Look, we all know what this is going to entail. We've all been here before, and every time, it's the same. Alright, fine, maybe not every time, but most times. PlayStation 5's latest firmware update is ready and available to download right now, and you already know what it does. You've probably already got the words lined up in your mind.
PS5's latest firmware update — version 21.02-04.51.00, if you want to get real nerdy about it — has everyone's favourite patch note:
"This system software update improves system performance."
That's your lot. After using 914MB of your data allowance, your PS5's system performance will be immeasurably better, and we mean that in the literal sense. You can't measure what difference this patch makes. Still, it's worth downloading and installing it all the same.
So, yes, that's that. This author learned of this news shortly after defeating Margit, the Fell Omen using nothing but the basic magic attack his Elden Ring character came with. Felt pretty good. Yeah, we squeezed Elden Ring into this story, and you can't do anything about it.
You know what? Here's what we want you to do. If you're planning on commenting on this article, please do so in the style of an Elden Ring or Souls-esque message. "Didn't expect stability..." for example. Go on, it'll be a laugh.

Try stability, but hole.
These "stability" updates probably always add something in the background, but Sony doesn't enable them until a later date.
The screenshot upload to PS App probably came in one of those without any alarm.
Stability ahead!
The big one most likely won’t arrive until April then. Still hoping for VRR.
O, Stability! O, Stability!
Why is it always stability?
Try finger...then stability.
Visions of stability
Praise the stability!
Hopefully this includes not continually downloading the PS4 version of a game unnecessarily! That’s all I want at the moment!

Improves poise...but watch out for a red square debuff.

Nice, but can it run Elden Ring?
@ED_209 still waiting fotr it in the UK. Checked again yesterday.
O' Fingers of Stability thou hast appeared
The real stability starts here!
Ooh, what's that smell... The sweet stability, ooh, it sings to me! It's enough to make a man hollow.
I’m on the beta firmware and haven’t got an update to say there is a newer official firmware yet.
Liar ahead
VRR, oh dear VRR
@Kidfunkadelic83 in the UK. Updating now.
King of performance
Stability Keeper
@Palleon awsome. Thanks mate 👍
Coming at ya from 2009
The real Stability starts now!
@Palleon just checked my app and there was no pending update. Cant see where to view them either. Maybe it requires the system update? 🤷♂️
@Kidfunkadelic83 go to settings, system and updates, then it says firmware ready to update.
I thought this would of been the update that's in beta.
If you stand tall by a wall,
You will never stumble or fall,
Because the wall has an ability
Known as stabilty!
@Palleon think our wires are crossed mate. I know there is a system update but i was on about viewing my pictures on the app mate. Not available in the UK at the moment.
453rd death of the day... Loading stability...
But what about stability, I miss the good old day of ps4 stability..
We all meme the stability updates, but ever since we've started getting updates my PS5 never crashes.
And I remember games crashing quite a bit back on, and around, launch day.
Stable foe ahead!
A bunch of magically thrown pebbles vs Margit The Fell Omen. Poor guy didn’t stand a chance.
No one expects Sony stalibity inquisition!
Behold, stability!
aw man , where is the damn web browser ???
Come on Sony, it's a shame to keep postponing VRR support
And the timing would be perfect now, as Elden Ring cries to be played using VRR.
Stability ahead, therefore praise Mark Cerny.
@BeerIsAwesome What do you mean?
Ahh secret…,
Could this be a abundance?
No clue ahead
but Let there be bliss
@XinGViruS
Ouch very scary! I had this two days ago after trying to restart the game following HFW bugs.
Sounds like I went through the same steps - its hard to know what's going on, and its a little worrying waiting to see if it will boot!
Mine was before this FW update though, so I don't think its related to the FW, just bad luck that you got this directly after the update. I'll certainly hope thats the case anyway!
Didn't get the Souls reference at the end but loved everything else about this article.
After almost a year of PS5 ownership (and pretty heavy usage) I'm pretty sure that my console has only crashed once, and that's probably more to do with the 'newness' of the game than anything. Currently it's running beta software and apart from the notification when firing up it does everything it should. There's plenty of updates in the pipeline. Hopefully soon one will add VRR and one of these articles may actually say something different...
The only issue I've had that may or may not be blamed on system software is the thing shutting down when my TV went to standby, but that was a simple virtual switch to get rid of that annoyance (can't remember whether it was on the console or the TV)... Now if only Sony updated their TV's with some system stability updates...

Thank you for your senseless contribution, did it make you feel big inside?
The article tells it how it is, is well written and is fun too.
Every single person reading your post will know without a doubt, that you are the loser.

lol. 10 yo confirmed...
Nothing to see here
A very quick reminder to simply report any egregious comments or posts rather than engage them
Please continue the Souls comments, they are the best.
Two Fingers of Stability ahead, proceed with caution.
I used to be an updater like you, then I took an arrow in the ssd. (Okay, I'll buy Elden Ring today finally, and leave Skyrim behind 🙂)
Why is it always stability?
Eating food in stability.
I am not a stable person.......... I need all the stability I can get LOL
Stability FTW!!
stable turtle
My PS5 really needed the boost in performance, was starting to get exhausted .
Praise the sun
