Forget those clickbait YouTube thumbnails that appeared to imply the contrary: Tommy Vercetti still can’t swim in GTA Vice City in the GTA Trilogy. Footage of Rockstar’s remaster is beginning to be shared online, and naturally one of the first things fans have been trying is jumping in the ocean. As you can see from the timestamp embedded above, however, it doesn’t end well.
Wasted!
Vercetti’s inability to swim has been a sore point for well over a decade now. Vice City is, of course, inspired by Miami, and its rich blue waters seem ripe for paddling. The truth is that the Scottish developer didn’t have time to add the system into the original, and text in its PS2 manual encourages you to stay out of the water due to the presence of sharks.
Some mods added to the game in the years since its 2002 debut have incorporated swimming systems, and there was some hope that Rockstar would retroactively integrate something similar in the remaster. However, leaked footage confirms that the open world classic plays identically to the original, which means you’ll drown should you fall into Vice City’s crisp oceans.

don't know how to feel about this.
sure rockstar could always say it's to keep the charm of the original but when that specific piece of charm was due to time limit and not intentional then maybe it should be in the remastered version decades later. especially since they don't need to make an all new game compared to when it first came out and they have the know how from san andreas swimming.
@jdv95 I guess it could break the balance of the game and some mission designs if they added it in now. The ship on this probably sailed in 2002, sadly.
Would have been a nice added feature to this but I do like that it sticks to its original roots. Bittersweet. I’m okay with it.
Not a problem for me. Adding swimming would greatly change the game.
This is 2002 game being remastered. Not remade like Mafia 1 was.
@get2sammyb forgive me if I missed it, but will there be any ps5 physical copies of this? I haven’t followed much of this trilogy news
No shock here as it could break the game if it did plus it would add nothing anyway to the game.
Just another reason why Vice City Stories was the superior game. Too bad it's STILL stuck on PSP/PS2/Vita (PSP version). Dammit.
Tommy Vercetti wasn't taught as a child because his parents never thought he'd have any maritime adventures, but that he would take over the exotic clothes peddling business they had scraped tooth and nail to set up. As a child Tommy was sometimes the subject of ridicule to the other children for his inability to do something that the other children considered basic and once found himself falling into the waterways of Liberty City after the school bullies knocked him down and threw him in... Such a traumatising experience lead Tommy to a fear of bodies of water bigger than himself, but he recalled the words of mama "If you let the fear control you, you will never experience the life to the fullest." along with his father's proverb "Who is in fear of every leaf must avoid the woods" whenever he was near water. He would never try to swim but he would walk alongside the ocean as if walking through a building that's walls were ablaze. Don't throw Tommy into the water guys, you're no better than the bullies if you do.
They should add a mission where Lance has to find a floating raft TLOU style since Tommy can't swim.
@Jayslow add a mission? Rockstar only regurgitate
@kingbreww oh I'm sure it will cost at least 500 shark cards!
@PowderToastMan Nothing has been announced.
There’s a reason why you couldn’t swim in any of the games in the trilogy, it’s the way the games were designed by making you progress the story to unlock the different islands. Allowing to hop between the islands from the beginning would defeat the purpose of that design.
@get2sammyb Exactly, some missions require you to be water-locked in so you can only escape a certain way, there's no chance they'd put that feature in as it would break those missions.
@MaccaMUFC I mean they probably could have added something like the Ghost Leviathans in Subnautica, where something comes and kills you if you swim too far from shore. Could be sharks in a nod to the manual.
@Jayofmaya GG
seeing gameplay of these has put me off a little bit, the trailer looked great but I'm not so sure I'll give GTA3 a shot on Now but I'll happily wait until this is cheap for VC & SA
@MaccaMUFC Fairly sure you could swim in San Andreas but its been a long time since I gave that a shot
It would make no sense for him to be able to swim. It's a remaster, not a remake!!! Swimming would bring many problems I'm sure of it...
Maybe one day they will actually fully rebuild the games or, the better choice, let Bluepoint do it
So how was it supposed to be more like "GTAV" but he cant swim and dont say its because the water has "toxins" in it anymore because the water is clear we need improvements!
Bah rubbish! How can this be a definite remake if he can't swim still? 🙄🙄
@Jayslow just to enter the water will cost 1000 shark cards 😂😂😂
@lolwhatno Fair, but also the dead river leviathan can be stunned and outrun. The ones that get you from out of bounds? You dead.
@huyi Because it's not a remake. They've never said it was a remake. It's a remaster.
@theheadofabroom graphics are beefed up but i can see your point
@Golem25 very underrated game. The soundtrack rivaled vice citys.
Tommy not swimming is the least of the problems presented in that video.
Whelp, time for the good ol' Right, R2, Circle, R1, L2, Square, R1, R2 then.
So an accidental slip and Tommy and Claude will still drown. That's annoying.
It seems a bit silly now about how awesome i thought it was when back in 2004 i found that CJ in SA could not only swim but also swim underwater.
I don't understand the headline. Is it only the PS5, PS4 version affected by this?
@get2sammyb......... Sammy if i didn't know that you worked for PS I would mistake you for a Rockstar PR person or Rockstar spin doctor.
Unless you've been living under a video gaming rockstar for the past 15 years, then you do know that modders have modded various GTA games to perfection.
Tom Vercetti swimming ability was modded perfectly ages ago WITHOUY AFFECT ANY STUPID MISSION BALANCE.
The is no excuse you can make for Rockstar when GTA5's horrendous loading was fixed again by a modder when oh so poor rockstar wete busy milking GTA online to care
So please stop insulting our intelligence and call it like it is, this nothing but a piss poor cash grap HD port that is not even been handeld by Rockstar themselves, this is done by the same developer that made their mobile ports.
So what we are getting is mobile ports with resoltion upped to HD graphic level and not even 1440p or 4k.
So essentially what is happening is rockstar removed the previously not selling games on store fronts and re-releases them with big marketing and hype campaigns and doesn't release any info about these remasters until a day before launch and you still wanna make excuses for them, come on Sammy, you guys as gaming media should be doing better than this.
Just because its Rockstar should it give them pass to not be called out on their BS.
@lolwhatno so, yes, they all stun, but for every 30 seconds you're out of bounds a new ghost leviathan spawns.
On top of that the ghost Leviathans under the surface are only juveniles. They're smaller, slower, and do less damage. I still hate them.
@lolwhatno So I'm not sure, seems legitimate although there might be a cap they respawn up to. They retreat and presumably despawn if you escape back into bounds. I think it's safe to say though that unless you're using a godmode cheat, you're not going to survive fending off more than a couple of them, making the question somewhat academic.
