Want a loopy rumour to kick your week off in the right way? Warner Bros is allegedly developing a Super Smash Bros-style mascot mash-up featuring characters like Fred Flinstone, Johnny Bravo, Gandalf, and Shaggy. The game – apparently named Multiversus – was initially tagged as NetherRealm Studios’ next project, although gobby insider Jeff Grubb has since hit up social media to clarify that, while the title is apparently real, it’s being developed elsewhere.
He said: “This Warner Bros platform fighter is real, but it is not a NetherRealm game. Come on.” Obviously the VentureBeat scribe has a solid track record, so you can probably bank on the information being provided here.
This story started life on Reddit, where it’s claimed that the current roster includes the following characters:
- Shaggy
- Gandalf
- Tom & Jerry
- Batman
- Fred Flintstone
- Mad Max
- Johnny Bravo
According to the leak, this project started life with the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme, which saw fans reimagine the Scooby Doo star as a Dragon Ball Z character. He was later incorporated into the opening credits of animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, and Warner Bros liked the idea so much they decided to greenlight a mash-up brawler in the same style as Super Smash Bros.
Obviously, there have been a number of plays at the Nintendo fighter’s formula, including Sony’s own PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and the recent Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. None have ever really captured the magic of Sora Ltd’s series, though, and we’re sceptical of how well this rumoured cast of characters will ultimately come together.

Doubt it, Netherealm has a very distinct style of fighting games and I'd be surprised if they weren't making another one of those.
Grubb might be right about this one.
Since when does Jeff Grubb have a solid track record?
Y'know I'm surprised we didn't get more Smash-like games years ago.
I legit hope this is true, it sounds amazing and the potential of the roster is immeasurable. Also there's no chance they would be cheap enough to not put voice acting... Is day one for me without needing to see any footage or screenshots 😋
YABBA DABBA DOn't make this game, WB, please
@Royalblues some of them I will agree are pretty reliable. HOWEVER Jeff Grubb is not one of them. I don't think I have seen a single thing he has claimed end up being true this year.
It's a lovely idea until you remember that Nintendo will spend years developing Smash Bros and then obsessively tweaking and balancing it for years afterwards while this will be banged together in the basement in six months and get two patches made by the work experience kid whose desk is in an actual cupboard. Then they'll be confused why it didn't earn them millions
@Royalblues don't underestimate insiders they are right unless there wrong.but in that case it's the sources fault not there's.
This is satire in case you can't tell
@YorkshireNed As long as Nintendo keeps screwing over the competitive scene of Meele, there will be a vacuum ready to be filled.
@Cadeni I'm sure you're right but I'm also sure this ain't going to fill it. Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong...
Ahaha yes! Finally, Shaggy in a fighting game. It's not quite the brutal, realistic MKXI but it will have to do. Gandalf vs. Tom and Jerry would be fantastic, though I need him to have a move with a wizard broom so it can be like Tom's owner doing some good old animal abuse.
Surprised they didn’t pump out something like this sooner as a Space Jam tie-in. Wonder if that franchise will have anything to do with the overall theming to kind of make it more cohesive?
This actually sounds really cool. Finally a different style fighting game than the worn out bland MK games.
@Ken_Kaniff I wouldn't call MK bland but they do need a break from MK and Injustice which is MK minus the fatalities so hopefully this rumor is true.
Sounds interesting if true. I hear some pretty good things about the Nick Toon game so maybe this can turn out well.
You had me at Shaggy and Batman, day one buy if true.
@Juanalf It definitely needs a break.
I would LOVE a game like this, sign me up! Grew up with all the classic 90's and 2000's WB cartoons.
Heck yeah sounds awesome! Shaggy vs Batman vs Fred Flintstone vs Tom and Jerry would be the fight of a lifetime! Nickelodeon All-Stars is quite good even though its low budget so hopefully whoever is working on it gets a proper budget from WB to get voice-over work done.
So now that Smash is "ending" all these other companies are cashing in on its success? I'm down for more games like Smash but usually they end up not being supported post launch and are just soulless copies of an arguably better game.
I mean there are some crossovers that we don't really need do we? The thought of Batman and Gandalf meeting IS pretty cool though I'll admit ha ha.
So they wouldn't green light the second part of Dune unless sales were good enough, but they'll make an entire game based off a stupid meme from 5 years ago? And someone gets paid money to make these decisions? How do I get that job?
