Ubisoft's at it again! The French publisher is reportedly developing a new battle royale game, possibly codenamed Pathfinder. This is according to industry tipster Tom Henderson, who writes that gameplay will be team-based, with groups attempting to reach the middle of the map in order to fight a big AI boss. The premise sounds fairly unique, we suppose.
The report also suggests that player characters will be distinct 'heroes', each with their own abilities — like in Overwatch or Apex Legends. However, the project is still in its early stages, so the finer details haven't been hammered out yet.
If all of this is true, then 'Pathfiner' is pretty much going to be Ubisoft's second attempt at cracking the battle royale shooter market, following on from Hyper Scape. That game is still set to be shut down later in the month, following a statement from Ubisoft back in December. Basically, the company explained that no one was playing it.
Will Pathfinder have a better shot at success? Tough to say. Obviously we'll have to see this thing in action, but even then, it's just so hard to break into the battle royale genre — and it's harder still to maintain a healthy userbase.
Dare we ask if you like the sounds of Pathfinder? Give Ubisoft some pointers in the comments section below.

~Ubisoft~
I was going to mention that cyberpunky battle royale they did that failed but I genuinely cannot remember the name of it.
So abit like hunt, though that doesn't count as a BR for some reason.
@nessisonett hyperscape
Daring today, aren't we?
There's no one I trust less to support a live service game than Ubisoft.
@jFug They've done a pretty good job with the past two Assassin's Creed games.
I don't know why they think they can come up with a hero shooter-style BR game when they don't need to. Why try and come up with something zany and different? Just provide a great shooting experience.
Like the games or not, Ubisoft has 2 franchises with rock solid TPS mechanics at their core: Division and Ghost Recon. I don't get why they don't go after PUBG, which is hugely popular despite looking and running like garbage.
They could easily build upon the mechanics of those 2 franchises and build out a realistic near-future military-style TPS BR game and capture some of PUBG (and now Fortnite's No Build mode) with simple stuff like a host of vehicles, weapon attachments, squad-based gameplay for groups, true cover shooting mechanics, and near-future tech to spice up the core shooting (which in my opinion are the best TPS mechanics on the market).
Just make a good game and players will play it. Period.
Oh dear God in Heaven not again. As much as I dislike Fortnite nothing is going to dethrone it, nothing absolutely nothing. They can try but they'll fail.
I can't even roll my eyes even further in my dam skull 🙄🙄😤

I can’t express how little I care about stuff like this. Barely games as far as I’m concerned. Just places for people to hang out and chat with mates while doing the same mindless things over and over again.
Things like this are classed as gaming Transmitted diseases (GTD)
They are a plague to the gaming industry
Ubi is really going to set the world on fire with this...
LMAO let's go Ubisoft! This will be fun...To see how they'll fail disastrously.
They'll make all these soulless characters with so many lame customisations and outfits. So many different weapons and dances that only Ubisoft will think looks cool. They'll all play the same, because the core gameplay sucks. The sound will suck, the game will be released broken. The physics will suck. The script... it will suck beyond belief as the best way to play Ubi games is to play them with voice volume on mute.
I'll be there on day one Ubisoft. Let's go! Battle royale's are still cool! The BR games successful right now are tooooootally not successful, because of their core gameplay, but they're only successful, because they're a BR... Sure Ubisoft! Let's cash in! Let's be relevant yaaay!
Well, whoop de ***** doo.
I like battle royales a lot, honestly. I know a lot of serious gamers won’t admit that. But it’s been a really long time since a worthwhile one has popped up. I’d really like a new one, but this looks like Ubisoft’s take on Apex, so I’ll say no thank you.
Now, if only Halo would save their multiplayer and do the right thing though…. Or Splitgate. That could be fun!
That image looks just like some Fortnite skins to me.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
@RubyCarbuncle okay what about cod warzone? that games been crazy popular for years with arguably a higher player base as well as an arguably better gameplay loop then fortnite.
Hope it fails just like Hyper Scape did.
The worst company around on all fronts they brought us everything from the monetization of a mobile phone in a €60-90 game, playing a beta on the release date and always online be certain that your purchase will be useless in the near future.
@alexbolton2 True but my point is both of those games are extremely popular now and no matter how many copycats come along they'll never reach the same level of popularity.
@Resi32 for better words...
@LazyLombax agree 100%. They had a flash in the pan success because gamers were hungry for Halo, and since Infinite released, I feel like Splitgate has more or less been… there? With that kind of investment, you sort of expect a game to make some new progress, but really all they’ve done has been fix their server wait times
Yay more hero shooter battle royales...wonder how long the servers will stay online for this one when its released.
So i've tried pretty much all the battle royal type games on the ps4/ps5..warzone is easily the best in my oppinion..bf5's firestorm thingy was very underwhelming..blackout was ok but was really trying to be fortnite for the cod kids..now i hated fortnite on the ps4 as i really didnt like the whole building thing and all the screaming children and some of those were adults too..truly horrible..but i've just tried out the new no build mode on the ps5 despite my reservations and to appease my long suffering wingman shockwave who insisted that its really good and to my utter disdain i have to admit that i'm actually enjoying fortnite..i feel filthy and i hate myself..
Please just make a normal hero shooter, stop with the battle royal bs.
The only entertaining hero shooter alive right now is Paladins. We need more quality hero shooters, and devs that have the passion to keep updating and balancing the game frequently to keep it fresh( blizzard, I am looking at you).
We really need more ftp battle royale games 🙄
If successful, that will become a money tree. So they will throw everything and see what sticks. Apart from Fornite, (to some extent PUBG as being the first Royale game, Apex, COD, Genshin impact and fall guys) other free live service games are not doing very well. I hope we got another when Factions 2 launch. Would be nice if given free to all PS plus tier members
@RubyCarbuncle yeah but it makes for great competition because each br game does something better than the next and it is great for the gaming industry think of it like call of duty isn't the only fps game people keep making fps games to directly compete with cod(not often successfully I may add but i digress) but it creates urgency to create a better game hypothetically of course
@alexbolton2 True 👍
@PlatinumGamer Exactly, and Hunt will probably be far better for being more original.
