Sony has just announced the first State of Play broadcast for 2022. This time, it's another one-game event, featuring none other than Gran Turismo 7.
As it says on the PlayStation Blog, this State of Play is all about Polyphony Digital's latest sim racer, and we can look forward to "just over 30 minutes of new PS5 footage and gameplay details". That's all we know right now, but half an hour of the fast-approaching racer sounds good to us.
It's set to take place on Wednesday 2nd February — that's in just a couple of days — at 2pm PST / 5pm EST / 10pm GMT / 11pm CET.
Are you excited to see Gran Turismo 7 get its time in the showroom? Will you be tuning into this State of Play? Tell us in the comments section below.

Please show us the chase cam view. Please
@Max_the_German Isn't CET just GMT+1?
@Max_the_German I’m sure you can work it out?
Were there previously any SoP’s that didn’t feature anything except the “main” game? Trying to set my expectations here.
@Voltan This is just Gran Turismo 7. Don't expect anything else whatsoever.
30 minutes for a car game? Big oof lol
But seriously, what can they show for 30 minutes that we haven't already seen?
Called it. Hope everyone lowered their expectations.
I love Gran Turismo but i’m not sure we really need 30 minutes of car goes vroom. If you’ll buy it you’ll buy it.
Would love to hear them announce it fully supports PSVR2. They will probably hold onto that until the PSVR2 State of Play though. A 30 minute deep dive is going to be great for all the Gran Turismo fans.
Whatever happens, I can’t wait to get this game.
Told you all that it was likely to be this.
@AFCC A fuller look at the campaign, new cars announced, maybe confirmation of VR support, online modes. Tons of stuff they can talk about.
30mins on a 'Racing' game? What are they going to do - show you a Lap on every track, show you numerous photo mode locations and numerous cars?
Racing sims are not exactly that 'complex' or 'new' that they require a LOT of explaining - its not like trying to introduce you to a new character in a new world, explaining who they are and some lore, not as if you have to explain the game-play loop or mechanics....
Only game I'll probably be buying at launch or shortly after launch this year. Still 30 mins seems like overkill for a GT showcase. Oh well...
@stu123 We probably won't hear anything about that until after Horizon and Elden Ring. There's a gap between them and Forspoken, I'm hoping we'll get some news then.
Sony come on - give us that VRR update.
@Max_the_German Added
I hope they talk about PSVR2 implementation. That's my sole interest in another GT.
Not excited for this really as the series doesn't do anything for me, but i knew the next SOP would focus on gran turismo given Horizon has already had one.
Hope everyone excited for this game enjoys the reveal though
@Perturbator This! GT7 is my most anticipated game of the year. I want this so much.
They might mention GTA enhanced and expanded not even on ps stote/ xbox store yet
Hardly surprised, I mean we had a SOP for Horizon last year and up till now no event for one of Sony’s biggest IP’s Gran T. Looking forward to watching it!
Interesting choice for the first State of Play for the year. I would understand GT7 getting a spotlight in a general one but an entire 30 minute show dedicated to it? Well I hope the folks who tune in enjoy but I'll be passing on this one.
@Voltan tlou part 2.
ghost of tsushima.
HFW.
I am curious what they can say and show for 30 minutes. I’m anticipating the game will be essentially old school Gran Turismo with the career path along with the online folded in. Surely there’s not much else to show besides a few new tracks.
Still, I’ve been excited for this as I’ve had trouble getting other racers to scratch the itch. Nothing quite feels and plays as authentically as GT.
Annoying that there is nothing about Spartacus, but that could all be made up potentially.
Looking forward to GT7. Hopefully they tell us why it needs to be always online and there is a decent reason.
This is my most antisipated title of the whole year ,it just beats GOW to the 1st position.I have played every game in the series and it will be good to have a full game to play after the slightly truncated version of GT Sport
Looking forward to seeing if they have some new or improved online features. Lobbies definitely need improving. Would be cool if they added some streaming settings for people who do commentary on league lobbies?
@jdv95 the Horizon SoP had a few small announcements besides Horizon. That's my point I don't remember the other 2.
But they did say they would be there that time and now they didn't, so there's probably going to be nothing.
How dissapointing.Never been into Gran Turismo so this will be the first State Of Play I don't even bother with.
@BAMozzy racing sims are extremely complex, if you actually play them on full settings.
It's good that Sony is trying to make sure this game doesn't get buried by the Horizon Forbidden West hype though it would've been nice to have had a State of Play with multiple games present.
This is great. Dive in to the menu system and the career mode. I want to see the structure and layout of races, are we going back to the license tests of old to be able to progress in to the higher tier races etc. Does rally still feel like ice skating as opposed to any other rally game...ever? I would like to see some sort of career advancement from the GT of old.
If you love GT you’ve already pre-ordered.
No State of Play needed.
Very disappointed about this. Yet again. Sony is just gut punch after gut punch with their announcements lately.
Yeah I think I'll be giving this one a hard pass.
1 ticket for the hype train please..
Genuinely cant wait to see what they have done regarding cars, tracks, licenses, endurance races, rally spec.
@Voltan I always enjoy a SoP more when they've jammed a few extra announcements onto the end. Seems that's what SoP started off as but as it's gone on they use it more for focusing on just one game.
I feel like this game is a really tough sell in 2022 for anyone who isn’t already a fan, and I doubt 30 mins of additional footage is going to change that.
It's a numbered GT. Licence tests > Race > Licence tests > Race. Crap AI. Something something ray tracing. The end.
I love GT btw. This one will not tear up the GT rulebook.
I think it’s fine for Gran Turismo to have its own event, but it would’ve been nice to get a game plan going for Q2 since the release schedule is essentially barren after March.
@JohntheRaptor I know all the tweaking etc can go quite technical and complex but the 'game-play' loop and mechanics are extremely basic. Even if you go manual, you still have Accelerate, decelerate and steer as the only controls and its not exactly got a 'complex' move set to master, lore and 'story' to set up, introduce us to Protagonists/antagonists, introduce us to the some of the biomes/enemy types, Combat mechanics etc etc.
The most 'complex' thing is the manual car tweaking and/or upgrades you can do but even that isn't something you'd expect them to go 'in depth' on.
A Racing game isn't the most 'complex' to show off and explain what the game is and offers. Whilst it maybe 'very' complex in the way Physics and AI are handled, even getting into 'very complex' physics of 'tire grip' on different surfaces right down to how much 'rubber' is left, the tire/brake temps, ride heights, wing angles etc, etc, its still a 'simple' game and hasn't changed too much since the first racing game (like Pole Position) came out.
You have 'vehicles' racing around circuits with the objective to be first passed the finish line. Regardless of the discipline, its either the first to cross the finish line or the person that covers the distance in the shortest time (point to point racing) but in any case, its still not a 'complex' idea that takes 30mins to convey. A 10min video of the game looking at some cars, some tracks, photo mode and end with a 1 lap race and the 'replay' mode, maybe also look at photo mode and you have 'everything' you need to know - especially with a voice over telling you what 'improvements' to physics/AI etc they have implemented...
I voted Race with Ryan, Team Sonic Racing, Skylanders Imaginators and Cars 3 (Disney Pixar) for cartoonish racing games over than Gran Turismo games.
Had this pre ordered for what feels like a long time now.
Very much looking forward to this.
For those complaining about 30 mins: @bamozzy
5 to 10 mins will be showing a replay in car then trackside. That's a given.
5 mins will be explaining the new FIA season which will no doubt start within the first month or 2 of release.
The other 15/20 will no doubt be showcasing new and returning tracks, car brands new to GT, day/night cycle, updated physics and weather systems. Not to mention a deeper dive in to the menus and that.
30 mins isn't all that when you think about it. It might just seem like once you've seen a car youve seen them all but not really.
You are massively oversimplifying because you probably aren't that keen on racing games.
You can say the exact same for an open world RPG.
Basic jist of the story. Go from point a to point b doing missions. Find collectibles. Here's some enemies. Fin. Within 5 minutes.
Dear all,
If 30 minutes is too much for you, you can simply not watch it.
There. Problem magically solved.
@fatdragon. Man you dont have a good taste at all if you pick them over god of war and horizon forbidden west.and even games like dying light 2 stay human and elden ring.haha.word up son
Awesome!!!
😀
Going to preorder this weekend 💸👍
Edit
Wow so much drama in the comments it’s hilarious tbh.
Not a big fan of racing games but I might give it a watch anyway. Last GT I played was 5 and thought it was interesting. Would prefer to have a new Driveclub with an open world maybe for a racer.
Was expecting to see the State of Play to be mostly focused around Horizon Forbidden West with Sifu and GT7 also included but not one for just GT7 on it's own. Will see how it the game looks and maybe it can tempt me to get another GT.
Lets show 30 minutes of a game we know exactly what we're are getting. That'll show em them microsofts.
Hahahahhhaahaha
Interesting to see if and how, they have improved the AI mainly, as never been that great in previous versions..
Otherwise lookin, forward to a bit more info..
@naruball Also, they shouldn’t voice their displeasure, right?
Anything else Sony? Like a statement on how you don't plan on sitting complacently on your butts while the industry gets slowly bought out around you?
Any dormant or new IP's to bring in?
I am hugely excited about GT7 - and worth remembering GT is still Sony’s most commercially successful series by some way. I know racing games aren’t seen the way they used to be but this is hugely exciting for millions of racing fans.
It’s weird man: I don’t care about Microsoft and potential Sony acquisitions. I just want to get excited about a game I’ve always loved.
@playstation1995 so I dont have good taste so how is GT the biggest selling Playstation franchise ever,I played Horizon 1 and didnt like it
The beauty of dedicated SOP'S, you know exactly what is going to be about. Your either interested or your not, 5, 30 or 90 mins doesn't matter if your not.
Don't understand why people are mad at Sony for showcasing one of their biggest games of the year that they've sunken millions into. They can still hold other events you know.
@FatalBubbles Their displeasure over what exactly? The existence of an event that they don't care for?
My hope, Spartacus + GT7 day one.
Can i dream?
Omg..this really means they don't have a big event before March 4...
Yeezus. I hope is not just god of war ragnarok the one after this 😂. Where's the release of the game too?
Is this game always online? I really don't like they went with that.
People: “we haven’t seen enough of x game”
gets 30 minutes of gameplay
People: “ooof this is too much”
@velio84 would like to race trial mountain again too. Just for the nostalgia
PSVR2 announcement please!
Be ready for absolutely nothing of interest unless all you want to see is GT7.
Folks need to remember that Gran Turismo is still Playstation's biggest franchise in terms of units sold. It's also the biggest game Sony has in terms of eSports as well. I know a lot want to hear about PSVR2, Spartacus, new games etc but GT7 is a nearly a month away and we haven't had a big blowout on the game yet. Right now Sony's full focus is rightly on Horizon and GT and they need to get them out of the way. It was like back in 2020 when everyone was desperate for PS5 news but Sony had to get TLOU2 and GoT out of the way first.
it would be nice to get a trailer for god of war ragnarok or maybe a confirmed release date because they said its still coming this year.
I don't think we will get any new announcements until horizon and gran Turismo are released.
Yeah I will be 100% skipping this, lol.
Looking forward to it. I won't buy until on a sale, but still want to see more about it. Can't wait to figure out how many turns I need to stay on the road to earn that elusive licence.
Watch them have a 10 min addition of Deathloop footage.
I'm not a fan of the way State of Plays are generally handled; emphasis on a single game. If you're not looking forward to that game, there's basically no reason to tune in.
Then on top of all the Microsoft massive announcements... 30 min of a single game is Sony's answer?
RIP South African users (GMT+2)
I don't get the complains..playstation is and will be about games above all..so there you have it..If all you want to hear is subscriptions and developer buyouts then you are at the wrong camp.
@naruball I’ve seen enough of your comments to know your passive aggressive approach but I’ll bite.
Clearly with a SoP they wanted to see more than just GT7. Everyone is excited about the potential revamp of + and Now, they likely wanted to see that. People are excited for games they are interested in, which in this case isn’t GT7. They want to see if there is any response to MS acquisition. Etc.
I understand you like to snipe at people who have the opposite opinion of you though.
Haven't people learnt by now that Sony operate at their own pace?
They'll release info on Spartacus when they're ready, same with impending new games.
Just relax, HFW is next month and there are some big third party games on the, ahem, horizon.
I'm not a big fan of racing games BUT I am interested in seeing more on GT7 as it is a major new release from them.
@Americansamurai1 that sucks.
In a month we'll only have god of war to look forward to soon ish. They probably give the release date in a tweet.
I hope spider-man 2 is not the only thing coming out in 2023 and for me that could get delayed to 2024.
Where's factions 2? -_-
@Col_McCafferty Man screw spartacus.
People now getting hyped for services?
I honestly hope sony games don't go day 1. Don't want them to take it easy with their games because they won't sell as many copies. If it comes out on the service X amount of time later, millions will still wait.
I hope it's just a ps now and ps plus merge with backwards compatible added on top of it.
Would love if there's a discount of $10 for their games while I'm subbed.
Nice! Thirty minutes of Car porn. Hopefully the storyline is good.
How utterly bizarre, I understand 30 minutes of Horizon or GOW but for a car game that you race around in circles? 😅 I think a 2 minute trailer would get the same point across but better.
Ain't no casual sitting for 30 minutes just watching cars and the GT fans are going to buy it regardless of what you show (you might even spoil some surprises for them) so I don't know who's this for?
@AdamNovice tons of stuff, yes! All equally boring? Also yes x)
Looking forward to this since it's stepping away from GT Online only & going back to the OG GT games. Played since the beginning but stopped after GT5. Already pre-ordered but like to dive in again after al those years. Can't believe it's been +10 years already. This franchise was the reason I bought a PSX in the first place.
@RevGaming I wouldn't worry I think they're keeping a lot of stuff secret. I think we will get god of war plus another game this year. 2023 will be a lot of new games too, don't forget how many studios they own, but we only know what a few of them are doing not to mention second party titles.
Dare I say Cyberpunk next gen footage? 👀
Maybe they've actually reinvented the wheel ... and need som extra time as to just, you know, explain how it's all rolling
Kind of odd that they're doing a GT-only SoP when we have a bunch of stuff rumored to release in the next month or so (Cyberpunk on PS5, Ghostwire Tokyo, GTA V PS5, etc.).
@fatdragon. Horizon zero dawn is way better than gran turismo.i rather play that.horizon zero dawn is a way better game.30 minutes of a racing game😴😴😴😴.come on playa.word up son
Don't get all the negativity in the comments tbh...30 minutes on the latest edition of one of the very biggest PlayStation IPs? The first full edition for 9 years? Count me in!
I fully expect to have to scrape my jaw off the floor at 10.30pm (UK time) on Wednesday!
It makes sense to have 30 minutes focussed on GT7 - as the first mainline GT game in nearly a decade, there will be millions of PS4/5 owners who have never played one and so a deep dive is exactly what it needs for this new audience. We're not all GT5/GT6 veterans...
@Marquez I agree fully. Man I remember when GT3: A-Spec came out on the PS2...I don't think any game since has blown my socks off quite as much as that one did.
Maybe GT7 will have the same impact on a new generation of gamers, although there are a number of stunning racing games around these days.
@TeapotBuddha we don’t yet know what the outside car view looks like. I’m keen to see but wouldn’t buy on release as it’ll benefit from 6 months of patching
Although the graphics look amazing, I'm most intrigued about how the dualsense haptics will feel when driving.
I have a feeling it'll be a game changing experience!
30 minutes on a racing game?
Ugh.
Really wish it was a general SoP. Oh well.
Every game is getting a special SoP.
OMG one of the most important PS franchise ever is getting 10 minutes more than the other games got for their SoP!!
Sony is punching gamers iN tHe GuTs. Arrggg. Why Sony why? A rAcInG game show for half an hour. I can’t take it. Fire Jim. Haha
Sarcasm 😅🤖
What a circus guys 😅
Xbox gets better fan responses if Spencer says murder is bad 😅
@naruball Some users here have their own schtick or calling card In the site, yours seems to be to always go after people complaining. Doesn't matter what they are complaining about right or wrong, I personally prefer Playstation1995's word up son to your calling card if I'm being honest 🙂
@FatalBubbles "I understand you like to snipe at people who have the opposite opinion of you though"
Gotta love the irony. You say that, and then you cry foul when someone responds to you in kind. Lucky for you, I won't bother. You don't deserve it.
@Juanalf you do you, boo. Spend your entire life complaining, if you want to. Whatever makes you happy or keeps you going anyway.
@SoulChimera exactly what l was hoping too, it's got to be fully playable with psvr2 but l agree we won't hear about it until the hotly anticipated (by me at least!) psvr2 state of play
This is cool for fans of the game, but I really wish Sony would make their State of Play presentations about more than one game. Or at least have more frequent presentations.
@Americansamurai1 Yeah but most of them released their games in 2020, 2021 or will this year.
I'm not sure. I don't think 2-3 major games per year won't be enough
This could be a game changer especially if the entire game will be compatible with psvr2. 🙂🙂
@RevGaming Idk, they said they had like 25 exclusives in development. Plus who knows what 3rd exclusives they might buy. There's a rumor that the new bioshock will be PS5 exclusive.
@Americansamurai1 are the 25 Triple A? Not saying it needs to be all big games, but that's what I mostly anticipate from them.
Sony has been keeping things close to the chest (except wolverine) if they are not releasing in 1-2 years. Ps4 was the opposite. They're closing the gap now.
I don't want them to rush. I just think they should acquire a couple of triple A studios. Fromsoftware making Bloodborne 2 or Demon Souls 2 with DE remake graphics, maybe work with Techland for a new IP. They need a triple A fighter too.
I'm more intrigued by their second party mainly because they're making multiplayer games and I want to know how Sony would do them. Not half ass games like D.allstars. They said Deviation, Firewalk and Haven studios are making triple A games. Firewalk and Deviation sound like they're making shooters.
We'll see, but hopefully we don't have to wait for June or September like the last two years.
I know Media Molecule is the odd one here. Idk what they will do next. Asobi should try to make a Astrobot Odyssey/Galaxy game.
My Brum Brum is ready !
PSVR 2 Gran turismo 7 Woooooooooooooooo !
What i've seen of gran turismo 7 so far it looks outstanding i am so excited and i am not even a huge car racing fan.
@RevGaming Yeah, I'm not for sure. I doubt all 25 will be triple A, but I hope they diversify. They need a FPS and I hope they make a RPG since Bethesda is gone. They got some massive studios that working on multiple projects. I think insomniac is working on more than just spiderman And wolverine. Santa Monica is working on a new game possibly sci-fi. Twisted metal might be coming back. I hope we get a new resistance. There just alot of possibilities. I think sony learned a lesson with the PS4, at e3 2016 they announced so many games that the next few years they didn't have much to announce. They're trying to spread everything out to build anticipation.
@naruball I assumed that’s where you would go instead of actually commenting on what we were talking about.
I just sick of seeing you passively aggressively attack people when you don’t agree with them. I’ll make sure to block you so we don’t have to do this again.
Let the GT7 hype commence!
For goodness sakes Sony, 30 minutes for a game where we already know that it's going to be solid, after months of silence! The only justification for this is to also introduce psvr2.
Hard pass...Why is this needed for a racing game? Spoiler alert you drive around a circuit track in a car over and over again.
@AFCC pot holes maybe? No idea.
Damn, so many disrespect for Sony's biggest IP.
@AFCC
The Ford Sierra Cosworth
30 minutes of car porn and slow talking Japanese men. Oh yeah!
So this is the State of Play that was leaked a while ago to be at the start of February... too bad it proves to be a letdown.
More than 30min of the same game? Sounds more like a marketing strategy, meant to increase the game's popularity and buying probabilities...
Oh well... maybe next time the show will provide more info on subjects we actually care a lot about, like PS+/PS now future and PSVR2. And of course, presentations for more games than one.
Talk about underwhelming.
Who knows, maybe Wolverine is a playable driver.
@Kohaku lol 30 min of that
@Snick27 no potholes? 0/10
Car go vroom. Now what to show for other 29 minutes and 58 seconds.
Hard pass on this State of Play, bring on the next one already please.
After the Bungie news, I'm going to make a bold prediction. GT7 gets a PC version announced in this State of Play and the online only requirement previously announced is for "live service" reasons.
Great - those of us who are looking forward to this title will be happy to get a better look at what we'll be buying. Those who don't want GT don't need to bother.
I must say I'm getting a little bored of FH5 now, so a more serious racer cant come soon enough for me, and I've always enjoyed the GT games.
@Th3solution
I hear you, but I'm actually really interested in set up and physics, AI etc and I love that these SOP's allow the devs the time to properly deep dive into lots of the functionality.
Smaller reveals are little more than the advertising on the back of the box, ok for people who wish to make a quick judgement, but not enough depth to make an informed choice.
To be fair, they are going to be preaching to the converted as anyone whos watching will be a GT fan - no point in watching otherwise!
Looking forward to a more realistic racer....
@stu123 Me too!!!
maybe…just maybe its 30 minutes because there is a firmware update to discuss as well. GT7 has featured heavily in the HDR tone mapping promotional material. Maybe VRR / HDR auto tone mapping is also on the schedule?
