Update (27/6/22): Evidence is mounting for a Skull & Bones release date. In addition to the below, it's now been discovered that ESRB, the games rating board for North America, has rated the beleaguered Ubisoft title, as reported by Eurogamer.
This new listing also doesn't mention PS4 — it's possible the game has jumped ship and will now only release on current-gen hardware, but we don't know for certain just yet. If you were wondering, the game has a Mature rating — probably expected. You can read up a little more about the rating through here, and it lines up with that leaked footage from earlier this year.
Original Story: One day, we'll be able to talk about Skull & Bones after release, and won't that be a novel thing? Announced roughly five years ago, the open water pirate game has been through the stormiest of seas on the route to launch, but it looks like the end may finally be in sight.
As spotted on Reddit, a newly approved age rating for the game has cropped up in Brazil. It lists the game for current-gen platforms including PS5, with no mention of PS4. We're unclear if Skull & Bones is releasing on both, but we assume that'll be the case. Hopefully more info is coming soon.
It's not the first rating for the title, either. Last month, the PC version of the game was rated in South Korea. Normally, age ratings such as these appear towards the tail end of a project's development, so it does seem like Ubisoft may finally be getting ready to ship the game (pun of course intended).
The last official word on the game came from an earnings report, in which Ubisoft states Skull & Bones will release within financial year 2022 (meaning between 1st April 2022 and 31st March 2023), so this all seems to be lining up.

I was always looking forward to this but if it has a 'season pass' I'll be sailing on by
I'll believe it when I see it. Also, does anyone else always read the game's name as Skull and Crossbones? I guess it's like how I always read Balan Wonderworld as Wonderland.
Im still interested. If they can capture the magic of 'Black Flag', im all in! Loved that game....
Another live service game for Ubisoft to abandon within a year.
@jFug I'm not a ubi fan but the last thing they do is abandon there games after a year.Theyve got a track record of multi year support for most of there games, even the ones which aren't that popular
Updated!
Definitely looking forward to it. Fingers crossed it turn out well.
So, this like a multiverse version of AC Black Flag, without the AC license?
I like the concept but I'm afraid I will be disappointed that it's not AC and/or multiplayer focussed.
I would rather walk the plank than invest in live services
Zero interest in a "collect loot" online multiplayer game, but the mechanics and graphics and weightiness of the boats giving a more immersive feel would be a great addition to another Ubisoft game with a storyline. Do I want a Black Flag remake? Not really, but I'd play a new AC with these updated ship mechanics and naval warfare added on. Or a new open world Pirate IP with a proper storyline, interesting characters, and with land settlements, not just all out ocean all the time.
I guess what made Black Flag really cool was the naval warfare and travel being a big part of the game that fit in really well, but when you'd had enough exploring the seas in the open world, you could still go and play Assassin's Creed on land.
I can't see how people won't just get bored of this pretty quickly, even if the naval warfare is done really well, it's still pretty repetitive to sail around and sink ships on the open ocean.
Ships can't run, ships can't hide, ships can't climb, ships can't have conversations, and ships can't have questionable morals 😁
Honestly not expecting much from this at all, so perhaps we'll be pleasantly surprised.
This doesn’t seem real! Looking forward to seeing what it turned into!
PS5 only release is great to hear if true! I still have my doubts about this game though.
