Can you play Roblox on PS5 and PS4? Not right now, but if a new job listing is anything to go by, it seems it's only a matter of time.
Roblox is an enormously popular game-making sandbox on PC and mobile. Aimed primarily at a younger audience, the free-to-play game provides players the opportunity to create their own game worlds and experiences, albeit with rather basic assets and incredibly blocky characters. It attracts huge numbers of users every day, and the company is estimated to be worth approximately $38 billion. Despite the huge audience, Roblox has yet to properly branch out to consoles.
As reported by The Verge, this job listing on the Roblox website explicitly calls for a PlayStation software engineer. "As a Gaming Console Software Engineer, you'll help build and support our engine used by millions of users worldwide for the Sony PlayStation platform, and other leading gaming consoles on the market," reads the description. The PS4 is brought up specifically further down the job spec, which makes sense given the machine's huge install base (and PS5's backward compatibility).
Of course, this isn't any sort of confirmation that a PlayStation version of Roblox is definitely on the way, but, well, you don't hire someone specialising in the platform otherwise, right? The studio's CEO, Dave Baszucki, has gone on record saying console versions "make perfect sense", so we imagine we'll be seeing the sandbox on PS5 and PS4 in the not-too-distant future.

Hurray for child labour I guess...
My stepson is gonna be happy
Damn, misses will want my PlayStation consoles to create new characters and have them running all day for that Adopt Me game.
She'll sit with 2 phones, a tablet a laptop and now my PS for most of the day. Taking up a lot electricity.
Worst news of the day.
@lolwhatno There's some pretty shady stuff around Roblox, was quite happy it was being kept away from PS platforms so far. People Make Games have done 2 excellent videos on the subject, and there's various articles covering the same points if you dig a little bit. Unfortunately it's something that's often overlooked
@lolwhatno There's a lot to it, so I'd recommend either watching those docs or reading up on it. The gist of it is it doesn't happen directly on the platform, kids are recruited externally through Discord groups etc, so Roblox washes its hands off. There's multiple issues with that, recruiters profit directly from that and since nothing is official (contracts etc), they can be let go after months of work with nothing to show.
That's just one aspect of it, but it has other repercussions, The way creators and the in game economy works (basically scrip), means Roblox makes huge profits from every transaction, so while they say they provide a safe environment, they stop just short of enforcing anything of significance since it will hurt their pocket in the end.
Definitely worth looking into at the very least, there's a lot more to it, and I'm not as eloquent as actual journalists that have covered the subject!
@lolwhatno I believe it's because children make their own games on Roblox and Roblox then profit off them some how? I think? I may be wrong though.
@tomassi I'm honestly not trying to troll because I genuinely don't know, but what makes that any different than, say, Dreams or LittleBigPlanet? Other than microtransactions?
NO.
I prefer playing Portal Knights over than Roblox and Minecraft.
I don't even like Roblox and Minecraft in the slightest.
That's going to be a hard pass.
@PapaGlitch Nah, that's a fair question to ask tbh. Can't say I know too much about the in game economies of Dreams or LBP, but I don't believe you can cash out, or monetise your creations in those games. Roblox is marketed directly at children, and makes a point of "you can make money" from this. You can directly sell your creations and Roblox earns a very significant chunk of it at every step of the process
That's not to say I agree completely with the games you brought up, there's issues there for sure in the grand scheme of things, although maybe a bit more indirectly? All that Dreams can do is sell more copies of the game, and yes, if there's a big community making creations in it, that collectively helps them, but it doesn't incentivise work for profit I guess? Definitely worth a discussion though.
@DrClayman Ah I see, I didn't realise that they make a point of suggesting players can actually make money from the game. Yeah, that is pretty scummy then, and is at odds with what LBP and Dreams do, which is much more in the spirit of just a big playground to make things and share with other users. I'm pretty sure there are no suggestions of monetising creations at all in those games, either on the part of the players or the game itself
@DrClayman yeh BBC news had a article about it being full of pedos and perverts
Here's the article if anyone wants it
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-60314572
@Martsmall yup, exactly, whoooooole other can of worms there.
I am the only one that has never heard of Roblox before?
the article says consoles Roblox is already on xbox
@belmont Roblox is what Fortnite wants to be. It's not a "game", it's a "metaverse", and has Apple's backing that it's not a "game".
@PapaGlitch I have no idea to be honest. Can't see much difference myself personally either!
Oh joy, yet another mindless children's game...I will never play this or Minecraft...
Roblox is a very, very unethical company and PlayStation would be better off without it.
I mean, probably not financially, since they'll make a bucket load of cash being the middle man.
