Earlier this year, developer Velan Studios announced its intention to re-launch Knockout City as a free-to-play game. The excellent multiplayer dodge-brawl title has always appeared to be perfectly suited to this model, and it's soon to adopt this new approach. News of the shift has been known for a while — we've just been missing a launch date. Now, with Season 6 on the cusp of release, we have our answer.
So, Knockout City will become totally free-to-play on 1st June 2022, day and date with the arrival of Season 6. You can watch a trailer for the new season above.
With this shift come a few question marks, so let's quickly go through some of that. When 1st June rolls around, the game will be leaving EA Play. If you already own Knockout City (either through purchase or PS Plus), you'll be entitled to the Loyalty Royalty Bundle, which gifts you "exclusive legendary cosmetics, XP boosts, and 2,000 Holobux". You shouldn't need a PS Plus subscription to play it once it's free-to-play, but Velan Studios is still "working through some details" on that front. On the monetisation side, things are pretty much staying the same — Holobux, the in-game currency, can be earned through play or purchased outright, as normal, The Brawl Pass can still be progressed for free, but you'll be able to buy a premium tier, either with Holobux or real money, if you really want the top-end cosmetics.
As for what Season 6 offers, the first addition is a new ball, the Boomerang Ball, which returns to you after hitting its target. Catch it and its power and speed will grow. Elsewhere, the Hideout hub area is being expanded, and will feature an area where you can play soccer as well as some basketball hoops to play with. Finally, there will be several special events happening over the next couple of months to keep things fresh.
It's all looking up for Knockout City, then — will you be giving it a try once it goes free-to-play? Don't dodge the question in the comments section below.

This is a fun game. I loved it.
I say to anyone who hasn't played it to give it a try
Removed - unconstructive
It actually is a ton of fun to play. Hopefully it can find some footing. Anything a little different than point and shoot first is good in my books.
I enjoyed the few hours I've played but I think this may be too late to save this game
Is there any offline couch co-op or versus or is it all 1 player per console online only?
What a surprise.
Love this game, need to get back into it.
Theirs another Plus game now gone F2P. Seems like thats starting to be a theme with Sony.
With this going F2P you can tell its struggling. The game will probably be dead soon. Like how most live service games end up.
I hope they find success. Game is incredibly underrated.
@lolwhatno Thanks for the reminder. Looks like online only, which I don't even consider a multiplayer game, that's an online game. I mean come on, is there any game anyone would call "online" without it being multiplayer? So I don't need to call a game "online multiplayer" if I'm calling it online, that's redundant.
Online = multiplayer
Multiplayer = couch co-op or versus
So I'll be skipping this one.

Thought it was f2p all this time, but this is good news. First I was a big naysayer to free to play games, but actually I think it's a good fit for these (usually) short lived online multiplayer schticks.
@lolwhatno Part of my problem with these non-answers like "split screen" is that a couch mutliplayer game doesn't need to be split screen. Super Smash Bros Ultimate is 8 player - EIGHT - couch and there is no split screen. My wife and I have been playing a lot of couch co-op lately w/o split screen - Knack 2, Sackboy's Great Adventure, Luigi's Mansion 3.
So any company that answers - "There is no split screen" is NOT answering the question - "Is there couch offline multiplayer?" b/c offline multiplayer and split screen are 2 different things.
Doesn't that make the fact it was released as a 'free' game on ps plus a bit of a kick in the... well, balls?
No time for online only games. If this had offline modes I'd give it another go. Similar to the new Roller Skating one. Not interested in playing online so it's a no from me.
@lolwhatno why not actually buy a game. Lol
