Update: Sony has promptly solved problems with the PS Vita’s PS Store, which worryingly suggested that content was “no longer for sale”. As of the time of reporting, service has been resumed, and is operating as intended again.
Original Story: PS Vita’s built-in PS Store is busted, and there’s been no word from Sony about why. The manufacturer had planned to shut down the storefront before making a dramatic U-turn last year. However, countless reports online – corroborated by our own console – suggest something has gone wrong, as the system is spitting out the error code NP-8099-6. Perhaps most concerning of all, the message reads: “This content may not yet be for sale or is no longer for sale.”
You can still access your Download List, and various other parts of the PS Store are still working, although it’s clear something is broken here. We don’t think Sony would close the client without prior communication, especially after the backlash last year – although we also didn’t expect it to block PS Plus subscriptions from being redeemed, but look where we are.
We’ve contacted the company, and will update if we receive comment. In the meantime, cross your fingers this is just a glitch that will rectify itself quick.

@Uncharted2007
This state of neglect is unacceptable.
Either shut the store down officially or support it properly.
Thankfully the modding community loves the Vita more than Sony ever did. 😉
@Uncharted2007 what a ridiculous comment, best handheld there has been just poorly supported by Sony, as with many other mine still gets used daily.
I've already backed up all my Vita games to hdd so I'll be fine (read: emotionally devastated) when the Vita store finally shuts down, but I hope this isn't the end of the Vita store already!
That's my opinion on it. Sony lied to early adopters as to what the handheld was going to be showcasing it as the next gen PSP successor with great AAA support. Instead they stopped support after two years using it as a cell phone game shovel-ware device with jrpg ports. No... I'm sticking with it being the worst Playstation in the history of the brand.
@Uncharted2007
Hey! Hey! Those JRPG ports were wonderful!😄
@Korgon Not if you don't like jrpgs.
Should really pick up the remaining Vita games I want this store has been unstable for so long
@Uncharted2007 There’s plenty great games on the Vita. It’s also a fantastic emulation device. For a handheld it’s not bad at all, even compared to the 3DS which is probably my favourite console of all time.
It's sad that Sony killed the Vita. It was a powerful little beast.
I never owned a Vita and I'm still annoyed by how Sony treats it.
was the vita better than the PSP though ?
@RBMango What amazing logic. If people like you bought it maybe they would have kept making games for it. Why do you care about a device you didn't even bother supporting?
Also who's buying games on a Vita in 2022 anyway? Talk about making something out of nothing. They already told you that the end was near.
@nomither6 Hardware wise, yes. Software wise... not even close.
@mucc
I just bought about 50 dollars worth of games this week on it, some ps1/psp titles and the vita copy of Ragnarok Oddessy Ace.
Just because YOU arent using it, doesn't mean its not being used
Sony really need to stop messing with the Vita store. I fully suspect this is a result of playing about with the PS One classics in readiness for the PS Plus launch and it will be back soon, but it continues to be very annoying how the system continues to be treated.
For anyone interested, YouTuber 2old4gaming has just written a fantastic book on the life of the PS Vita. It was originally kickstarted but is now available on his Etsy store and gives a full deep dive into loads of the games released for the platform, as well as including interviews with some of those involved in developing for the system over the years. There is a particularly great interview with Shahid Ahmad who worked at Sony at the time, and was behind the indie push on the system. Really helps to understand what was going on within Sony at the time when it came to the system.
Fully recommend the book to anyone who is or was a fan of the vita, and at over 400 pages is quite a read!

@PlayStationGamer3919 What Playstation has a worse library than the PSV?
I liked the Vita, my Switch Lite has replaced it these days though. Was happy to see Tempest 4000 show up on Switch, as I did like TxK.
I loved my Vita (have 2 OLED models, one in reserve just in case) but I dont play on it much these days.
Sony killed the Vita DoA with the insane highly priced memory cards. Just....wtf were they thinking. And never backing down from that either, just....crazy.
If you want to play all these vita games, psp games, PlayStation games, on a PlayStation console…get yourself a PlayStation mini.
Modding my VITA was one of the best gaming decisions I made! Since Sony never cared about the console anyway...
Yeah, none of the cross buy stuff is showing on psprices, probably kaput but soon to be fixed
Well if they kill off legit ways to buy vita games it's open season for hackers. The day they close the store is the day I finally mod my vita-TV ! I have never felt the need until recently when Sony decided that my entire PS1 PS2 PS3 PSP/ Vita collection will be stranded on aging hardware and will never work on future PlayStations, not to mention the countless digital legacy games forever lost to history with the coming store closures.
looks at fat stack of physical Vita games
Mmmh, not like I am ever going to sell most of them, but... good stuff. Think I have everything I need apart from Yomawari Night Alone, which I never did buy. Maybe the Euro version of Persona 4 Golden as well, for some reason the copy I bought in the UK is for the US (separate Trophy lists, so worth owning both). If Sony is going to stick the knife in, then at least give us one more period of respite to finish up buying everything.
The modding community has done an incredible job on the Vita. I can play the entire PSP library with better controls, better screen and a few games have enhanced graphics. That's just a drop in the bucket of what the Vita is capable of!
One problem with a other with the Ps Store on Vita; absolutely unacceptable. So annoyed with Sony constantly not giving a flying tuppence about the handheld
I've been trying to add £5 to my PSN in order to buy Suikoden but it's refused to let me for the last few days. Very annoying.
Sony should make ps5 BC with psvita and sells the games on ps5 store. Just add resolutions and framerate upgrade like xbox bc (and patch out the games touchscreen requiment).
I feel like its more of a glitch than anything else.
I literally downloaded games on my VITA two days ago.
I continued to do so and I got a content isnt avaliable from late last night (the moment you click on the store)
Saying that the Vitas power blocks are shocking. Ive had two break on me somehow (I actually thought the battery was busted as it wasnt charging)
Luckly some generic USB plug worked fine for me (despite reading that people had issues)
My issues that some games arent even installing bringing up error codes (firmware is up-to-date)
Some rectified themselves on rebooting the machine (crypt of the necrodancer) but others didnt (I lost track what didnt install)
I just wish they'd have one last mega sale for its games and bring some of the dlc back to the store!
I got money to spend but I ain't paying full price on a 8+ year old game like a Nintendo fanboy.
@RawnDawn the last Vita "sale" is ongoing until the store shuts down. All Sometimes You games were dropped to $1. Sony doesn't allow sales on Vita anymore, so the publisher changed the base price of all their games. I don't think publishers are even allowed to change Vita game's base prices anymore either, so this is it.
Such a sad state of the best Playstation ever released.
It's not Vita's fault that Sony didn't support their own platform. It was a great machine that flashed brilliantly, briefly, before Sony decided it was a PS4 accessory.
It's the one thing I'll never forgive Tretton for.
@Robinsad I literally just got a new 2000 last week and have been playing tons of Terraria as well as The Minish Cap for GBA. Greatest handheld ever made.
Loved my Vita but Better handheld option out there. We have finally taken a real step forward.
Let it die - Put all the games on Steam and PS5.
@Burntbreadman any mobile phone compatible micro-USB charger will do for the Vita Slim (original one had that weird proprietary connection)
@NEStalgia Funny you mention Tretton:
https://www.psu.com/news/jack-tretton-wishes-sony-had-supported-the-ps-vita-better/
The Vita never fully hit its stride - from Sony abandoning it so early to focus on PS4 to the later weak DS and Smartphone ports.
One main weakness I'm convinced was the lack of an add-on UMD drive as PSP owners had no easy way of upgrading.
To be honest, I still miss the PSP - the finest gaming on the go handheld, despite the units that the DS managed to shift. The original Lego games were like having a handheld PS2!
@Uncharted2007 I still use mine daily for games and watching prOn
The Vita had so much potential and Nintendo have proven that with the right games there is still a market for handhelds.
I have two Vita's and a VitaTV. One is on OFW, one is on CFW for PSX, PSP, GB/A N64, SNES emulation.
And the Vita TV is for all of that on.. well the TV. Plus autopluginII has an HD upscale filter for Persona4 Golden. And I can play my favourite PSX and PSP games that Sony neglected to port over. MG Acid was sadly overlooked.
@sanderson72 Now I miss Tretton even more! That was my only complaint about his tenure. (Short of PS3 launch, but that was all Kutaragi.)
The Vita was supposed to have a UMD conversion drive or physical to digital conversion process originally. It was still promised when it launched. They abandoned that after people bought it and waited for their games to transfer. Another slap in the Vita early adopter's faces.
PSP was amazing, short of the finger shredding monostick. Such fond memories of that machine as well. Heck, I even held a PSP Go! in my hands, though I never paid money for one. I'd honestly still buy one if they made them today vs. phones.
Haven't been able to use the psp store for ages
@Uncharted2007 The PSP Go. You can't even access its library anymore. (Legally anyway).
@Milktastrophe That's a huge shame, guess I'll have to mod my vita
@Uncharted2007 that sounds like it had the worst support of any PlayStation console. That's different from the hardware itself being horrible, or "the worst".
@twztid13 I refer you to post #17 replying to #15 and #21 replying to #20 above.
Also, support directly affects how "good" a system is. Hardware gives it potential. Software makes the system incredible or severely lacking.
We have always known the support for it would have been best effort and not an actual maintained thing.
Those things are gonna happen and are going to get fixed, just not instantly.
Been playing Uncharted Golden Abyss on my Vita. I do t think Sony will support it much longer though, Jim Ryan seems to have the Vita’s number, he doesn’t think it means for life unfortunately the git.
@NEStalgia Sony went to great lengths to try and turn the Vita into effectively the PS4’s little bitch to stream PS4 games. What a waste. Thank God the developers and communities loved it.
Are people still getting blocked from playing their PS1 and PSP games on PS3 and Vita? I've been keeping my Vita strictly offline since I read about that.
@S1ayeR74 Yeah. I was a day one early adopter. Super psyched for the Vita. Got the limited edition pre-order bundle with the AT&T wireless everyone laughed at, Little Deviants, and the best case ever made for vita.
Then I watched that Feb 2013 PS4 presentation where Vita became a PS4 accessory, and died a little inside. It was an amazing machine, and deserved so much better support as a primary product.
Funny thing is it was switch before there was switch... Imagine the success it could have had of they actually believed in it.
Still have that little deviants cart on the table right here... Fond memories of a lousy game that was my introduction to a great console!
@get2sammyb Reddit thread has been updated, Sony knew about the issue and has already resolved/fixed it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/vita/comments/udukdn/megathread_there_are_currently_issues_with_the/
@Bleachedsmiles Nah, I love my hacked Vita specifically because it lets me play a huge variety of games away from my TV & PC — in front of the air conditioner on hot days, in bed late at night or on lazy Sunday mornings, when I'm sitting at my mom's bedside when she's in the ER or hospital...
Just let it die. Ps vita is dead system. Playstation gotta shut down ps store of old systems
@meyerparkX Why do you figure Sony "needs" to kick old systems off the store...? I'd say that the PSP is pretty much dead, but the Vita is thriving thanks to the modding community in spite of Sony's chronic neglect.
@MiaowMinx Sony has their own problems and Sony is broke. They can't tail keeping old consoles ps store for the entire life of ps5 lol. Ps5 might be the final playstation generation too. Sony wanted to close ps: ps vita ps stores from over a year ago, so they seemingly gonna shut down ps stores this year like what it looks like on ps vita right now
Odd, even on Russian PSS with its proverbial latest limitations, the game pages are still accessible via console app search - just checked it again to be sure. Or does the error pop up when trying to process a purchase?
I agree with the top commenter. As a Vita owner it may have had SOME good games but the support it got or lack thereof was just dreadful. It still makes me mad thinking about it.
@Uncharted2007 I agree with you. Don't know why people are hostile towards you because support wise the Vita was dreadful, it was just a total flop. It makes me mad just thinking about it even yet.
@RubyCarbuncle probably because they find his comment unnecessary? Like, if you don't have a vita, good for you? Why wish for it be completely abandoned when some people are still buying psvita games and enjoying the handheld?
Support after the second year was minimal, but overall it was much better than what people who only see things either black or white suggest. Little Big Plant, Tearaway, Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice (among other first party games) were simply/arguably fantastic.
@meyerparkX "Sony has their own problems and Sony is broke"
Any source for this, other than "dude, trust me"?
@NEStalgia It is a fantastic little machine; so much potential, I have my launch PSP still too that still works, although I don't use it much these days as I want it to last and not kill the laser. Both devices are pocketable though. I have a Switch OG model too but don't use it much. I still use my Vita though. I couldn't believe what Sony did to it? I think they were scared of competing with the mobile gaming market revolution that was growing and tablet gaming. And Apple. Funny thing now is all the successful mobile apps these days are based on console games.
Sony are having an absolute nightmare. What are they playing at?!?!?
The vita is an amazing machine. Sony have treated it horribly like anything that does go over 100% from day one. They ditch it and forget about it.
Vita was a machine they could have supported and over time it would have been an amazing success. I love mine. I don’t play JRPGs.
@naruball Oh, I still have my PSV. I use it to play Uncharted every other year or so.
Seems odd to me that fans of a system can't handle that someone has valid criticism of it well after its lifespan. This would be the 10 year anniversary of the PSV so if you're still seeing any releases on it by random indies... enjoy I guess.
So many people I know from back in the day that were Sony fans and loved their PSP's but refused to buy a Vita due to the insane cost of the memory cards. Just imagine where we'd be now if they'd have gone with a standard SD card instead. Undoubtedly that decision alone cost them lost millions in sales of the unit. Moving forward with the PS5 they learned the lesson and you aren't forced to buy a Sony SSD. We could be on a PS Vita 2 by now if only those sales had been like that of the PSP, or cards priced the same as the memory stick duos and allowing third parties to make them. The Vita is still such an amazing handheld to this day.
@Uncharted2007 lol, what was your original comment? From reading through the comments it seems you said it has the worst library of games?
It probably was something a little different as it was removed but if not, shame on PS for removing the comment. 🤣
@ZeD Eh, I won't repeat it. The comment wasn't out of line but from a mod's perspective, I can completely agree with them wanting to remove it. It was actually unconstructive. The argument is detailed better in further replies I made which I'm guessing you read.
My initial response was a knee jerk reaction as I feel cheated out of hundreds of dollars for my initial purchase of the PSV. It was the system that turned me completely off of handheld gaming from then on and why I now wait for Sony to prove to me I should buy their side gigs. As an example, PSVR2 will not be purchased until there's a decent library, reviews from users confirming motion sickness is handled better and a severe price drop.
@Uncharted2007 Ah ok. No problem. Always difficult trying to continue a narrative when the first comment is deleted lol
@S1ayeR74 Sony has a terrible track record of coming out with great products and then abandoning them as soon as they don't meet sales expectations, though it's usually not for "core" products like that. (Except Minidisc which they tried to make happen for years and years even though nobody was buying it...)
Vita was a perfect storm. PSP was a problem with the battery hack for piracy which partly led to them messing up with forcing their absurdly priced proprietary memory, even though they already had a more common niche proprietary overpriced memory in Memory Stick, then they did their stingy thing and didn't even include enough to run a game with the purchase. That hindered sales, and it snowballed from there.
The analysts at the time all said handheld gaming was dead and mobile was replacing it. Low initial sales while Apple soared seemed to confirm it. The analysts thought 3DS was doomed for the same reason with its initial rough start and Vita would at least dominate handhelds, but Vita struggled, and then Nintendo price cut 3DS where Vita couldn't follow, took off, and Sony didn't want to be fighting against another DS success. And coming off the poor finances of the PS3, and broader Sony Corp. financial trouble, they could afford only to back a winner, so they threw everything at PS4, and supposedly the existence of the PS brand (and possibly all Sony Corp.) hinged on it being successful. So they just jettisoned anything not guaranteed to win.
Perfect storm of wrong timing, high price, and confusing industry understanding of mobile's market. Plus, just competing against Nintendo in handhelds is a challenge even without mobile in the way. Sony, at least at the time always had a mindset that if they're not the market leader, they don't want to be in that market, and between mobile and Nintendo, handheld would never see them as the leader, so they just aren't interested. But I do remember the doom and gloom of that era with the idea of bespoke handhelds being obsolete in the face of iPads.
Switch, for all its flaws, is kind of a miracle that it managed to become a sales juggernaut in the supposedly post-handheld era. Handhelds probably really "should" be dead in the face of mobile, so it's a miracle to have a proper handheld that thrives. Even if I have a ton of complaints about it. The new OLED model kind feels like a jumbo Vita. But not as portable. And with a worse interface.
Vita is still the best OS/interface Sony's ever made. Such a great machine. It didn't even get enough attention to become an obsolete beloved icon outside a small niche. Even WiiU will remain more iconic, though for all the wrong reasons.
@ZeD He basically gave his own personal opinion on the Vita. Because most people here disagreed they ganged up. Why? I do not know. Seeing his original comment removed disappoints me because I don't want Push Square to become like Twitter.
@RubyCarbuncle You know what, yeah. I 1000% disagreed with him, but saying something other people don’t like should never result in punishment. That’s messed up PushSquare.
@Rob_230 that was a fantastically informative post and I'm now very keen on checking the channel and the book.
Thank you for sharing this!
@Goat_FromBOTW
Pushsquare have every right to try and shape their community to be the way they want it to be, and not be a sandbox for every shouter with an axe to grind. The bulk of the net is filled with that nonsense and even the poster admits he was unconstructive.
If you like unconstructive posturing and flaming, there a million subreddits where you can knock yourself out, but I'd prefer the mods here to keep posts constructive and not be yet another sewer pipe spewing the filth the net churns up every minute!
I've fallen foul myself, and I'm happy they police it.
That's not the same as filtering opposing views - as you can see he's been clearly allowed to express his view, even though its clearly not in line with what most of think. Sensible modding is a win.
I don't blame Sony for anything to do with the vita. Unless your console started with an 'N' 3rd parties were not so likely to support it, as at the time the industry was obsessed with chasing money from mobiles (and much of it still is), so people wanted to jump into that business model if they were going to develop a portable game. The hardware was fantastic, but sales still faltered behind much inferior consoles and the support was slow to come from 3rd parties. I don't think these situations were a fault of Sony, and if it didn't make any money, I don't think you can blame them for moving on, but others obviously think different!
Glad to see it's all been resolved. Long live Vita!
I really do love my Vita and have secured (either physically or virtually) almost all of the games I want for it in the event PS ever completely shuts the store down. That said, I really wish they hadn't abandoned 1st party publishers for the platfom so quickly (or vice versa). I enjoyed all the FPS games they initially offered (Resistance, Killzone and yes even the largely hated COD: Black Ops Declassified) as well as Batman, God of War, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and a few other games. I feel like if more of those games had been developed, the console would have had more longevity to it. But oh well, it is what it is and I still enjoy the games I have for it.
Glad to hear it was fixed. But this is another reminder that the Vita store is living on borrowed time..
@Uncharted2007 "Seems odd to me that fans of a system can't handle that someone has valid criticism of it well after its lifespan"
Calling your own criticism "valid" is pretty funny.
Also, wishing for a system to be abandoned has nothing to do with criticism, just like telling someone that their head it too big for their body has nothing to do with constructive criticism.
I, personally, welcome criticism, when I think it's fair. For example, saying that it wasn't properly supported by Sony. But, if someone were to say that it had zero support from Sony, that would be a downright lie.
@NEStalgia "Vita was a perfect storm. That hindered sales, and it snowballed from there."
I don't think that was the problem. Apple and Nintendo have shown that people will buy anything no matter how ridiculously expensive/overpriced it is, as long it is considered a hot item.
The problem with the psvita was the constant negativity that surrounded it. It started with Ninty securing an exclusive Monster Hunter for 3ds and it launching along with psv in Japan. Thanks to Monster Hunter (which was huge in Japan and invigorated psp sales), the 3ds beat psv in its launch week. Then all the media were calling doom and gloom and many western sites were saying that it's a failure and they have "inside information" that Sony won't even release psv in the West. There was so much negativity that psv became the butt of the joke. No one wanted to buy it apart from a few enthusiasts. No matter what Sony did, it was impossible to control the narrative and change people's perceptions of it. The battle had already been lost and Sony could keep supporting it and losing money or pretty much cut their losses.
@naruball The system is 10 years old and hasn't had industry support for at least half of that. The mod community has kept Frankenstein alive far longer than anyone anticipated.
Sony supported it for about 20% of its life. That's pathetic. That's a "fair" criticism regardless what you think.
@naruball True about hot items, but I'm not sure the world was quite there yet back when Vita launched. The whole hot item craze is depressing. People don't even know what they buy, the just buy because everyone else bought it. 3ds was amazing, but mostly because it got the library vita should have had. Though I admit I loved the 3d. The screen seemed so much bigger than it is.
But that's a good point about MH in Japan. I forgot about that. With the silly circle pad pro accessory to make it work right. That certainly hurt vita in Japan, though I still think proper support could easily have won Japan back. Unfortunately that's right when ps was transitioning from Kutaragis Japan centric ps to the new PS4 Western ps, and I imagine most of the plans for vita started with kutaragi, and as is common with Japanese executive changes, everything from the old guard is excised.
I'm not sure about the doom and gloom thing. I followed vita hype from the first reveal and I remember the "handheld is doomed" mobile talk before either of them (3ds/vita) launched but also the "3ds is doomed because vita" talk, including patcher, and don't remember a controversy about it not coming to the west, etc. Admittedly at the time I didn't follow Push, it was American media, but other than the handheld being doomed talk, I think things were positive about Vita. It was to be the 3ds killer. And then sales were just flat. The memory cards were the main turn off from the start.
Other than memory the main complaint here at the time was that it was too huge to be portable, and Sony had that "portable but not pocketable" line. Oddly most of the "it's not portable" group loves switch, which is huge, or switch lite which is about the same size.
In many ways the thing that hurt it most, I think, is a thing that was seldom talked about at the time: lack of buttons. Nobody consciously thought about it until it became ps4s remote play accessory, but the lack of full console buttons while promising a PS3 in your pants, made games feel like a weird in between state only emphasized more by the remote play focus.
Either way, I do think Sony could have turned it around with proper focus. They just weren't interested, and weren't in a place to do it, and didn't really want to compete for #2. I wonder if vitatv we're integrated into the real console and advertised properly if they could have been switch before switch. Then again, Sony is drunk on power enough from dominating consoles, I don't think I want to see an industry where they dominated handhelds too...
But I still miss vita.....
@Uncharted2007 Again, calling your own criticism "fair" is unintentionally hilarious, but, by all means, you do you.
