It’s hardly a surprise anymore really, but Sony will seemingly be skipping Gamescom 2021 next month, as the organisation retains its silent ritual. Outside of a couple of cameo appearances during Geoff Keighley’s opening keynote Summer Games Fest, the company completely avoided the digital version of E3 2021 – and it doesn’t look like it’ll be attending its German counterpart either.
This year’s Gamescom will be a digital affair, but the organiser claims that a bunch of partners have signed up, including the likes of Bandai Namco, Activision, Xbox, Electronic Arts, SEGA, and Ubisoft – all of the big boys, then, apart from Sony Interactive Entertainment. We triple-read the list and even tried CTRL+F just to be certain – nuh-uh, not there.
To be fair, the press release is written in such a way that more could be added at a later date, but don’t hold your breath. Like last year, Keighley will host a livestream event named Opening Night Live, with many of the abovementioned partners expected to participate. Sony, presumably, is too busy washing its hair.
The show will get underway from 25th August to 27th August.

Come on Sony, give us a little something something, jeez!
Basically everyone except Sony! It’s a bit annoying to be fair but I’m sure there’ll still be PS5 games announced, just from third parties.
At this point, I'm almost sure they are planning their own event sometime in the next 3 months.
This could really end up hurting Sony in the long run if they continue to ignore highly publicized events. Let's hope they have something in store soon. It's never smart to be too overconfident.
They’re own event is bigger than everyone else being at Gamescom anyway?
Always is when they go alone
I hope next year sony will bring back psx like in ps4 days, sony only need 1 (big) event peryear
Sony is doing Nintendos 2020 strategy by not doing anything at all
inb4 "Gamescom is an irrelevant relic"
Sony pretty clearly has very little to show off atm and doesn't want to highlight that by attending these events. They're barely able to fill time in short State of Play events.
Let's hope Sony have some sort of a big event in August and not just another 30 minutes State of Play stream
I think they will do just cameos at these events now.
they will have something planned but it won't be for these events anymore by the looks of it.
They haven't done a Gamecom press conference in years - I think 2014 was the last time they did one. There were recent patent updates on PlayStation Expierience - so hopefully they have their own big show sometime soon.
Ive accepted that Sony annoys the hell out of me at this point and they will not do what made me enjoy them in the past.
Hopefully they pull their finger out soon, it breaks my heart to see Norman Reedus crying like that😥
Don't worry that Wired interview is coming right around the corner!
But for real it is a bit surprising how quite they've been this year but I'm not worried. I just primarily want to know if Horizon is this year or not. I think it's delayed at this point but confirmation would be nice.
Sony seems to be too confident with their blockbuster games that they feel one or two of their exclusive games a year will suffice. No doubt that the PS5 will be successful but I doubt their tactics will be on the same level as the PS4 era. Who knows, maybe PSX is all we can hope for.
@Jacko11 Assuming they actually plan to do their own event. To be honest, it's looking unlikely, isn't it?
They haven't been on gamescom for a while.
Also, I don't see Nintendo on the source link.
@Zombie9ers They usually participate in the show, though. Appreciate it's different this year as it's not a physical event, but Sony has been burrowing its head in the sand for most of 2021 now.
@redapt You're right, it looks like it's been removed. Will edit the article, thanks!
@mrtennis1990
I think you over-rate how many people take any notice of this stuff.
If you listen to social media or hang out in comment sections, its big news because people are after almost anything to get a 'hit' on their site, but in reality, the vast majority of Sony's customers wont care.
That's not to say they can get away with showing nothing, but if they have a decent show in August as is expected, then that's fine and more than enough together with the state of plays.
Why dance to anyone else tune? These digital events are pretty worthless anyway, I have no issue with them doing their own.
I dont really care if Sony dont do the big events. But what i do want them to provide is a communications roadmap if they are avoiding the trade shows.
Like it or not, they are a business and need to engage with their customers. It's no good for them to stick their fingers in their ears and pretend these events are not happening, when their compeitors are marketing themselves to a global audience.
Sony should be saying, ok guys. We wont be at GamesCom.this year, but look out for our next state of play or showcase in August (or whatever month it is). It stops the accusations of Sony being aloof, and it gives us something to look forward to (and plan for, rather than being expected to fit in with Sony's timetable with a couple of days notice)
Also they HAVE to be at Tokyo Gameshow. Right?
Playstation is bigger than all of them https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OGC.f2eba8c26c8afbdd56ec07b19ac73d47&pid=Api&rurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedia.giphy.com%2fmedia%2f3o85xGocUH8RYoDKKs%2fgiphy.gif&ehk=MJ2rOzW1XurweD5gnsgvA0qrHSMHzvcK9HdQfNhHAfE%3d
@Zombie9ers Yeah. But that cause Gamescom came right after E3, so they decided to do shows at Paris Games Week... But with this year them not showing any significant at E3. You would expect them to maybe show up at GamesCom then.
@mrtennis1990 Very much agreed. After the underwhelming State of Play that just happened, this isn't welcoming news at all. I also hope they have something SUBSTANTIAL planned.
This is disappointing. Sony has to be careful to not miss out on too much mindshare skipping all these events, especially because they are not putting out State of Plays often enough.
who cares of "own event"?
I've said this before, but Sony being uncommunicative and going out of their way to share as little info with us as possible has become their new MO.
So of course they're going to skip events that would require them to give us something to be at least mildly excited for.
I miss the days we used to get a Sony show at E3, Gamescom and PSX in one year…
Im a Sony fan and I just hope all this comes back to bite them in the ass. These type of decisions Sony has been making has lead to me not buying a PS5. It might be the first generation that I actually don't buy a console at all and just stick with my PS3/PS4.
Too cool for school 😋
If sony is doing this, so they could have a showcase to themselves, ala state of play-like, then great. But if they're doing this because most, if not all, games are crossgen or delayed, smart of them to not want to bring attention to it.
I think Sony need to start doing something, we are getting limited information at the moment, and then randomly they drop big new such as vr. I would much prefer if they said we are doing 2 in-house events every year, and keep state of play for games releasing in a month or so. At least then they can keep information and twice a year just drop new upcoming games and fill those events with new information and keep the fans happy.
Guess PlayStation is too big for the videogame industry now.
They are acting like Zeus on Mt Olympus.
Not a good visual
@blackndark There has been rumors of an event happening around August and funny enough we were supposed to hear something in the summer that Akira Yamaoka brought up...
Is anybody really surprised? Sony think they are above everyone else and it shows.
First of all they just had a small event and said more news for their first party games is coming soon. Some of you are such man children when it comes to gaming news and act like they haven't showed anything at all. We already know of a ton of games in development and plenty of stuff coming this year. Relax. Nintendo, Square, Capcom, and plenty of other big studios aren't at Gamescom this year either. Plus how many first party games have they released in the last 8 months? Like 5? You people act like they haven't released a game in years.
@Nepp67 rumors havent been too accurate lately.
@mucc and they've had at least three State of Plays this year so far - on top of releasing quality games throughout the year - it's not like they are being quiet
@Zombie9ers Exactly, I mean they just released a GOTY contender a month ago. But no, people want CGI trailers for games coming out 2+ years down the line. Just so they can complain about release dates later on when they inevitably get delayed.
Sony doesn't really need to join these events. Most people buy a console and spend significant time on third party games in addition to exclusives. The number of exclusives is more of a fanboy thingy truth be told. Sure, PS4 spoiled with exclusives and I'm sure PS5 will have more great games eventually. Just play the upcoming Far Cry 6,Judgement, Dying Light 2, etc while waiting. Most gamers also don't really follow these events. They look at the online store or their local retailers. Sony will be fine. As will the other console makers.
@Jarobusa True there
What most seem to miss is that in last State of play 90% of games shown are coming out in next 3 months.
That means they wont show all these games again.
All that whines and tell everyone they are joining xbox instead please do that.
But dont believe that the grass is greener there.
@DertieBertie @mucc
Sony is taking a bizarre approach of announcing and showing games only when they have actual gameplay to show, and only updating us about said games when there is something new to show or a release date to announce. Such arrogance!
They should follow the classic, tried-and-true formula of announcing a game 5 years before release, then show a logo, then show a CGI trailer, then have lots of buzz on social media that there is going to be another CGI teaser, then announce the release date, then have their E3 gameplay trailer leaked, then show the leaked trailer, then delay the game, then have another gameplay trailer with downgraded visuals, then delay the game again, then engage in crunch for 8 months, then release the game with a day 1 patch but the game is still buggy, then release a Road Map which explains how they'll fix and finish the game, then charge for a Season Pass which ultimately delivers the content that should have been in the game in the first place.
This "show a game when it's ready and deliver it in a finished state without crunch" nonsense just proves that Sony has let the success of the PS4 go to their heads!

EDIT: Wait, has discourse gotten so bad that people can't tell I'm being sarcastic?
@The_New_Butler Yeah, when you consider we know what most of their studios are working on, most of them have either just released and are years from another release, or are the games we know about with a pending release in the next year, with other studios being brought in largely to help with those games, the rumored mythical new studio from which everybody left, and the closure of Japan Studio, other than moneyhatted third party games, there's really nowhere else for new games to come from. There'll be surprises, or semi-surprises like ND's new IP and Spidey2 that's about as well kept a secret as the Series S. But generally I think they have little they can really promote for years. It's sort of PS4's fault. They revealed the last 3 years of the PS4 in year 2 & 3. So everything that's been coming out we knew was coming years ago, so it feels like old news, and it'll be years until those same teams can recharge and release something new. I've said before but this whole gen feels like a misfire. The gen won't really start for either company in earnest for another 2+ years. By the time it's in full swing with tons of games we'll be waiting for the next gen, and half of its content will probably be cross-gen to PS6/SeriesZ. Or worse, GaaS with new seasons!
Still, Sony has been removing themself from all gaming related news events for years....yet they pay for categories on Jeopardy. Their marketing is very clearly, intentionally, bypassing gamers and aiming for a mass market. The PS marketing feels more like they're chasing Wii's "blue ocean" than PS fans. Even with no big news, they could cater to fans if they wanted to with what they do have, tech demos, noncommittal VR hype, literally ANYTHING.
We hang out here enough, we know the Sony loyalists could be whipped into a blue flag waving frenzy if you told them RCMdaix games are Sony exclusive now....why doesn't Sony Corp know that?
Sony still taking that victory lap?
Meanwhile Microsoft realizes the next race has already begun...
The thing is, everyone who is showing up showed up at E3, so they will likely have nothing new to announce and if they do, it's not going to be much. Sony will do their own digital even when they have stuff to announce. It's rumored one is coming in August.
Also, Microsoft is showing up at every events, but I bet they don't have anything new to announce.
@ScottyG that's a really good point. Sony needs to get back in the driver's seat and continue to get people excited. As Microsoft continues to show up at more events that means more mindshare is slowly crawling away from Sony.
If Sony're going to be following the Apple playbook and only speaking on their terms, then they need to up the quality of the presentations.
State of Play just aren't cutting it for me, personally. I watch them and go "huh, that looks cool, but I'll probably have forgotten all about it in a week" (honestly, besides Deathloop, I can't remember the name of a single game from last week's SoP, and I watched that through... I think there was a side-scrolling one with a warrior of some description that looked cool...). Whereas when I watch an Apple Keynote, I am usually able to recall a number of new products or OS features for months afterwards.
Seems Sony is just gonna focus on its State of Play from the looks of it.
They will be waiting to be ready to show actual gameplay for what is coming.
People seem to forget how much they got slated for showing CGI trailers and nothing else for games announced way too early. Taking a different approach.
"Sony, presumably, is too busy washing its hair."
Wow, I didn't expect that the level of this site could go down more. Seriously this is written by a child that didn't get the toy he wanted for Christmas. Please go back to the site you were in the past. The articles that get published can't be taken serious anymore. They only excist to complain and start heated discussions.
On topic: Sony is doing this for years, I do hope they have a showing this or next month. But I don't mind what both Sony and Nintendo are doing. Only show games that are close to release or really show if you have something real to show.
Why show up if they don’t have anything to show? Just to remind everyone to be ready for Horizon 2 to not arrive this year?
@get2sammyb you really think we aren’t getting an event in August/September?
I think its a slam dunk tbh.
All we need now is for Horizon FW to be delayed until 2022 and that will be the cherry on my cake of big fat disappointment for the 2nd half of 2021 from Sony.
Came out the gates swinging with PS5 for the first 6 months and now the next 6 months look barren.
Sony will do an event early August, fact. They don't need Gamescom..
Although it is rather annoying that they have been silent for so long, I kinda feel that this tactic Sony is taking is a scare tactic for the competition.
If you think about it the competition have no idea what Sony is up to, it's the unknown that scares them the most because they don't know where they are gonna strike.
The downside of this is neither do their consumers
@Kidfried I think that’s maybe a little harsh. Have you ever been to gamescom? It’s enormous, and makes the likes of Tokyo Game Show look like a hobby fair at your local community centre. All of the big three have a huge presence there normally, but the thing is that it’s 99.99% an in person consumer show, the announcements aren’t really a big deal most of the time. So for that reason I totally get Sony skipping it, but when it’s physical I wouldn’t be too surprised to see them back again.
As for Sony being silent, again, not too surprised. They really seem to be taking from Nintendo’s playbook and want to focus on the games that make their platform unique, which means less is more. Reckon we’ll have something major between late summer and the 1 year anniversary, so Sept-Nov sometime.
@Kidfried ah fair enough, in terms of news then yes absolutely spot on, very rarely see anything big announced
I'm okay with this because if the games aren't ready then why show them two- three years away from their release. Only then to be delayed and the game not making out as well due to over-hyped ads. I can deal with one year of ads of the game and then its out. But we don't want another Cyberpunk 2077, APB reloaded, Drive Club ( Got better at the end), and not ready online features. So Sony doing it right .
They have skipped in favor of the paris games week for at least a couple of years now.
@Ralizah gamescom is the biggest games fair in the world in terms of visitors. Nice try, but it's no failing E3.
@Ralizah Bad take. This time 13 months ago Sony put on a next gen event where their own games Spiderman Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Demon's Souls Remake, Destruction All Stars and Returnal were revealed AND are all out right now.
And lets not forget that these games have Ray tracing and other bells and whistles.
Meanwhile Fable, State of Decay 3 and Perfect Dark still haven't a single ingame screenshot to their name with the 2 former revealed this time 12 months ago now.
And this is 3 years after daddy Phil said they won't ever announce a game too early ever again.
And the 2 major games Xbox has this year has pretty much no real ingame practical ray tracing, Halo and Forza. A year after the console comes out and they couldn't even get this stuff ready for the games' launches.
So let's be smart and actually look at what the competition is doing by comparison, which is practically nothing 8 months into the gen.
Sony could announce anything tomorrow that has a release date for this year going by what they did this time last year.
@Rob_230 Hmm, has Sony ever skipped Tokyo Game Show before?
@KidBoruto Just googled and it seems they skipped it in 2019. I hope they dont repeat that as it feels crucial to promoting themselves to the Japanese market. I bet Xbox will have a massive presence there this year too
@Rob_230 Sadly I could see them skipping TGS again...especially since they also skipped the TGS 2020 Online event.
Hopefully we are proven wrong though.
Source: https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2020/en/
That's expected...but risky. It's leaving the competitors in charge of the narrative.
We do have the rumoured PSX style event coming up in August and TGS at the end of September and Sony should have plenty to announce, from the PSVR2 to the activation of SSD slot to all the games coming out over the next year to Bluepoints acquisition (I don't think anyone believes their denials but they are as good as 1st party anyway) not to mention possible announcements on Metal Gear and Silent Hill so the material for a major showcase is there.
