Well, we didn't see this announcement coming. Star Ocean is making a return on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2022 with Star Ocean: The Divine Force. The action RPG was revealed during Sony's latest State of Play broadcast, and... well, there's some potential on display here, but it's looking very rough around the edges.
Developer tri-Ace says more information on The Divine Force is coming soon, but how do you think this one looks? Have a laugh at the main character's mullet in the comments section below.

I hope this is good but the trailer does not inspire early confidence.
Super excited for a new Star Ocean game.
Now only if they gave it the same budget as FF7
This was very unexpected
@ShogunRok Star Oceans have always looked Janky but somehow end up being pretty good. Main guys hair though....jesus
Was quite shocked by this announcement but as I disliked the last entry I failed to get excited.
Hopefully it's longer than star ocean 5
It looks as if it has a more open world approach, as long as there is interesting side quests like the early entries than it should be fine
this is a s-e franchise that has failed over and over again since star ocean 3, yet they keep making new ones... why? nobody seems to like them.
I used to love Star Ocean but this looks horrible. The main character looks like a WWE spare.
This needs another 3 years in the cooker
I mean. Gameplay looks fun. Art design looks great to me. Looks good in terms of fidelity. But... that framerate looks horrific. If they can balance that out, I'll be hyped, because it looks like a Xenoblade like. And that's a good reason to play your first Star Ocean game.
This looks awful, sadly. Have such fond memories of Star Ocean on PS1 but nothing has topped it. Dunno what was going on with some of the character design and animations in this.
Doll faces are back, meh.
Ah it's not FFXVI but it's something. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It's rough on the edges but the gameplay looks fun. I mean FF Origins was also rough on it's first reveal but looked better on the recent trailer so I'm sure this will be polished as well. It's been a while since I've played a Star Ocean game anyways and that was the one from PS2
It definitely looked rough. Hopefully they can get it sorted out for launch but a nice little surprise nonetheless.
Looks rough but the best games tend to look that way these days I find.
The cutscenes looked alright, but the gameplay was rough. I'll rather wait for a new xenoblades.
@Xaessya Never gonna happen sadly, I've learned to keep my expectations low with the franchise.
Which is why I'm still excited we're getting another game...I will happily play this eventually, when it's $20 New.
@ShogunRok Trailer looked great compared to Little Devil Inside following it in the SoP w/ that abrupt ending. My entire family was excited by SO then watched LDI saying "there's no way they can end on this, maybe FF16 is next?"
Was shocked to see it was a new game announcement for a big game in that Indie SoP, I half assumed it had already been announced but I missed it. Looking forward to this one, skipped the last one, reviews were just too bad. Take this out of the SoP, there was no SoP. Though I was happy for Quimby when they showed the Bugsnax DLC, but I still haven't played it.
Nice!.
Crazy is that when I finished Tales of Arise I wish I had a new Star Ocean, and even google to see if there was any news about the game out there,.
Now it is real... on the list.
This is the best thing from the state of play. But i haven't like a Star Ocean since 3, so don't have high hopes for it.
@SuperSilverback Bro, the 80s are back for good.
Am I the only one who laughed when it said "At the end of infinite space..."? Surely they should have thought about that one a bit harder.
The animations for flying sure look horrifically stiff. Why lead with that bit? The environments looked nice as it went along, though. If there's a decent population in towns/cities and a lot of life in the environments such as a good number of enemies or animals then the slightly early ps4 game graphics don't matter much to me. I actually have the Star Ocean series but haven't played them yet. Will see if that changes by the time this releases lol
This is so disappointing. I've never even been a fan of this series, never got to try them, but this just makes me feel really bad for its fans. We're in the middle of this JRPG renaissance with stellar titles coming left and right, and this series is still lagging behind. It doesn't look awful, just aggressively 6/10 material. Hope it's okay for fans at least.
If only they could go back to the more daring and unusual structure of the first two games. You couldn't get all party members in a single playthrough, you'd need some characters to get other characters, or someone wouldn't join because they hated a guy you already had, etc. And who you had could completely change how certain sections play out. It was still overall mostly linear but what happened in each bit could change a lot (the opposite to most non-linear games where you can do things in any order but regardless each bit is still the same whatever order you do it in).
It's already better than the last game since that seemed to have nothing t o do with the Star Ocean theme of being set in space. Saying that based on each entry gradually getting worse I don't have much hope.
I'm down for more JRPGs...but man, Star Ocean needs an aesthetic overhaul (similar to what Tales of Arise did).
This and KOF were highlights for me during the State of Play.
@Porco That's not true. It failing to resonate with masses doesn't mean it doesn't have a fandom.
I for one am glad to see the series return. I think criticisms of SO4 and 5 were overly harsh.
Looking forward to this one possibly bringing it to a higher level.
Just... something seems off with the voice acting.
Edit: just found out it will have dual protagonists, something we hadn't seen since SO2! It's sounding awesome!
Looks great for a lower budget JRPG. Really looking forward to playing it.
Every time tri-Ace makes a new Star Ocean and not a Radiata Stories remaster, a piece of my soul dies.
Looks ok but budget, probably be a 7/10. The combat seems ok at least. I'll buy it anyway lol just cause the are hardly any good new jrpgs
I like Star Ocean usually...but after the awful Integrity and Faithlessness, I really don't have a lot of confidence for this.
In the words of one of my favourite YouTubers. 'It looks like it's been Xenoshitted on' haha
i dont like their porcelain doll faces. they need a makeover.
