Holy crap it's actually happening: a new Monkey Island game has just been announced. It's being developed by Ron Gilbert's Terrible Toybox, and the man himself is spearheading both game design and writing alongside Dave Grossman. It's being published by Devolver Digital, and it's aiming for a 2022 release. Wow!
Great news for fans of point and click adventures, but unfortunately, no platforms have been confirmed. No doubt Return to Monkey Island will be a PC title first and foremost, but we're hoping for a PlayStation port. Hey, now that we think about it, it would be great if we could get the classic Monkey Island games on modern PlayStation consoles as well ā maybe this newly revealed sequel will kick things into gear?
Did you expect to be hearing about a new Monkey Island today? Fight like a cow in the comments section below.

Take my money. Its that simple.
No way! Very very cool, especially with Ron Gilbert returning.
@Slippship I give up! You win!
The fact that no platforms have been confirmed gives me hope, but...wouldn't want to jump the gun.
"Look behind you, a Three-Headed Monkey!"
Wait? What? It's real? We are 3 days past April Fools
Its Devolver Digital so PC first and maybe Switch. Then Xbox. Then PS maybe 2 years later or never lol
TAKE. MY. MONEY. Favourite game series growing up. Hope against hope this comes to Playstation. If Devolver are making it, that shouldn't be an issue.
Wonder if that means Disney finally sold the rights back to Ron. Although Lucasarts Games are named in the trailer š¤
Was worried after the recent Sea if Thieves tie in that maybe Xbox had snapped up the IP. Hopefully not the case!
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
I am so excited for this.
I will probably play this on PC, but hopefully SIE's 5% ownership of Devolver means that PS ports of their games come out sooner.
@Slippship how appropriate, you fight like a cow!
Ahoy there fancy pants,I never saw this coming!
<ā Arghhh this is my favourite franchise ever. Secret of Monkey Island was one of my first ever gaming experiences on the Amiga 500. This makes me so happy.
Please please please have a "pixel-art" toggle.
Well this is quite the surprise!š Ron Gilbert had been quite vocal against petitioning Disney to sell the rights back...quite logically reasoning the bigger the public interest, the likelihood of a higher asking price! Obviously must've changed his stance on licensing the IP off them at least.
Agree though-would love to have seen at least the first two,(if not also Curse of Monkey Island, even if Mr Gilbert wasn't a fan of it!),Monkey Island games get ported...even if it was the so-so Special Editions. Not graphically the greatest, but including full speech & options to switch between old school visuals still made it worthwhile on ps3!š
I wasn't a gamer when I was a kid, but an exception to that was Monkey Island. Loved playing the first 2 games on Amiga and picked up the 3rd and 4th on PC later on.
omg YES! I adore this series, my childhood spent trying to figure out some insane puzzles!
Is this real? Please say yes, please don't let it be an April fool's joke
This is incredible news for fellow Point and Click fans. Now, in the meantime, just re-release the Special Editionās of the first two Monkey Island games, please. Pretty please?
Really great that this is happening. I just hope they can inject the same humour into it as was in the original games.
Best news on a Monday ever printed! Might want to amend the story to say the special editions of the first two games are available to stream on PS Now and I would imagine will be included in the new PS Plus services. Doubt we will ever get downloadable versions as the are PS3 ports.
Nice, I hope the puzzle isn't too hard though.
@Jayslow all 12 disks! Glad I had an extra disk drive.
As for this news, sorry PS, need for Switch!
And great to see Murray the demonic skull!
How appropriate. You fight like a cow!
Looking forward to tell āIām selling these fine leather jackets.ā to some lowly pirates! This is HUGE!
@eltomo or how about that multi layered wheel you would spin to match up the pirate head as an early DRM type system.
@Jayslow I didn't need it, I don't think I had any non pirated game on my Amiga.
But my mate had the wheel for his PC, I generally wanted it!
Ha oh yesss! Great and unexpected news for sure
Thimbleweed Park was excellent, and my hopes are high for this one
Ideally it drops on Switch as well as PS/XB - for me this would be a great title to play handheld whilst on the move / travelling
Exciting news! Loved these games back in the day.
Return to monke!
Right after I finished playing Escape From Monkey Island! How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
One of the best gaming news ever!š I loved the first two games (despite the non-sense ending of LeChuck's Revenge), enjoyed the third game, and pretty much loathed the fourth and fifth game (though I liked Morgan LeFlay from Tales).
Btw, for everyone who liked Curse of Monkey Island's story and worries it will be non-canon now, Gilbert confirmed it won't be cut of the canon lore.

I THINK I'M PSYCHIC????
Randomly during my afternoon walk yesterday I was like oh yeah I feel like cranking the monkey island theme. Few hours after I did, this announcement comes outta nowhere.
DAY 1 BAYBEE
Awesome news, the remasters of 1 & 2 were great nostalgia trips and still play them on my Series X. 2 of my favourite games and can remember begging my mum to let me ring the help number for one bit. A world before the internet in our hands š¤£
"That's the second biggest monkey head I've ever seen".
Love the Monkey Island games! Great news - and with Ron Gilbert back at the helm as well!
Boy, this stuff makes my spit thick.
I've never played any of the games before, but happy for all the fans!
