Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the narrative-based third-person misadventure from Eidos Montreal, will not have microtransactions. While it’s depressing that articles like this have very much become a thing, some fans had worried that the release would follow in Marvel’s Avengers’ footsteps – but that’s fortunately not the case.
There will be unlockable costumes in the game, but you’ll be able to earn these through gameplay – although it is worth noting that there are a handful of additional outfits being made available as pre-order bonuses. Nevertheless, the developer is focusing on creating a high-quality, narrative experience, without any of the live service nonsense that’s infecting everything else.
Has this increased your interest in the release, or were you simply unimpressed with what you saw at E3 2021? Hold out for a hero in the comments section below.

Looking forward for this one. That's even better news that the game will not have micro transactions. Comparing to Ubisoft, that they didn't even release a game and already talking about DLC. Miss the time when you where paying for a full game from the get go. It's time for people to rise up to this practice and stop Ubisoft and other publishers from milking dry their costumers and followers.
Its like they want a medal for these things now.
when they confirmed it to be SP only, that boosted their sales.
I like what they've showed so far! This will definitely come to my collection!
I don't mind Microstransactions because I simply don't feel the need to own anything. As long as I can play the campaign uninterrupted, I could not care less about extra costumes, etc.
Unless reviews closer to launch are bad, I'm definitely picking this up day 1. Was so happy when they said it is a single player RPG and not another Avengers type game which I didn't buy because of that!
My brain automatically translates "no micro transactions" to "yes macro transactions". 🤑
Translates almost definitely to ..... "Until we decide it will after launch".
Game looks fun and interesting. I'm hoping the final product runs better and has a 60fps mode. The performance looked a bit rough and it's not even a visually impressive game. Hopefully you can tone down the in battle quipping too...
"won't" yeah sure, and I'm the queen of England 🙄🙄😏
@Flaming_Kaiser look at me being ethical! Please buy my game! I promise I won't Rob you blind! While takes wallet sneakily without you realising
Sorry but when a company clarifies this I feel like theres a little asterisk at the end with the words 'for now' attached. This isnt always the case but so many games have backtracked on this
@Flaming_Kaiser or a cookie. Personally, I'd take the cookie 😋
This is the E3 game I'm most interested in, I hope it turns out well
Welcome news to be honest. While they shouldn’t have to clarify, it’s probably needed after Avengers.
Looks way better than any other games we saw this weekend except maybe the Plague Tale follow-up but I hope this doesn't mean we won't get expansions if the game's successful.
I'm happy that it's single player and story driven and it looks decent but.....I dunno man I think I've been too spoilt by Insomniac's Spider-Man. Every Marvel game since has looked really underwhelming and I don't know if it's just me but the visuals in this don't look as good as Spider-Man which was a bloody 2018 game like are Insomniac just that far ahead of everyone else? Also why can we only play as Quill that blows I wanna play as Mantis ( btw she looked amazing 😍😍😍) and Rocket they're my favourites 😭
Truthfully this is the only game I am interested in so far from E3 season. That Final Fantasy game looks TERRIBLE.
I liked the first part of the game presentation, but I think they over extended themself. That gameplay segment with the terrible frame rate issue, really hurted the game. I am looking forward to it, but after what they did with Avengers, I am very cautious.
Single player, no microtransactions and humorous banter/ writing - I'm in when it goes on sale (that Avengers burn is still too fresh)
Ok this one is a bit of a personal rant: I'm so tired of these movie franchises being everywhere.
I don't like superheroes at all, so this Marvel infested era really is starting to grate me a bit after 10+ years of superheroes everywhere, but that's not the main point.
The main point is that we already have great and beloved video game franchises, we don't need another boatload of Marvel/DC games every freaking year, especially if they give it to Eidos instead of having them work on Deus Ex, a new IP or something they want, whatever that may be.
I play videogames because I like videogames, and videogames already have their own series and mythos. Don't take that away just to give rabid Marvel fan the zillionth project with the same characters.
I mean, don't Marvel fans ever get tired? Don't they like something else too from time to time? Lol
The trailer didn't do much for me but i'm glad it is single player, not a live service and doesn't have micro transactions. Will keep an eye on it.
lies, lies, lies... one month prior to release tablesturn. Believe me.
Much more interested than I was prior to E3 but still not completely sold. Gameplay didn't seem that great but I'm hoping future showings will change that. The devs seemed to get the humor of Guardians of the Galaxy right, that's a plus.
@clvr Are these things stopping you from enjoying other stuff? Did Marvel movies stop Tenet coming out? Did Disney green lighting Marvel shows stop Nomadland being made? I don’t see how this inconveniences you. I don’t like Telenovelas but there’s more of them every year. They satisfy their base and I can move on to what I want. If people getting Marvel things doesn’t actively stop you from enjoying things you usually enjoy, I don’t get what the problem is? It’s a shame we don’t have a new Deus Ex, I agree, I love that series, but if the team want to work on something else fair play. If they’re being forced to work on Marvel, that’s a shame, but it’s also hasty to assume that all a dev wants to do is work on the same series all the time
I wasn’t impressed by the gameplay at all, but if Dan Abnett is involved in writing, this could be a really good story. He’s written the best Guardian comics
...At launch.
Sorry but I'll believe it when I see it. A game like this is a perfect money maker for microtranactions. Too many times have I seen that statement only for the microtranactions to appear shortly after the reviews fall silent.
Honestly, Far Cry 6 has been the best part of e3 this year (Well halo infinite looked cool but I don't have an Xbox) hopefully Nintendo pulls through with something.
@clvr I don't see your point.... We play videogames for the fantasy? the superhero fantasy is a very desired one? and tie in games have always been a thing they just died down as of recent. also even taking your problem at face value, Square enix is still releasing 2 final fantasy titles a revamp of a previous remake and many more projects. Its not like its the company's only game in development
I opened with "this is a personal rant" in order to avoid the kind of defensive reply like @ShadowofSparta's, which I find very annoying and hypocritical, but it seems that that isn't enough.
Me tired of 10 years of Marvel everywhere is an abhorrent opinion, but you disliking my opinion in the same way is okay?
Telling me to ignore Marvel content while not ignoring my take is kinda funny.
I'm glad for the fans who can play and enjoy the games, of course, I'm not taking anything away from anyone.
Can I just say I'd rather devs make projects they created and are passionate about, rather than phoned-in tie-ins which will remain as footnotes in gaming history?
I'm sure GOTG will be good and Eidos will love working on it, don't get me wrong, but how much creative risk can you take with a huge licensed franchise compared to your own IP?
Or are we arguing that Marvel's Avengers was time better spent than Tomb Raider?
@Breezy141 that wasn't the point; I've seen the announcements.
"They still make other games" is not a point, sorry.
I'm fine with superhero games and everything existing, but nowadays it's like there's a superhero everywhere: games, movies, series, everywhere Marvel, DC, The Boys, Invincible...I find it a bit much personally, can I?
I find it annoying cause I never said these things are bad, I'm just saying I'm tired of this oversaturation; nonetheless, my opinion must be countered cause it offends superhero fans.
@clvr Superheroes have been every where since the 90s. It didn't now just started cropping up out of the blue in the last 10 years... If you only just now starting noticing it that really on you.
@clvr I’m not defending the Marvel franchise, lord knows bloody Corps don’t need me to defend them, I just don’t see your issue. How is it hypocritical? I don’t even dislike your base opinion, it’s perfectly fine to think media is oversaturated with superhero films, a lot of people share that opinion, but you’re making it seem like that’s all the industry is producing, which it isn’t. Whilst there is a lot more then perhaps before, it’s just wrong to insinuate that it’s putting a stranglehold on creativity in general.
Hypocritical for not ignoring your take? Ignoring the fact that’s consuming media is different to consuming an opinion on a fan site, the situations aren’t alike, I thought it would be worth offering a different perspective.
There are handful of developers making Marvel games. That is not over-saturation. List out all the Marvel games in development amongst all the other games in development and calculate the percentage. Limit to major studios if you like, and it will still not be a big percentage. It will still be small. Instead, there’s a much bigger focus on what few Marvel games there are because Marvel is a big IP right now so the media will gravitate towards them and constantly churn out any updates related to them. It’s a focusing illusion.
All I’m saying is that if you see the actual proportion of Marvel games, it doesn’t seem like a big issue. That’s not even accounting for the fact that making a Marvel game does not mean you can’t be creative. Marvel are actually pretty open to reimagining some of their heroes and series, so there’s nothing to say a team would be limited in what they can do. Just look at some of the comics runs they’ve had. Look what’s happened to the X-men right now, they have their own island and government and had a recent run that told stories over 3 timelines at the same time. You could even make a Tomb Raider-ish game starting Hawkeye if you really wanted to. Maybe the devs are passionate about it too. Maybe they grew up with comics, who wouldn’t want to make a game about their heroes?
I’m as butthurt as anyone I’m still waiting for the sequel to Mankind Divided, but to blame the fact that a couple of sequels I want aren’t coming out due to the superhero genre just seems so weird to me. There’s a lot more out there
@huyi Did they say on release because they could pull a Activision on us and patch it in. 😅
@Breezy141 If thats the high point.....
I dont mind small microtransaction like they did in MHW but FFS dont do DLC characters or any of that other ***** like in fighters where 70% of the roster is behind a paywall. If you want to do some special costumes besides the ones i can unlock no problem just dont make it to bad.
@clvr oh no I'm no superhero fan. I actually am kinda tired of the oversaturation too and I never really have fun with them (with the exception of the Batman Arkham games, those things rule.) your point just made absolutely no sense to me. what you were saying was basically "there's no room for these games in the industry" and talking like Square mf Enix of all companies is going to delay the next final fantasy or tomb raider or dragon quest etc because they have a B team working on a marvel tie in, my argument wasn't "there are other games being made" it's "this doesn't affect the other properties Square Enix is working on and works as huge fanservice to fans of Marvel products." I guarantee something like marvel avengers being in development didn't stall the development of a cash cow like final fantasy, for instance. sure it may not be your thing, but there are plenty of other things coming out and as i said before, the superhero fantasy is something a lot of people love. to sum it all up: no, I'm not an offended superhero fanboy. I just thought your point was ridiculous.
@Flaming_Kaiser Lets just pray there's a cool smash bros DLC fighter or something ;(
This game already seems like a step up from trashy avengers in many respects. Only wish they'd do something about the crappy character models. Not necessarily make them more like their mcu counterparts... just make them more interesting?
@ShadowofSparta @Breezy141 had a really bad day and a couple of beers at night, sorry guys.
That was an idiotic take and you are absolutely right, I apologize and I wish you a great day/night.
I'll avoid posting when I'm inebriated from now on 😅
Great news if true, let's hope they don't reverse course and add them after launch.
