Remember Beyond Good & Evil 2? Remember the swearing monkey? Remember when it was meant to be getting a beta in 2019? Well, to put it bluntly, we wouldn't get your hopes up for this thing ever releasing. As if it wasn't already obvious, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is probably in serious development hell — and a new report from Bloomberg feels like a nail in the coffin.
The report states that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in pre-production following five years of development. In other words, Ubisoft just hasn't been able to get this game off the ground. Remember, a gameplay demonstration was supposed to happen in 2021, but it never materialised, and then rumours started to swirl regarding a deeply troubled dev cycle, with insiders claiming that the title was still "several years away".
It's crazy to think that Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced all the way back in 2017 for PlayStation 4. The only gameplay footage we ever really got was in 2018 — but now it's abundantly clear that it was nowhere near being a finished product.
Were you still looking forward to Beyond Good & Evil 2? Do you ever think it's going to release? Give us a shrug in the comments section below.

What they wanted to do with the made me lose total interest always online, focus on multiplayer and being connected just drop the game i had no interest anymore anyway.
I had high hopes as I enjoyed the first many years ago. I wanted to see what they could do with it. Its too bad.
I know a couple of people who’ll be heartbroken!
Ubisoft, prime sellers of smoke and NFTs.
Is this that game where the creator reportedly kept having them start over whenever he came up with a new idea? And then he quit? If so it makes sense why this happened.
It barely (if at all) resembled Beyond Good and Evil anyway. It's probably for the best sadly. Sorry to the fans out there!
I think Far Cry 6 may have been the last game I buy from Ubisoft, unless they decide to revive Rayman & Splinter Cell, and by the time that happens; Microsoft will have acquired them.
5 years?!! Plenty, release it now. What's wrong with Ubisoft? Battlefield 2042 got 15 months of development time and that turned out ok.
Not sure why they went after this game anyways. The first game was great but didn't sell to warrant a AAA sequel all these years later. I don't understand some of the poor decisions these massive game companies make. Where is a new Rayman Ubi? Seriously
@nessisonett I would be if this wasn't 100% inevitable, even before Michel Ancel retired. Though that was the final nail in the coffin. Had a few years expecting this.
It looked interesting but they just couldn't decide what they wanted it to be. There's a Mass Effect shaped hole to fill but no devs seemingly want to step into it.
I remembering being so hyped at that gameplay demo and their vision - even tho it did seem like an unrealistic vision.
After this long, it’s probably for the best to axe it and Move on
Their incentive to crowd-base the design elements and music was weird enough. I didn't see this one taking off...too bad, I did want to fly a ship as a chimp 😕
At this point I wish they would just cancel it.
"It's crazy to think that Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced all the way back in 2017"
It's been longer than 5 years since announcement. I mentioned this before in 2 articles about this game. I guess you guys don't read my comments?
Bit of a shame, I had this on my list as the trailer was hilarious and unique. Not the umpteenth sequel to a franchise.
However, this isn’t the only Ubisoft game stuck in development hell. There’s also the Assassin Creed Black flag spin off that’s missing in action.
I recall the first game was good, but it was never a massive epic. Feels like the sequel was getting so ambitious... moving away from the original.
Glad I was never interested. Sucks for fans though.
It always looked way too over ambitious.
This reeks of Duke Nukem Forever.
Just kill development. If they decide to force this through, it’ll be just like Forever.
I think Michael Ancel retiring didn't help anything, I feel like he was the major creative force behind the game and without him the team probably had little guidance. I am almost convinced this game is vaporware, I wish they would have just scaled it back and made it simpler, like the first game instead of getting too ambitious because if they did that the game possibly could have been released a long time ago.
I've been in the space monkey program and I haven't received any news on the game in 2 years... they didn't even update the preferred platforms. It still says ps4 or Xbox one. At this point if the game development is still not going well they should just cancel it.
Ubisoft is the king of vaporware.
"The report states that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in pre-production following five years of development."
correction: "The report states that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in pre-production following five years of diddle-daddling and gobbledygook."
fixed!
It was announced all the way back in 2017? Good lord that's been a hot minute.
Yeah I don't think this game is going to see the light of day.
@Dpishere i agree. what makes this situation all the more alarming is that beyond good and evil 2 was actually announced all the way back in 2008 before going silent for ten long years! so essentially, this game has turned into vaporware TWICE now! i don't think i have ever seen that happen before on two seperate productions of the same troubled game. i get the feeling that ubisoft only greenlit this game for the sake of retaining ancel by way of a vanity project, but clearly it was not enough to keep him onbard.
That's fine. The footage we saw was a disgrace.
@Broosh I feel like crowd basing art and character designs never goes well for anyone. Last game I remember doing that was Mega Man Legends 3, and well.....
It was dead on arrival.
It didn't share anything with the original game, the 18+ monkey was so stupid and the whole concept looked like a compilation of worst Ubisoft practices (before nft).
Just want another 2D Rayman . Also really wanted WiLD, but they killed that off too.
Ubisoft is so pathetic. The game is struggling because they dump all their money into their 100 different Tom Clancy live service games that idk why anyone buys.
I'd prefer it if they just fixed the X/Y ratio conversion for the first game.
That’s pretty sad actually, come on Ubi.
@riceNpea Yeah BF 2042 isnt the example i would use.
Yeah, probably a good thing. Now for that Prince of Persia remake to be forgotten and abolished unless it comes out looking like an entire new game.
You mean the game that looked or felt nothing like the game it was a sequel to with vague and uncertain descriptions of what it's actually about for which the company begged the fans to create the content for the game for free, and then the creator/director quit and ran off into the woods, literally, is vaporware? I never saw this coming.
What became of all the people who joined Ancel's Space Monkey Program? (I so wish I was making that up.)
Coming from Ubi, this is really not a surprise. Might be that it didn't had enough micro transactions in the mix, so not worth the ruckruck of developing it.
It's probably for the best. Literally no one wanted or asked for this version of BG&E 2.
Let's keep it that way. For all of Ubisoft's games.
I was looking forward to it, especially with this-gen to power it, but shame they didn't more time on the game than the CGI trailer. When I heard creator left, I knew it would go down hill!
Maybe MS need to buy them out and get the game out the door, like Psychonauts 2 ? Don't have me for saying that, lol
I'm considering this game dead/canceled until an official update happens.
I'm going to keep hoping it happens. Obviously we haven't seen much aside from the trailer but i'm all for big budget games that do something different.
ubisoft took all the assets from this game and put them into that new Avatar game
The ps3/360 era game felt far more like a proper sequel to the events of what was a single player arcade adventure game....they only ever seemingly greenlit this on the basis of changing it to an online mmo-style mtx ridden open world extravaganza trading off the first game in name only!🙄
Imagine if they stuck to a single player sequel based off finding P'eyj they'd had this out years ago!
Feels like forever ago that they released that cinematic trailer. All I remember is it looked bad and had foul language. Oh well some games just weren't meant to be.
After the demo showing the vast scale, and then the creator being forced into retirement after rumours of harassment allegations came to light, I'm not surprised this is still in development hell.
Aww man
(Extra characters so I can post this)
Couple more years, and this brand will be forgotten.
So sad about this. Hopefully they get it together.
Honestly I wish they'd just done a direct sequel to the first one. I didn't like the direction of 2, including the swearing monkey. I'm also off Ubisoft games whilst they continue their NFT push anyway.
@Flaming_Kaiser thats why I said it. It was a joke.
For the best. The original is up on sale right now, cost less than a Big Mac.
@riceNpea I said it before and ill say it again i get so many weird responses here i never know when someone is serious.
@Flaming_Kaiser 👍😁 always take mine as a joke unless I'm off on a rant about FIFA or some other injustice 😊
In all fairness it looked a bit *****. They made it all immature and sweary to appeal the X-Box 360 generation.
@riceNpea I read responses where people blame gamers for buying a PS4 game that doesnt run on good on their PS4. Because you should not play Cyberpunk PS4 on your PS4 meant for the new generation. 🤣🤣😂😂😐
@CupidStunt I wa shocked how they destroyed a game with such a unique look and made it so boring.
@Flaming_Kaiser I had no idea where they were going with this game. It seems they didn't either.
It's for the best. The game was nothing like the first one.
Just remake the original in 4k and ray tracing and be done with it.
