The Last of Us Remake is one of the industry’s worst kept secrets, and it’s not far off. That’s according to journalist Jeff Grubb, who’s reiterating rumours that have been swirling for several months now. According to the scribe, who was speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, he “keeps hearing [that the game’s] coming out this year”.
He added: “You’ve got to keep in mind that The Last of Us: Part 2 came out a while ago, and there’s people at that studio who were looking around for something to do. It’s a pretty efficient and well-oiled machine over there at Naughty Dog, and they don’t have to do too much because that’s the whole point – it’s a game they can update really quickly.”
Grubb reiterated that he’s fairly confident the remake’s coming out this holiday, and that it will be one of Sony’s big games. While the HBO television adaptation is not due to release until next year, he rightly pointed out that it doesn’t matter too much if the launches aren’t aligned: the plan will be to have a product already available on shelves for when the show drops.
If the game is due out later this year, then presumably it’s something we’ll learn about relatively soon, when PlayStation decides to refresh its release schedule. There’s still no word on how Naughty Dog’s previously announced The Last of Us: Part 2 multiplayer spin-off will factor into this, but hopefully we’ll be treated to the bigger picture soon.

Im not very excited about this game but I would play through them both again if they release a PS5 upgrade for part 1 and 2 together
Hopefully. I need some more bangers. I'm running out of games. Just finished Ghostwire and I'm about to start Salt and Sacrifice. The Last Of Us Remake would be a great time, if it does come out this year.
Cmon Sony do something.
I honestly have no idea why they would make this instead of a Jak and Daxter 4. They put a lot of fans off with TLOU2 and suddenly coming back to it so soon? A lot of fans are not going to go for this
Tell you what, if Sony manages to get God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us Remake out this year, potentially alongside something like Final Fantasy XVI, it'll be massive for PlayStation.
Still seems unlikely to me, but you never know.
"pretty efficient and well-oiled machine over there at Naughty Dog..."
So why is Factions 2 still not out almost 2 years after Tlou2...
@Lem1697 "I honestly have no idea why they would make this instead of a Jak and Daxter 4."
Are you serious?
The one game on planet earth that never needed a remake...
This remake is literally pointless. Just a cash grab from Sony I think
Still don't get why a game that already (kinda) is on PS5 and still looks good needs a remake
@IonMagi Because clearly the scale of it is quite enormous.
I personally would prefer a Jak and Daxter 4.. haha.. The Last of Us 1 is awesome already.
Or an Uncharted sequel game with Chloe, or Nathan´s brother.
“You’ve got to keep in mind that The Last of Us: Part 2 came out a while ago, and there’s people at that studio who were looking around for something to do.”
1) its not really old at all. Too recent in fact for an upgrade already. We’ve had the 60fps patch, surely that’s enough? The game already looks great.
2) People at the studio looking for something to do? How about a new IP?!?! Instead of this endless cycle of remasters and remakes 🙄
@mariomaster96 To modernise it for the millions of people that are going to get into the game following the TV show.
They can adapt the gameplay and combat encounters to make it consistent with The Last of Us 2.
(I also think it's a teensy bit unnecessary, but will unquestionably be a massive hit.)
@Nightcrawler71 To respond to your second point, not everyone at a huge studio like Naughty Dog is in a directorial position capable of coming up with a new IP. And it also takes time for those ideas to cook and formulate.
The alternative is to lay off all those programmers, artists, etc while you figure out what's next. Obviously they want to keep that talent around, so while they plan out the next thing, they gave them a project to bridge the gap. And it'll be massively successful, too.
@Nightcrawler71 According to Jason Schrier they are doing a new IP. It is just a division between the large Technical staff and the Creative staff. The Creative staff is in preproduction for a new IP so the Technical staff needed something to do until it reaches full production. Sony decided to give them the Remake to work on since they just came off of TLOU2 and are familiar with it.
@Rural-Bandit Yeah I think it's just the way Sony seems to operate now. It tends to announce stuff much close to release, rather than years away. Which is probably a good thing overall, but like you say, it makes it feel like we don't really know what to look forward to.
They did the same with the Uncharted package - so it sounds highly realistically.
I honestly can't wait for this. Naughty Dog can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. However, I agree that this remake isn't really needed, unless they add some new content (a new chapter? A flashback to Joel's past as a hunter?). We'll know soon enough.
This would be fantastic if it came just in time for Christmas. God of War and Hogwarts would be out around the same time too.
Amazing.
Combine that with the releases from Feb to May, and possibly FF XVI as ShogunRok mentions above, and I'm struggling to remember many years better than 2022 for releases.
That's if it all goes the way we're hoping, of course.
The Last of Us REALLY doesn’t need a full remake, the game looks and plays fine now with the PS4 version. It honestly feels like a waste.
When is the Returnal remake scheduled?
Well like I said in a previous article I'm just glad they are getting it out of their system soon so they can move on to something more interesting. I love TLOU1 but the only reason I'd pick this up full price is if it has Factions which I doubt it will. Can't wait for ND's next project though.
Thinking of what could be updated in a remake, some things come to mind for me:
1) New accessibility options - tLou2 has a ton of awesome options available
2) better graphics (of course the PS4 remaster looks great, but better is better)
3) New gameplay functionality such as: going prone; environment interactions; objects to hide under; better gunplay; more weapon options; more open environments; more enemy types; dodging; jumping
4) updated trophy list. No multiplayer trophies!
5) updated music, sounds, VO
6) new Factions multiplayer included
Not that they couldn’t have done something new, but just some potential things that could be coming.
The remake no one wanted or asked for, could of put these resources into third game or new IP or even remastered one of thier older games . Pointless cash grab
I'll be behind this if it's not just a 1:1 remake.
Add in some content, expand on side stories and smaller characters, add in additional gameplay mechanics and items.
If the integrate 'Left Behind' into the story rather than it been an extra from the main menu, then I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Whilst its easier to get excited for new product, im not against playing an updated classic, and this fits that bill nicely.
I hope theres enty more to choose from come holliday though.
The last of us is one of my fav games. So I'm really looking forward to see how they changed the first game to be more inline with the show.
Last of Us getting the GTA V treatment and being milked across 3 console generations lmao
With so many games being delayed, it makes sense the big 3 would bust out some remasters. This, gears of war hd, and supposedly wind waker or metroid prime hd....SUPPOSEDLY
@Nightcrawler71 Your reply shows your complete lack of knowledge on the development process. This is perfectly fine use of staff while you ramp up new ip in concept phase.
TLOU was one of my favorite games on PS3 and I'm completely bored just thinking of the remake. But whatever milk it now and use that money hopefully for a desperately needed new IP from ND.
Why did they never upgrade Uncharted 1-3 for the PS5?
Holiday release for this would make a lot of sense business wise. Get the enthusiasts right off the bat, then the wave next year during/after the tv show when things would normally slow down sales wise. The Witcher 3 got a nice boost in sales in the wake of the show and I’d expect more of the same here.
Why are they remaking this game? It still looks and plays good today. A waste of resources in my opinion.
Probably trying to keep up with GTA 5 and Skyrim to see how many platforms they can keep re-releasing the game. 😅
I am firmly in the “doesn’t need a remake” camp, actually I feel like I helped discover the land the tents are being pitched on, but thinking about it, if they absolutely crank the graphics up to 11 it could be cool just to see a little more what the PS5 is capable of.
Unless this is some cross gen BS and we end up with the remastered version and the remake on PS4, which will just be laughable
Another rumor and could put PS with 4 potential exclusives for this fall in FF16, Forspoken, God of War and Last of Us remake. No way all 4 come out as they would spread 2 into Q1 2023 for pacing
Honestly, I'm torn.
I love TLoU a lot, and heard so much bad about TLoU2 that I never picked it up - yes, I was scared off. A revisit might not be a bad idea, if it's really improved dramatically - but I've been down this road already, playing it on the PS3 and PS4, so a PS5 version would be a THIRD trip for me. I'm more likely to dive into something new.
They are going to lock factions 2 behind this remake arn't they.
Whilst a remake feels unecessary, bringing the gameplay up to modern standards will make a big difference
I don’t have as much of a hatred for this game as much as others. I’ll probably buy it for like $30-40 like 1 or 2 years down the line. However, the thing most interesting is how this seems to essentially be a side project that started around the time LoU 2 wrapped up. If Naughty Dog starts regularly releasing smaller projects with a big project somewhere in the mix, then they might be one of the more efficient Sony first party devs in the PS5 gen (but Insomniac is still probably gonna hold that title of course)
Do I need this? Definitely not.
Will I pre-order the collector’s edition and platinum it straight away? Bet yo ass I will.
The real question is if the addition of Funky Mode really makes a PS3 game worth $70 in 2022.
Such a disappointment that Naughty Dog has essentially focused on nothing but cash grab repackaging and re-releasing since the completion of TLOU2 and even during its development.
Not going to buy into this rampant trend in the industry. Unless this is just a complete remake, I'm not interested. Certainly not interested in replaying the same game, already remastered mind you, just being updated to TLOU2 visuals and mechanics.
At some point one must vote against this trend with your purchasing power, otherwise we will continue to see these games being released several times strewn out among years and years if not over a decade.
I’m just disappointed that for the last 2 years Naughty Dog (arguably the crown jewel of PS Studios) has been working on a remake that literally NO ONE asked for, instead of working on a new game whether is TLOU Part 3 or a new IP, it just seems like a huge waste of time and resources from the most recognized PS studio…
Resident Evil 96 to Resident Evil remake 02 was only 6 years. The Last of Us 2013 to The Last of Us remake 2022 is 9 years. Yh I get the point of view that 96 RE badly needed updating with a remake at the time and the 2013 version of TLOU still looks pretty good including the remaster but even the 2013 version of TLOU will look like muddy poop 30fps compared to a PS5 graphics 4k 60fps remake
Sounds like a lot of words to say what all the rumours have been saying in circle reference for a while.
It’s really big too I guess.
Edit
Forgot the eyes
👀👀👀
@JAMes-BroWWWn Have you tried Hades? I’ve been diggin’ that game for a while now. Definite recommendation from me on that one.
@Beerheadgamer82 I get your point but it's already playable at 4K60FPS on the PS5 (might be 1800p, can't quite remember). So I'd still say its largely unnecessary but I'll probably still buy it and I assume they'll retcon Abbys father into the ending
3 versions of the same game the last of us in a decade is ridiculous.
why risk making new games when people will just buy the same game again and again and again
Sony remakes the last of us and gets called a cash grab.
Nintnedo ports Wii and Wiiu games to the switch and charges £50 yet gets praised.
Atleast a remake isn't lazy and costs a lot to make, they will probably add 4k options and Ray Tracing plus VRR, and hopefully they include the DLC and with an upgraded multiplayer (maybe new modes and maps etc), if so then this will be a hit
Plus for all we know they might of added some new content into the main game, new side stories or enemies. Let's just wait for a reveal before judging
dont worry we'll have a uncharted remake next its been a few years
Isn't LOU 1 already great on PS5?
Codename: Veronica is a game that need a remake. Last of Us its not
2013 they release last of us,
2014 they remaster it on ps4
2016 the patch it to run at 4k on ps4 pro
2022 they remake it
whats next remastering the remake, then ps5 pro patching the remake then remaking the remake
@UltimateOtaku91 I dunno who praised Nintendo for porting Wii U games. In fact, it's an easy jab at the company to question why $50 games became $60.
The only real difference is the Switch's lack of backwards compatibility meaning gems like Pikmin 3 and Tropical Freeze would've otherwise been abandoned and forgotten (one day, Xenoblade Chronicles X... One day). It's still not ideal that they're doing full-price rereleases, but, as someone who gave away their Wii U, I'm happy to be able to play these games again.
If I wanted to play The Last of Us, I'd just play it. If Sony wants to remake a game, I'm down. But maybe pick one that's older than a decade and plays horribly dated. I can't even imagine outright remaking The Last of Us without somehow making an inferior version. It just feels pointless and like Sony well overestimating the appeal of what is essentially just a zombie IP. I'm sure it'll be fine and sell fine, but it won't outdo the readily available remaster on either front.
@get2sammyb So you'd rather have a remake of a fairly recent, modern game (that still looks and plays great on modern hardware by the way) over a potential new entry in a classic and beloved PlayStation franchise?
Are YOU serious?
@jgrangervikings1 OH yeah I have played Hades. A good game. Nice that you are digging it too.
@get2sammyb Yes I am. TLOU still looks and plays great. This remake seems like a waste of time and resources
Probably just me but does anyone else think that factions 2 was just a code word for TLOU Remake and that this will include an updated online factions hence factions 2?
People at naughty dog were “looking around for something to do” hahah
@trev666 o don’t worry they will also release this new one on ps4 so the remake and remaster will be on same system. O how naughty dog has fallen.
I reckon it's to bolster the new ps plus
Rather get a LOU remake than a Pokemon one. But that is not saying much.
Remakes do not reach a main $60/70 release in my book. Even less a "Major Holiday Release" level.
A reworked last of us with 3d audio, duelsense support and raytracing at 60fps?
I don't mind if i do!
@Voltan same. I don't get the hate.
I’m definitely down for another playthrough from the start of the franchise. Just eliminate the online platinum trophies for the original game and dong pull an Uncharted Legacy of Thieves double list with 1 platinum total deal and I’ll be happy.
Do people really think that Naughty Dog is investing all their resources in a remake for this and not working on a new IP lol
This is very likely a side project for some members of staff while Naughty Dog is in the work preparing for their next game
I don't really care for a remake nor think it's a necessity but as long as it's good, makes some improvements and isn't in the £70 range which is a bit much for it I can tolerate it existing
@RobN you are the luckiest guy I know. Never play part 2....😁
@carlos82 yh it's true the PS4 remaster of the PS3 original looks better on the PS4 or through backwards on the PS5 but it's still a PS3 game at heart with a fresh coating of paint. The original I adore too like so many do but it is a little clunky at times and is now 2 generations old. I really need to see the remake running on a PS5 (some actual gameplay) to see whether or not this remake is truly worth it or not. Just reading about it doesn't seem promising much I'll admit but we really need to see it running in game and this might change many peoples minds? mine included. I still have a lot of faith in Naughtydog, not only in this remake but also TLOU2 multiplayer, Part3 and even a fresh new IP
not sure why everyone is whining because Sony/ naughty dog is remaking tlou 1, if you don't want to buy the game, instead of trying to ruin the experience of people who do want the game, just simply move on and show them how much you don't want it by crazy concept here not buying the damn game its pretty simple. but don't try and taint the experience of people that are excited for it.
@Tchunga It's not about what I want; Sony is a business. The original poster had "no idea" why Sony is remaking one of its most successful games of all time, which is about to get a major blockbuster TV show adaptation, instead of a Jak & Daxter sequel.
I think it's pretty easy to understand, no?
This feels completely unnecessary to me. We already have the original PS3 version and the remastered PS4 version, which can be played on a PS5 so do we really need a a remastered remastered edition just for the PS5?? The story was definitely something special back in the day but with so many having experienced it already and ‘zombies’ being a bit passé these days, this feels more like a money grab than anything substantive. But that’s just my personal opinion. To each their own…..
Can't say I've any interest in it and think the time and effort could have been better spent on something new.
A tiny spiteful piece of me kinda hopes it doesn't sell as much as Sony want it to.
Just put it on Steam already so modders can help Big Bird & Elmo cross the barren landscape of now and fight against Count and his horde of Grogers.
I wished the remake would have an expanded version of Factions. Would have made more sense than this massive undertaking of creating and entirely separate experience. Factions was amazing and could easily be expanded into something even more special. Just makes sense to me
Is this going to cost £70? A remake of a remaster of a recent game?
Are there really that many non gamers out there who will watch the TV series and think 'you know what, I must go and suddenly buy a £450 games console to play this'. And good luck finding one
I’m interested, but I’m hoping they went all out with it.
Basically they need to incorporate all of the gameplay changes TLOU2 added. I know the story of that game was… well iffy, but the gameplay was absolutely top notch stuff. Some of the most fun combat in a third person game in years.
Such a worthless update. No one asked for a last of us remake. Its fine on the 4 as one of the finest titles made for the 4. Actually the ps3 but no one plays that version when they have the ps4 remaster already. This could have been a free update if it needed to be anything at all. Especially since according to this article it was no big whoop to make.
Only positive I see is that a release this year would mean it needs to be revealed soon, so we probably won't have to wait until September for a big showcase.
@get2sammyb Okay sure. A Last of Us remake probably makes sense to someone in a suit that's crunching numbers in a boardroom somewhere. Fair enough, I'll give you that. But literally anyone else with even an inch of common sense would tell you that a remake of a game that isn't even a decade old yet and that still holds up extremely well even to this very day is an incredible waste of time and resources.
PSVR2 compatible please!
Otherwise I won't have any interest. The original is still good and I played it recently.
Combining the gameplay of The Last of Us 2 with the story of the first game and you'd have a legit masterpiece. Yes, I know a lot of people thought the first one was, but honestly the real strengths were the story and the characters. I thought there were definite issues, including needing to balance the clickers so they weren't so ridiculously overpowering.
Still, even though I said it doing that would create a masterpiece, I'll still always think it's unnecessary because it's nowhere near old enough. I'll still get it though too, as maybe this will be the experience I've been hoping for from the series (first one had gameplay issues, and the second one was a technical and gameplay masterpiece with a horrible second half of the story imo). I wish Naughty Dog was doing something other than The Last of Us games though.
Part 1 PS5 Remake, packaged with Factions and Part 2 PS5 upgrade.
Said it since the Remake was first rumoured
@Lem1697 The handful of neckbeards and incels upset over Ellie being gay and Abby existing are hardly a majority of the fanbase, i'm willing to bet most loved TLoUP2.
@IonMagi Why isnt GTA 6 out after a decade why is RDR 3 not released yet quality takes time thank God they dont do it any other way.
@Tchunga Still the game is almost 10 years old and and almost 8 years old on the PS4.
@Flaming_Kaiser By that logic every game that's past the 7 year mark should be remade. Regardless if it still holds up or not
So modernize the first game, bundle it with a PS5 and PC ports of the second game to cash in on the HBO show and bring in new fans, make profit.
@IndoorEnthusiast It does make perfect sense from a business point of view. Depending on how they handle the remake (assuming it's real), I may buy it at full price.
Not to say I agree they should be wasting their money, time, and resources on it though. The PS4 remaster still holds up well.
@WallyWest The handful of neckbeards and incels upset over Ellie being gay and Abby existing are hardly a majority of the people that didn't like the game. I'm pretty sure most of the people that didn't like it didn't enjoy it because of the legitimate faults of the game
As an Australian I feel like I need to ask this for clarification: does “this holiday” mean Christmas, i.e. December 2022, or something else? Queen’s Birthday? Halloween??… 🤪
TLoU doesn't need or really even deserve a remake just yet. It hasn't even hit 10 years old and the returns have seriously diminished from gen to gen. Just seems pointless.
@Lem1697 coming from some one that loves jax and daxter , naughty dog will never make another jax and daxter game , unless some one else makes it.
@Lem1697 Other then being overlong with a weak 3rd act all the faults of the game are there in the first game. Abby and Ellie being gay are the issues most of the "haters" have, even now they still cry and get salty over the game. Fact is though the game sold really well and won a ton of awards what includes many fan voted awards, the "haters" are a small minority.
I think they plan to add gameplay elements from TLOU2 like crawling through grass, rope swinging / rope puzzles, maybe add some human enemies versus infected encounters, maybe even include one or two new enemy types and expand certain areas like Bill's Town & The City so that there are multiple branching paths and more places to explore, much like in TLOU2.
And I'm okay with all these things, my only concern is them altering the story too much, but I'm looking at TLOU Remake much the same way Insomniac Games looks at Ratchet & Clank 2016, while Ratchet & Clank 2016 was a retelling of Ratchet & Clank 1, it didn't undermine or replace the original Ratchet & Clank back on the PS2, it was simply another take on the original that can exist on it's own.
And people claiming "They wasting resources that could be better spent on something else", I mean they're currently developing 4 titles at the moment, and from my understanding TLOU Remake is being handled by a small team within Naughty Dog in collaboration with XDev who is also working with multiple other studios on multiple other projects.
The fact that Naughty Dog is working on 4 projects at once is pretty impressive, clearly taking some notes from Insomniac Games, would love to see Sucker Punch, Guerrilla Games, Santa Monica Studios & Bluepoint Games grow to the point that they too can work on four project at once.
This game with new puzzles and tlou2 mechanics and I’m sold. This game is so so much better narrative and character wise than 2
@XanderTigerclaw Holiday season is November and December. Game companies like to release games during this time period because more people are buying stuff as a result of presents for that time of year and there's also usually massive sales surrounding Black Friday (this year that day is November 25th).
I don't get why any game from the PS4 generation would need a remake. It makes zero sense to me, they already look great. I've yet to see any game that looks like it couldn't be played on PS4 from the PS5, the difference is unnoticeable to me and probably a lot of people that don't sit at the TV with a ruler counting pixels.
60FPS is a different story and that could be achieved with a patch. It's just like people who are asking for a Bloodboynremake, why? It won't look much different to justify it.
If they're going to do remakes then PS3 and prior would be justifiable. Otherwise it's a waste of time and resources that could be better spent on new games in my opinion. And it's not like PlayStation has money to waste on this sort of thing.
Already bought this game two times, that should be enough for me to get this free of charge.
I love the Last of Us series but I'm not sure about this. Perhaps if pick it up when on sale or if added to the new Plus, even if it's just to see the pretty graphics and experience the gameplay changes. It's not a needed remake but by all accounts, ND have still been able to work on other projects so it's not as if the remake has prevented them from doing anything else.
Buy it or don't. It's up to you.
Like many others I feel this is an unnecessary remaster and yet at the same time I suspect most of us will actually play it.
Be interesting to see the comparison between the remake of the remake on the PS5 compared to the remake on the 4K Pro patch.
Seems like a complete waste of time - just patch the PS4 version with extra spangly bits so PS5 magpies can have something that looks 'next gen'.
Surely Naughty Dog have got better things to do than this? Otherwise the PS5 generation is looking to be a total waste.
@GADG3Tx87 last of us remastered already runs at 1800p 60fps on a pr4 pro let alone a ps5
I'm good.. I played this when it originally came out and the remaster for PS4. Moving on...
I don't get it...why remake 1 instead of giving us part 3???
@WallyWest Look up nakeyjackey's video on TLOU2. Hopefully that get's you to stop calling the people that didn't like the game "haters"
@Tchunga How many times is GTA and Skyrim rereleased already at full price. Ill take the the remake from a 7 year old game that was a remaster from a older game without any issues.
@Flaming_Kaiser Well I'm certain Sony would be more than happy to take your money. Afterall that's the only reason decisions like "remaking The Last of Us" ever get made
@Snake_V5 FIFA 21 remake
@Tchunga Funny talking about that with a Pokemon avatar if i like to play a game that i like why would you have a issue with that.
And why do you think Nintendo makes games to make you happy? Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Steam any company is there for one reason to make money of you.
Atleast its no Nintendo that takes no effort at all and ask full price and rereleases everything several times. Putting away digital games in a fault to make maximum advantage of FOMO. 🤪
@Flaming_Kaiser You're seriously going after my profile avatar? Talk about grasping at straws. The reason I have a Pokemon as my avatar is because this particular Pokemon, Incineroar, is my main in Smash Brothers. It has literally nothing to do with the actual Pokemon games.
But please continue to mouth off about Pokemon and Nintendo. I'm 110% platform agnostic, it doesn't effect me in the slightest
@Tchunga Ok if you say so congrats i still stand by my response if you want to look at nickel and dime with no effort look at Nintendo.
Take Mario 64 its even a great example. Creating a shortage on a digital game plus Mario64 a great example of minum effort.
Zelda how many times can you remaster a old game. Atleast they put effort in the Last of Us and you are not the only guy in the world there are probably a lot of people who never played it. Plus it works great with the new series.
Thats my take on it and thats it.
@Flaming_Kaiser And I'd say I agree with you and that's an excellent take to have but unfortunatley your profile picture IS an anime dragon. You see, Anime dragons invalidate any opinions regarding The Last of Us or Nintendo remasters 😕 Sorry. And It was a really good take up until then too
Never rated this game. Maybe it's because I don't like zombie games
@Tchunga Its from one of my favorite games Breath of Fire 4 on PS1 i even based online profile. I had great memories on the game and i loved every second of playing it and i dont feel any shame about it.
