The SteamWorld games have always taken place on a 2D plane, but for the next entry in the series, the developer is literally adding a new dimension. SteamWorld Headhunter has just been announced by publisher Thunderful, and you can watch the teaser trailer above.
There's very little information about the game so far, but we do know a couple of things. Firstly, this will be the series' first three-dimensional title after a handful of side-scrolling escapades. We also know this game will be a co-op action adventure "with a head-popping twist", whatever that might mean. Finally, this game follows on from the events of SteamWorld Dig 2.
It certainly looks and sounds interesting from what we know, but obviously we'll need a little more to go on before we can get a real feel for what this game is. We're certainly intrigued, though, and the SteamWorld games are always a delight, so we're down for another. No platforms have been confirmed either, but with the majority of the series' games appearing on PlayStation, it seems likely this will land on PS5 eventually, but we'll have to wait and see.

Only hope is that it's completely playable Single player. Loved steamworld Dig 2 and Heist.
I read they were making a follow on from Dig 2 a few weeks back after buying Dig on the 3rd platform when it was on sale on ps store. Sounds interesting, but I didn't like Gilgamesh enough to purchase it and never saw Heist through to the end, but bought it again on sale so will try again at some point. Hopefully it will be good and not have some non-real time strategy mechanic...
I'm looking forward to this. I'm currently playing SteamWorld Heist on the Vita, and I'm really enjoying it.
I'm also waiting to clear my some space in my gaming library so that I can add SteamWorld Dig 2 to the collection.
Slightly disappointed we're not getting something more in the style of Heist, that was a gem of a game.
Steamworld going 3D reminds me of oddworld. Almost all entries being stand alone within the franchise probably doesn’t help either.
Wait. You don't understand the "head-popping twist" yet? It's in the logo. And the video linked in the article. Clearly, the character's head comes off and will be a gameplay element. SMH
Had no idea they did an rpg called SteamQuest. Now I am annoyed it has never appeared on PlayStation.
