It’s been a good week for fans of gyro controls. Following confirmation that Horizon Forbidden West will include the feature at launch, Fortnite has now announced that it’s incorporating support for the DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers, on the PlayStation 5 and PS4 respectively. A brilliant video below explains how it all works, so check that out now:
For those who don’t have time to watch, gyro aiming complements traditional dual-stick controls, allowing you to fine-tune your aim by making subtle adjustments physically with the pad. By default, this only activates when you aim, although the Battle Royale has a dizzying number of settings, allowing you to turn it on all the time if you like.
It’s worth noting that enabling the gyro will remove aim assist, so while you’ll have a lot more precision with practice, you may find the learning curve steep at first. There are a ton of settings, though, including sensitivity and acceleration – and Flick Stick has also been incorporated to complement the feature, effectively allowing you to “flick” the stick in the direction you want to look.
While Flick Stick ultimately means that you can no longer look up-and-down with the right analogue input, it’s designed to be used alongside gyro to give even greater control. As alluded to above, you can faff around with these settings until you find a system that works for you. Personally, we think we’re going to opt for the traditional gyro controls that only activate when we’re aiming our weapons.

I love that PlayStation games are finally introducing gyro controls!
@The_Pixel_King Yes! It's long overdue! Hopefully the trend continues now...
@get2sammyb Gyro controls are literally the only reason I sometimes plump for a game on Switch instead of PS5. Hopefully, the trend does indeed continue.
@Gloamin Biggest game in the world incorporating what looks like great support has got to be a positive for the feature in general.
Had a mare with Nintendo customer support this morning over Fortnite.
Apparently, due to a new rule, kids under 10 aren’t allowed to use voice chat anymore (even with friends). And because we were honest and set my Nephew’s Nintendo account up using his real dob, (he’s 9), he can no longer chat with his friends - which is a huge part of the Fortnite experience.
This new rule even overrides parental controls, so if you try to allow party chat, it won’t allow you to save the settings. And Nintendo are refusing to allow us to change the dob on the account because, reasons…
You can change the dob on PlayStation but because both accounts are linked with epic games, he can’t party chat in PlayStation now either. How stupid is that!
Currently trying to resolve with Epic Games who at least seem to know what they’re doing (because, Nintendon’t). I thought Sony customer support was bad but Nintendo is even worse.
Good news about the Gyro support though 🤪
This was the only reason I used to play it on Switch. Great news
Is this live now or a future update? Flick Stick sounds weird but I like gyro. Not like my aiming can be any worse. I'm not sure I even knew there was aim assist. Next time I boot it up I'll go look.
@rjejr I think it's out now, or in an update due today.
Nice.
With gyro, it sucked that you often had to buy the potato version of a game on the Nintendo Switch in order to gain access to the feature on console. DS4 and Dualsense can both do gyro very well. No reason for it not to be an option in any game with aiming.
@BritneyfR_ee I've gone thru so much trouble w/ my kids accounts over the years, no way our parents could have prepared us for this.😂
Part of it was my fault, when we got our PS3 I set up my kids accounts in the UK and Hong Kong, my wife was Tokyo, so I could play demos from this regions. On my PS4 when my kids were older they made their own new US accounts so they have no history on PS3. I think we lied about their ages on PS4 after using their real birthdays on PS3 and I made them both 18. They're 17 and 19 now.
When we moved those accounts to PS5 around Thanksgiving I mistakenly redeemed our PS+ code on my kids accounts - it's more difficult to tell which account you're logged into on PS5 w/o themes when you've only owned the console for 20 minutes - so now while I do have access to the Collection nobody has access to my 6 years of PS+ games.😝
On the Nintendo side my kids are still locked behind their real birthdays, I have the parent app on our Switch, and when the older kid got their Switch 2 years account I think they set up a new account. Neither of my kids have any interest in My Nintendo, no coins for them. I linked their own emails and accounts at some point but they just couldn't be bothered. Actually they have their own emails now, those were the ones I set up for them as kids, going unused, collecting junk mail. smh
On the PC side my youngest now basically owns my Steam account. I'm not a PC gamer so it's not a big deal but it's still under my rjejr name, not sure they can change it. It's linked to their PayPal account, 16 year olds can have PayPal accounts apparently, and I'll never game on it again, so it's weird.
So think carefully about any online move you make. Sorry that's of little comfort now I know, but it's crazy running all of these accounts, emails, ids, for so many people on so many systems. I still don't know my kids phone numbers, they've had them for like 10 years. 😂
So, if your kid sees rjejr on Fortnite ask them to take it easy on me, I suck. But I won't be talking to them, I didn't even know Fortnite had voice chat until this article. Yup, I'm that old.
This is an actually liked thing?
Sounds like a nightmare
@lolwhatno Ralizah? They posted right after you.😁
@get2sammyb Well that certainly narrows it down. 😉
I kid, I kid, thanks.
@BritneyfR_ee Sounds like something you could bring to the broader Fortnite community on something like Reddit (their sub is r/rfortnitebr) for actual input/assistance.
@get2sammyb
Hey Sammy, maybe we can have a new one of your helpful PushSquare guides for games which include Gyro Controls please?
I'm going to give it a try on HFW maybe, don't usually use them but after reading recently feel it might be pretty cool on the Dualsense.
@rjejr Haha this comment really made me laugh. Very relatable 🤣
The whole process is insanely complicated.
I thought I had an easy solution to my issue but it hasn’t quite gone according to plan…
So, Epic games unlinked my Nephew’s original Nintendo account and they also removed the restriction that allowed me to link a new Nintendo account (they said you can only do this once every 12 months).
I created a new email address and set up a new 16+ Nintendo account. Then I linked it with my Nephew’s epic games account but it still says voice chat is disabled! Aggghhh!😫
It must remember the original dob or something because I use my own dob on all the other linked accounts.
Back to Epic games I go… 🤪
I don't even play Fortnite, but this is amazing. Gyro aiming is incredible and it really should become the standard for consoles.
@Jacko11 I used to think gyro was stupid... but then I tried it. It's insanely more accurate than just using the thumb sticks and there's really no going back once you adapt to it.
@BritneyfR_ee Good luck. I hate when you finally figure out a solution then go through all the steps and it still doesn't work. 😝 Worst case scenario, can the 9yo just do Nintendo's method of online and Discord or something? My kids live on Discord, going off to college, and a pandemic, will do that.
Technology+kids=😵
when it comes to gyro controls I can take it or leave it..
I can take it on the nintendo switch in portable mode (actually moving the whole screen around and seeing the aim change in line with where you're pointing the screen)
But, I can leave it if I'm playing with just a controller (PS5, nintendo switch in docked mode, etc) - I just find it too easy to move the controller while pulling the trigger and missing the shot completely
WUUUUUUUUUT
Bonkin'. Gyro controls are great.
This is massive news
Switch players already support gyro. It's PS players we need buy in from.
Between Fortnite (biggest online game on PS) and Horizon Forbidden West (biggest single player game on PS) that could be enough to spark the gyro revolution, similar to how Splatoon 2 and Zelda BotW did so on Nintendo Switch.
Flick stick should not be attempted until after mastering gyro aiming, fyi.
There are 2 approaches to gyro. One is shooting from the Hip, or Hip Aiming. This requires gyro to always be on, which requires more steady hands.
The other is where gyro is only activated when aiming down sights (ADS aiming). This is the preferred method for most FPS. That way gyro is not active except when you're actually zooming in to aim.
Find whichever works best for you, depending on the game. For Horizon, ADS would be preferred, imo. For Fortnite, maybe ADS, but also Hip Aiming could be useful for quick camera turns when building.
And what's most crucial is dialing in the right sensitivity. You want it fast enough you can aim in a good sized radius with minimal hand movement. But not so sensitive it's hard to control or dial in on a headshot. The lower the sensitivity the more accurate you become, BUT, the less range you have. The ideal sensitivity is usually somewhere in the middle.
I think I’ll just stick with analog sticks with aim assist.
Every time I’ve tried gyro I’ve hated it. It was way too sensitive and I’m anything but steady handed.
With that said… I may jump into a creative game and play around with it just to see if it’s gotten any better since I last tried it (Breath of the Wild).
