Horizon Forbidden West will take a Tremortusk-sized bite out of your PlayStation 5’s SSD, with the anticipated sequel weighing in at almost 86GB, according to data scraped from Sony’s servers. PlayStation Game Size reports that the release may be even larger in Europe, with file sizes of over 96GB touted – and this is all prior to any potential launch day title updates.
There’s no word on the PS4 size as of yet, and it’s possible these numbers may shrink nearer to launch with additional compression. Nevertheless, you’re looking at a bit of beast here, so if you’re yet to install an additional SSD into your system, then you might want to start thinking about that now. What will you have to delete to make way for Aloy?

I'm sure it'll be worth every gigabyte!
Odd that the EU version is 10GB bigger. Is that because we include all the relevant letters in English to spell words properly? 🤭😉
@Integrity Haha, all those extra 'U's take their toll!
I'm starting to get hyped!
If we want amazing large detailed environments and top end AAA graphics etc then files sizes will be big.
I’m happy with the file size as it looks so worth it.
And every GB worth if it.
My WD 850 1TB is ready and hungry for the game
I have a feeling this is space needed to install it. Kinda like ps3 days where you needed double the amount of space free of the actual game size. Or its just wishful thinking on my part
@get2sammyb the eu version is FOCUSsED on adding TONnes of extra 'U's 😁
I'm preordering this in the Turkish store for around £38, though the PS4 physical version with free PS5 upgrade is currently available for £51 from Currys. I only preorder games from publishers with an excellent track record of games being ready to play at launch and bar a couple of exceptions Sony is definelty one of those.
Eh, honestly I easily have space for this and Elden ring without deleting anything and I have a bunch of extra games installed right now. The base SSD has proved plenty big enough
A result of being cross gen unfortunately. Once older systems are finally jettisoned these sizes will come down.
All good with me. I have plenty of space on my internal storage.
I'm still using a 4TB external drive for PS4 storage and PS5 games I'm not playing. It only take a few minutes to transfer the PS5 games over.
I'll probably get an 8TB external before I go for the SSD option. They're still ridiculously expense.
Sounds about what you'd expect, no?
Last of Us 2 and Red Dead 2 were over 100GB. I know PS5 games are meant to be a bit smaller, so presumably it'll been even bigger on PS4.
I'm fine with it, especially since the disc version of a lot of PS5 games have the majority of the game on them, if not all of it minus a day 1 patch. Otherwise it would be several days before I could play it given my mediocre at best internet.
Well, her cheeks did get bigger /sarc
The price to pay for greatness
Bring it on, Aloy!!!
It’s the new norm for next gen games. I’m expecting most if not all future PS5 games to be at least 100GB from now. And hopefully it’ll be worthy every GB. And from the trailer I saw yesterday I’m also expecting 10’s across the board in the reviews.
Welp my bones shiver as to how big the ps4 file size will be then.
@DrJames they biggified the wrong cheeks my guy 🥲
This game is going to be one of the best ever isn’t it? That size with PS5 compression and without a Day One update. The assets on that game, damnnnn
Looking long-term, storage capacity was the one thing both the PS5 and the XBox Series X/S sacrificed in order to keep their hardware costs down to a certain price point. And it will prove to be a serious problem before too long for a lot of consumers, especially with the PS5 since A) these SSDs are so ridiculously expensive on their own and B) you must install them by opening the console and messing with its internal components (and in doing so both voiding your warranty and playing roulette with a $500 console). Just bad, shortsighted design in a crucial area where the real cost is going to inevitably be borne by the consumers.
Just shows that the EU version will have more Language support which is understandable. NA speaks mostly 'English' (of sorts ) with some Spanish speakers and of course French Canadians but in Europe, there is also German, Italian, Portuguese, Belgian, Swiss, Dutch, Polish etc etc.
It would be 'cool' if Sony had something like Direct Storage so you can just install the Language pack you want to save space.
This is one of my most anticipated releases this year. Not long to wait until my pre-ordered copy arrives...
@AtlanteanMan not really. I've bought every major PS5 game so far and have no problem with storage space. The ones on my SSD are the ones I'll be playing. I can only play 3 or 4 games at a time so once I'm done they get deleted. Right now Demon's Souls and Spider-Man are off the SSD, amongst others but I have Returnal, R&C, GotG, Death Door, Nioh 2, CoD and others downloaded. I don't need every game I own on my SSD. The space I have on the base PS5 is enough for my needs and I'm a heavy user so I don't see why it's a largescale problem. There may be a few people it could affect but the vast majority will be fine I'd say.
When you figure dying light 2 is like have that...this world must be massive and full of life.
@itsfoz Who knows if they compressed the game at all. Maybe it's similar to the PS4 version. Maybe there's a bunch of unused data in the files they didn't bother to clean up.
Generally, file size doesn't tell you anything. Sekiro was only 12GB. Most devs aim for sub-50, so it fits on a disc, if that doesn't work they'll keep it below 100GB. It probably could've been smaller if they wanted.
@AtlanteanMan you do not Void ANY warranty by opening up and installing an SSD expansion on the PS5. The side is designed to clip off and be interchangeable with other colours. The SSD port is also simple to access with a screwdriver - NO stickers with 'Void if Removed'. If you don't follow their advice and use an SSD without heatsink (not recommended but still possible), Sony won't cover you for any 'damage' an overheating SSD may cause. They won't cover any 3rd party part and/or resulting problems that occur because of it.
Both systems have Pro's and Con's. With more 'choice' you have more competition and better 'prices' per TB extra. But that can lead to people buying the 'cheapest' option without Heatsinks, some cheap no name option that 'screws' up the hardware etc. Also with 'internal' bays, a bit more 'effort' to swap them. With the MS method, you have less choice but at least you can easily swap them like those old memory packs that you had to have to keep your game saves on. They almost become 'Game Cartridges' except you can change the games on it...
@True_Jehuty
That could meen 200Gb free space required for install ...
@Integrity "I'm pre-ordering this in the Turkish store for around £38" - Ironic username
@AtlanteanMan You don't void the warranty adding a new SSD. If you know what you are doing it takes 5 minutes if you don't it takes 10. It's not hard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1vF42QfmTk
Re: Price would you prefer Sony and Microsoft had added another 1TB of storage and sold the PS5 and XSX for £599 instead of £449? Terrible idea.
Many casual players won't ever even fill their storage.
Expansion makes a lot more sense, especially as we've already seen prices of Gen4 nvme SSD's come down by about a third since launch. By Christmas 2022 it will be over a half.
@themightyant why's that Mr Ant? They're still getting my money 😁 instead of me borrowing it, waiting for a sale or buying second hand. If anything I've spent far more in gaming than I normally would. I can't afford all the games this February and March but thanks to a combination of the Turkish Store and UK physical sales I can 😁
@themightyant Thanks to you and BAMozzy for clarifying the warranty situation; I had a bad experience with the PS4 Pro when I cleaned it after it started sounding like a lawnmower and ended up bricking for no apparent reason when reassembled (though will say that thing made it an absolute PAIN to get to the parts that actually needed cleaning). Glad to know the PS5 is a simpler matter, though I still think many of us could've lived with a higher MSRP if it had included a more substantial storage capacity to begin with.
This isn’t that bad. Black Ops Cold War was way worse.
I’ve got the Steelbook version preordered physically. From my personal experience, Sony’s disc games are actually on the disc. I suspect that the entire game will be on the disc, with only a day one patch needing to be downloaded.
I’m so excited to play this. This is the first time I’ve preordered a Steelbook game in… Since Halo Reach. That’s how long it’s been.
Horizon was my favorite PS4 game. So I’m so massively hyped for the sequel that it’s not even funny.
@AtlanteanMan You do not void your warranty on your ps5 by opening it up. Otherwise, why would sony sell different plate covers? Have you got a ps5? You need to stop the FUD for the ps5.
I like it. Red Dead levels
@ColdHandGee I have a brand new PS5, yes. Not in any hurry to open it up, though (see my reply above).
@AtlanteanMan
Uh dude. Where did you get that information.
Adding a secondary SSD to the PS5 does not void your warranty. You’re taking off the face plates, unscrewing a cover that protects the M2 port, and then installing it. That’s as far as you go for installing an M2 drive.
M
It’s actually less steps than putting a HDD in a PS4 or a PS3. And neither one of those actions voided those older consoles warranties.
@AtlanteanMan
Dude, it’ll be fine.
I’ve taken my plates off a few times for vacuuming. Sony actually included a dust port. There’s a little cut out in the plastic so you can vacuum off the motherboard. The fan is also open from the rear so you can vacuum dust out of the fan.
It’s a very intelligent design. It’s designed to be cleaned by the user.
@Integrity I'm mostly poking fun. But there is a reason why games cost less in other countries where typically wages are much lower.
Prices have already been raised in some of these territories to try and counter people buying from overseas digital stores, which really isn't fair on those communities. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.
I also remember the days when consoles weren't region free. If too many people start abusing this online loophole two things will likely happen.
OR
Neither is a good solution. I remember not being able to afford the games I wanted. The solution? I waited.
@Mauzuri
I’m playing Ghost at the moment. I started playing the game doing everything I came across. But last night I decided I’m going to burn my way through the rest of the story since I’m so overpowered at this point that I don’t feel any need to do anymore side quests.
With my current calendar, I’ll be finished with Ghost’s main story sometime next week. I’ll play side tales until Horizon comes out. After I’m done with Horizon I’ll play Iki island.
@themightyant
God I hope region locking stays buried in whatever hellish pit it was sent to.
One thing I always loved about Nintendo handhelds was that none of them were region locked. And starting with the Nintendo DS a lot of games that were Japan releases included the English localization.
Played a number of games months before they came out in the states.
@AtlanteanMan I think a possible solution would have been for them to sell another additional model with more storage. But I suspect they didn't want to complicate things with 3 models at launch. Plus a £600+ console 'looks' bad, even if we some of us would have paid it.
Additionally as I said prices for these drives are tumbling over time.
Personally I paid just over £100 for a 1TB nvme SSD in the sales. This same drive was over £200 when the PS5 first launched just over a year ago. Sony would have been buying, and selling, these for top dollar initially.
Considering Assassin's Creed Valhalla was bigger than this (until the recent patch), can't say I'm surprised.
And in Horizon's case, it's 86GB of top notch entertainment, I won't mind making room for it, not one "byte"
Just 4 weeks to go until launch day, not long now...
Removed - inappropriate language
@TheRedComet 100% I used to import a lot of games from Asia that were never released here. And some from the US. Thankfully more and more release in the west now, and in much better time.
I don't think Region locking is going to happen, although the number of 'deals' I see posted on things like HOTUKDEALS that involve purchasing off stores in places like Indonesia, and the amount of heat/likes/comments they get suggest this isn't small fry. I would understand if it did happen.
Some countries pricing has already gone up to counter this, which really isn't fair on local consumers. I like a good deal as much as the next man, but this is just selfish at the end of the day.
Some services like Steam have already put limits on how often you can change your store location. I came across this when I was I travelling for work which was a nuisance but effectively they are combatting people abusing the system. A shame a few bad actors are ruining it for everyone as usual.
Maybe yerup should just standardize Muricanese like Murica
@Mauzuri
Outside of a few forced stealth missions, you can go in swords blazing on anything you want to.
Once you upgrade to third tier armors you’re pretty much a God. Just get good at reading enemy special attacks and you’re set.
I used stealth solely to get the stealth based challenges at outposts. Other than that I do a stand-off, kill three of the poor ***** immediately, and then turn into nightmare fuel and massacre the rest one at a time.
Another thing. The forced stealth missions are easy. Just upgrade the ronin armor and upgrade your special hearing skill. My one complain about Ghost is that the enemy is really, really stupid. You can abuse their movement patterns.
@Medic_Alert You got money to burn. Spending $400 for 2tb SSD is insane. All you need is 1tb and I have tons of ps5 and PS4 games on my SSD since ps5 compresses a lot of big games now down to 30 plus gigs. Because you still have the main console storage plus the SSD and mine is not full yet. I paid $230 for a 1tb SSD. Unless you are playing single player games over and over again after beating them there's no reason to keep them installed on the drive. So it's just wasted space. Multiplayer games sure you can keep on the drive.
@themightyant I get it, think the exchange rate definetly helps. I'll bare it in mind, not something I've really thought much about or considered an issue. I too used to import games in the past. I remember paying £120 for Tekken 2 once just to play it early 😳
No worries saving my SSD space for male orientated games.
Oof. I might have to wait for a 4TB to become affordable before upgrading at this rate.
@Integrity Honestly I feel a little bad posting it. I don't like ad hominem attacks, and this felt a little like one, singling you out. Besides based on our other exchanges you seem like a good dude.
But I feel strongly about this issue. I have family and friends in parts of the world where game prices have almost doubled and they can barely afford new games at all now. Games feel like £120+ to them, based on spending power. This price hike is seemingly in part to clamp down on people like you buying games more cheaply using international stores.
At the same time I get it. We all like a deal, especially when Sony have pushed prices up. I like a good deal too, I just won't use the international stores or key sellers like G2A which I feel cross a moral line. But we all judge that line differently.
I guess my point is that sometimes there are potential downsides to getting things so cheaply we haven't considered.
Peace.
@themightyant no, it's fine I get it, you're being honest with me, I can appreciate that.
It really isn't something I've thought deeply about and have definetly only viewed it from my own perspective. I've only bought 5 games ever from foreign stores and I've only done it this generation because of Sony's price hike. Even in the sales Sony has kept the prices higher than previous generation's RRP which is frustrating so I practically felt entitled to do it, which isn't a defense, just a convenient excuse. I felt that buying them in the Turkish sales was fair. I haven't preordered HZD yet but I was seriously contemplating it. Now after speaking to you I'll stop to think about the bigger picture as a preorder is very different to a sale.
The irony for me is that I see MS allowing loopholes for people to get hooked to GP cheaply via buying Live from cheaper regions because it suits them seeing as GP is a massive loss-leader anyway, and that annoys me.
@Medic_Alert $330 isn't too bad. You definitely got it on sale. Congratulations. It's not like I didn't want the 2tb SSD for the ps5 but I bought mine as soon as they released the update. I should have waited for black Friday last year but I didn't see any for that price for 2tb. The 1tb were the only ones on sale and the 2tb are always sold out. I look for bargains but my ps5 was filling up fast and got tired of deleting games I still was playing so I understand where you are coming from. Have a good day!
@Integrity That's a fair response, I do get it. I don't like the £70 price either. And if it was just shafting Sony on this I wouldn't give two ****s. But I feel buying digitally from international does have a cost on other gamers.
As you mentioned If you shop around you can get it for far less than £70. PS4 version for £51 from Currys (with free upgrade using code ALOY15) or PS5 version for £59 from Simply games. (which may have a larger resale value) that's more reasonable for a title of this scope.
To be fair to Microsoft they ARE cutting down on the number of ways of getting GP cheaply too but there are a few loopholes still there.
@themightyant I always try to be fair and considerate of others Mr Ant. Unless they're rude, then fk'em 😁
Having a large file size is just so Sony can justify the $70 price, less than $1 per GB. 😂
Don't forget about the free ps4 to ps5 upgrade. It's the last PS game that will offer a free upgrade. Ps4 version is not available on ps5 store, preorder the ps4 version on the PS App, then on the 18th February you should be able to upgrade to the ps5 version for free. Save a tenner.
I've just pre ordered it on my PS4 & it says 86 GB
@Barryburton97 tlou2 was 77 gb though
@TheRedComet i'll do the same with ghost as well. did you do all the character side missions? heard those are important to the main story.
@middyone pretty sure LOU2 was about 100GB on my PS5, maybe the patch made it bigger?
Looking forward to it. Still need to look at picking up another SSD to install.
Why can't we decide the languages we need? Why do we have to download 10gb extra just to get language supports from 20 other countries if I only need English? Why is this still a thing in 2022?
In a very stacked year I will not be surprised if Forbidden West is my GotY.
@BAMozzy Europe also includes Oceania
@AtlanteanMan What are you talking about, PS5 is made to install another hard drive in. You don't void the warranty or have to "mess" with internals.
Sony even has offical videos on how to install ankther hard drive.
Wow, what happened to smaller games due to SSD?
@lolwhatno mr Ant pointed out things i didn't know which I appreciate 😁
@Bamila Download will be compressed (same as disc I imagine, otherwise PS4 wouldn't fit in 50Gb) and should then allow user to select which language they want. If it's a lazy installer, it'll just unpack and install all of them anyway!
@bjorn_oakenstream Didn't realise there was a Guy Ritchie Cockney Gangsters language option! That would be awesome!
@Would_you_kindly Sounds like PS4 is the same size - as expected.
@BAMozzy But when the console is not available anymore you probably cant upgrade anymore because they probably wont produce and its more expensive.
@GamerDad66 Read more articles there are a lot games that are smaller in size on PS5.
@TheRedComet the fan is easy to take out too if you have a t6 screwdriver bit..no warranty stickers there either..i took mine out the other weekend and gave it a going over with some cleaner and a little brush..
@Flaming_Kaiser I have no idea what you are responding too. All I said was that the 'extra' size of the EU version is probably down to more languages supported.
Then said it would be cool if Sony had a 'Direct Storage' like feature so you could just install the language support you want - thus reducing the size of the install. I don't need Spanish, French, German etc support so could just install the English language audio support to save Storage...
What that has to do with your comment, I'll never know...
ps4 version is going to be huge 100Gb+
This doesn't come out until it's 60 dollars.
This doesn't come out until it's 60 dollars.

This doesn't come out until it's 60 dollars.
@Barryburton97 possibly but I just googled it and that's what it said
Not sure if its been mentioned or discussed before but do we get to carry anything over from the previous game? Or is it the "oh no, this (random event) happened and i lost all my gear" type situation.
@BAMozzy You were talking about storage upgrades.
Me who only on occasion plays games above 20gb: Snickers
