other old giffers grew up in an era when that's pretty much what distinguished them and we all lamented how they all became multiplat to the extent that defining a USP was more down to resolution and what your friends decided to also purchase. I think in this instance however MS are doing their anti-competitive act again, pretty much like what they have always done in the software business (see internet explorer), whilst attempting to convince the masses they actually give a ***** about the gaming community - it's laughable and cringeworthy at best.
I actually have a series S of my own, a series X i bought for my kid so we can play together and a PS5. Whilst GP is great value for money i seem to spend a lot of time filtering through the dross looking and hoping for something gripping to play and rarely finding anything above what id personally score a 7/10. On the flip side i know the big hitters are on the PS but I refuse to spend 70 quid on a title and am still waiting for them to drop significantly in sales etc so whilst i prefer my PS in many areas it is barely getting used which is a shame.
It's obviously disappointing that Bethesda is now an xbox exclusive, but on the other hand they are a company that produces very little games at such a slow rate that PS players will barely even notice. I have an Xbox Series S so i'll likely snap up Starfield, but would prefer to play it on the PS5.
@CulitoSucio im glad this games not on ps5 this games its totaly garbage
