The leak has certainly taken the sting out of this announcement, but Crusader Kings III: Console Edition has been confirmed for the PlayStation 5. The uber-hardcore strategy game first launched on PC in 2020, but is being carefully converted to Sony’s next-gen console, with “all-new gamepad support designed for console controllers from the ground up”. The press release reads: “PS5 users will experience the game’s stress mechanics themselves, as their DualSense controllers physically react to in-game events as they unfold.”
It sounds like this is the full game, and not a watered-down version, so you’ll be waging war on other kingdoms and expanding your royal influence through marriage and children. There’s a trailer embedded above which should give you a glimpse of what to expect, but sadly there’s no release date attached right now. Also, there’s no PS4 version of the game planned: this is a rare next-gen exclusive from a third-party publisher.

I've seen quite a bit of this online, and while it does look like the kind of game that'll take you several weeks to understand, the level of depth leads to some real hilarity. You can create some truly cursed campaigns.
It's always good to see strategy games on console, it's a super rare breed!
@AFCC We'll probably start to see a lot more come now that console don't have a terrible CPU anymore.
@Floki Yep, that’s the main barrier which will explain why this is PS5 only. PCs can chug more than Thomas the Tank Engine when you get into the late-game.
I already bought this on PC, not thinknig it would come to PS5. I might be tempted to double dip once the price gets low enough. then agian, we'll see how it controls on a dualsense.
Also, this takes a lot of power to even get to the main menu, if I don't shut everything else down on my PC, it won't finish loading, and it still takes a while. This was never coming to PS4. The SSD is perfect for it.
Still think it would be better to just plug a mouse and keyboard in. Or even a mouse and controller if possible (and if 6 buttons are enough).
@MidnightDragonDX What?! Civ 6 is excellent on playstation. I originally had it on Switch, which was fine but struggled in the late game. I've played nearly 300 hours on PS4 and PS5, both of which were huge steps up in performance to the point where I'm now struggling for time between my turns working out what to do next. If this plays as well as that then I'll be a happy camper!
I'm more of a total war fan so hopefully total war warhammer 3 comes to ps5 some day. Still, this is great news
@Welsh_Will I also thought Civ 6 ran fine on PS4. Loading times are (unsurprisingly) much better on PS5 too.
The controls are fine for the most part. Keyboard and mouse will always be better but I only game on my consoles so am happy with any good port!
@Welsh_Will CK3 is simulating hundreds, if not thousands, of individual actions in real time, keeping track of a million individual NPCs and their lives, and much more. CIV might be complex in its mechanics, but this chugs because of all the individual micro decisions behind the scenes. You can track a presents life across the world or change your player character at a moments notice from Irish King to African Chief.
This is fantastic news! I almost bought a new pc a few times mainly to play this game. I've watched many videos of people playing this and it looks amazing. I heard as long as you look at it like a d&d tabletop type game it helps with the getting a hang of it. Many many systems at play. I'm pre-ordering as soon as it's available.
Yes, very exciting news.
Love CK3.
