Fortnite is more than just a game: it’s a cultural phenomenon. That’s why we barely bat an eyelid these days when Epic Games cooks up something impressively cool, like its Soundwave Series, which is designed to promote (or, for the cynics among you, advertise) new musical talent. And following a successful run last year, it’ll return on 21st January with Australian artist Tones and I.
For those not familiar, the singer had a pretty big hit with Dance Monkey a couple of years back, which you’ve almost certainly heard at some point. With her debut album Welcome to the Madhouse out now, she’ll be showcasing songs within the Battle Royale from 11PM UK time. You’ll have 72-hours to join the event from a tab on the main menu, and will even receive a Spray for participating.
We’ve included the start of the event for a number of time zones below:
Fortnite Soundwave Series Tones and I Times
- North America: 3pm PST / 4pm MST / 5pm CST / 6pm EST
- UK/Ire: 11pm GMT
- Europe: 12am (Sat) CET / 1am (Sat) EET
- Asia/Oceania: 8am (Sat) JST / 7am (Sat) AWST / 10am (Sat) AEDT
Epic Games says more artist showcases will be added to the game in the near-future, too: “Over the coming months, Fortnite will showcase other artists from around the globe, and you can find more information on the lineup and in-game features here.” Will you be checking this out at all, or is it not really your thing? Possibly the worst singer of all time. I don’t get it. She makes Johnny Rotten sound like Pavarotti.
@nessisonett If you’ve only heard Dance Monkey than I can see why you’d say that. I’ve listened to her debut, she’s a pretty decent singer. Her music’s boring as s@%t but she herself isn’t bad.
Fortnite is as much of a cultural phenomenon as fidget spinners, it's just lasted longer because most of its audience is still 12 years old, reminds me of those years everyone's aunt and uncle were playing Wii sports, same thing here but its being driven by squeakers
@Victor_Meldrew I think if you played it and gave it a chance, you’d feel differently. Or maybe not. It’s not going to be for everyone but it isn’t nearly as bad as some people make it out to be either. I know loads of dads who got into it through their kids and now play because they enjoy it. It’s actually good fun.
Never heard of this girl but these concerts are usually alright. They need to get some good acts on, like Britney 😆
@Enuo Nah, I listened to that album from last year because I heard the truly dire things being said about it. And it’s really that bad. Annoying instrumentals with the worst singing I’ve ever heard in my life. I’d rather listen to Fergie singing The Star-Spangled Banner for 45 minutes.
@nessisonett popular culture is shjte now anyway; who cares. When you read of consumerist driven mumble rappers referred to as the new punks you realise things ain’t what they were ..
@SystemAddict The problem is that people who say they hate mumble rap are just as annoying as people who listen to mumble rap. Popular culture has always been less interesting than the alternative, it’s downright garbage for anyone to say otherwise. Unless you’re a diehard Stock Aitken Waterman nut, the 80s were just as full of very similar bargain-bin ‘pop stars’ as modern stuff. Try watching some of the old Top of the Pops episodes and you realise that people only really remember the good stuff. I can guarantee the same will prove true for this decade. If anything, there’s more good music out there with less of a reliance on getting a record deal.
@nessisonett you gave this chick eartime don’t lecture me on pop stars 😂 I haven’t been made aware of any innovation in music(ianship) since the late ‘90s where a culmination of what came before seemed to exhaust the last of the trailblazers. Don’t care for mouthpieces; they’re ten a penny now but eh let’s just give every bedroom diva a record contract and replace her hairbrush with a - er; microphone…
@SystemAddict There are countless new musical styles which have come about since the 90s. The 2000s indie scene was basically dominated by indietronica like LCD Soundsystem which doesn’t really sound like anything that came before. It’s just old man shouting at cloud to pretend that music was only good in the past. I bet your parents listened to the stuff back then and wished Cliff Richard and Engelbert Humperdinck were still mega stars. There might be rubbish these days but there’s rubbish in every decade.
@nessisonett indietronica is just a term the original indie cindy kids that incorporated electronica had the good sense to lay off of. With honest musicianship gone the way of mostly the collegiate types with a degree in , loike, Talking Heads and stuff I don’t forsee anything interesting coming to bear? Just looking for a proper sonic boom to catch a rubbernecker’s attention. You mentioned punk; bend my ear…
@SystemAddict In terms of punk, there’s an entire wave of post punk at the moment like Black Country, New Road, Black MIDI, Squid, Tropical F**k Storm and the like. Then there’s the punk crossovers with other genres like Lingua Ignota with folk and industrial metal, Black Dresses with electro pop and screamo and Clipping with hip hop crossed with punk and black metal stylings. There’s millions upon millions of bands out there, free to listen on YouTube. It just takes a bit of effort to sift through the rubbish.
@nessisonett is that clipping with or with clipping?! ..okay that’s some noise; thank you now sure how hip hop enters the fray but then meeting black metal may be a logical conclusion. Thanks Ness
@nessisonett I LOVE Squid; phenomenal set of EPs and a cracking debut LP.
Also, Tones and I is absolute drivel.
A bad singer for a bad game, makes sense.
