There’s a lot to like about the PS Store and the improvements Sony’s made to its infrastructure, but age-old issues continue to rear their ugly head. While this month’s addition of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was supposed to be a sweetener for subscribers, it’s proving to be anything but for a handful of fans looking to upgrade their PS4 version of Jin Sakai’s debut to the PS5 Director’s Cut.
Admittedly, this is quite a niche issue and is unlikely to affect everyone, but it’s something worth keeping in mind. So, here’s the situation: if you own Ghost of Tsushima on the PS4 but haven’t upgraded to the Director’s Cut on PS5 yet, do not claim the PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends currently available for PS Plus subscribers.
The problem is as follows: despite Ghost of Tsushima: Legends being a standalone version of the game’s multiplayer mode, the PS Store classifies it as part of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut. Therefore, if you claim Legends with your PS Plus subscription and then later decide to upgrade the main game from PS4 to PS5, you’ll be blocked from the upgrade fee.
Sony will, unsurprisingly, still let you buy Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut at full-price for PS5, but you won’t be eligible for the discounted fee. The only solution is to contact Sony customer support and get the PS Plus version you claimed “refunded” so that you can then go ahead and purchase the PS4 to PS5 upgrade. Yes, it’s a complete and utter mess, but it’s not the first time an issue like this has occurred sadly.
It’s possible PlayStation may now be aware of the problem and will fix it, but if you’re planning to upgrade to the Director’s Cut at any point, do not claim Ghost of Tsushima: Legends with PS Plus – it’s more hassle than it’s worth, it seems.

Never change, Sony!
I love PlayStation, I really do. However, more often than not lately I’m finding it so hard to defend them.
Unsmart Delivery, I love it
Oh wow I just checked and confirmed this is true. Yet another blunder on their storefront.
It's one of those things that you have to ask, why does it still happen?
I can't see PlayStation not being my preferred platform anytime soon, but... Why does this happen???
To be fair to them, if you contact them about stuff like this they're usually pretty understanding. At least in the EU they are anyway.
I was upgrading something a few months ago. I can't remember what, but a direct upgrade option wasn't there, and I had to go through the process of buying it for €0.00 in order to get it.
It was only after I downloaded the PS5 version that I realised I had been charged full price.
No idea how it happened, but I contacted support and explained it all to them.
They refunded me right away.
I think they've got better with stuff like this, but yeah, it's irritating that it's still a recurring problem — even in admittedly niche situations like this.
Just shouldn't happen.
This seem to happen quiet often. You would think at this point they would have learned to avoid it. But nope.
The way PS Store purchases group together certain items and block you from purchasing some has always been needlessly opaque and stupid.
@get2sammyb No, seriously. Change. Please. Yesterday.
Ghost Of Tshambles!
Sony are doing a lot right, absolutely nailing the new gen IMO, but?....
They do like to complicate matters every once in a while.
Same for me uff.
Had the plan to upgrade to the DC cut sometime.
Hopefully Sony will fix this.
When Xbox announced its initiative to allow you to play the best version on the most powerful Xbox, I thought it sounded ridiculous. Why would they be using what should be a standard feature in the marketing? Then Sony should us how not to do it!
Great, so I'm screwed then.
Already added to my library when it dropped so now I can't get the Directors Cut (which I was planning to do) without paying full price. Unless I contact support, great. 🙄
I'm sure it will be fixed, but it's still pretty ridiculous that these things keep happening.
I guess they just don't have the same talent pool as Microsoft who are involved in numerous frontend and backend solutions for business users. Not sure how the storefront worked across various consoles for Nintendo as I only got a switch quite late into the gen. Smart delivery (awesome btw) is arguably business as usual for a company that does as many front end and backend solutions as Microsoft does. Just conjecture on my end ofc. I'm not a specialist at this stuff.
I had an issue recently with the PS Store showing I owned Sonic Team Racing because I have the game available to me through PS Now. I contacted customer service because I couldn't redeem the PS+ version. However, they directed me to the website and the PS+ version showed up as a separate version of the game I could claim. Sony is able to differentiate between different versions, but because they, bafflingly, don't include that functionality on their app or the console itself, you'd never know it. That's just something related this article reminded me of.
Pfftt some things never change I suppose.
I'm a victim. Problem is, the $30 price tag was already so egregious to me I hadn't upgraded. I see people talk about how $10 for Uncharted or Death Stranding is unnecessary penny-pinching, but if feel that $30 price for GOT is actually a problem. I think it's calculated as $20 for Iki island and $10 for PS5 version, but why not just make it $20 to be competitive? So now I'm in the position where I have to wonder, is it worth spending time getting the license refunded so I can not buy the upgrade for $30, hoping it will somehow get discounted in the future, or do I hold on to the PS5 version of the multiplayer, and miss out on a cheaper upgrade? Lame!
Smart Delivery was a genius idea from MS quite frankly.
@Rural-Bandit
Total agree love songs exclusives but Microsoft do everything else better, how hard is it do have songs own smart delivery?.
@CynicalGamer I've worked with Microsoft. Most of that backend is handled by contractors.
@MattBoothDev thanks for the info. Always assumed they had a massive internal team that handled that.
im guessing its a bug
This happened to me. I had to call PlayStation's customer support so I could get a refund so I could still purchase the upgrade path for PS5. That was kind of annoying.
@Shepherd_Tallon I'd normally say the same but apparently they just tell you to refund the free Tsushima Legends so you can profit from the discount and can't do anything else for you. Unless they've changed it since yesterday.
How about the good news that everyone who doesn't already own the game can buy the director's cut for $20 cheaper after claiming the free Legends.
It's as though Sony hired Nintendo to run their online infrastructure.
Theres also the fact that I was actually playing a lot of legends on the ps4 just to get a feel for it, did all the story missions, gear and stuff, then I went to transfer it to the ps5, turns out you can't do that without the full game, and thats just BS.
I think the store has had a massive brain fart in general. Tried to get Cyberpunk 2077 onto my PS5 today but my library only shows that I own the digital PS4 version. There's no option whatsoever for the PS5 version unless I pay £39.99 for it.
I read that adding it to my cart would show it at £0.00 but it still tries to charge my card £39.99 at check-out. Dumb delivery.
@NEStalgia haha yeah, I’ve never owned any Nintendo console personally but I tried to sort an issue with my Nephew’s Switch recently and man was it a terribly awful experience I hope never to repeat.
@BritneyfR_ee to be fair to Nintendo, their systems are both obsolete and draconian, but they're not actually as convoluted as Sonys. The answer to "can I do this?" Is always just "no", while Sony's is "as long as you do it in the right sequence, on the first try".....
I couldn't claim it though , it says download trial
I think they are hoping they can tough it out until they can focus solely on PS5 games and they won’t have to worry about it again until the PS6.
A great game that I would love to play again on PS5 but I refuse to pay to upgrade anyway so doesn't matter to me.
@NEStalgia To be totally fair to the Nintendo fanbase, you don't have time to want a better online service, app, online system communications, or any of that nonsense when you are so busy
playing so many great gamesasking for folders.@Richnj HAHA...hah....ha.....
....
...
OMG Sony really DID hire Nintendo to design their system, didn't they?!??
I did a licence restore and now I can buy for the 30$ / 24.99 GBP price the PS5 + DC upgrade. I wrote before the support but nothing happened and after I did a licence restore I can buy the upgrade. Separately. I hope it helps.
How much is it supposed to be? Was never free or even £10 wasnt it £25?
@MattBoothDev if thats true why is sony not hiring them??
Smart delivery has been there since day one.
Its honestly sonys fault at this point they have had plenty of time to do there own version of smart delivery. All i can think of is that sony want people to make mistakes and purchase 2 versions of the same game or pay full whack for upgrades. Another story of sony being greedy and ignorant.
@Gh05tm4ch1n3 they might be? Who knows. I don't know why you're replying to my post mentioning Sony like it stole your girl... I was just saying that all lot of Microsoft backend is handled by contractors. I.E. for a LONG time Azure was handled by a team in Germany, all contractors, who were eventually bought into Microsoft and amalgamated.
I mean, it's hardly relevant info, but I had to mention it.
Edit:
But yes, Smart Delivery is a good feature. Sony's upgrade paths feel very unpolished in comparison.
Unforgivable. It concerns me too as I wanted to upgrade to PS5 version sometime later. So it seems Sony won't see me paying that PS5 price extra. Their fault, saved money for me. I don't like paying for something screwed so I don't buy it.
The same problem is with GreedFall - if you claimed PS Plus version, you cannot buy a DLC for it. The solution was easy enough for me. Kept my money in my pocket and never touched GreedFall again.
Another issue is with FF7. If you redeemed the ps4 disc upgrade to ps5, you cant get the digital ps5 version after getting the ps plus version(they recently allowed ps plus versions to be upgradeable for free).
Not as major as the article's issue...but still shows something is wrong with their online store.
@zhoont same here. I was wondering why the ps5 upgrade would not show up in the ps store. Now I know the hard way.I was thinking of selling my ps4 standard version and purchasing a copy of the PS5 Directors Cut . It would be less expensive. Also allows me to resell the ps5 version if I want to. 29.99 is outrageous for an upgrade. I might wait and hope by holiday 2022 it will drop in price.
Quick update: tried 3 times on 3 separate days to contact Sony support and get the PS5 multiplayer version refunded like mentioned above in this article. They've closed the chat on me every time without explanation when I explain the problem. Can't get an answer from the support twitter account either. ***** show.
If you have problems upgrading on PS4 to DC after claiming legends from PS plus, just use other account on your PS and buy it there and that will work also for original account which claimed legends.
