We sincerely hope there’s not a Trophy for seeing all of the endings in upcoming teen horror The Quarry, because there’s a whopping 186 of them. No, that’s not a typo: one-hundred-and-eighty-six. The developer Supermassive Games explained in an interview with IGN just how it managed to cram so many conclusions into the title.
“We write it like a movie screenplay,” director Will Byles explained. “Actors are used to a 100-page script [on a movie], the script for this is over 1,000 pages. They can get very alarmed. We have to shoot 50 pages a day, which is unheard of. It's a mad amount of footage.” As you’d expect, there’s a lot of repetition of similar scenes, to account for all the gameplay permutations.
“We worked out 186 different endings for those characters, not just alive or dead – the stories that they have on the way through are massively varied. Branches really are a mathematical nightmare. It's just exponential.” We’re going to assume that the endings number is padded by minor permutations – like a character wearing a hat in one conclusion and not in another – but there will be big differences as well.
For example, the title will account for the relationships formed between characters, and the impact they have on the outcome. “We really like the idea of giving you context, so you can have the exact same conversation, but know that that person has just killed someone and the context changes everything,” Byles continued. Super cool!

They're going for the Techland method of measuring a game's length then? Must be a 500 hour game.
Can you imagine you have to get all 186 endings for the platinum trophy 😳
That seems excessive.
@AnotherForge and no tracker!
Really hoping this is more Until Dawn then The Dark Pictures, UD is honestly one of the best horror games off last gen in my opinion.
It must be one of those endings with really subtle differences then surely
I’m a huge trophy hunter. I haven’t played Until Dawn because I figured it would take a few play throughs to get all the trophies. I usually do my research and then play a game twice to get as many trophies as I can, excluding playing a game on hard or beating it in under a certain amount of time. Im interested in The Quarry, and hope it doesn’t take a ton of play throughs to acquire most of the trophies.
They are probably going the fallout-ish path of patching pictures together for each little thing and each combination counts as a different ending(!?)
There's only one ending, the ending where you successfully manipulate the game to kill off all the dweebs you dislike.
Life is The Quarry
Brings back memories of when i was a kid, choose your own adventure books were huge and i tried writing my own.
Started with huge ambitions, i found the existing ones to be fun but too small, mine were always going to be the biggest ones ever, but quickly got lost/bored trying to keep track of all the different options I was putting in.
This like the move 'Clue' from the 80's. It had 3 different endings when it was released at theaters - so I could go to one theater and see one ending and you could go to another and see an entirely different ending.
I hope that doesn't mean you have to do 186 playthroughs to get the Platinum
Big Shadow the Hedgehog energy!
Focking hell! hope it's not a trophy requirement, lol!
Meaningful endings...Doubt..lol
@BobbyDG
Definitely play Until Dawn, it's a fun game even for trophy hunters like us. You could do it in 1 playthrough and some chapter select replays but I definitely recommend for your first run going in blind (just try to find as many collectibles as possible but don't worry because it's impossible to get them in first playthrough). Trophy difficulty is only 2/10 so not a long one either 👍
@hugoadan @DualWielding @AnotherForge Same here, I won't be bothering with the platinum if all 186 endings are required.
So this isn't like fallout 3 where they have a still image with text and call it an ending?
@nessisonett that’s what ruined the game for me as a kid , i liked the edginess and was so excited black sonic had a gun! but could you imagine an 8 year old trying to figure that convoluted ***** out ?? 😂 i nearly cried i couldn’t figure out if it was too short or if i beat the game or not !
i thought about replaying it for years now
@Icey664 Thanks for the advice! I didn’t think the trophy difficulty would be that low. I’m more interested now. I’ve only heard good things about the game. I’ll give it a shot after I finish The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2.
@BobbyDG
Sounds good! Hope you enjoy it 😁
@KidBoruto
Highly doubt that will be the case lol
I mean 14 x 14 is 196, so your likely looking at 13 or 14 characters which can each live or die. That would make up the endings. It’ll likely result in a short recap cutscene at the end explaining who lived and died, and the result. Can’t wait 👍
I like the idea that it is just different hat permutations for characters.
geez and i played gamesto see all endings but these type of games start to change from your first choice it gets really complicated lol
I hate it when studios are like "the game has 500 different endings!" and you think it sounds cool and then you get the game and it's like "Okay and in this ending this lady is wearing a green hat instead of blue."
They couldn't make up their mind about how to end the game, so they included all the drafts as endings.
"We’re going to assume that the endings number is padded by minor permutations – like a character wearing a hat in one conclusion and not in another"
The immense majority will be this, one hundred percent. Character C gets or doesn't get an ugly face wound in Scene 27 so his epilogue scene depicts that accordingly. "Branching paths", baby!
Ending no 97 will be a doozy , where a T Rex appears out of thin air and eats everybody !
I liked Until Dawn alot. Might play The Dark Pictures while Im waiting for this. Should I get the Trilogy or just go for House Of Ashes? Anyone played them?
That’s just too many. I commend their ambition though
@Tsushima
I loved Until Dawn and was very excited for The Dark Pictures, but so far they've all left me a little bit cold. I would say I actually liked Man of Medan best. I haven't even gotten myself to finish House of Ashes, so read into that what you will.
(though, you should definitely give them a try, I figured I'd just try to temper expectations a bit )
Kinda reminds me of the way Corpse Party had a large number of bad endings per chapter, which allowed the developers to explore the worst case outcome of almost any given situation. But 186 is... well, hard to see how the writing quality will keep up with some of these.
As Gaige from Borderlands would say, The completionist in me is like YEEAAAH!
@Icey664 Hopefully so, I just can't see myself wasting the time doing all endings.
So by the time I beat this game fully I'll be dead 🤣
@RubyCarbuncle Resulting in 187 endings!
Gonna guess this wil be less impressive than the number sounds.
