Sony, like many major companies, is making an effort to reduce the environmental impact of its products. Now, in the aftermath of this year’s Earth Day, the organisation has provided an update on its progress. As you’d expect, the firm has a long way to go in order to achieve its goal of having a zero environmental footprint by 2050, but it’s taking the right steps to get there.
According to a new SIE corporate blog post, the PlayStation division offset carbon emissions equivalent to 100 million hours of average console electricity use during gameplay in 2021. This is through energy efficiency improvements that it’s built into the PS5 and PS4, including more efficient chipsets and low-power Rest Modes – positive change, then!
Of course, it’s not all the company is doing. You may recall with the launch of Horizon Forbidden West that the firm used the game to raise awareness about climate change, and “invested in planting more than a half million trees with selected partners and organisations”. If you remember, the company embarked on a reforestation effort in Wisconsin, pledging a tree in real-life for each player who reached the Daunt in-game.
There’s other important things the organisation has been doing. As it prepares to launch PS Plus Premium with cloud streaming, it’s been working with its data centres to help them transition to renewable energy where possible. Since 2020, around 78 per cent of the electricity used to stream PlayStation games with PS Now has come from renewable sources. Meanwhile, the firm’s head offices in Europe and the US already use 100 per cent renewable energy, while its Japanese headquarters will follow their lead later this year.
And, beginning last year, the company has started to use recyclable plastic in its game boxes, with roughly 10 per cent of its plastic sourced from post-industrial waste. You can read more about what PlayStation’s been doing through here, but the message is clear throughout: great progress with plenty more work to do.

The world needs to go green 💚
The greener the better. Some good steps taken, but definitely a long way to go.
Trees are good
Trees are good
E’s Ebetreezer goode
Great job Sony, now show us some new games
@nessisonett they're good for making Veras
Nice to see progress at least, as well as commitment to ongoing improvement. I try to support more ecologically sound companies, so to see a large corp like sony making progress is a positive step in the right direction 👋
Good I guess. Every little bit helps but it won't be enough if China and India don't jump in. How do you convince the CCP they need trees in order to breath?
My neighbour is a good guy....he doe's not see anything wrong in loading his car up with recyclables and driving half a mile to the nearest recycling bin.......as you were soldier 🚗
Love Sony, this is a corporation that understands for them to be able to survive and profit, we all need a planet that's inhabitable. Good on them!
Next step, stop making consoles and electronic devices!
@BeerIsAwesome I have 2 PS5s lol.
What's earth day?
@BeerIsAwesome come off it you can get one if you really want one it's not difficult now at all
People keep planting trees but plankton does a way better job of sequestering carbon, not sure how to better help plankton though.
Might help of the PS5 didnt push 350wph usage. Just sayin.
I did not know that about Wisconsin tree donation. That's great. Right in my home state.
Nice about the trees well done ,but to be honest who ever thought the ps5 shouldn't play BC disc titles weren't thinking about the planet then ,all them old title discs then could have been reused instead on ending in landfills , as the Tesco ad says every little helps
I'll be honest, with no virtue signalling.
I don't care about any of this.
@Scob fascinating. Please tells us more.
@Number09 as opposed to what? Staying home, opening up your windows and throwing them all out in the yard? Burning and emitting harmful toxins into the atmosphere that way?
Not following your attempted jab here.
Either way the new corporate slogan "net zero by 2050," is a total shame and actually far more harmful to the environment than taking any measure of reduction steps now. Just some fine print for you on that slogan.
What it means and what they mean is: we have no plan to reduce emissions now or in the near future, however by 2050 we plan to just stop, right at the end. In the meantime, we will continue to emit as normal if not more until that stopping point, then we will figure it out then. Oh ... and most likely when that time does come around, we will just punt responsibility back a few decades again. Just like we have for the last two decades.
I don’t think it’s possible for people to destroy the planet , it’s too humongous and the earth heals itself . even the most artificial compounds come from the planet in some way . i read a credible article a while ago stating that the entire world population could fit into central park NY , so yeah , we’re small fry
Perfect, we need more trees. Lumber prices have been out of control.
@nomither6 I forget the exact figure presented, but its suggested humans account for something like less than 2% of CO2 emissions.
@nomither6 To paraphrase George Carlin, the planet will be fine, but the people are screwed. Also, I think the average human takes up 2.5 sq ft of space when packed in a crowd, so 7.5 bn x 2.5 sqft = 673 square miles. That’s a big park.
"Greatness from small beginnings"
@nessisonett Awesome
@KundaliniRising333 No attempted jab here.
I am not sure if there is a mix up in translation....but it is well known that Local councils (And I have had this confirmed from a Chief Council Employee) in my area do exactly as you said in "Burning and emitting harmful toxins into the atmosphere"....they make no bones about that...........The point about my Neighbor using Petrol to make him feel he is making a difference is bordering on madness......lets start with recycling Bottles first you gotta clean them (water) then when the recycle'rs get them they (Water)clean them....Plasticks we have sort of covered them....metal needs cleaning same process Cardboard needs Petrol to transport to the recycling plant God knows where the food waste goes......Get out of your cars and as you walk the dog take some plastic bottles used cans and cardboard with you (whats that I hear you say "it's too bulky") plastics you get a pair of scissors and take the top off (there are charity organisations that will take bottle top's off you) and cut the top off and the rest into strips same with cardboard cans stamp on em crush them pesky scamps put them all into a bag and walk the dog.
Solving this crises is not about staying at home and letting the bin men and recycle van sort it we all individually have a responsibility make supermarkets Bottle milk bottle soda make super markets display fresh fruit and veg where you can freely pick your own instead of plastic covered cucumbers if you wand a pound of carrots pick em and put em in a brown paper bag there are things that will need plastic but my God these Super markets are gonna need to pull their finger out to....anyway nuff ramblin from me begging to sound like a Hippy....much prefer Groovy.
Aloy and Astro would be happy.
@nomither6 That's not true. All the people in the world can fit into central park? Where did you read this? New York City... yes. But Central Park, no.
@stridernyc The Washington Post - https://washingtonpost.com//news/wonk/wp/2015/04/02/the-entire-world-fits-in-new-york-city/
@nessisonett That put a proper smile on my face.
May have to dig out my old CD player and Rave '92... or could just use Spotify, but there's something magical about the physical thing, CD sleeves and anachronistic design and art.
@themightyant you could just clik on utbe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b2T8K2D-ps
The caped man legendary comedian Jerry Sadowitz.
This is great progress, more power to you Sony!
@nomither6 Yes, that says New York City. Not Central Park. I go to Central Park quite often so I knew that couldn't be possible lol.
