Grand Theft Auto V — and GTA Online, which will be available separately — are making the leap to PlayStation 5 a little later this month. Rockstar Games has finally given us a few details on what to expect, and it seems as though the studio has added plenty of bells and whistles.
The PS5 version of the ever-popular sandbox will feature three visual modes. You'll be able to choose from Fidelity Mode (4K with ray tracing, 30 frames-per-second), Performance Mode (upscaled 4K, 60 frames-per-second), and Performance RT (upscaled 4K with ray tracing, targeting 60 frames-per-second). On the topic of visuals, this new version will apparently benefit from all kinds of enhancements and improvements, such as a more densely populated open world, improved lighting, explosions, and more.
On PS5, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers with the DualSense controller are supported too, as is 3D audio. Faster loading times are naturally part of the deal as well. It sounds like a pretty high-effort port to us.
As for GTA Online, the PS5 version will have an overhauled on-boarding section and a tidier front end that should make for a smoother experience.
Furthermore, any progress you've made in GTA 5 and GTA Online on PS4 can be transferred over to the PS5 versions, allowing you to pick up where you left off. This is done by uploading your data to the cloud via Rockstar Games Social Club.
There's no word on an upgrade path for PS4 owners, so as of right now, it's looking like the PS5 version will cost you. We'll check with Rockstar and update if we hear any different. It's worth remembering that PS Plus members will gain access to GTA Online as part of their subscription when it launches on the 15th March, so that's something.

Jesus, I don't get it..... Why would there need to be 3 different modes for this dated ongoing cash grab.
This is what.... It's 4th console or third? Should it not be just be all those modes, all the time?
@KundaliniRising333 Exactly my thoughts. It goes back 2 gens, yet still there need to be compromises!? Also, why aren't they up-front about an upgrade so short before release?
RT Performance is a positive surprise!
My opinion of GTA V at this point... Meh.
My bet is that it will look worse than PC on ultra (less vegetation and density) but with RT reflections on cars.
They will charge full price with no ps4-ps5 path, while companies like Capcom just announced 3 game upgrades for free.
They are not showing any screenshots (other than 3 very edited and obviously photoshop-treated pics), any videos and no price.
While the game will be out in 11 days.
This smells like a train wreck, just like the Definitive trilogy
There's always new public... err gamers to hook. I don't see the problem with this re re re remaster. I'm curious about the RT implementation. I started playing it on PS4 when it launched, but I think I got around 25% of the story and then I dropped it, couldn't stand the framerate, but I liked the game so far. So now I might be able to play it through...
@Phelaidar seems pretty likely. On the RT side, it will be better used for GI but it's like dreaming. In fact I maybe prefer a 1080 game with full realtime GI...
@tameshiyaku just see the Mesa they did with this GTA collection. Highly outdated graphics but even there different graphic modes, all with their own problems.
Simply a no buy for these old games. Simple as that. I played GTA5 on the Xbox 360 in 2013…
There are so many good open world games out there. No reason to buy this for the full price. People who missed GTA5 so far, they can buy this new version, but they shall please weit for a discount.
If there's a free upgrade (probably not likely) I'll give it a bash.
Otherwise, been there done that, more times that I care to remember, and don't fancy forking out again.
@Texan_Survivor in general you’re right but it’s not as simple as that. Maybe the old engine is the limiting factor. This is no game or engine that was developed with new consoles in mind.
@Dudditz09 no info about a free upgrade. Seems that they will sell this again for the full price.
Hurry up and make GTA 6, that's what we're waiting for.
It's time for the Return of the King.....of open world games.
😉
It's been so long I played the campaign, and I had such a good time, that I think I'm OK buying it a second time (as long as it's not $60 or $70).
I have been looking for it to see a price point but it hasnt been on the store or Amazon. Currently the ps4 version is £15 and if there was an upgrade path would be the cheaper option down the line
@Texan_Survivor @tameshiyaku @KundaliniRising333 you're confusing the general complexity of games between generations, with graphics specifically. For one thing, ray tracing is an absolute pain in the bum, hence why this is the first generation of consoles that's implemented it. A PS3 era game with added ray tracing isn't necessarily going to get any better FPS than a PS4 era game with added ray tracing, because ray tracing itself takes a bigger toll on frame rate than anything else, even on GPUs that can actually do it in real time
@danlk1ng See, in some cases your thoughts make sense, here though no. We know damn well this isnt going to be a complete dark souls like overhaul where different performance modes may be needed. We aren't getting completely revamped assets bringing this ps3 game up to current gen. What's going to come out is just the phoned in hard to notice lighting adjustments, framerate improvements, and loading times. Ray tracing or even resolution in a game this dated visually only makes the dated look sharper, not improved from a design standpoint.
If spider man can get a performance rt mode, or a game like ratchet and clank, there really isnt a justification why this dated mess can't. It requires more than the copy and paste cash grab remaster/remake/upgrade model we've been seeing by all major developers, Sony studios as well, for the last several years.
Would really dig hearing some news about moooooooooore interiooooooors in this super duper, ultimate, and insanely awesome PS5 version of GTA5. 4K, 60fps, RT, and probably Bahama Mamas West still closed and not used. Unlike the long wait for the Casino to open the BMW interior is in the original 2013 GTA5 file.
I’m sorry but I was bored of this game nearly a decade ago.
Does it feature GTA 6?
I just wanted a "purge mode" for gta v. The entire populace, rioting, with weapons was allowed with codes on the older games, but not iv or v.
Also, maybe a futuristic city for the next one. An accessible space station/port, interplanetary travel. I know, I'm in the minority here, but after v, another sunsoaked city with a night life just doesn't do it for me.
PSA: "Upscaled to 4K" is probably "1080p"
Why can't an ancient PS3 game do 4K + 60fps?
@KundaliniRising333 but.. the article says that GTA5 is getting a performance RT mode, so why are you asking why it can't?
And yeah you're right, ray tracing at 60fps is in fact possible on PS5 (as demonstrated by Insomniac's PS5 outings), but there are sacrifices to be made to get there. Firstly, the performance RT mode in the Spiderman games lowers the number of NPC's (as in the random pedestrians wandering around), and doesn't use as intensive ray tracing settings as the full on "graphics mode" (think it might be called "fidelity mode" but I forget). Ray Tracing isn't as simple as "On" or "Off", there are various different things it can do, and not all games make use of all of them, or to the same extent.
I do completely agree though that GTA5 doesn't need Ray Tracing nor will it particularly benefit from it - but that's not going to stop Rockstar from putting it in just to say "it's got Ray Tracing now". It's not for the people who know what Ray Tracing actually is - it's for the people who are the gaming equivalent of the people who buy "audiophile" headphones
GTA 5 about to come back into the Top 10 with a vengeance this month.
3rd or 4th time people are buying the same game.
Music to a shareholder's ears
Could never be bothered with waiting 5 minutes to load into online, it always took forever.
@frankmcma probably due to enhanced PS4 version graphics not PS3.
Performance RT should be in more games if possible.
RDR2 next please.
Absolute yawn fest. But people are still buying it soo. To be honest I shouldn't really care, I don't have to buy it, but I don't wanna see their stupid character faces anymore. Is it logical. No. Are there more important things. Yes. Still.. I canny help it.
@Phelaidar I dont need it to be free but when its released 3 times then it should have a upgrade path or atleast have a massive discount.
@Wolfie_Pie Sounds awsome i really want to have a PS5 but with gasoline at €2,39 a liter and gas 200% more expensive.... ☹️
All I wanted was 60ps at 1080p on ps4 pro but nope wanted to resell it on ps5 👎🏻
£24.99 I betcha.
@Texan_Survivor Not even a RTX 2080 equipped pc can hit 4k and 60FPS without massive dips in GTAV. A PC like that is still a bit stronger than a PS5, and that's without the enhancements promised.
Also the thing about older games... There not always a guarantee they're gonna run better on newer hardware. Depending on the game or engine, it not gonna take advantage of the massive CPU core count, or any other features that the GPU offers to get good performance. Alot of the time it up to the hardware to brute force good performance.
The only thing that would make me give GTA V another go at this point is PSVR2 compatabilty, otherwise lets just move on...havent TK2 sold enough copies?
@frankmcma "Fidelity Mode is tuned for the highest visual quality and targets 30 FPS. In this mode the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X support native 4K resolution with ray tracing enabled, while the Xbox Series S supports upscaled 4K resolution. Performance Mode is tuned for the most responsive gameplay experience and targets 60 FPS. In this mode the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X support upscaled 4K resolution while the Xbox Series S supports a resolution of 1080p."
I agree, it is weird not to have native 4K/60 even with medium-quality details. The developers should consider adding a third resolution mode to PS5 games. On the other hand, upscaled performance mode is probably close to native 4K. You won't notice much difference, but it will keep high-quality details. More likely, they will use 1440p or 1800p.
I'm guessing this will be $60 at launch (I don't recall them announcing a price yet technically), so if that is the case, I will wait. An upgrade path would be nice, but I doubt it since it didn't have one last gen. I will probably end up getting it at some point though as I've never played it on PlayStation. I own it on Xbox, but I would like to play it on PlayStation since that is my main platform now. I know it may end up costing me more money in the end whenever I do get it, but I might as well play it in the best way possible on consoles.
As for the visual modes, I get that it's an old game, but I still appreciate the fact that they are offering those options. Not enough games regardless of age offer them like an Insomniac game.
Upscaled last (last) gen and PS5. Name a more iconic duo 🤣
I won't be paying a lot of money for this. Hopefully, they'll do a 120hz@40FPS mode but I'm not going to hold my breath!
Milking the cash cow too the max
If only they fixed that awful auto-correct camera....
Mugs will pay 60 beans for this and then ask why GTA6 hasn't come out yet
This will sell millions of units unfortunately.
If you assume everyone already owns this game, re-buying on PS5 isn't worth it.
You can get Elden Ring at Wal-Mart for $49, that's new and potential GotY material.
