Another week, another Chinese RPG that’s sure to have jaws on the floor. This latest effort, Honor of Kings: World, is based on a smartphone game, and is being developed by TiMi Studio Group, a subsidiary of juggernaut Tencent. Judging from the trailer, it seems to be inspired by series like Monster Hunter, with the plot being penned by sci-fi writer Liu Cixin.
Exactly how much of the trailer is legitimate gameplay is up for debate – but if the developer can pull this off in playable form, then we’re looking at something very special indeed. There are a number of highly ambitious projects in production in China right now, with Black Myth: Wukong also catching the eye of gamers around the globe recently.
There’s no release date or platform attached to Honor of Kings: World just yet, but we’d expect this one on the PlayStation 5 given the scale of the production values on display. What are your thoughts on the trailer? Close your mouth in the comments section below.

This is truly gorgeous to behold! This is definitely one Chinese RPG I can get behind. Here’s hoping it plays as good as it looks and does end up coming to PS5.
lmao, this game looks like it would only run on 3 rtx 3090's. This and black myth look promising but I'm not going to believe any of this till I'm holding the controller in my hands playing it.
@GorosBat Yeah, kinda agree. The trailer reminded me a little bit of those early PS3 era Sony trailers, where they were basically showing CGI made to look like a "real game".
I'm not sure how much here is gameplay.
Stunning concept, though, either way. If they can deliver this then it'll be very impressive indeed.
So gorgeous, but that dragon looks like the deathwing model from wow
My bet is on PC first as consoles are still a minor thing in China. Not sure if the PS5 is officially released in China, yet. And even if so, the install base will be small compared to PC...
Filing this in the "this looks way too good to be true" part of my brain.
They always know how to make games that look good in screenshots or in trailers but when you actually play them they either run poorly or are super stiff. Best to wait and see.
It's about time we get ourselves a chinese monster hunting game. Combat still needs some weight but regardless, it looks promising.
I hope we get it on the PS5! Maybe the success of Genshin on the PS5 will get more developers from China on board with consoles (i'm still hooked on Genshin a year after release).
It looks really good. If Western studios aren't going to put out many big single-player RPGs, I'm happy to play Chinese games.
I was out at Chinese but definitely out when you mentioned Tencent. Push🟦 stop promoting the CCP. Readers don't give your money to Tencent.
Looked great but even in the trailer it seems like it's running at 10fps lol
Chinese game , made from a subsidiary of TENCENT???
Yeah, no thanks for this game. I will stick with Monster Hunter Rise instead
Looks good. Though I feel like fighting huge monsters with a sword/axe is getting tiring, I mean you're always going to end up chipping them from the side or hind legs, can't really fight them head-on. I mean Father Gascoigne was an average human size but more frightening than Cleric Beast and co.
More and more I weary of seeing the same type of game made better-looking over and over and over again ad nauseum. If you're a fan of this kind of game, I get it, and I don't mean to detract from your excitement. Personally, it'd be nice to get excited over amazing graphics AND gameplay innovation now and then. I guess when such unconscionable amounts of money go into making games, risk-averse design becomes the norm.
They are really looking for that FF killer.
Is it coming to consoles?
Trailer looks good, but it's being created in the land of smoke and mirrors so I don't expect much.
Yoo, this looks really good. I hope it's a real gameplay and not just CG.
Good to see the wind fish is doing alright
That looks ridiculously pretty, that's what I originally thought PS5 games would look like instead of the PS4 Pro+ we've gotten so far. Let's see if this turns out to be real and not just a cleaverly edited cgi trailer.
I shed a year whenever I hear Tencent, can't wait for microtransaction and gotcha mechanics because they're all about squeezing every penny
Its mind bottling.
I stopped reading after I saw Tencent...
Is this a full game though? Or another gacha like genshin impact.
When I first saw gameplay for genshin I was amazed and hyped, then I played it and found out I needed £hundreds to get anywhere far
@starbuck2212 have you seen my comment? I have already decided.
I see Chinese developed game. Then I see Tencent.
This equals to no buy at all. I refuse to sell my personal information, so facial recognition and sell it to the CCP.
This doesn’t only apply to Tencent. ANY CHINESE GAME DEVELOPER, I will boycott like Tencent, Mihoyo, and etc
@Link41x I see Tencent. I jumped straight to comments and typed my reply
@UltimateOtaku91 yet plenty of people who've played it said they didn't spend a dime and felt no need to to enjoy the game.
@naruball yeah if you want to spend a thousand hours grinding
@UltimateOtaku91 This is definitely what they do. Either that or hunt down the optimal builds...which sounds very unfun to me because experimentation and using who you like is part of the fun of gaming.
@starbuck2212 I understand being out when it said Tencent but why were you out for Chinese? So you don't play games made by a Chinese team that is stationed in China or they can be from anywhere?
Would you play a game if is being developed in the UK but all of the developers happen to be of Chinese descent? I'm genuinely curious 🙂
Yeah, China and Korea also are showing some impressive stuff. Playing Sword and Fairy 7, and enjoying it. Top it off, it was only $29.
Keeping an eye on this one.
It's definitely pretty looking but I'm not much of a monster hunter fan so I'll likely pass on it. Nice trailer though.
@starbuck2212 We all play games that were made in the US, so what is the difference? One makes the life of its people hard, the other makes the life of people from other countries hard. Also, both countries trade billions of dollars yearly so if you support one, you will support the other one anyway.
Really excited by all the gaming developments in China, Korea and other parts of the world. It’s lovely to see new blood and ideas.
While this does currently look far too good to be true (pre-rendered), so does DokeV from Korea and that looks much closer to release. I hope this, Black Myth Wukong and more achieve much of what they set out to do, and more importantly are fun to play.
Gaming's future is bright with an influx of so many new studios and worldly ideas.
@naruball @UltimateOtaku91 As someone who HAS spent over 1000 hours playing Genshin I feel qualified to answer.
First off It’s worth mentioning it’s a really ambitious AAA base game, with an addictive gameplay loop. It wouldn’t work without being really good at its core.
You absolutely DON’T have to spend a penny to get enjoyment out of it, but yes there is a lot of grind.
To be clear paying money doesn’t really reduce the grind. In fact getting more characters and weapons, through payment, in many ways only increases the amount of time you need to play to upgrade all those things. It’s the upgrades that take time. I'd posit that F2P players actually have less to do... though still a lot.
Ultimately it is similar to games like Destiny, CoD Warzone, FIFA etc. in the way it is 100% designed to take up time to keep you engaged for as long as possible and keep you playing, and paying. Genshin just does it in a slightly different way for the same result.
Dammit why did you have to say Liu Cixin?! Now I have to check this out.
@Ah-Void if you can't tell the difference between America and China then it's not worth conversing with you. And it more than hard living under the CCP.
20fps, Chinese developed, looks to good to be true. Hard pass.
The danger of Tencent is so massively under reported its crazy. You can tell 90% of games media have Chinese related funding
But you can only play it 1 hour per day lol. The graphics look ok but it's easy to make cell shaded stuff look like that in a trailer with tons of DOF and motion blur among other trickery.
Hopefully it's good, but I would give 5 to 1 that it turns out to get 70s in metacritic when all is said and done.
Damn. Chinese RPGs putting everyone to shame, visually, with these upcoming projects.
I'm kinda stuck on this. On one hand I'm finding it very hard to believe this is actual gameplay, but on the other hand we've gotten some great looking games on the dated consoles of last gen like FF7 remake, gow4, last of us 2, dmc5, etc. So with these new consoles and having a huge Corp backing it financially, maybe this can actual happen
I struggle to figure out how a Chinese company can make a game aimed it Chinese players, when playing a game in China takes your "social credit" score and labels you an undesirable pretty rapidly. If it's aimed at the West, I assume it's only used to help hook pseudo-"social credit" scoring into the global masses not already subject to it. Let me guess, account creation required?
@Salt_AU no huge loss. I don’t play Souls games to be honest
I don't believe what I'm seeing. This HAS to be a tech demo..
Game looks epic, hopefully the final product is of the same quality.
@starbuck2212 this better not be F2P. If it isn't free to play, maybe I might consider it but even then, this does have some bad frame issues anyway.
And I hope for no microtransaction or gacha mechanics in this (even though it probably will)
