Since the arrival of the PlayStation 4, access to online multiplayer has been part of a PS Plus subscription, and that's very unlikely to change. Still, every now and again, Sony throws us all a bone, lifting the requirement for a brief period to let all users enjoy some online gaming. This coming weekend is one of those times:
Yes, from 18th to 19th December, you'll be able to take your games online without the need to subscribe to PS Plus. The 48-hour window allows you to play whatever online title takes your fancy — not just the ones pictured in the above tweet. It's worth mentioning that free-to-play games such as Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone never need a PS Plus subscription; this free weekend just opens things up to premium games as well.
On a related note, a 12-month PS Plus subscription is currently half-price on PS Store, with the deal ending on the 19th too.
Will you be jumping into some online games thanks to this free weekend? What will you be playing? Tell us in the comments section below.

Thats it i've had enough of sony treating its premium paid up members like crap..i mean come on giving away the part that most of us only actually subscribe for for free! FOR FREE! its not right and i've a good mind to cancel my sub..next they will give away godfall (well part of it anyway)..
Don't suppose online can be free all the time now can it?
Yeah, I didn't think so. I don't know, you always supposed to be grateful for the free weekends, but realistically, because of how last minute they are announced, it is a pain to take advantage off as you somehow have to make room not only in your schedule, but in your friends as well for the limited time so you can actually play online together. Sure you can play with randoms, but where is the fun in that?
Disgusting. They had better refund the 20p back to us Plus users. Typical Sony as of late.
Scam the Players.
/sarcasm
Are people being sarcastic when they state their anger about this? I can never tell anymore.
Not my intention to be dismissive. I just don't understand the anger, if it's real.
@Shepherd_Tallon haha. I certainly am. I wasn’t sure if I should mention I’m being sarcastic, as I know how these comment sections get. Hahah
@SoulChimera 😂😂 Okay okay, that earned you a chuckle.
Who cares about online gaming for free? What about PS+ discount for free 😜
So online can be free like steam, yet they choose not to, damn.
@Shepherd_Tallon i was being really sarcastic..just thought i'd see what its like to be one of "those"...
For the payers!!!!
Oh wait...hang on...d'oh!
Kind of curious who this freebie is for exactly. Anyone so committed to single player gaming that they're not even subscribed to PS Plus (after all, there are plenty of PS Plus subscribers who are in it for the games, not the ability to use multiplayer features) are probably not going be swayed by a weekend of free access to the thing they're not bothered about anyway.
At best, I can see this appealing to a few Dark Souls players who like to co-op but aren't actively subscribed to PS Plus at the moment
@rachetmarvel well of course it can. Were you under the impression that Sony needed our money so that could keep putting coins in their internet meter, otherwise multiplayer would die and there'd be nothing they could do about it?
@Northern_munkey I should have known better 😂😂
These days you can never be sure.
@Shepherd_Tallon 🤣
I got really happy for a second there reading the title, I thought finally them making online free will make Microsoft look ridiculous and we will join Steam! but nah they both still look silly 🥲
Without a shadow of doubt the worst aspect of modern console gaming is the PS+/gold multiplayer tax. Rumour has it xbox may make all online play free soon, lets hope it happens and Sony is forced to follow suit
@danlk1ng you're gonna need a wet floor sign for your comment because I fell squarely into it lol All of my PS4 games are single player focused as I out right refuse to pay for multi-player access and I don't care for the game rentals. This would be a good time to experience Bloodborne online but it's not worth planning my weekend around it, so chances are high I'll miss out and I'll be fine with that
@Northern_munkey why would you pay in the first place? I never ever even for a second thought of paying for a multiplayer experience. It's a robbery that's acceptable in this day and age. In my book PlayStation and all consoles are for singleplayer/couch co-op games. PC for multiplayer,period.
@Netbean preach! Sony would charge you for a save slot if they could!
@GeneralFlamer i pay to support the service because i'm a playstation player not a pc gamer..not a fan of nintendo..its not just the multiplayer i sign up for but for the bonus games each month..you dont like it thats fine (each to their own) so have a bit more respect please..
Happy for those that will take advantage of this promo!
@Northern_munkey that easily triggered, even though I said nothing to aggravate or insult you?
Bright future in front of you! Sheesh...
@GeneralFlamer it takes a bit more than that..your comment was a bit off and almost a bit judgemental in tone whereas mine was blatantly sarcastic so maybe you could understand why my feathers were a bit ruffled...i just asked you to be a bit more respectful but obviously that was enough to rattle your cage..have a good weekend 🤣
